Game of Thrones night. Was listening to Outlaw Country on the way home from Lake Tahoe today, and Hillbilly Jim (yes, the wrestler, and also a goofy DJ) was interviewing some other red-neck who does some hunting program, and the guy was talking about his new yellow lab puppy, that his daughter named Daenerys, after the blonde gal in GoT who has the dragons. I thought it was pretty funny…the mix of red-neck hillbilly and pop-culture.

Quote of the second

Clara Oswin Oswald (The Victorian One) was born on the same day Doctor Who started airing and died at 26 which is how old the show was when it stopped airing.

Ellie Oswald died the day of the first episode of the new series (the day ‘Rose’ was set)

Greetings form Florida

Florida battles slimy invasion by giant snails

In some Caribbean countries, such as Barbados, which are overrun with the creatures, the snails’ shells blow out tires on the highway and turn into hurling projectiles from lawnmower blades, while their slime and excrement coat walls and pavement.

A typical snail can produce about 1,200 eggs a year and the creatures are a particular pest in homes because of their fondness for stucco, devoured for the calcium content they need for their shells.

The snails also carry a parasitic rat lungworm that can cause illness in humans, including a form of meningitis, Feiber said, although no such cases have yet been identified in the United States.

Why nothing meaningful will ever be done to prevent climate change - exhibit #887620: Media companies, in this case Gannett, continually publish intentionally misleading material by minor nobodies whose official pedigree get overstated:

‘Unqualified’ scientists stand to gain from hysteria of global warming

The Soapbox by Professor William Gray in the April 4 Coloradoan points out correctly the news media’s eagerness to embrace uncritically the catastrophic global warming scenarios. The Coloradoan is certainly guilty of endorsing the claims of unqualified “scientists” in this regard.

Walking to the post office and back late tonight… the thought that occupied the caverns of my mind is how difficult it is to change anything that involves humans.

We’re so creatures of habit that change really just creeps along, a bit faster here, a bit slower there, but it just creeps.

As a society we’ve demonstrated over and over that politics is just a game, a form of entertainment (not unlike Ted Talks), where the ultimate goal is just to position ourselves continually in our societal pecking order, in the hopes of not slipping down a notch or two.

Hmmm… I think we’re all pretty much alike, with small variations. Over decades the multitude of choices we make (and those made for us) add up to a different life-path between you and me and anyone else, but we all started more similar than we might want to admit to ourselves.

And in the end, we all end up the same too.

A few people seem to make a bigger impact in the bigger picture, but most of us just live day to day, until we do no more.

1. Sally Field is quite a fine actress and excellent as Mary Todd. It’s too bad she has that “Gidget” and “Flying Nun” stereotype attached to her for roles she played over 40 years ago. She has to be what, 65 years old now?

88 Glenn Beck's Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut  Mon, Apr 15, 2013 5:03:02am

I’m posting this from a misty hill in Costa Rica. We took the bus from the coast to the interior, which was cramped but otherwise trouble-free. It’s always the last leg of the journey, though— Costa Rica isn’t really a street name culture, so the names of the streets are kind of randomly assigned, just various numbers, and a lot of time people decide that they’d rather live on caille 17 than caille 15 so they switch the signs. Or they have a few extra caille 21 signs so they name four or five streets caille 21.

So we missed our connecting bus, and had to take a taxi to our final hotel, which cost a wincing amount of money. But at the end we arrived at our simple but really nice B&B here near Arenal volcano. It’s a vegetarian place, we’re the only guests, and the awesome family cooked us a meal with herbs taken directly from their garden and when we were done our scraps were added to the compost to go back into the garden.

It’s been a really interesting trip so far. It’ll take awhile to really digest it all, but one of my favorite things so far has just been Costa Ricans. The slogan around here is “pura vida”, which means ‘the pure life’ but actually means “don’t sweat the small stuff” or “it’s all just life, man, take it easy, enjoy what you can and learn from the rest”. And it comes from, apparently, a 1965 Mexican movie of that title, which I’ll have to watch. I don’t know how ‘pure life’ can mean ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’, but it’s a great philosophy no matter what.

And it’s not said in like, a hippie-dippiesh kind of way, but halfway between soulfully sincere and ironically amused. Did your car get a flat and you have no replacement, so you can’t go on the hike you’d planned? Pura vida, go sit on the beach. Or, as one guide said, “There’s rarely only one way to be happy. If you get disappointed in one thing, do another. Or, I guess, you could just stay angry.”

