I really thought that Rick Perry was going to take his lower taxes, less regulation = more jobs message all the way to the convention.

Given the state of the current GOP, it is likely that he will have another run at it, if he can manage to remember more than three things at once, he might stand a fair-to-middlin’ chance.

Today, Southern California kids still go to the beach and catch waves, but there’s not nearly the freedom or the access that Funicello’s films celebrated. There are far more surfers crowding the waves, that’s true, but it’s hard to find the on-the-sand goofiness and camaraderie portrayed in “Beach Blanket Bingo” or “How to Stuff a Wild Bikini.” And nobody is writing songs like “Surfin’ Safari,” “Surfin USA” or “Secret Surfing Spot.”

Do other parts of the country have pollen counts like the Southeast? I don’t ever remember Spring in Ohio being like this. Today’s count is 4151. Everything outside is covered in yellow powder. You can’t even open the windows to enjoy the nice temps. I had to actually turn on the a/c yesterday because the temp inside was higher than it was outside. Life could be much worse, obviously, but this SUCKS.

Heh. There was even a “Haus Eisenauer” in the village where I lived on the Rhine, I guess the occupants were some distant relatives of Ike.

In any case, I think the Eisenhower Building in Frankfurt has been taken over by the Goethe University in Frankfurt. (just re-checked that)

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The President submitted his budget, and it pretty much includes a laundry list of items that the GOP has repeatedly said it wants, but now watch as the GOP rejects because it also includes tax hikes and loophole closures that would add revenue from those in the top tax bracket.

At the same time, there’s a reported deal on a not-quite-universal background check bill in the Senate.

That deal would exempt transactions within families, but it would strengthen the current background check system. That’s a step in the right direction and is geared towards peeling off members of the House GOP who might have balked at a true universal check system that included a method for family transactions to be included.

I’d expect this version to pass the Senate but the problem is that the House will probably water down the provisions further, and that the compromise bill will be… well… compromised. Better than nothing, but not nearly enough.

Pa. Man Arrested for Making Bomb Threat Outside White House

WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — A 44-year-old Pennsylvania man has been arrested after police say he made a bomb threat outside the White House early Wednesday morning.

Officials say Krzysztof Wasik of Hazle Township, Pa. approached an officer at the White House gates Wednesday morning and warned that a bomb would detonate in a truck parked in the 800 block of Vermont Avenue.

His threats prompted a large-scale investigation by the Secret Service, Metropolitan Police and Park Police.

Wasik is charged with making felony threats and is being held pending a court appearance. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

Authorities established a large perimeter and closed area streets for nearly two hours. The Vermont Avenue entrance to the McPherson Square Metro Station was also closed for a time.

Streets were reopened after nothing dangerous was found inside the truck.

Syrian Rebel group pledges loyalty to al-Qaida

As the situation in Syria continues to remain unstable, the Islamist rebel group al-Nusra has officially proclaimed its allegiance to al-Qaida via an audio tape posted online on Wednesday.

In the tape, the group’s leader, Abu Mohammed al-Golani said, “the sons of Nusra Front renew their pledge (of allegiance) to the Sheikh of Jihad Ayman al-Zawahri and declare obedience.”

This statement comes only two days after al-Zawahri released his own audio tape calling on Syrian rebel groups to establish an Islamist state if they succeed in dispelling under-siege President Bashar Ashad.

While the group pledged it’s allegiance to al-Qaida, they distanced themselves from an Iraqi group called the Islamic State of Iraq who yesterday announced the unification of the two groups.

Bill O’Reilly On The 1950s: “White America Was Kind Of Unified” And That “Made It Easier For Society To Function”
What racism?

What the fuck is a “white America”?

Piece of shit.

I watched the piece, it says nothing of any objective substance beyond quoting a few statistics about what has improved (high school completion rate) and what has declined (number of children born in wedlock).

Neo-Nazi network uncovered in German prisons

BERLIN - German authorities said on Wednesday they had uncovered a network of far-right activists in prisons communicating by secret code.

Among the names on the network’s address list was that of a woman who goes on trial next week accused of a series of racially motivated murders.

Wednesday’s revelations are embarrassing for Germany, which has been shaken by charges that for decades its intelligence services bungled the monitoring of far-right groups.

Every obviously horrible thing that gets said on that channel convinces me that we’re fast approaching the day when we can say that Fox has jumped the shark and their audience is too marginalized to matter.
Just a couple decades for more senile old farts to finish raging against the dying of the light.

What to look for if North Korea launches a missile? Well, in advance of the launch, they’d probably have to issue a NOTAM, which would give some indication as to missile trajectory. The last time they did a multi-stage launch to orbit, there were discrepancies between the announced NOTAM and the stated purpose of the launch - they could do the launch as promised, but not the stated science and research mission objective.

The NOTAM hasn’t been issued so far.

Next, one has to look at where the launch would be carried out. According to reports, it’s likely to be done from the Musudan-ri facility.

There’s been activity there, so this appears to be where the launch will originate and based on prior activity, the launch is probably going to occur within the next two months.

I’d discount reports about there being some kind of panic or unease among the North Korean population about the possibility of a missile test or Jong Un’s bellicosity. They’re not exactly getting an uncensored take on world or domestic events. They’ve got the state-sponsored propaganda and that’s it. That’s going to color their view on the prospective launch - particularly how Jong Un and the North is framing this as a defense against US imperialism and nuclear threats (even though it’s the North that has done the nuclear weapons threats against the South and US).

Look at the candidates that the Republicans ran for president and ask youself which ones of those would be capitalizing on North Korea and trying to stir up a panic if he were in office right now.

I bet Romney would be using it to have another excuse to pretend to be tough, and Santorum would be going full ballistic nutcase.

Romney would just offer to buy North Korea and run it out of business…

He’d probably say that it was a proxy for “our greatest threat, Russia”

Remember the outrage when DHS put out that report on right wing extremism in the US?
Remember all the faux outrage by the right?
Remember how it turned out to be a good thing to monitor them?

But when I think of Herman Cain I just remember that slow greasy smile. Heh. If that wouldn’t give Kim Jong Un the creeps then nothing would.

Meanwhile, with far less fanfare, Pakistan launched its own nuclear-capable missile.
