Jim Hoft’s Inadvertent Comedy of the Day: Obama Flips Chuck Todd the Bird!

Several screws loose
Wingnuts • Views: 30,916
DERP

The moron who won the “Accuracy in Media” award at CPAC has uncorked another imaginary outrage tonight; I’ll just let Dim Jim tell the story in his inimitably dense way:

Nice. Obama Flips Off NBC Reporter in Israel (Video) | the Gateway Pundit

New tone.

Don’t look now but it looks like Barack Obama just flipped off an NBC reporter for asking a tough question. NBC’s Chuck Todd went rogue today and asked Obama why he was so unpopular in Israel. Obama went rogue and flipped him a bird.

President Thin-Skin doesn’t like the tough questions.

Words are inadequate to plumb the depths of Hoft’s sniveling stupidity, but here’s the video he posted at YouTube to back up his post. Feel the outrage, if you will.

UPDATE at 3/20/13 8:45:42 pm

The famous 2 finger bird.

He’s so cunning, but he couldn’t slip it past the rapier wit of Dim Jim.

True. A guy like that is going to find things to bitch about regardless. My favorite by him is when he flipped his shit over the Obama twitter account posting a photo of fireworks on a past 4th of July wishing the people of the US a Happy New Year. Because you know that’s such a scandal. Or his awesome bit last week when he accused Bo the White House Dog of having his own personal motorcade.

If a Republican wins, Hoft will cheer for a month or two and then start lamenting the new president’s “betrayal”. This will be because Dim jim can’t stand being part of the majority, because it means you actually have to get stuff done.

I’m so tired of these idiots and their “NEW TONE” bullshit. As if any of them ever had the slightest intention to engage in a new form of discourse. People are shit to each other, period. There was never going to be any kind of “new tone” from anybody, so stop making a big deal when you think someone’s broken the rules.

Did Chuck Todd’s “Israelis hate Obama” question have any basis in fact?

Also, in a fit of masochism, I went over to Gateway Pundit. How these people manage not to poke their eyes out while brushing their teeth is beyond comprehension.

One person posts that Chuck Todd deserves the alleged flipping for asking an asshat question. A person replying states that Respondent #1 is missing the point, as that it’s very unpresidential to flip anyone off.

Of course, there the tiny matter that ALL OBAMA WAS DOING WAS SCRATCHING A GODDAMN ITCH ON HIS FACE.

Of course, most of the “intelligentsia” at Gateway Pundit are probably okay with a Governor flipping the middle finger.

Prepare for a rant later about how Obama actually gave him “the forks”. In the UK and Australia, you can make an insulting gesture using your index and middle finger like the bird and it means the exact same thing. But it’s kind of obscure for Americans. Also, clearly not what Obama did. But I’m waiting for someone over there to say, “Well, maybe it wasn’t the bird but it was definitely the forks. Totally!”

These are the same people who insist that liberals are anti-Semitic.

One of the bigger take aways from all of this is how conservatives are moving the goalposts regarding Israel and Obama.

First it was Obama hates Israel because he never visited as President (just like noted liberal and anti-Semite Ronald Reagan.) Now that he’s there, it’s all “Israelis actually hate him” and “Bibi thinks he’s a dolt” and so on.

Or now that Bibi has praised him, some of them like Bolton are saying “Oh, that’s just propaganda.” Really, if there was any indication that Bibi despised Obama like they want to claim, he would have shunned him on this visit. Their relationship probably isn’t the best but you’re not always going to get along with your counterparts. The wingnuts love to make a great deal of how Reagan and Thatcher got along but there’s a lot out that suggests it wasn’t as totally chummy as it was made out to be. Besides, the wingnuts were fine with Bush actually alienating “Old Europe” in the lead up to Iraq.

The Gettysburg Address via Bengali and Latin. I rather like this version.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now, with a civil war, and the people involved should try, or should no longer be considered a dedicated support. We are met by the war in the great plain of it. This page was last part of a piece of land in the bed they gave us, which are here made it holy, in order that the people may live. Altogether fitting and proper that we should do.
Deeper Now - we can make St. - You can not might not be in the Holy Land. Brave dead, who is here to fight, so that our poor power to add or detract from, not to have been and dedicate. Famous for not enough, nor long remember what we say here, but they are what can I forget. But we who are alive, who are here to the unfinished work which they consecrated thing has been done, has been hitherto so nobly protulerunt.gens the freedom of the people and the multitude of government of the people, there was nothing new, it does not Let the day perish in the land.

