Classic Video: Peter Gabriel - Mercy Street

Swear they moved that sign
Music • Views: 39,324

One of the most beautiful songs ever written. If it catches you in the right mood you may find a tear in your eye. Posted by Peter Gabriel at YouTube; I don’t think I’ve ever seen the official video before.

The official Mercy Street video.

MERCY STREET for Anne Sexton

Looking down on empty streets all she can see
Are the dreams all made solid
Are the dreams made real

All of the buildings, all of the cars
Were once just a dream
In somebody’s head

She pictures the broken glass, pictures the steam
She pictures a soul
With no leak at the seam

Let’s take the boat out
Wait until darkness
Let’s take the boat out
Wait until darkness comes

Nowhere in the corridors of pale green and grey
Nowhere in the suburbs
In the cold light of day
There in the midst of it, so alive and alone
Words support like bone

Dreaming of mercy street
Wear your inside out
Dreaming of mercy
In your daddy’s arms again
Dreaming of mercy street
‘Swear they moved that sign
Dreaming of mercy
In your daddy’s arms

Pulling out the papers from drawers that slide smooth
Tugging at the darkness
Word upon word
Confessing all the secret things in the warm velvet box
To the priest - he’s the doctor
He can handle the shocks
Dreaming of the tenderness - the tremble in the hips
Of kissing Mary’s lips

Dreaming of mercy street
Wear your inside out
Dreaming of mercy
In your daddy’s arms again
Dreaming of mercy street
‘Swear they moved that sign
Looking for mercy
In your daddy’s arms again

Mercy, mercy, looking for mercy
Mercy, mercy, looking for mercy

Anne, with her father is out in the boat
Riding the water
Riding the waves
On the sea

It’s just wonderful to witness true talent at work. It’s also notable just how much music was improved by Peter Gabriel’s decision to leave Genesis and go solo. It was controversial at the time, but it ultimately allowed both him and Phil Collins to improve themselves and truly perform to the best of their abilities.

More of a David Byrne fan:

I’m a big fan of Peter, but my favorite songs are either Biko or The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging and the Cinema Show (w/Genesis).

Why choose? David Byrne has always been awesome. Talking Heads were one of my favorite bands growing up. This is pretty cool too:

I’m also a big fan of both Gabriel, Byrne, Genesis and Talking Heads. Well represented on my iTunes list.

Been an interesting day. Woke up to having a big yellow construction crane right outside my window.

Said crane, (one of the road mobile ones), was brought in to erect another crane on the construction site across the street. With a smaller road mobile crane brought in as well for unloading the trailers containing the various crane parts.

OK - this is a freaking awesome jQuery plugin:

masonry.desandro.com

Makes it very simple to do a dynamic grid-based layout. I just started experimenting with it on our Playlist page:

littlegreenfootballs.com

16 Charles Johnson  Sat, Mar 23, 2013 4:16:28pm

On that Playlist page, check out how the columns reflow if you resize the window.

re: #15 Charles Johnson

But for the copyright issues, that should be jQuery Tetris. Pretty neat how it can help get to the most efficient layout.

That album “So” was a true milestone. Every song on it is perfect. That was actually the very first CD that I ever bought - consumer CDs were a new thing when it was released.

What was interesting was to see some of the “arts” free newspaper reviews of that album. It was like Gabriel stabbed them in the back by making an album (and videos) that achieved popular success.

Breaking News!

23 Achilles Tang  Sat, Mar 23, 2013 4:41:34pm

Twice now I have been involved in what, from my perspective, was a misunderstood issue/attitude/intent, whatever, in Pages threads.

Both times, the thread originators decided to close the threads rather than continue any debate, which I think is a sad attitude in a forum that exists for exchange.

The following is what was to be my most recent post in that thread, but when I hit post I found that the page was closed. “No more debate allowed”.

Where would LGF be if that was Charles’s attitude?

Listen up people. If you, ditto heads included, want to stop this fest for the stalkers, I will be happy to, but if you want to address me I will do my best to reply (I tried to reply to Gus in his recent, mildly related, page when in a hissy fit he withdrew it, then reinstate it except the reinstated page didn’t accept comments).

Some 8 years ago when I first came here, I helped (I think) to keep this place from turning into a Christian versus Muslim blog. Many of those who were here then are now the lost people populating stalker blogs and others cesspits that we hear of regularly. I’ve learned a lot, here, since then and appreciate it.

My present feeling is that the pendulum is swinging a little too far to the other side, at least with some, and the khumbaya beat is drowning out the rational discourse.

