Jim Carrey Responds to Fox News: “A Media Colostomy Bag”

“Should be emptied before it becomes a public health issue”
Media • Views: 37,548

Predictably, the right wing media freaked out at Jim Carrey’s “Cold Dead Hand” video lampooning the NRA and Charlton Heston. Fox News has devoted hours of airtime to attacking Carrey, and today he responded:

Since I released my “Cold Dead Hand” video on Funny or Die this week, I have watched Fux News rant, rave, bare its fangs and viciously slander me because of my stand against large magazines and assault rifles. I would take them to task legally if I felt they were worth my time or that anyone with a brain in their head could actually fall for such irresponsible buffoonery. That would gain them far too much attention which is all they really care about.

I’ll just say this: in my opinion Fux News is a last resort for kinda-sorta-almost-journalists whose options have been severely limited by their extreme and intolerant views; a media colostomy bag that has begun to burst at the seams and should be emptied before it becomes a public health issue.

I sincerely believe that in time, good people will lose patience with the petty and poisonous behavior of these bullies and Fux News will be remembered as nothing more than a giant culture fart that no amount of Garlique could cure.

I wish them all the luck that accompanies such malevolence.

No need, Jim, it’s self-emptying. Or, rather, it’s viewership is either dying off due to old age or so crazy that they’re devoting their time to Prison Planet and World Nut Daily.

I really wish that he (and Jenny McCarthy) wasn’t an anti-vaxxer, because, on this particular subject (gun control, the NRA, and the GOP, with a side of Fox News), I totally dig his vibe.

I even imagined him reading that off as Ace Ventura, then as Fire Marshal Bill; hilarity ensued.

Can’t win them all, I guess.

Mystery Malady Kills More Bees, Heightening Worry on Farms

A mysterious malady that has been killing honeybees en masse for several years appears to have expanded drastically in the last year, commercial beekeepers say, wiping out 40 percent or even 50 percent of the hives needed to pollinate many of the nation’s fruits and vegetables.

A conclusive explanation so far has escaped scientists studying the ailment, colony collapse disorder, since it first surfaced around 2005. But beekeepers and some researchers say there is growing evidence that a powerful new class of pesticides known as neonicotinoids, incorporated into the plants themselves, could be an important factor.

I read about a year ago that they suspect that some of the food the keepers use for the hives may also be contributing. Some of the “nutritional supplements” for the bees had a lot of corn syrup and as I remember they thought the syrup also contained other concentrated pesticide residues. I don’t remember the source, but feel free to google away…

EXCLUSIVE: Willie Nelson on same-sex marriage
“I’d never marry a guy I didn’t like,” says the man who once covered “Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly Fond of Each Other.”

Willie Nelson loves love. “Love is what I live on. Love is what keeps me going,” he wrote in his 2006 book The Tao Of Willie. And Wednesday night, in an interview in Austin on his tour bus, Willie said he believes love doesn’t discriminate, “and it shouldn’t be discriminated against.”

Nelson has been watching the Supreme Court arguments over same-sex marriage and the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal law defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman. “[Gay people] should be just as miserable as the rest of us,” quipped Nelson, before giving a more nuanced explanation of what he says has been a life-long, unwavering belief that all people deserve equal protection under the law.

One of, and potentially the largest, contributors to the problem is related to pesticides. Unfortunately the company (Bayer) has very deep pockets and connections which have delayed, redirected, and diluted investigations and reports of their impact. Further complicating the issue is that it isn’t a straight-forward cause and effect.

Re your specific, it’s been demonstrated that a PROBABLE route for neonicotoid entry to colonies is corn syrup supplements which are (as you mention) still carrying the residues of pesticides. This test was in France. Bayer has (again) worked to refute the results.

Honestly, it begins to look like the corporation-climate change (or tobacco) deal again.

I didn’t realize that Kentucky had over-ridden the veto on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act until I just saw Tony Perkins e-mail crowing over it at Joe My God. Great, another unenforceable and unconstitutional law that allows discrimination and bigotry as long as someone claims to hold a religious belief that requires it. Of course this directly conflicts with many Federal statutes so odds are it will be headed to the courts pretty soon, which is why the governor vetoed it in the first place.