My favorite: “This page was last part of a piece of land in the bed they gave us.” Bad Lip Reading was here.

And so to bed.

Discovery Docu-Special Uncovers the Secrets of the KKK

Wednesday night, Discovery Channel will air a one-hour special, “KKK: Beneath the Hood,” that delves into the truths and secrets behind one of the largest surviving white-supremacist organizations, the Ku Klux Klan. This exclusive clip from the docu-special reveals that the organization, which was formed on Christmas Eve of 1865 (the same year the American Civil War ended), began in an unexpected way: as a sophomoric gag. In his first televised interview, Richard Bondira, a Traditionalist American Knights member, talks about the Klan’s surprising origins.

According to Bondira, the group began “innocently enough in a law office in Pulaski, Tennessee.” Six Confederate Civil War veterans were deciding how to occupy their time now that the war was over, Bondira continued, and they agreed that forming a mysterious organization similar to college fraternities — in which they could engage in pranks and hazing — would be fun.

It was during this time that the name Ku Klux Klan was conceived. At first, the name was not intended to be menacing, Bondira said; “Ku Klux” was a variation of the Greek word “kýklos,” which means wheel or band.

It wasn’t long, though, before the organization turned violent and terroristic. In 1869, the first era of the Klan disbanded under pressure from the federal government, but factions of the KKK continue to exist to this day. Discovery was able to gain access via acclaimed photojournalist Anthony Karen, who has long documented the secret world of the Klan (as well as White Nationalists, the Westboro Baptist Church, the Maricopa County Jail, and more).

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Hamas and the Islamic extremists in Gaza shot themselves in the foot with the latest barrage of kassams against Israel. Doing it all while President Obama was meeting with Israeli and Palestinian leaders no less.

Making friends and influencing people, Hamas is. Influencing them in the wrong way, and allowing Obama to draw a different set of conclusions from the ones that Hamas would seek (which is to force Israel to eliminate the border fence, rigid controls on Palestinian movement to-from Gaza, etc., in furtherance of Hamas’ ultimate goal of seeking a one-state solution).

The attacks highlight Israel’s need to maintain security protocols relating to Gaza, but Israel could use this as an opportunity to further reduce security controls in the West Bank - a carrot/stick approach.

At the same time, the situation in Syria remains on everyone’s mind in Israel, as rebel forces take control of areas near the DMZ in the Golan and reports continue to sputter on about the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

I’m skeptical of the reports, and while US officials think that simulants may have been used, the Israelis seem more certain that chemical weapons were used. It doesn’t mean that the Israelis are going to take action, but it does indicate that there’s a range of opinions on whether Assad used them or not. The intel sources and reports I’ve read indicate that it wasn’t likely to be the rebels that used them, but it could have been Assad loyalists. They also indicate that it could more likely have been chemicals released when a scud missile landed and propellant/gases from the missile itself sickened people or that someone detonated munitions that released chemicals stored in a pharmaceutical or chemical production facility (like those for pesticides). Some pesticides are closely related to chemical weapons - their origin was in the creation of making more effective pesticides), so if a bomb or missile hit a pesticide storage area, it could have released vapors into the air that mimicked the effects of a chemical weapon.

As desperate as Assad is to remain in power, I don’t think Assad’s that crazy to use chemical weapons at this stage of the civil war. He hasn’t used them to date, and I don’t think his forces would want to suddenly become targets of NATO/US/Israeli airstrikes (depending on circumstances of the use and whether Israelis were affected downwind for example). That would surely hasten his regime’s collapse.

A Kurdish Spring on Many Fronts

LONDON — Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed leader of the rebel Kurdish Workers Party, the P.K.K., called for a ceasefire Thursday in the three-decades-long war between Kurdish rebels and the Turkish state, giving a whole new impetus to New Year celebrations by Kurds…

…The past decade, with the war in Iraq, the Arab Spring, and Syria’s descent into civil war, has seen a dramatic change in their fortunes.

Ten years ago this week, Kurds were fleeing to the mountains from the cities of northern Iraq in anticipation of attack by the forces of Saddam Hussein in the wake of a U.S.-led invasion.