So get a spine and debate issues with words, and don’t make up so much imaginary carp.

How’s that grab you?

re: #34 wrenchwench

Since I’ve seen hints of similar complaints from others (don’t feel like naming names right now), I’ll add my .02. The complaint seems to be:

“No fair! Other religions get criticized but we can’t say anything bad about Islam.”

It kind of ties in with what I said earlier about unions - that is, when a history of bad-faith, bad-agenda complaints about something exists, it can indeed make it more difficult for legitimate issues to be raised. However, that doesn’t mean one can’t raise those issues at all - just that it has to be done with more diligence and tact.

And the source makes a difference as well. Some might say, “Why should the source matter? The issue is the same regardless.” Technically yes, but think of it like this - if you have an article about rape in Africa posted by a women’s rights group, your reaction will be vastly different than it would had that very same article been promoted by a group like Stormfront.

So it goes here with issues relating to Islam - the context in which they’re raised, and who does the raising and when, makes a difference as to how the rest of the LGF community reacts.

I used to be a total basketball geek. But since I can’t play anymore it’s kind of faded. These two weekends used to be my favorite time of year because I used to work until midnight in the 80s, and I didn’t have cable, so on Thursday night and Friday night I would get home and the last games in the west would just be starting. The teams with th esenior leadership would have such an advantage, but anymore the seniors are the guys who aren’t good enough to go pro!

68 SteveMcGazi  Sat, Mar 23, 2013 6:04:49pm

In a couple of years LaSalle will be my alma mater, 31 years after I took my first freshman courses. I just got a huge scholarship to finish my last two years. Otherwise, it wouldn’t happen.

Priebus once again demonstrating that the GOP’s not really interested in changing its message, just the tone of the presentation. Huck’s great if you want to sound friendly and congenial as you’re telling gay Americans that they’re sinful, they’re engaging in a unhealthy lifestyle, and that allowing them to marry will lead to legalizing polygamy.

Picked the first loquats of the season. Well, only two, as they were the only ones ripe enough. And yes, they were good, somewhat orangish flesh and flavor just barely in the “mellow” side of the spectrum.

This is over a month behind last year’s date of the first fruit, and this particular young tree seems to be ahead of the others in the neighborhood by at least a couple of weeks.

It’s been a strange year for some trees around here - the local oranges did not have a good year, though I’ve come across several which are in bloom again.

RNC chair: Mike Huckabee should be Republicans’ LGBT rights ambassador

Maybe they can get Rush to speak on women’s issues and Donald Trump to speak on the economy while they are at it.

You know how I keep saying people who vote Republican shouldn’t act all “I do believe I have the vapors” when their leaders keep doing stupid shit?

This is the party gestalt. Right here. “Let’s get a guy who thinks LGBT is a path to evil, and make him our liaison to that community, because he’s soft spoken.”

Personally, I don’t want to hear anymore bellyaching from so-called moderate Republicans about this shit.

Because this is what you support when you vote Republcian. You’re okay this behavior by endorsing the party as it stand now. Voting GOP is basically voting bigotry anymore.

Priebus once again demonstrating that the GOP’s not really interested in changing its message, just the tone of the presentation.

EXACTLY.

The GOP wants it both ways. They want to be able to enact policies that destroy the poor and middle class, hurt women and minorities, and openly discriminiate against gays, and they want to be able to lie with impunity about that by “moderating” their messaging.

Fuck that. Let them find demographic irrelevance. Maybe then they’ll figure out that appealing to the idiots and bigots is only making them a white, regional party.

The 3D printer folks are at it again, this time with a printed 30-round magazine for 7.62x39 chambered AKMs. Take a look, then tell me what you think:

The Feinstein AK Mag

My own thought is that the concept is actually quite ‘Soviet’ when you think about it: “reasonably high” durability, easy to use, and designed for cheap mass production. And I don’t approve of their choice of names, to be clear.

Al Qaeda likes this idea, I’m sure. Buy a parts kit, then print out the receiver and mag bodies and followers.

The sticking point for plastic and other polymer magazines remains their springs, which must still be made out of certain types of steel. Coil springs can be obtained easily, but most are not strong enough to lift 30 rounds of 7.62X39 into position.

You’re always going to need steel for the barrels, and the same engine lathe needed for that can easily be used to wind the springs. You can then stress relieve the springs in a home oven, you won’t even need to use the self cleaning mode.