More pandering to the Christian conservatives, “See? See what we did for you? Of course it will be struck down in Federal Court later but remember I’m the one who did this for you when the next election comes. You can’t blame me for it being struck down, that was all the evil Federal governments doing!”

What is sickening is that this even works, the beneficiaries of this pandering are just too stupid to see it for what it is and realize that they are being taken for a ride. Arrrggh!

Singer Michelle Shocked sits in at canceled show

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — Her show had been cancelled, but that didn’t stop alternative folk and rock singer Michelle Shocked from showing up at a Santa Cruz nightclub where she staged a sit-in with tape across her mouth that read “Silenced By Fear.”

Moe’s Alley was one of several nightclubs that cancelled Shocked’s gigs after she made what were considered anti-gay comments during a rambling outburst at a show earlier this month.

On Thursday evening, Moe’s Alley owner Bill Welch had replaced her with two local bands that support gay rights, Beaver Fever and Frootie Flavors.

So much WIN in this story, but the tape across her mouth expressing some victimhood complex while being reported in a newspaper is the icing on the cake.

If only she had that tape over her mouth a few weeks ago to hold in the anti-gay tirade.

re: #32 Gus

If NorK does more than bluster, we’re going to see war. I hate this, but will support our action.

My fear is that it’s going to happen; that NorK is so close to the edge of collapse it is the only think Kim or his advisors can think of doing - either they get lucky (by nations just throwing tribute to stop them, or by actually winning), or it just doesn’t matter. Basically, they’re in Sun Tzu’s desperate ground.

Given that, my guess is that the actual performance in North Korea will be similar to what happened in Iraq - that the (known) lack of training and logistical preparation will leave most of the units collapsing even before contact. That in turn gives us - the world, not just the US - a chance to (forgive me) “Do it right”. To set up a post-conflict rebuilding that refutes the Bremer-CPA travesty.

So: Hate, determination, fear, a guess, and a hope.

And a hope that it’s really just bluster, again.

North Korea more or less said as much last week or two weeks ago when they said that they canned the armistice. Then shut down various hotlines.

They’re going to push closer and closer to an actual shooting war to see just how far they can go. I would expect ‘em to try artillery barrages on the disputed islands, or maybe throw a few mines into South Korean waters, as they’ve done in the past couple of years. They might even consider an incursion into the DMZ.

If it goes to a shooting war, it’s going to get real deadly real quick for the South; they have no fallback territory to deal with and Seoul is in range from artillery and missiles. There will be lots of civilian casualties in the South before the South’s military and US and allies can join the fight.

North Carolina governor’s latest moves alienate Latino and LGBT communities

McClatchy Newspapers reported on Friday that McCrory shuttered the state office for Latino affairs, saying through a spokesperson that his administration would rely on an advisory council to handle issues related to the state’s Latino population.

“We are committed to serving the needs of all of North Carolina’s citizens,” spokesperson Thomas Stith said. “We don’t segment our constituents by race or cultural background any more than we separate them by age or gender.”

McCrory shuttering the office comes on the heels of his recent attempt to brand drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants with a pink stripe and the phrase “NO LEGAL STATUS,” which immigration advocates took as a sign McCrory wanted to perpetuate a stigma against immigrants, even those participating in the government’s Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals program, which grants qualified immigrants two-year work visas.

Latino advocates pointed out that McCrory closed the office at a time when the Republican party has expressed more interest in reaching out to Latino communities.

How’s that rebranding going for ya?

OK, like I said in my #50, if it goes to an actual shooting war I think NorK is going to look like Iraq. Yes, there will be civilian casualties - Seoul is just too close to the border. But my review of the training and support of the existing NorK forces leads me to think they’re very much a paper tiger. Faced with approaching and attacking forces they’ll fold. Some will drop into their tunnels, others will become civilians, but either way they’ll rapidly change from attacker to defender.

I probably can’t stress it enough but I’ll try. The key to a strong military is training, followed by logistics. Leadership ranks with morale somewhere around third - you can have successful poorly trained and supported militaries if your leadership and morale is great enough, but the success isn’t because they’re strong.

