Those water rockets can be very dangerous, you shouldn’t make light of them. Once I accidentally set one off in the house (I filled it in the bathroom and was stupidly pumping it while heading to the front door) and it flew straight across the room and smashed the etched glass front of my mothers antique “family heirloom” grandfather clock.

I got a butt whipping with a spatula from mom and then another with a belt from dad once he came home. I’m telling you, those rockets are farking dangerous!!!

Edit:BTW, all was not lost, a restorer sandwiched the broken glass between two other very thin sheets of glass and made it look pretty good, only a couple of the larger cracks really showed from a distance.

When I started programming, the company I worked for still used Hollerith punch cards for a particular class of overnight job runs. It was a pain in the ass, and I’m convinced it was just a way of discouraging programmers from running that particular type of job. Even then punch cards were essentially obsolete.

But damn, I’m old.

I recently threw away a lot of computer-age equivalents of 8-tracks: the 100MB IOmega Zip disk.

They were probably chock-full of stuff from the ANSI BBS art and “demo scene” groups of the early 90s. Warez versions of PKZip and TheDraw. Possibly even bootleg copies of Sierra games like Leisure Suit Larry and SpaceQuest.

Sigh. They were somehow defiant in their uselessness, however.

Even DVDs are beginning to seem ludicrously obsolete at this point.

I was able to run my BBS and FidoNet mailer 24/7 *AND* still play X-Wing at the same time (while watching The X-Files and Star Trek: The Next Generation), with no perceptible loss in performance. True preemptive multitasking seemed like a miracle compared to the timeslicing I was accustomed to with Desqview.

IBM failed spectacularly. Windows 95 was technically inferior to OS/2 in every possible way, but Big Blue had a bunch of drunken capuchin monkeys for a marketing force.

I was one of the many people who installed OS-2 because Windows 95 was limited to having virtual no more than double physical ram. And we found that windows programs didn’t look too good in OS-2 and they crashed sometimes too, though unlike windows 95, crashing programs didn’t affect OTHER programs or take down the whole operating system.

like a year later we all found out that the amount of virtual memory could be changed by changing a number in a text file … really simple, but Microsoft had kept that setting secret.

We had gone through the whole trouble of adding more disks partitioning them and putting up with instability for nothing.

i heard microsoft fucked with them. the story is that msoft and ibm had a contract to co-develop os/2. after a lot of time and money had been spent, msoft told ibm, “oh, nevermind. we decided to go with the somewhat inferior OS we developed all by ourselves”

re: #101 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

When I finally got a computer powerful enough to run OS/2 2.0, I felt like I was In The Future.

&get off my lawn&

I was trying to get started in consulting so I bought a 386sx laptop with VGA and an enormous 16 mb of ram. I ran the original NT Beta on that and that was painful at best. But OS/2 ran like a charm on it. I wanted to run a Unix on it but this was before Linus and SCO & the rest were way out of my price range. I remember the first release of Jolitz BSD for 386 rand decently on it but that wasn’t anywhere near ready for production.

“off my lawn” indeed.

Limbaugh On Petition Against Carson: ‘We’re Losing The Country’

After already waving the white flag on same-sex marriage, Limbaugh on Friday lamented the student-led movement against Carson.

“These are students where this guy works, and they don’t want him to be their commencement speaker because of his political beliefs as espoused on TV,” Limbaugh said, according to an official show transcript. “Medical students! Not social workers, medical students. To me that’s evidence that… I don’t know what it is. We’re losing the country or what have you.”

He picked up the rant later.

“I still can’t believe that the med students at Johns Hopkins said, “We don’t want Ben Carson here.” You…? (interrupting) It’s over same-sex marriage. Of course. I know he made a comment about same-sex marriage. Of course. I forgot to throw that in,” Limbaugh continued. “He spoke about same-sex marriage, and he offended them. They don’t want him there. They don’t want him there. Do you understand why I said this is inevitable now, folks?”

Sore Loser Rally!