Muslim activist confronts Pamela Geller over ‘absurd’ anti-Islam ads

Conservative activist Pamela Geller was called out on Saturday in a CNN interview by a Muslim activist for her latest round of anti-Islamic billboards, which feature, among others, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“The ads are absurd, they’re offensive,” said Linda Sarsour, a spokesperson for the National Network For Arab American Communities. “You’re quoting a man who is a Holocaust denier. He is not an American Muslim. Miss Geller has a history and track record of vilifying the American Muslim community and pitting communities up against each other.”

The billboards are based on Geller’s 2012 campaign in New York, funded through her group, the American Freedom Defense Initiative.

It’s random Saturday night thoughts and observations..
There has been pretty hot postings about Muslim and Christian persecutions and how they are presented in terms of fairness as if LGF suddenly turned into a Muslim blog and turned it’s eyes away from Christianity.
It has not nor ever will. As a fare people living in Liberty we can determine that such vicious attacks against a billion follower because of the devil living inside thousands of whack jobs. If folks had such horrible response to Catholics I would object also. ( hell water boarding back in the day was a tropic vacation.. Nothing like a good old torture that results in death ) So I think Christians should back off a bit and do something out of their vision. Healing…When was the last time you heard that word in all the anger? ( Either side )
We haven’t abandoned God…Nor given quarter to Muslims.. We give Quarter to all being attacked with such hate over the actions by a sect gone over the edge in the name of God. ( What a joke.. I’ll bet God hates that expression ). And for that I’m sorry..It just bothers me.

I’m still freaking stunned about my taxes..Can it be true? I guess rich people do live high off the hog. Good Gawd..
Last year I inherited money from my dad..Annuities, Insurance, Property, Lake house..All kinds of stuff..I was terrified about the death tax..( The law changed this year)
All Hail Accountants! I’m getting 1500 bucks back from the Feds…Refund!
You know I know this is complex stuff and I don’t get it..But how the heck does the fed owe me money? I’ll talk about it after I go to the office Monday and talk about it with my guy. I am not complaining but something isn’t right with our tax codes. Weird..I paid more taxes out of school at 21 making 3.35/hr.

Syrian gunfire hits military vehicles in Israeli Golan: army

Gunfire from Syria hit Israeli army vehicles travelling in the southern Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday, causing some damage but no casualties, the army said.

“A short while ago, military vehicles travelling in the Golan Heights were lightly damaged by bullets fired from Syria,” a spokeswoman told AFP. “No one was injured, and the incident is currently being reviewed.”

She could not say whether the shots were aimed at the Israeli army or stray bullets from fighting in Syria between rebels and army troops.

Hillary was not at the WWE’s DC summerslam thing. At least she wasn’t shown on the pay per view.

But Ed Gillispie was. And so were a couple of dozen recovering soldiers from Walter Reed.

The soldiers got a large standing ovation followed by a “USA USA” chant session.

The former head of the DNC got a smattering of boo’s and a very audible “who’s that?”

I actually felt kinda bad for the guy cos he had his kids with him.

Israeli innovations dazzle US president

US President Barack Obama was dazzled at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem on Thursday by a display of revolutionary technological innovations that promoted the idea that the world is a better and healthier place because of the existence of the Jewish state.

The exhibits – presented by companies, academic institutions and even three 16-year-old boys – included an “exoskeleton” that enables paraplegics to stand up and walk; a flexible robotic snake that can extricate people trapped in earthquakes and collapsed buildings; a helmet that can translate a person’s thoughts or facial expressions to actions; and a “waiter robot” to help the disabled that handed out pieces of matza to Obama, President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

Obama, who listened carefully to the presenters’ explanations and asked numerous questions, insisted on being photographed with those who developed – and those who already use – the innovations and repeatedly said, “I’m proud of you. Congratulations!” Peres made his own presentation, introducing Obama to young Israeli Arab and east Jerusalem engineers who benefited from a program he pioneered to find high-level engineering jobs at prestigious companies such as Intel. Peres said that he was inspired to initiate the project that found work for 600 Arab professionals after noting the high unemployment rates among minority college and university graduates, to which Obama responded, “Great idea!” The exoskeleton, called ReWalk and manufactured by ARGO Medical Technologies, was invented by Dr. Amit Goffer, an alumni of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. A quadriplegic who was inspired to invent the device because of his personal story and experience, Goffer appeared together with IDF veteran Radi Kaiuf and US Army veteran Sgt. Theresa Hannigan – paraplegics who can now stand and walk independently with the patented ReWalk. Hannigan served during the Vietnam era and was left paralyzed two years ago as a result of a progressive autoimmune disease.

