Kincannon is very popular with right wingers; he has more than 36,000 followers on Twitter. And his timeline is a non-stop stream of sexism, racism, and ugly hate speech. The perfect representative of the modern day Republican.

My grandfather was in the Royal Canadian Navy and served during the
Second World War.

He taught me a lot about war, politics, duty and honor but one of the first, FIRST things he taught me when I was a young boy was how important it is to respect the sacrifices of those who put their lives on the line so we can can continue to enjoy the freedoms we so cherish.

He talked of how, in 1942, before Pearl Harbor, he and the other allied soldiers found themselves in a place where German victory seemed very likely and the free world, as they knew it, would never exist again. When Allied victory finally came, he said he couldn’t put into words how thankful he was that freedom still reigned.

I was vehemently against the Iraq War and even attended a few anti-war protests, but at the same time I had the utmost respect for those who chose to serve during that time, because they weren’t part of the politics and diplomatic maneuvering that led to the war, they were just men and women who had taken an oath to fight for and, if necessary, die for their country and what it stood for.

I would never, EVER wish a veteran never came home. That is absolutely horrid and an insult to every man and woman who has ever put on the uniform.

What cracked me up was not only how much Archie Bunker sounds just like the current Tea Party rabble, but also that a lot of commenters——-to dumb to see how Bunker’s ignorance is lampooned on the show——-seemed to think that he was tellin’ it like it is. (You’d think that the laugh track would be a subtle hint….)

No, most people realize that there’s something fundamentally unfair about limiting the rights of a particular group because of sexual orientation, and the institution of marriage isn’t threatened by allowing gays to get married.

Newt Gingrich threatens the institution of marriage all by himself, as well as any of the holier than thou socon types who go on to commit adultery and hike the Appalachian Trail.

The GOP stalwarts are resisting gay marriage because their core constituency is made up of older regionalized voters from the South and West, and aren’t exactly going to help them carry national elections. They can rationalize away the decision, but in the end, it’s a losing cause for the GOP. But that wont stop them from trying.

I keep living in fear that they’ll get their chance to cut taxes on the rich and corporations to nothing, (ironically) thoroughly bankrupt the government in the name of “fiscal conservatism” and thus end medicare, social security, medicaid, ACA, etc etc all the while increasing military spending.

I think one idea should be salvaged from the older version of Libertarianism, that it’s wrong for society to punish victimless crimes.

The newer Republican Libertarians like Ron Paul, seem to feel that people have no rights, they just think that they can use Libertarianism to deny power to the federal government so that they can take all rights away from the individual and give states total totalitarian power, thus making the racial, sexist, sexual and religious discrimination these cavemen favor possible again

Libertarianism once meant liberty (and, sadly, no taxation) on the people. Now it means totalitarian control at the state level, no federal government, and more money for the rich.

Somehow in all of it he absorbed the basics of his Christian upbringing, but not the rhetoric. He knew right from wrong essentially. His world view was hijacked by a lot of things, I think it has a lot to do with the effects of war on society.

Yet, he went to work and came home every day. He didn’t break the law. I’m not sure he even broke the commandments. I can’t remember if he swore. did he?

He was ignorant, but not stupid.

Ignorant can learn, stupid can’t.

Maybe the very early “suburbs” around Chicago did, for example. However, today they are called the “inner suburbs” because these areas are right next to the major city limits, and the outer suburbs stretch on for quite a many miles.

We have train service quite far out, even into what some would call East Iowa. Chicago Aristocracy used to summer out this way, so the trains come very far.

The FAA is shutting 149 towers at airports where there are under a threshold number of movements a year. That’s takeoffs/landings, and are primarily involving smaller commercial or regional airports. Most of those towers can have services covered by other air traffic controllers.

The FAA has guidelines.

Part of the problem is that sequestration gave the FAA no leeway on where/how to cut, so they’ve got to cut everything across the board.

Brooklyn/Manhattan used to have a vibrant ferry service, until the Brooklyn Bridge was completed, which more or less put them out of business after 1883. NYC was incorporated in 1898, hastened by the construction of the bridge and subsequent subway and trolley construction.

After 9/11, ferries again became more integral to the transit network in the NYC metro area since the PATH tunnels to WTC were damaged; further ferry routes were instituted, and the rezoning of areas along the waterfront in NYC and NJ have resulted in new ferry service being successful. After Sandy, the ferries also showed their importance and worth as they could start to fill in the breach left by damage to multiple subway tunnels between Manhattan, New Jersey and Brooklyn.

Trivia note: The Brooklyn Dodgers were named after folks in Brooklyn who would dodge the trolleys that came down the streets all the time.

Without bacterial fermentation eating tapai made from cassava would restult in cyanide poisoning. They also ferment cassava in certain parts of Africa for the same reason. Farmers deliberately grow varietals containing cyanide because it’s less prone to be eaten by pests.

fatty was acquitted in the regular trial although this did not take the stigma off of him and he couldn’t really work during the 20s

he outlived the scandal, though, and in 1932 made a series of two-reelers for warner bros, with shemp howard among the actors. these were successful enough for warners to sign him up for a full length movie in june 1933. fatty announced to the press “this is the best day of my life”

that night he died of a fatal heart attack at the age of 46

I was shocked to read a boingboing thread about a pornographer who the Bush administration targeted for an obscenity convinction (and eventually got him 5 years in prison by getting him to sell a DVD online and then getting a conviction based on “community standards” in the super conservative Florida district that they had him send the DVD to).

What shocked me was the moralists in the thread who mostly were in favor of the conviction. Why? Because he did very mild dominance videos with older man/young girl fantasies. Never mind that the actresses were all perfectly legal in their 20’s, some have websites where they promote the same image and more extreme porn, the whole thread was a bunch of white knights fantasizing about saving porn actresses.

I noticed plenty of people saying that young women need to be protected, that not all kinds of sex should become legal at 18 or even (more applicable to these actresses) 25 - ie they were somehow too young. And they refused to listen to the one or two subs who came on to point out that they enjoy/want this sort of treatment that people said was too degrading and deserved jail time…

1) reduce revenues so we’ll be forced to end Medicaid, to cut Medicare deeply, to cut social security deeply. Call “insuring that the government goes broke faster ‘fiscal conservatism’” Lie about what economics entails so that people will vote to jump off the cliff.

2) try to shut down the EPA, claiming that having clean air and water is too much regulation.

3) pass “personhood” bills that outlaw the pill not just abortion. Ie, screw up the sex lives of 98% of straight people of fertile age

4) do everything possible to erase American legal history. Have law schools that elide the First Amendment from it so that you can claim that the US is supposed to be a theocracy

5) try to take away the right to divorce, bringing us back to the old days where couples had to invent crimes to accuse their spouse of to get out of a marriage.

6) oppose health care provisions for the poor based on position papers that claim that unmarried black mother are the cause of both high infant mortality rates and of children who will grow up to be criminals - implying that infant mortality must be encouraged for the good of society

7) try to impose religion, creationism, anti-science crap and bigoted versions of history in schools - try to get rid of the department of education to make that possible

8) promote the idea that the federal authority is unconstitutional as a ploy to get rid of civil rights legislation.

No as if to it. They see themselves as America’s dominant tribe: socially, culturally, economically and numerically. Both of these are accurate. Even Huntsman, the ‘moderate’ candidate, railed at the EPA. And your party really is waging a jihad against abortion.
