Pat Robertson: Simple Africans More Likely to Experience Miracles Than Over-Educated Americans

We’re missing out by not being ignorant
Wingnuts • Views: 31,311

Pat Robertson, the nutty uncle of the evangelist right, neatly sums up the problem with America in this clip from Right Wing Watch: Americans have too much book learnin’, and it keeps them from seeing miracles all the time like they do in Africa, where they’re “simple and humble.”

I think he hits the wingnut trifecta in this one: anti-intellectual, anti-science and patronizingly racist.

“Well, we are so sophisticated, we think we’ve got everything figured out, we know about evolution, we know about Darwin, we know about all these things that says God isn’t real, we know about all this stuff,” Robertson lamented, “in many schools, in the most advanced schools, we have been inundated with skepticism and secularism.”

Unlike these too-educated Americans, “overseas they are simple and humble” and are more ready to accept miracles.

Simple, humble, and ready to accept miracles. Sounds like the Romneys…except for the simple and humble part.

It’s worth noting that Pat Robertson’s father was a staunch segregationist senator. So, my surprise that he’s using racist bullshit is nil.

Arthur C. Clarke famously said

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

But he was encouraging technology, and looking towards the future, not wishing us back to a “simpler and humbler” time.

Besides, one of Clarke’s other favorite sayings was this:

“The universe is not only stranger than we imagine, it’s stranger than we can imagine.”

Intellectual humility writ large.

Funny Vanity Fair jab:

Play Republicans-Supporting-Gay-Marriage Bingo!

Well….

STUART STEVENS: First, I think we have to say, 200 hours ago, Hillary Clinton hadn’t announced that she was for gay marriage. The 2008 Democratic platform that Barack Obama ran on was not for gay marriage. So I think it’s good to take a step back and look at where the country is on this and where people are thinking about it and looking into their hearts and coming to a decision. I think to try to divide this between political lines is really the wrong way to go. And it’s clearly not a party issue when you have Hillary Clinton following Rob Portman. I don’t think people are looking at it as an R and D issue.

THEY DON’T ALL SUPPORT IT EITHER!!!!1

re: #45 iceweasel

What do you mean by incompatibility with Creation?

Well, if I had power over all mankind I would be a tyrant. With best of intentions sure, but that’s just self awareness. From the perspective of much of humanity I’d be a massive buzzkill. If we’re being honest with ourselves, and why should God be any different, power corrupts. It’s why the old testament God is such a gigantic prick, that’s realistic, people would be pissing you off constantly, and after several thousand years even the most well adjusted personality is going to fucking lose it, fly off the handle and drown everything.

Then there’s the whole fate vs. free will thing. Why would God endow man with free will if there’s some kind of actual plan for everything, I mean that’s a huge handicap. I think if there is or ever was a God actually worth worshiping that early on they separated themselves completely from Creation out of love.

“You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

Fischer: Homosexuality Is Immoral Because God Says So

On his broadcast today, Fischer dedicated an entire segment to making the case that God says homosexuality is immoral and that is all there is too it and so this ought to be the central argument made against it every single time.

“God’s wisdom trumps man’s wisdom every time,” Fischer declared, “and it does so in every circumstance … It is immoral behavior and we shouldn’t have any hesitation in saying that. We ought to have no qualms about declaring that it is immoral, sinful behavior. How do we know that? Because we have God’s perspective, we have God’s counsel, we have God’s wisdom and that trumps man’s wisdom. It does not matter what man says about homosexual conduct; we know that it is immoral and sinful behavior because God has revealed that to us in his word and has revealed it to us in nature”:

Simple solution: Subpoena God and let him make his argument in court. If he chooses not to appear, he’s waived his right to have his argument heard.

Louie Gohmert Opposes Gun Control Because Gay Marriage Leads to Bestiality

In fact, I had this discussion with some wonderful, caring Democrats earlier this week on the issue of, well, they said “surely you could agree to limit the number of rounds in a magazine, couldn’t you? How would that be problematic?”