I went back to college, after raising 6 kids, on a Pell Grant. This was back in the ‘80’s so I don’t know how easy the Pell Grants are to obtain. My oldest daughter, who just received her Master’s degree from Columbia, also received the Pell Grant. I have been told that the amounts they offer now are not as much as they were back in the 80’s but it’s worth checking out.

You do what the young’uns do. Apply to more than one school, get accepted and negotiate your financial aid with them to see which gives the best deal. The FA officers in most schools are more than willing to help you find aid, and it’s better than trying to do all the research yourself.

Adding one additional tidbit. Ask if you need to file the FAFSA to apply for aid as a non-traditional student. That’s the financial report parents and students have to fill out to apply for financial aid. It asks all kinds of nosy questions about home ownership, mortgage payments, vacation travel, second homes, etc. Generally, a pain in the ass. Glad I don’t need to deal with it anymore.

The Jihadist from Phoenix

….Eric Harroun, a white American from Phoenix, Arizona, who hails from a Christian family. He has become a self-described Sunni Muslim, fighting in Syria’s brutal civil war — even, he claimed, joining up with Jabhat al-Nusra, which the State Department has labeled an alias of al Qaeda in Iraq. He served nearly four years in the U.S. Army’s 586th Engineering Company, but was never deployed overseas.
….
Weeks of following Harroun’s digital trail on Facebook, MySpace, and chat forums culminated in contacting him through his Skype handle. We published an account of our initial conversations with him in a Fox News expose — a fact that prompted Harroun to denounce us as Zionist conspirators. At times, he was explicitly anti-Semitic: In a March 17 video chat, he referred to one of us multiple times as “that fucking kike.”

In our first conversation with Harroun, which began in Skype chat, he seemed paranoid about being tracked by U.S. and Israeli intelligence agencies. When on March 2, we asked him whether he had joined up with Jabhat al-Nusra, he answered, “5 Amendment” — referencing the stipulation in the Bill of Rights against self-incrimination. Providing “material support” to Jabhat al-Nusra would constitute a crime in the United States. He then sent a beer icon and asked, “What r u C.I.A or Mossad?”

No, no military service. I’ve never even taken the SAT or ACT tests. I was never encouraged to go to college and was living on my own at 17 so I was in survival mode. School kind of went away as a goal when I was trying to feed and clothe myself. I’m not even sure what I want to be when I grow up, I just feel like I need to be doing something that might help me become employable beyond minimum wage. I’ve been someone’s mom or wife for a REALLY long time, which is awesome, but it doesn’t really do much for financial stability.

Many schools accept scores from CLEP tests, which measure what you have learned outside school, in lieu of the SAT/ACT. clep.collegeboard.org

Do you have a community college in your town? That’s a good place to start. State universities are also pretty flexible about older students.

Okay. The reason I asked is that it might have been you to qualify for the same program that offered me a bit of life preserver.

But for whatever it’s worth, one of the best sources I’ve found is your particular state’s employment bureau. They usually have lists of available private, state and federal programs that specific demographic groups may qualify for.

While there are no guarantees, there are sometimes retraining programs for older workers, as well as programs designed to get women into the workforce.

I don’t recall if you’ve ever posted which state you live in, but as I’ve had some personal experience researching such programs, I’d be happy to take a few minutes and see if there’s anything I might be able to find if you’d care to “narrow it down.”

Good luck!

Watching the gun control discussion on This week with Stephanopoulis this morning.

Bottom line IMO-The gun show loophole closure/universal bg check needs to be a bill on it’s own to pass. Burden it with more measures and it may well fail. I am not a fan of big multi layer bills. If passing a series of bills is what it takes to regulate, so be it.

Oh and I got this from Gabby and her husband, perhaps the most responsible and calm voices of note in this

Dear Daniel -

Last night, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that he would advance universal background checks to a vote before the full U.S. Senate in early April.

Gabby and I met with Senator Reid before the State of the Union, and his decision is a win for all Americans who value their Second Amendment rights and believe background checks serve as the foundation for any effective gun policy.

News on this issue is breaking fast, and we want to make sure that you have the latest information as it happens. The best way to do that is to sign up for text message alerts from Americans for Responsible Solutions.

We have a lot of work to do, but Gabby and I know that if we stick together and make our voices heard, we’ll overcome a well-funded vocal minority attempting to block this critical piece of legislation.

Gee. There is a lot of construction in your area. What are they building?

This particular site is supposed to be a couple hundred units of apartments. Replacing a lot that held an old heavily rundown building from 1905 (torn down on 2009 or so.)