There’s other interesting social stuff here. One of them is that all the houses have bars on the windows, or substantial fences and gates around the houses— but then the gates are open, the front doors are open, and people are just sitting around taking it as it comes. People aren’t worried about ‘home invasion’, just having their stuff stolen while they’re away, and one guy referred to the bars as ‘removing temptation from the unfortunate’.

I doubt I really have any great insights into Costa Rican culture after this brief visit, but it’s definitely made me eager to learn more.

The way Habitat affiliates are organized, each one is paired with a foreign sister. A ‘tithe’ of our funds go to our sister (either Costa Rica or Honduras, IIRC) and theirs is set aside for us. Years ago our sister affiliate finally scraped together enough money, and a group from there brought a check for a house we built in Lower Alabama. Proud moment all around.

The 10 most segregated urban areas in America

Milwaukee is consistently rated one of the country’s most segregated metro areas. Like Detroit and most places on this list, Milwaukee has been battered by deindustrialization, with segregated urban blacks disproportionately hurt as jobs and the tax base suburbanized and moved away.

“Most of our history is very similar to Chicago, Cleveland or even Baltimore,” says Marc Levine, professor of history and economic development at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. “Every place has had the zoning ordinances, then restrictive covenants, the practices of realtors. The standard history. What makes Milwaukee a little bit different than these other places, which explains why we’re consistently in the top five and often No. 1, in segregation? We have the lowest rate of African-American suburbanization of any of these larger cities.”

Nationwide, blacks have been concentrated in the inner city, far away from where new jobs are created. Yet the case of Milwaukee is extreme: 90 percent of the metro area’s black population lives in the city. Making matters worse, suburban whites are notably hostile to building any form of public transit to connect city people to suburban jobs, further exacerbating segregation’s ill effects.

When did business enterprise decide en masse that business should be done at their convenience rather than the customer’s convenience? I’ve been dealing with All-State insurance this past week over a claim my mother has. I’ve called various representatives at least two dozen times, from our local agent to various adjusters and the like. Not one of these people has answered the phone personally, I got voice mail or some similar dodge on ever single call that I initiated. I just tried to call two of them, both recorded voices announced that they would be in their offices from 8:00 to 4:30. If so, why didn’t they answer the friggin’ phone? I left the usual messages so they can call back when more important things have been dealt with or the alignment of the planets is right or whatever the hell it is these people use to determine when customers are worth talking to. I’ve noticed this trend with suppliers as well, I have to leave a message and they will get back to me when they feel like it. Reactionary and throwback that I am, I continue to answer my office phone in person when anyone calls it, let alone an important customer. If I am out somewhere, the call gets forwarded and I answer it unless I am driving or with another customer. Sometimes people are startled by this since they are obviously used to the mechanized brush-off. There seems to be a lot of confusion about cause and effect, customer and vendor, in the business world today. A lot of business people are utterly oblivious to the existence of competitors and the implications of such competition.

I expect that this will garner the usual sane, level-headed response from the wingnut gallery that we usually see from them:

Justices decline N.Y. case restricting guns in public

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday declined to consider whether the Second Amendment protects the right to carry a gun outside the home.

The decision lets stand a federal appeals court decision that upheld New York’s restrictions on carrying guns in public – a law similar to that in nine other states, including California.

Instead, the high court is more likely to await an appeal from Illinois to a federal appeals court ruling that struck down its more restrictive law – one that bans nearly all guns outside the home.

In the New York case, the state attorney general’s office had argued in its brief to the Supreme Court that the lower-court decision should stand. The state has a “compelling interest in public safety and crime prevention” that makes gun regulation necessary, it said.

Those challenging the New York law argued that as a result, the right to bear arms is “illusory.” Their brief to the Supreme Court contended that such a restriction hasn’t been placed on the freedom of speech, worship — or even abortion.

How about some mind exercise then?

Classic board games? Chess, Backgammon, etc. Perhaps a well made travel set?

Classic novels? Last of the Mohicans, Kidnapped, Treasure Island, LotR if they haven’t already read it, any of the Heinlein juveniles from the 1950’s, etc

History text - depending on their reading skills, Barbara Tuchmann’s books such as “The Guns of August” with the 100 year anniversary of WWI soon or the “A Distant Mirror” on the 14th Century in England and France are delightful and reasonably easy reading while still being intellectually rigorous.