“…the campaign exploded after the City Council’s February decision to rename three municipal parks: Confederate Park; Nathan Bedford Forrest Park, named after a Confederate lieutenant general and the first Grand Wizard of the KKK; and Jefferson Davis Park, named after the president of the Confederacy.”
…snip…
“…Organizers promise hundreds of Klansmen will descend on Memphis from North Carolina, Virginia, Indiana, Alabama, Georgia and Maryland.

“There’s so many coming, it’s hard for me to keep track of ‘em,” said Imperial Wizard Chris Barker, who is the head of the Loyal White Knights, which has a presence in 15 states, mostly east of the Mississippi.

Barker refers to the rally as a “white unity event,” and a protest of the council’s attempt “to erase white people out of the history books.”

Because Fischer still holds out this hope that there’s some way he and his fellow travelers can “take back” America. That they live with this fantasy where the US will feel a “backlash” from straying from what they view as the “moral path” and they’ll be there to lead them back to greatness.

What’s the thinking that lets a guy like Rush who say was arrested in the Domincan Republic for showing up to party with someone else’s bottle of Viagra, and who was arrested for oxycontin abuse lecture the rest of us on morality 24/7?

And this doesn’t bother his audience even slightly. They’re not against people ignoring the rules, as long as you pretend to be totally for those rules. They’re for appearance, not reality.

Whiplash

One of the folks we’re talking about just asked me on Twitter, in so many words, What happened to free speech? Now if you don’t agree with gay marriage you’re in trouble? Obviously we all have free speech. But what people usually want with free speech is the ability to speak their mind and not have people think worse of them for it. And on gay rights if not quite yet on full marriage equality, these folks sense they may be losing that right.

Wingnuts love their hatred.

Quote from a thread at PJ

The “author” wrote: “The bottom line: Anti-gay marriage advocates aren’t giving up and aren’t going anywhere. Those who see opposition to gay marriage as a moral calling or as a cause to save “traditional marriage” may lose a round or two in the courts, but rest assured that they are girding their loins for battle in state legislatures across the country. There are still 41 states that have not approved same-sex marriage, and for the marriage-equality crowd, it’s still going to be a long, uphill climb to achieve their goal.”

Rewritten for accuracy: “The bottom line: [pro]marriage advocates aren’t giving up and aren’t going anywhere. Those who see opposition to [changing the legal definition of] marriage as a moral calling or as a cause to save [marriage] may lose a round or two in the courts, but rest assured that they are girding their loins for battle in state legislatures across the country. There are still 41 states that have [protected] marriage, and for the [anti-marriage Leftist bigot] crowd, it’s still going to be a long, uphill climb to achieve their goal [of creating a legal fiction that two (or more) people of the same sex can “marry” one another, when in reality they cannot; neither physically marry, nor mentally/emotionally marry].”

See what he did there? He’s too prejudiced to imagine the emotional life of a lesbian or gay therefor lesbians and gays don’t have emotional lives.

We need a double wingnut font for stuff this crazy:

waxwing01
This age being swamped in the cesspool of secular atheism and agnostic culture where majority of husbands and wives have descended into unfaithful to each other, an abomination in front of the HOLY GOD consider what jesus said about marriage:
24 Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 26 Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’[d]? 27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”
If husband stays faithful to wife and wife stays faithful to husband as you worship God year after year sexual desire from nature gets less and then you are ready to see Divine Love come down from heaven and how normal it is to live as the angels in heaven live with the revelation how this animal sex not only is temporary but so inferior to divine love when Divine Love transforms you is impossible to rebel against this new nature except by willfill rebellion against God to create your own world distant from God as the rebel angels did but their punishment was very extreme by human standards
When you understand this then you should have choice by see the wisdom of having only one human being as life time marriage to become angels in heaven
Thus it is the faithfulness to each other that allows the two gay persons to follow this same road to becoming angels in heaven
Christian must be restored to sanity and preach against the great sin of unfaithfulness in marriage
For this reason God made Jerusalem captive to the King of Babylon