I’m not sure what the bigger constructions over on Chestnut or on Arch near City Hall are supposed to be for. Lots of structural steel up on both sites. In addition there are at least two older buildings in the area that have been gutted and are being redone as ground floor retail and luxury apartments in the upper floors.

And plans keep being mentioned about the big empty lot on Market and 20th; but haven’t seen anything actually get far along there.

Twice now I have been involved in what, from my perspective, was a misunderstood issue/attitude/intent, whatever, in Pages threads.

Both times, the thread originators decided to close the threads rather than continue any debate, which I think is a sad attitude in a forum that exists for exchange.

Where would LGF be if that was Charles’s attitude?

I have removed a Page when the “debate” just went so south and far from the topic it was basically no longer on topic at all. Once I asked Charles or a monitor to delete a comment from Page. I just have to conclude Charles pondered allowing Page authors to delete comments in a Page and decided against it. That “No more comment” think looks interesting for when a Page just sour.

Is that a new feature or just something CJ did as a one off?

I’m not a fan of removing pages. If keeping my material up meaning fighting a flame war with a troll, then I’m prepared to do that.

Don’t buy in to the rumors. So far, Twitter is about the only place that is indicating something has happened to Assad personally. There’s no media outlets even touching the story, and you know that one of them would love to be the one to officially break that story.

It’s quite possible that the rumors are meant to invite Assad loyalists to reconsider and join with the rebels and to indicate that Assad can’t or shouldn’t trust anyone. It’s propagandists in action.

Much more troublesome? Pervez Musharraf has returned to Pakistan for the first time in four years.

So, you know how the right wing was apoplectic over VP Biden’s recent European trip, where they went nuts on his $585k stay in Paris (for one night). While CNN headlines with the $585k for Biden’s one night stay in Paris, the story isn’t so much of a story.

For starters, it’s not exactly one room, or one night.

Official business took him last month to Europe, a trip that included a bill of $585,000 for his one-night stay in Paris.

Also on the receipt was $321,665 for a limousine company and $459,338.65 for a hotel stay in London.

And while Biden was only in each town for one night, the London hotel bill, for example, included 136 rooms for multiple nights for his advance team, according to the documents posted on the website for Federal Business Opportunities and unearthed by the conservative magazine, The Weekly Standard.

Whether or not the figures were posted online intentionally remain unclear, as similar reports for previous overseas trips could not be located on the same website.

Was this deluxe or just routine?

Several officials from previous administrations said this is just what it costs to run a full-scale, overseas trip for someone like the president or the vice president.

One former official from the George W. Bush administration thought the price tag was high, but conceded there are a lot of factors that drive up the cost, such as compensation for emptying rooms or displacing guests for security purposes.

The vice president’s office referred CNN to the State Department, which said the costs are “nothing out of the ordinary.”

“They are in line with high level travel across multiple administrations. The contract costs cover the entire range of support, including accommodations for military, communications, secret service staff, and other support professionals,” the department said in a statement.
In addition, the department said, security experts are also required to travel in advance of the president or vice president.

What this goes to is the right wing’s overarching claims that the Administration is spending profligately while cutting things like the WH tour during the sequester (which the right actually wants, with none of the blowback).

Yeah, was looking into that the other day. The London tab was for 136 room nights. The 500K tab for Biden in Paris was not for one room. But, there’s no point in trying to debunk this for the hillbillies. It’s the same type of BS that Alouette encounters when simple trying to debunk the fake quotes. They’re not normal people.

1954 conversion to synagogue, Beryl Price

This outstanding neo-Gothic church was originally the Covenant United Methodist Church. It was converted into a synagogue in 1954. The present congregation represents the merger of three Conservative synagogues. The oldest, Temple Beth Israel, was founded in 1840 by German and Polish immigrants. It merged in 1964 with the 18-year-old Temple Beth Zion to serve a revitalized Jewish community. In 1984, the Nezinger Synagogue, founded in 1889 by Eastern European Jews, merged into the congregation….

It almost certainly is. It’s doors and windows are in the Gothic style, and I’ll bet it has a vaulted ceiling. Churches made in this style in North America were made in deliberate echo of the Gothic cathedrals of Europe. [Edit to remove erroneous last sentence. Gus beat me to the punch.]

Age alert: I started working downtown (shudder) 24 years ago. Every so often at lunch, I’d go over to see the Liberty Bell in it’s old pavilion. Pre-9/11, even pre-nutcase attacking it with a hammer. In the off-season, you could literally walk right up and just about have the whole place to yourself.