I have only ever participated once in this event. I took my 3 youngest kids (who were all teenagers) to a corporate event. My 2 daughters didn’t even want to enter the building, since we were located right next door to the mall I dropped them off for the day.

My son, who was 16, brought his portfolio and spent the afternoon with the graphic design department.

Robert Stacy McCain citing Dim Hoft. Is that a case of the blind leading the stupid, or of the stupid leading the blind?

The dumb leading the dumber.

re: #147 Vicious Babushka

Those are all great suggestions. I was thinking chess set, microscope, and binocs with a bird-watching guide.

Might I suggest some more modern board games:
Qwirkle
- Mensa Select Award
- Spiel des Jahre winner
- plus many others.

It is a brilliant game, takes about 30-45 minutes to play and can play from 2-4. It is the kind of game that kids and adults can play.

Ingenious
- Mensa Selectg Award
- Spiel des Jahres nominee
- plus many others

It can be taught to people in under 2 minutes, takes about 30-45 minutes to play and pretty much anyone can play. I have taught it to 5 year old kids and 60 year old adults. It has one double sided piece of paper for the rules.

Bohnanza
- no awards

Card trading game for 2-7 players, it is loud and highly interactive as the only person that can make trades is the active player.

All of these are better games then the “Classics” like Monopoly, Careers etc.

I’ll have to check with my son what board games they already have, since they own a large collection. Thanks for the suggestion!

If we’re talking about board games, I would absolutely suggest Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Carcassonne.

No worries, I own about 650 board games, so if you are looking at board games, get some of their favourite titles and I may know something else they may like, besides, being a board game evangelist is part of my hobby…

I hate Settlers so I never suggest it.

I like the three I mentioned because the first two have incredibly accessible rules and the third one, while having more complex rules, is still pretty easy to access.

I was saving Ticket to Ride and Carc for later. ;)

Aww. I like Catan, especially the online version on XBox Live. It’s fun.

Actually, those three are ones I hadn’t heard of, so I’m looking into them myself. Heh.

Sorry to steal your thunder. :)

Interesting suggestions. I’m more into board wargames and there aren’t all that many appropriate to the age bracket involved. If they had serious interest, there’s a few good historically accurate games that are on the simpler end of the spectrum. At that age, though, a good chess set is an investment in how to think.

I’d say the biggest tip-off in his original tweet was “totally not a prop child”. Genuine wingnut would say the child was adorable and leave it at that.

I used to be involved with FallCon in Calgary, and one of my roles was working at the Comic Entertainment Expo teaching people new games.

I play some wargames (I loves me some C&C: Ancients) and I have been playing the Martin Wallace ACW games from Mayfair, Bull Run & Shiloh. These are pretty light but fun.

I am a big fan of the block stuff from Columbia & GMT as well.

It’s certainly provocative and inappropriate to carry like that in public, but the kid in the article article explicitly said the gun wasn’t loaded.

“Vikings” appears to be “Sons of Anarchy” circa 866.

I keep wondering (even tho I know differently) if the lead male character in both series is the same guy.

Katey Sagal’s acting alone is enough to make watching Sons of Anarchy worthwhile.

Any good recommendations to watch on Netflix instant streaming or on Hulu?

I need things to watch during my lunch hour at work. Anything is fine. I’ve been on a documentary kick lately, but I’m open to anything that’s entertaining.

I’ll look into History Of Film. Thanks!

I know this is a dead thread but sorry…wasn’t ignoring you. I got caught up with work stuff.

Anyway, nothing that I have found. Just seems strange that this is popping up now, first mentioned in 2008 with no proof of such letter from 2004.

There’s lots of “light” stuff that might hold their interest on the board/card game front.

If they’re competitive with each other there is stuff like “Kung Fu Fighting” (Card game emulating Hong Kong action film combat) that can be played by 2-6.

There is also a very nice spectrum of cooperative board games where the players are working together to beat the game itself on a wide variety of topics. One of the lighter (and in my opinion easier) ones is “Forbidden Island” where the topic is finding artifacts on an island before it finishes sinking. Another one called “Pandemic” just got reprinted and has a topic of the players representing health workers trying to prevent diseases from wiping out humanity.

yes, I’m on BGG too. ;)