And I pointed out, well, once you make it ten, then why would you draw the line at ten? What’s wrong with nine? Or eleven? And the problem is once you draw that limit ; it’s kind of like marriage when you say it’s not a man and a woman any more, then why not have three men and one woman, or four women and one man, or why not somebody has a love for an animal?

There is no clear place to draw the line once you eliminate the traditional marriage and it’s the same once you start putting limits on what guns can be used, then it’s just really easy to have laws that make them all illegal.

Earlier in the discussion, Gohmert called on Christians to take a more active role in politics … because otherwise their churches are going to be forced to hire cross-dressing Satan-worshipers:

I am calling for you today to come together with me and the Black Robe Brigade to insist as both Christians and Republican voters that Chairman Priebus resign. Limbaugh freaks out: ‘Vladimir Putin is saying things I agree with’ on LGBT rights

“It freaks me out,” Limbaugh said. “I have to tell ya, it freaks me out that Vladimir Putin is saying things that I agree with. The Russian president has opposed the adoption of Russian orphans by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender foreign couples, and has instructed the government and supreme court there to prepare changes to existing law by July 1.”

He added it’s “ironic” that he now agrees with Putin, even after growing up fearing the Russians and being told that liberals secretly love Soviet-style communism.

“To the left, and still today, the United States was the great Satan,” Limbaugh insisted. “And so now here’s a KGB officer who is — this guy is what he is, he’s an old communist — and he’s speaking out against the popular issue of the day in Russia.”

Ironic, yeah, that is the word for it.

Meanwhile, because I have FB, I see how people I thought gave a damn and have been telling me how they are constantly busy are out doing stuff.

It’s dawning on me that I am not important to anyone. People want to know why I am angry? This is why. The feeling of knowing no matter how hard I have worked to try and improve, it will never be enough. That, and the fact anger is at least a distraction from falling into a bottomless pit of despair.

I feed the anger on Norway so I won’t end up imploding completely.

Dude, this is not appropriate to post at LGF; we’re not a therapy session, and it sounds like you should be talking person to person with someone about this. If you feel like you need help, you should do something to get that help. Posting comments like that at LGF is not getting help.

“But, if we assume your God’s existence, doesn’t that mean your God created us with these brains and with the ability to learn stuff and think rationally? Doesn’t that suggest your God might WANT us to learn stuff and think rationally, and fulfill our potential?”

“No. Because our brains were messed up in The Fall. Adam and Eve were childlike and humble and trusting. They had everything provided for them and didn’t have to think or any desire to do so. With The Fall, sin entered into us and we took up learning and reasoning because we were arrogant enough to think we could be like God and could figure it all out ourselves and live without God’s help.”

“Wait a minute. Do you think Adam and Eve were created without any sin or flaw? After all, could a perfect God create less than perfect creatures? If Adam and Eve were originally without sin, how could they have committed the ORIGINAL sin—eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil? That had to require a level of independent thought and rationalization they shouldn’t have been capable of. The Serpent shouldn’t have been able to convince them to eat from the tree…his arguments should have been meaningless to them. So actually, God had to have created humans with the capacity for sin—free will, independent thought. It didn’t come from The Fall—we were, essentially, created already fallen. We had the ability, the outcome was inevitable. For that matter, God had to have created ANGELS with the capacity for sin, since Lucifer sinned and fell. Why exactly did God do this? Why did a perfect God create a universe with a built-in flaw? Your explanation is ‘God works in mysterious ways.’ Mine is, ‘Your God is really f’d up.’”

If he’s omniscient, he already knew that it had flaws. And if he’s omnipotent, he could have created us (and the universe) without flaws.

Your explanation is ‘God works in mysterious ways.’ Mine is, ‘Your God is really f’d up.’”

If you have insurance, go now and find yourself a therapist who deals with people who have Autism Spectrum Disorders. There are plenty of them out there but you have to be willing and persistent sometimes to find one. Talk therapy makes a big difference. But it’s up to you, you’re an adult and seem to be pretty bright. There are plenty of local autism support groups and various advocacy groups that might help too, but you have to be willing to accept the help.