North Korea doesn’t do anything more than paper and parade exercises. Leaders do not to cooperative, much less integrated, training. Their production has gotten poorer and poorer, to the extent they’ve not only not put out anything “new” but are having trouble maintaining what they’ve got. I /GUESS/ that as much as half their tunnel artillery is actually non-functional due to poor maintenance. That will be second-line stuff, stuff we can’t see easily. And it’s purely a guess, though based on the maintenance and performance we see on the front line.

The other thing to keep in mind is that China would probably intervene with the UN if North Korea slips the leash. It doesn’t want or need a war, and has shown it’s becoming more and more uncomfortable about its junkyard dog.

His opinion on vaccines blows. The song about Heston was not really that funny to me, but given what Heston became at the end of his life, was not in any way a mean treatment of him. The response to it from the ring-wing media was unhinged.

I did a search in this thread for the word vaccine.

Yes, VAX might be an alternative, but I don’t think that not using that spelling makes me seem ignorant.

“…Basically, they’re in Sun Tzu’s desperate ground.” From Sun Tzu: In a desperate position, you must fight.

They’re not in a desperate position out of lack of options. They’ve chosen this path and Jong Un has given himself no leeway to choose a different path. Unless he gets the South to back down, he’s going to be forced to take action militarily or else lose face (a potentially worse fate compared to losing a shooting conflict).

A general gives himself the maximum amount of flexibility and options, lest they get hemmed in. They always look to find alternatives and plan accordingly. A general that doesn’t give themselves options will find themselves on deadly ground.

He’s written a time or two since then about the vaccine issue. Not total anti-vaccine screeds, but plaints that it needs more study - and until then why should we force children to do what may be harmful?

I have learned that there are few I wholly like or dislike. Mr. Carrey reaffirms that lesson.

Bullshit.

My first post in the thread, the fifth one in, referenced his (and McCarthy’s) anti-vax views; even if you didn’t previously know that ‘vax’ was shorthand for ‘vaccine’, the context of the comment should have clued you in.

Double bullshit.

That, in and of itself, doesn’t invalidate his argument in regards to guns and gun control he makes with that video, it just means that even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Arrrggh!

And hence the double standard. Writers with credible journalist resumes have had their views invalidated, not because of anything they write, but because they might have written for an online publication that at some time published something by someone who said or wrote something hateful.

North Korea Says It’s Entering a ‘State of War’ with South Korea; Experts Say It’s Not Really War

According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, North Korea said in a statement on Saturday that it “will deal with every inter-Korean issue in a wartime manner.” The statement then added this rather opaque gem: “Situations on the Korean Peninsula, which are neither in peace or at war, have come to an end.”

Whatever that means, the North Korean declaration stopped short of actually saying it was launching an attack on the South, though it did promise “merciless retaliation” in event of a strike from South Korea or the United States.

Countdown until someone calls Obama a coward for not immediately bombing everything.

I think it’s very good to do a good reminder of the law, but it’s got to be for actual support of candidates— which there’s plenty of.

Sure, but someone in the congregation has to out the pastor by recording his/her remarks. There has to be a clear endorsement of a candidate by name, or at least by party, or transparent political action/support behind a candidate. Urging congregants to vote for the more conservative candidates isn’t a violation of regulations.

The flip side is a pastor coming out specifically against a candidate, like that nutcase (Anderson?) trash-talking Obama in a sermon. That should be grounds for losing tax-exempt status, too, but runs the risk of looking like retaliation by Obama.

Armitage cooperated completely with the FBI and Fitzgerald’s investigation. He turned over all his notes and computers, never hired a lawyer and never asked for immunity. Speaking of action movies:

“G.I. Joe: Retaliation”: The Anti-Obama Conservative’s Fantasy

Asawin Suebsaeng:

…the real draw is that this movie possesses plenty of amazing (but perhaps unintentional) political troll-power.

The crème de la crème of the G.I. Joe: Retaliation trollfest is that—as my colleague Tim Murphy points out—much of it doubles as a conservative anti-Obama fantasy. One of the bad guys (played by Jonathan Pryce) is the Democratic President of the United States, a foreign-born imposter who uses killer drones on American citizens overseas, and desires a world rid of nuclear weapons. As the movie trundles to its climax, the only thing that can stop him is a team of gun-toting insurgents, led by a politically incorrect Army veteran played by Bruce Willis who does nothing but hoard a large arsenal of assault weapons in his house.