Kurdish forces held the line in the north on behalf of the international coalition after Turkey refused to join the invasion.

A decade on, an autonomous Kurdistan is now the most secure and prosperous region of Iraq and enjoys close relations with a formerly hostile Turkey…

Also, clearly not what Obama did. But I’m waiting for someone over there to say, “Well, maybe it wasn’t the bird but it was definitely the forks. Totally!”

CVS to employees: Hand over your health info or pay more for insurance

CVS is launching a “voluntary” new program for employees that allows them to avoid paying more for health insurance, if they just share personal medical information — weight, body fat, glucose levels, etc. — with the company.

ABC News reports that CVS staffer have until May 1, 2014, to make an appointment with a doctor in order to gather the required information.
“Our benefits program is evolving to help our colleagues take more responsibility for improving their health and managing health-associated costs,”
explains a CVS rep to the Boston Herald. “All personal health data is kept private by our wellness program’s third party administrator and is never shared with CVS Caremark.”

We just hope these files don’t end up on a city sidewalk like the bunch of old prescriptions a Manhattan CVS left outside for anyone to pick through.
The CVS program is just the latest among companies trying the carrot/stick approach to keeping healthcare costs down.

However, many of the larger companies that have started such programs offer discounts or refunds for employees who take part in certain wellness programs, rather than penalize employees who feel it may be invasive for their employer to request such personal information.

“The approach they’re taking is based on the assumption that somehow these people need a whip, they need to be penalized in order to make themselves healthy,” Patient Privacy Rights founder Dr. Deborah Peel tells ABC News. “It’s technology-enhanced discrimination on steroids.”

A company I used to work for did something similar to this. The first year, all you needed to do to get health insurance discounts was get a health assessment done. It focused on key numbers (BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.). If they were within a certain range you could get the discounts.

The second year, if you still wanted the discounts, you had to not only work with a company provided health coach to set and reach health goals, you ALSO had to show you were making progress on those goals within six months. No progress = No discounts for next year.

I have a real problem with this approach because it also penalizes healthy people. I myself am 30 and in good health, there is little I could gain and few (if any) health goals I would need to reach if working with a coach. I already take good care of myself. Even though my numbers are good enough to qualify for a discount, I’d probably still be denied because of that “progress” requirement.

These companies say they are taking this approach to improve the health of workers, I think they are doing it as a stealth way to raise premiums. They know a lot of employees aren’t going to want to jump through all these hoops and will just pay the higher premiums.

Or farm worker who has to pick x bushels of crop by hand per hour/day or else lose their job. /

In a related subject, if the US amends its immigration policy and brings about a path to citizenship, it could result in a upswing in revenues captured by various taxes. It would mean that the solvency of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid would be improved since more people are paying into the system and the same goes for health care - they would be paying into the system (through their employers) and reliance on emergency rooms for indigent care would be reduced.

That also doesn’t take into account the fact that if a path to citizenship (or more broadly a legal immigrant status), there could be fees imposed for bringing someone’s status into legal conformity.

I think this is exactly the kind of area where you need government to step in and regulate the extent to which this kind of approach is acceptable. Clearly it’s not a bad idea to incentivize people to behave in healthy ways *to some extent*.

The problems begin when you allow companies to take it too far. At the end of the day, it turns into the same kind of system that finds creative ways to deny high-cost treatment to serious conditions.

Not to mention, several states (Alabama and Georgia to name a couple) have TRIED to give those jobs “back to Americans” and (big shock!) it turns out they DON’T WANT THEM! Whoulda thunk it?

Not just that, the states that have tried to make up the difference with convict labor found that the convicts would work a day or less in the fields, then refuse to do any more work.

Bingo. The health assessment approach is fine. That way your numbers determine if you get a discount or not. There’s only a single session needed to make a determination.

But this health coach nonsense is really taking it too far.

Which is a great proposal…until you remember that the folks bitching the most about “illegals” are generally also the ones who think we need to do away with SS and Medicare/Medicaid because “the free market will do it better.”

Michelle Malkin Savages Obama’s ‘Photo Op’ Middle East Trip: ‘He Shouldn’t Have Gone In The First Place’

On Thursday, Michelle Malkin appeared on Fox & Friends where she pummeled President Barack Obama’s approach to America’s relationship with Israel and the peace process between the Jewish state and Palestine. She said that Obama’s entire trip to the Middle East was political and merely a “photo op.” When asked what the president could have done to make her think the trip was a success, Malkin said “he shouldn’t have gone in the first place.”