I’m a mom to a young man with Asperger’s, the social isolation is crippling and not something you need to have continue. There are places to get help but you have to be open and willing to search. Make some calls, meet some people and families dealing with the same issues as you, they are out there. Social skills classes, meetups with others like yourself, helping others on the spectrum through local groups and talk therapy would probably go a long way to break through the isolation you feel. But your mileage may vary….

Rep. Amash: ‘More sensible’ to ban abortions after three days and ‘certain’ birth control

A libertarian-leaning Republican congressman from Michigan who has been billed as the “new Ron Paul” says that he would ban “abortion-causing” birth control and a woman’s right to choose abortion more than three days after conception.

In an interview published on Monday, Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) told Reason‘s Nick Gillespie that he favored as little federal government as possible on issues like same sex marriage.

“I don’t think there should be federal definition of marriage,” Amash explained. “So I think the federal government should just stay out of this. Really, marriage should be a private contract that has nothing to do with government.”

But when it came to abortion, the Michigan Republican said that he wanted to see the government take a major role in forcing women to go through with unwanted pregnancies.

“It’s a tricky question, but where we have it now is not correct,” Amash insisted. “It should be closer to the point of conception, whether it’s instantly or the first three days. I think that’s more sensible. That’s what I think would be correct.”

You sir, are a fucking moron.

Tennessee Republicans threaten to kill GOP voucher bill over fear of funding Muslim schools

Republican lawmakers in Tennessee are threatening to block Republican Gov. Bill Haslam’s school voucher bill over fears that Muslim schools could receive funding.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported on Monday that Haslam hinted that he would withdraw his bill after objections from Republican lawmakers that it was not broad enough and that the vouchers could be used by Islamic schools.

Over the weekend, state Sen. Jim Tracy (R) had told The Murfreesboro Post that he had “considerable concern” that tax dollars could go to schools that teach principles from the Quran.

Report: Federal Prosecutor Withdraws From Aryan Brotherhood Of Texas Case

An assistant U.S. attorney in Houston has withdrawn from a large federal case against alleged members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas prison gang, the defense attorney for one of the case’s 34 defendants told The Dallas Morning News on Tuesday.

The defense attorney, Richard O. Ely II, told the Morning News that he received an email Tuesday morning from the prosecutor, Jay Hileman, in which Hileman informed Ely that he was off the case.

Ely, a former prosecutor who described himself as a good friend of Hileman’s, told the Morning News that Hileman is likely concerned about his family after the recent killings of two prosecutors in Kaufman County, Texas.

“He’s obviously made a decision based on something,” Ely said.

Angela Dodge, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Houston, did not confirm or deny the Hileman’s withdrawal to the Morning News. TPM’s attempts to reach Dodge were not immediately successful.

a) capitalism isn’t a political system. It’s an economic system. Major problems happen when people try to make capitalism their political system.

b) There is more than one flavor of capitalism, some of which are much more compatible with democracy than others.

Agreed on a. When capitalism becomes a political system it reduces the people in it to no more than producing/consuming economic entities. Which isn’t too far from what we are now.

On b. I don’t know enough about economics to say, but I believe that capitalism is just subset of commerce. We’re just careless with our language so we label things that, in my opinion are not capitalism as capitalism. Things like the stock market, arbitrage and other speculative activities aren’t capitalism.

Now it occurs to me I’m being sloppy with my language. ;)

However I believe that any economic system is going to try to short circuit or corrupt any sort of democracy because, simply, democracy is often not good for business.

In an interview with arch-conservative radio host Mark Levin, rising African-American conservative avatar Dr. Ben Carson said on Monday that he believes that white liberals are “the most racist people there are,” and that they are critical of him solely because they want to keep him from leaving “the plantation.”

Carson blamed the recent flap over his comments equating same sex marriage with bestiality and child molestation on a full court press by the left to silence him by using his own words against him.

“They want to shut us up completely,” Carson said. “I represent an existential threat to them. They need to shut me up, they need to delegitimize me.”