DOES THIS REMIND YOU OF ANYONE???

OK, since both Stanley and Floral are here, I want to post this story and get the group’s reaction:

A quick-acting Las Crucen halted an attempted rape at an elementary school - but because of an uncooperative victim, police were unable to make an arrest.

Arthur Sanchez, who lives across the street from Mesilla Park Elementary School, was outside smoking a cigarette just before midnight Nov. 19 when he heard screams from the playground.

Sanchez found a woman with her shirt ripped off and, with his own firearm drawn, ordered the man on top of her to back away as his girlfriend called 911, he told the Sun-News.

“If I wouldn’t have been there, something pretty awful would have happened to that girl,” he said.

But no arrests were made because both the suspect and the victim were drunk and refused to give statements, according to the Las Cruces Police Department report, released Monday.

Officers found the woman on the ground, “screaming ‘help me, help me’ at the top of her lungs,” wearing nothing but pants - her purse, a black sock, a black earring, a black shirt and a black pair of boots scattered nearby, according to Monday’s report. “She would not tell us what happened and she was just crying … (she) just stated she needed help, it hurt, and her head was hurting,” one officer wrote. She eventually told a detective the suspect was a friend of 45 years, with whom she had a relationship, but “she was at no time forced to do anything or was assaulted by anyone. She stated she did not remember, could not explain to us or answer why she did not have her blouse on. All she kept saying was, ‘I don’t remember. I don’t remember.’”

Her alleged attacker, when questioned, was “very defiant and argumentative,” called officers a number of insulting names, had “a strong odor of alcoholic beverages,” and would not provide a statement, the report states.

“Investigations into criminal matters are even more difficult when victims are uncooperative during the interview process,” LCPD Officer Wallace Downs said. “During the initial investigation, the police officers must uncover some sort of criminal activity to continue the investigation and oftentimes this is reliant upon the cooperation of the victim.”

As far as I can see, the armed citizen who stopped the rape behaved correctly, but I want to ask if the group feels that the police did so as well, and if the story was reported right (the article was written by a woman). Please let me know what you think.

Some who carries responsibly knows that shooting is a last resort. The only way that particular armed citizen would have fired was if that was the only way he could stop the drunk man’s unjust assault upon another person, and that is the proper standard.

As far as I can tell, Sanchez and the cops acted responsibly. The police could have arrested the couple for disorderly conduct, or disturbing the peace, though, to give them both time to sober up and stay out of further trouble. Sanchez for his part was responding to cries for help, a pretty stand-up thing to do. Some people would have just gone inside and maybe not even called the cops.

Ari Fleischer is full of shit. He’s basically calling Obama a pussy for not being as gung-ho and trigger happy as his former boss, whose ass he seemingly will continue to kiss forever.

Kinda hard to call Obama a foreign policy wuss given Libya, Afghanistan, bin Laden, drones, etc. But in Fleischer’s world, if he doesn’t have a hard-on for war—ANY war—then he’s either anti-American or limp wristed. Why do we listen to Fleischer? He was the spokesperson for the biggest foreign policy debacle since Vietnam. His “I know something about foreign policy” card should be revoked, along with all members of the Cheney family.

I read some of the comments at the linked article, and a few people made some very good points about how there were lots of other charges the police could have laid (e.g. trespassing on the school property, drunk & disorderly conduct, etc). So, they still could have arrested the man. And if he and the victim had known each other for “45 years”, as the article stated, they must be pretty old, in their 50s at least. What in the hell were they doing in an elementary school playground anyway??

My guess (knowing nothing beyond what’s in the article) is that the woman and the man are in some kind of extremely dysfunctional relationship still, and she may have a kind of battered-woman syndrome making her protective of this idiot. I’d be stunned if he doesn’t have restraining orders or some other kind of criminal activity in his past.

This is a fascinating study, mostly for the unanimous response than for the article.

The article, on PJMedia’s well hidden “lifestyle” page slams Ayn Rand and her influence on the Republican party. It doesn’t mention, by the way, her disrespect for religion, nor her support for gay rights etc, but rather takes on the more universal problem (that liberals would also see) that she is for greed, against helping the poor, and against seeing society as having any collective needs. It also attacks the possibly even more important problem of nonsensical libertarian economics that lead to an unregulated financial market and two melt downs.