Now, she’s bitching that the President shouldnt’ have gone? Why?

Because Obama has shot down the preposterous notion that the relationship between the US and Israel was bad or that Obama and Bibi could actually get along nicely. That’s why.

Obama’s Israel policy has been a continuation of longstanding US policy towards Israel. It hasn’t changed. He’s not forcing the sides into talks and he’s not demanding conferences or summits. Obama recognizes that there are those in the PA that don’t want peace with Israel - Hamas for one. Today’s rocket attacks reinforce that.

It’s why yesterday’s friendly banter and speech was taken as a surprise by right wing observers - they bought into the notion that Obama wasn’t an Israel supporter, when he’s been just that all along.

There’s probably stats somewhere on what the long-term health issues are for produce pickers. My bet is that back and joint arthritis is right up there.

…I think about five Israelis who boarded a bus in Bulgaria, who were blown up because of where they came from; who were robbed of the ability to live, and love, and raise families. That’s why every country that values justice should call Hizbollah what it truly is – a terrorist organization. Because the world cannot tolerate an organization that murders innocent civilians, stockpiles rockets to shoot at cities, and supports the massacre of men, women and children in Syria.

The fact that Hizbollah’s ally – the Assad regime – has stockpiles of chemical weapons only heightens the urgency. We will continue to cooperate closely to guard against that danger. And I have made it clear to Bashar al-Assad and all who follow his orders: we will not tolerate the use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people or the transfer of these weapons to terrorists. The world is watching, and we will hold you accountable.

America will also insist that the Syrian people have the right to be freed from the grip of a dictator who would rather kill his own people than relinquish power. Assad must go so that Syria’s future can begin. Because true stability in Syria depends upon establishing a government that is responsive to its people – one that protects all communities within its borders, while making peace with countries beyond them…

Pediatrics Group Backs Gay Marriage, Saying It Helps Children (NYT)
The American Academy of Pediatrics declared its support for same-sex marriage for the first time on Thursday, saying that allowing gay and lesbian parents to marry if they so choose is in the best interests of their children.

The academy’s new policy statement says same-sex marriage helps guarantee rights, benefits and long-term security for children, while acknowledging that it does not now ensure access to federal benefits. When marriage is not an option, the academy said, children should not be deprived of foster care or adoption by single parents or couples, whatever their sexual orientation.

Most of the climate and terrain in China does not lend to cultivation of wheat, but works fine for rice. So, Chinese (and nearby countries) get their daily starch from rice. Further north, wheat and breadstuffs are more common. Bread in the western sense is a relatively new foodstuff outside the big international cities like Beijing and Shanghai.

Pollard broke US law. Sold US secrets to Israel. Prosecuted, convicted. EOS. Deserved life sentence. Doesn’t matter that he was spying for a US ally - because it was still spying and a violation of US law.

(also, NYC pastrami or corned beef or pizza crust. Fortnum & Mason even makes a special New York blend tea, formulated with our water supply’s trace minerals taken into account).

What these buffoons don’t get is that liberals are, relatively speaking, pushing for the US to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels for a variety of reasons, one of which is precisely that many oil-producing countries have shitty regimes that we support to keep the crude flowing.

So, in fact, the same people who shun Chik-fil-A due to the gay rights thing ARE ALSO attempting to persuade our elected officials to be tougher on places like Saudi Arabia.

Hell, any who’d ask me if I’ll stop buying gas because it comes from anti-gay countries like Saudi Arabia would get asked in response if they’re filling up their “manly” pick-up truck with gas coming from terror-supporting nations like…Saudi Arabia.

I initially read this as “Dollar for dollar is the pain…”

Which it more or less is. I’m just wondering how this dollar for dollar math = more jobs? /

Ooo!

If there’s one regret I have, it’s now that J.J. Abrams is going to be helming “Star Wars,” it’ll most likely mean he’ll be handing off the reins to someone else for “Star Trek 3.”

But as long as it’s not “Star Trek 3 directed by Michael Bay,” I suppose I could learn to live with it.

If they handed off the franchise to Michael Bay, you’d be able to see the angry mob descending on Hollywood from space.