Stumbling home from South Street back to the train one night, we cut through the back of Independence Hall and walked right up to the building. Got on my toes and peeked in the windows, half looking for ghosts. It was maybe 11:30 PM or so.

I wouldn’t advise that now, even if you could get by the barriers that are set up.

320 Gus  Sun, Mar 24, 2013 9:58:21am

Lonsdale, Thomas Preston (1855 - 1900)
ARCHITECT

Thomas P. Lonsdale, prolific designer of churches, public buildings, and institutions, was born in Norristown, PA, and entered Girard College in Philadelphia at the age of nine. Following graduation in 1871 he sought architectural training in the office of another Girard College graduate, James H. Windrim, with whom he remained for over ten years before establishing his own firm in 1885. Until his death at age 46, Lonsdale worked independently; and although his career was cut short by early death, he ran a most successful practice. His Pennsylvania Building for the World’s Columbian Exposition (Chicago, 1893) adapted Philadelphia’s Independence Hall and provided a hallmark in the development of the popular Colonial Revival style. (Published in Harpers Weekly, this building is described as a “reproduction of the more salient features embodied in the historic State-house in Philadelphia. The addition of wide verandas, broad staircases, a roof garden, reception-rooms, and lobbies was absolutely essential.”)

Many of his designs, however, were more flamboyant, including the American Life Building (also known as the Manhattan Building) at 4th and Walnut streets, where the form of the building was broken by towers and pavilions of varying heights, the columns articulated so that what might be called “barrels” actually resembled large, puffy pancakes, and a giant sculptural face (usually identified as a Native American) appeared over the corner column. Although Lonsdale was not singled out for treatment in the “Architectural Aberrations” series which ran in the Architectural Record at the turn of the century, certainly another architect who shared his more individual approach to style, Willis G. Hale, was. Perhaps surprisingly, given his occasionally eccentric approach to design, Lonsdale also produced many designs for churches or other buildings related to Methodist organizations.

Lonsdale had joined the T-Square Club in 1885, but resigned in 1899, probably due to illness. He was also a member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the AIA, and he taught architectural design at the Spring Garden Institute from 1880 to 1884 and served as a Director for the Institute from 1894 to 1897. Devoted, however, to Girard College, he served it in many ways, but chiefly as the president of its very active Alumni Association.

re: #310 Feline Fearless Leader

That’s the amazing thing about synagogue architecture. There really is no such thing as synagogue style in the way that Catholic Churches have specific styles. Jewish communities around the world pretty much used whatever styles were available to them and adopted them, whether they were simple rooms to grand shuls that utilize Gothic, Neoclassical, Romanesque, or other regional styles. It really is amazing to behold to go from around the country and see the styles that have been used in the past, and those that are being built now.

And multiply those styles by those that are used elsewhere in the world.

Last Philly story and then back to work:

We had some friends visit us a while back, and we were walking south on Broad Street. I was pointing out the various buildings used in Trading Places, when the GF starts tapping me on the shoulder. I’m like “Hold on a minute”.

She grabs me by the shoulders and spins me around, growling “Look!” Apparently, we had just walked past Kevin Smith, who was in town filming Jersey Girl. He was chatting up two friends near Ruth Chris Steakhouse.

Smith sees this whole exchange and gets a look on his face like “Oh, WTF. Leave me alone.” Seeing that, I stare for a second and wave. He then gets this hilarious look of disappointment and confusion and hesitantly waves back. We then went on our way.

My friend’s take on all of this? “Who’s Kevin Smith?”

He had a plea deal down to six months. With time served good behavior, etc he probably would have spent 2 months in a white collar, minimum security prison. Prosecutors even tried to put together a no jailtime plea deal but the university wouldn’t sign off on it.

Swartz was never convicted.

re: #357 Killgore Trout

Swartz’s attorney, Elliot Peters, said prosecutors told him, two days before Swartz’s death, that “Swartz would have to spend six months in prison and plead guilty to 13 charges if he wanted to avoid going to trial.”[84] Peters later filed a complaint with the DOJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility, stating that if Swartz didn’t plead guilty, Heymann “threatened that he would seek for Mr. Swartz to serve seven years in prison,” a difference in duration Peters asserts went “far beyond” the disparity encouraged by the plea-bargain portion of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.[85]

Comparing what Swartz did— an extremely grey area ‘crime’ if it even was one— to the Stubenville assholes raping and pissing on a girl is ludicrously stupid.