The funny thing is that 100% of the commenters are are bitterly opposed to this characterization and deny every fact. They even deny that lack of regulation caused the financial crises, and say that it was the opposite - wall street is too constrained!

Crazy crazy shit, and this includes an audience that is, on average, religious fanatics. Apparently greed is a God above God for the PJ crowd. And denial of the facts of economics (and morality) is a dogma above Church dogma.

Is that true for the average Republican now?

Anybody interested in morality - not necessarily religious monotheists but anyone - would find problems with Ayn Rand and her vision of society.

Put simply, when faced with the One and The Many issue she just ignores it. The fanatical “libertarianism” that worships her fail to acknowledge that humanity exists both as individuals and as many people who compose one larger unit. Both are true. And when it comes to morality then we have to address what is “good” not just for the individual but for the entire unit. Moral codes eventually come down to the whole society impinging upon the individual for the sake over everyone.

And that is why there are governments and why governments create laws and regulations.

Anyway, I don’t expect the hate-marketed crowd at PJmedia to be open to the idea that Ayn Rand and her visions would be considered immoral in many different systems.

NKorea says it’s in state of war with SKorea

North Korea issued its latest belligerent threat Saturday, saying it has entered “a state of war” with South Korea a day after its young leader threatened the United States because two American B-2 bombers flew a training mission in South Korea.

Analysts say a full-scale conflict is extremely unlikely and North Korea’s threats are instead aimed at drawing Washington into talks that could result in aid and boosting leader Kim Jong Un’s image at home. But the harsh rhetoric from North Korea and rising animosity from the rivals that have followed U.N. sanctions over Pyongyang’s Feb. 12 nuclear test have raised worries of a misjudgment leading to a clash.

In a joint statement by the government, political parties and organizations, North Korea said Saturday that it will deal with all matters involving South Korea according to “wartime regulations.” It also warned it will retaliate against any provocations by the United States and South Korea without “any prior notice.”

Perhaps there’s something of Calvinism in American protestantism and that’s why they can’t see the problems with Rand.

The whole concept of The Elect was anti-empathy and anti-charity. If you’re poor it means that God hates you and you’re going to be destroyed in Hell anyway.

Back in the George Bush I days I used to joke that the WASP idea of charity was giving money to the corporations and rich. I didn’t know that it wasn’t a joke.

Someday we will be able to hatch out fully-formed adults, implant them with a basic education chip in their brainstems, and send them out into the world to realize their full potential.

Then we can have a full-on Randian free-for-all out there and it would make sense.

Until then, we grow up dependent on others and on society as a whole to nurture us. I want a social/economic/political system that reflects those interdependencies.

I don’t see the connection to Calvinism, at least as a causal agent. That some of the libertarian Rand-ites today seem to overlap some of the Presbyterian groups in the US is more a marriage of convenience, I propose.

And, the idea of the “elect” goes way before John Calvin. Deep in the history of the western version of Christianity the struggle over “sin” and an omniscient God forced theology into a corner (theodicy) from which it never really escaped. The emphasis on election during the time of Calvin was the anti-papist emphasis that “salvation” could not be bought for given wealth to the institutional Church.

Calvinism was also an attempt to stuff that camel through the eye of the needle. People who are the most driven are often the most financially successful, and they needed a way to reconcile that with their beliefs.

Remember, Chucky Heston played a major role in spreading the myth that the gubmint is cumming to take away yoar guns. He deserves ridicule for that, even posthumously.

And if you believe that is nonetheless the case and are offended at ridiculing him for his statement, then just go get up on the butt-hurt wagon and await your turn to vent your righteous rage. There will be plenty of opportunity…

re: #278 stabby

No, the people who comment on political websites tend to be both more extreme and more active than most members of either party.

This should turn out just fine … a town full of armed vigilantes.

It’s already happening down Mexico way:

Thousands of armed vigilantes have taken over a town in Mexico and arrested police officers after their ‘commander’ was killed and dumped in the street.

The self described ‘community police’ and arrested 12 officers and the town’s former director of public security, who they accuse of taking part in the killing of Guadalupe Quinones Carbajal, 28, on behalf of a local organised crime group.