Also, there are many other places to get chicken than Chik-Fil-A. Whereas if you want to fuel a motor vehicle you are limited in fuel choices.

This is very true. And many (most?) people don’t really have much flexibility in reducing their consumption, due to having to drive to work, for example.

Having said that I do think that the crappiness of many oil-producing regimes is a very good reason to make efforts to reduce our oil consumption (on top of the pollution aspect as well, of course).

Despite massive losses in revenues and an inability to figure out how to stem those losses, Congress is about to force the USPS to keep its Saturday scheduled service. Dropping the weekend service would help the postal service cut costs and help restructure the business, but Congress doesn’t want to lose that service - but they’re not going to help either.

The Postal Service, which lost $16 billion last year, had announced last month its plan to switch to five-day mail service to save $2 billion annually.

No law requires the Postal Service to deliver mail six days a week, but Congress has traditionally included a provision in legislation to fund the federal government each year that has prevented the Postal Service from reducing delivery service.

The House of Representatives on Thursday gave final approval to the legislation, known as a continuing resolution, that maintains the provision, sending it to President Barack Obama to sign into law. The Senate approved the measure on Wednesday.

“Once the delivery schedule language in the Continuing Resolution becomes law, we will discuss it with our Board of Governors to determine our next steps,” said David Partenheimer, a spokesman for the Postal Service.

Several polls have shown a majority of the public supports ending six-day delivery of first-class mail.

The Postal Service has said that while it would not pick up or deliver first-class mail, magazines and direct mail, it would continue to deliver packages and pharmaceutical drugs.

The plan for a new delivery schedule, Partenheimer said, would respond to the customers’ changing needs and would help keep the Postal Service from becoming a burden to taxpayers.

The Postal Service, an independent agency not funded by taxpayers, has said it could need a taxpayer bailout of more than $47 billion by 2017 if Congress does not give it flexibility to change its operations.

Email and e-payments have made hash of the first class postage business over the past couple of years, and the recession has reduced business on the other classes of postage as well.

The GOP screamed bloody murder when the suggestion was made to put limits on the pay for bank executives, with accusations that it and other measures meant to force banks that had sought federal bailouts into accepting their obligation to taxpayers amounted to “nationalization.”

Yet here you have Congress essentially telling the USPS it will not only take on a massive obligation (pre-funding 75 years of pension payments) that it cannot afford, but it will continue to operate in a manner that is losing it the very money it needs to address that obligation.

Color me shocked.////

From the Hoskin’s page:

Hoskins was not initially aware that Super Mario Bros. was based on the popular video game of the same name. His son had asked him what film he was working on, and recognising it, showed Hoskins the video game on the Nintendo video game console. In a 2007 interview, he revealed that despite getting praised for his performance on the film, he was extremely unhappy with the film and was greatly angered by his experiences making it, referring to it as the “worst thing I ever did”.

and

He was slated to be a last-minute replacement in the film The Untouchables if star Robert De Niro had not decided to play Al Capone. When De Niro took the part, director Brian De Palma mailed Hoskins a cheque for £20,000 with a “Thank You” note, which prompted Hoskins to call up De Palma and ask him if there were any more movies he didn’t want him to be in.

SURELY this study has already been done, but I’d be curious to see how the revenue just from bulk-rate junk mail compares against the manpower, fuel, and other overhead consumed by that alone.

My bet is that it turns into a complex calculation real quick. The USPS needs capacity to handle a high-peak season (something like Christmas) and high-peak periods (end/beginning of month when bills and payments go flying back and forth.) And said system has to work broadly and timely in being able to move large quantities of mail hither and non. And a half-full mail semi costs roughly as much as a full one, so some economics of scale kick in as well. So even the reduced revenue (or operation at a minor loss) might be considered acceptable since the capacity and system need to be maintained. And underneath there are probably some hoops involved in getting rate increases approved - it’s not like they just raise/lower rates on a monthly basis based on some condition.*

On the mailers’ side they have already done the calculation that sending out thousands of junk mails and circulars generate enough “hits” to make it profitable to due at the bulk mail rates.

* - A lot of contract rail and truck freight rates carry riders on them adding on a fuel surcharge that is based on the trending price of diesel fuel. So, for example, if the average price of diesel in the US is over a certain threshold all the freight rates are increased by 7%.