The 1,500-strong force has also set up improvised checkpoints on the major road running through Tierra Colorado, which connects the capital Mexico City to Acapulco, a coastal city popular with tourists less than 40 miles away.

A tourist heading to the beach with relatives for the Easter weekend was injured on Tuesday after the vigilantes opened fire on his car because he refused to stop at a roadblock.

The takeover comes amid a growing movement of ‘self defence’ groups in the region, which claim to be fighting against drug cartels.

Why the right uses a ‘different standard’ for the Obama family

Uh, we know why.

Even before Iowa Congressman Steve King criticized Sasha and Malia Obama’s spring break trip, the vacation had provided fodder for the far right media. Few people understand that better than Salon.com’s editor-at-large Joan Walsh, who found herself part of the controversy.

Walsh became the target of right-wing media attacks after she weighed in on the issue, criticizing the commentators who were targeting the first daughters. Her major complaint: “For decades it’s been a convention of journalism that you don’t write about the minor children of presidents unless they’re involved in an official capacity. You don’t locate them, you don’t say the specific hotel they’re staying and the Breitbart folks just flouted that convention.”

The decision to break that convention was the primary motivation for a recent article Walsh wrote–which made her, in turn, the focus of right-wing scrutiny for an article she wrote about the Bush daughters more than a decade ago.

More Patton:

The more I see of Arabs the less I think of them. By having studied them a good deal I have found out the trouble. They are the mixture of all the bad races on earth, and they get worse from west to east, because the eastern ones have had more crosses.

Letter to Frederick Ayers (5 May 1943), published in The Patton Papers 1940-1945 (1996) edited by Martin Blumenson, p. 243

The difficulty in understanding the Russians is that we do not take cognizance of the fact that he is not a European, but an Asiatic, and therefore thinks deviously. We can no more understand a Russian than a Chinaman or a Japanese, and from what I have seen of them, I have no particular desire to understand them, except to ascertain how much lead or iron it takes to kill them. In addition to his other Asiatic characteristics, the Russian have no regard for human life and is an all out son of bitch, barbarian, and chronic drunk.

Statement (8 August 1945), as quoted in General Patton : A Soldier’s Life (2002) by Stanley P. Hirshson, p. 650

In the second place, Harrison and his ilk believe that the Displaced Person is a human being, which he is not, and this applies particularly to the Jews, who are lower than animals.

Diaries, General Patton : A Soldier’s Life (2002) by Stanley P. Hirshson, p. 661

We entered a synagogue which was packed with the greatest stinking bunch of humanity I have ever seen. Either these Displaced Persons never had any sense of decency or else they lost it all during their period of internment by the Germans…. My personal opinion is that no people could have sunk to the level of degradation these have reached in the short space of four years.

Mississippi governor appoints anti-choice activist to state health board

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant nominated anti-abortion activist Terri Herring to the State Board of Health in spite of Herring’s complete lack of medical or health care related training. According to the Jackson Free Press, Herring will be replacing Dr. Ellen P. Willis on a board that is otherwise made up almost entirely of physicians, nurses and other medical professionals.

According to the Free Press, the 11-member state board “provides policy direction for the Mississippi Department of Health, appoints a state health officer to operate the agency; approves the state health plan; and approves all rules and regulations of the agency.”

Herring’s personal website is dominated by the logo for the anti-choice Pro-Life America Network (PLAN). She has lobbied the state government in favor of fetal heartbeat legislation, fetal personhood laws and other legislation designed to restrict women’s access to birth control and abortion services.

I’ll repeat what I wrote in the previous thread — whatever Charlton Heston may have believed in his earlier life, by the time he was head of the NRA he was a despicable racist and far right loon. Quote from his infamous “cold dead hands” speech:

The Constitution was handed down to guide us by a bunch of those wise old dead white guys who invented this country. Now, some flinch when I say that. Why? It’s true…they were white guys. So were most of the guys who died in Lincoln’s name opposing slavery in the 1860s. So why should I be ashamed of white guys? Why is “Hispanic pride” or “black pride” a good thing, while “white pride” conjures up shaved heads and white hoods? Why was the Million Man March on Washington celebrated in the media as progress, while the Promise Keepers March on Washington was greeted with suspicion and ridicule? I’ll tell you why: Cultural warfare.
