Right Wing Blogs’ Massive Fail: Injured Saudi Is a Witness, Not a Suspect

Right wing blogs rushed to judgment, of course
US News • Views: 25,867

Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, Jim Hoft, and practically every other right wing blogger on the Internet immediately jumped on a New York Post story that turned out to be false, claiming that a Saudi national had been taken into custody in the Boston bombings. Today the Washington Post reports that the Saudi man was injured in the blasts, and is a witness, not a suspect.

U.S. law enforcement officials said Tuesday that a Saudi national injured in the Boston Marathon bombing is regarded as a witness, not a suspect.

The Saudi, who is recuperating at a Boston hospital, is in his 20s and is in the United States on a Saudi scholarship to study at a university in the Boston area.

The federal officials’ explanation echoed comments by a Saudi official at the country’s embassy in Washington. The embassy official said that a Saudi national has been questioned as a witness but is not regarded as a suspect. The Saudi official cited information provided to the embassy by U.S. law enforcement officials.

“We’re not aware of any Saudi suspect or Saudi person of interest,” said the Saudi official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the preliminary nature of the information.

He declined to identify the young man, but said he sustained serious burn injuries. The official said the victim is cooperating with U.S. investigators and granted permission for his Boston area apartment to be searched.

“He volunteered to have it searched,” the Saudi official said. “He is fully cooperating with authorities.”

Jim Hoft, Dumbest Man on the Internet, is still at it today, showing absolutely no interest in the statements from authorities that the Saudi man is not a suspect: PHOTOS of SAUDI NATIONAL Person of Interest in Boston Custody | the Gateway Pundit.

Hopefully this gentleman will be able to shed some light on who the actual perpetrator is.

This is an epic FAIL even for Dim Jim. The photo shows a happy kid frolicking at Disneyland. WTF.

As I said downthread, this shit is going to get someone hurt one day. This is low even for Hoft to keep at it even when it’s been made fully aware that the man in question is not a suspect. Usually his shit is just silly fauxrages but this, this could get someone hurt or even killed.

Yep even when the actual perp confesses and is found guilty, you’ll have those like DimJim, Alex Jones, and Bryan Fischer just dying to find the sinister conspiracy.

I am against all speculation and frankly don’t care so much which variety of scumbag did this, only that we catch them and deal with them in a way that does not lessen us as Americans.

But is it not clear now that the same Saudi has had his apartment searched and that investigators have carried away material including a spool of wire (clearly seen in pictures)?

I think the lesson is to avoid putting your own political stencil on events and let the evidence come out, but that applies to everyone.

“I have done post-attack analyses on attacks around the world, trying to learn lessons. … The timing here, the devices themselves, the ball bearings used—you know, that’s not some kid in his garage putting something together,” Lynch said [Rep. Stephen Lynch, a Massachusetts Democrat].

Though he repeatedly said he didn’t want to get ahead of investigators, Lynch disputed speculation that the devices strongly indicated domestic, rather than international terrorism.

“I don’t think the trappings are … hokey or homegrown,” Lynch said. “Having two explosions, 11 seconds apart, that points to someone who has more competence at this and has training.”

An outstanding point.

While it’s tempting to imagine the bomber(s) could’ve been wingnuts, jihadis, Sovereign Citizens, or what have you, until someone is apprehended, it’s all guessing.

For all anyone knows, it could’ve been a ‘mad bomber’ - a psychopath who just wanted to blow some folks up for no particular reason whatsoever.

re: #30 Dr Lizardo

Sure.

Personally, I suspect that it’s a homegrown far right nutter. The bombings were on April 15th — Tax Day. They were in Boston, home of the tea party that the nutters have latched on to as a symbol. And with all the far right crazy we’ve seen in this country since Obama got elected, it wouldn’t surprise me.

Still, we don’t know anything yet. It’s ALL meaningless guesswork until law enforcement figures out what the hell happened and why and who did it.

Let me repeat that I really don’t think it matters why the person who did this thinks they did it or what cause they think they are promoting (and of course actually smearing).

Calling a suspect a witness is obviously the smartest thing to do in light of past rush to judgments and to keep the witness from becoming uncooperative. I believe the police are acting very appropriately.

Isn’t any speculation kind of using tragedy for one’s own politics?

48 Shiplord Kirel  Tue, Apr 16, 2013 10:56:22am

My ever-expanding surveillance and espionage network now has a source inside a local sporting goods outlet. The source reports an attempted run on guns and ammunition after the news from Boston broke. I say “attempted” because the store had in fact been cleaned out during earlier runs. This time, a number of the usual suspects showed up looking for any scraps of ammunition that might have been overlooked earlier. In the minds of the wingnuts, the Boston bombing is simply another false flag or lefty/Muslim outrage that can be exploited to take their guns, even though no guns were involved.

My first thought when I read a news report that a do-gooder had tackled a Saudi national and detained him until police arrive was that some innocent Saudi man was tackled for no reason. (A news report that I’m not sure was completely accurate either.)

Sadly, my 6th sense was accurate.

Late Monday night, law enforcement officials descended on an apartment building in the suburb of Revere, about five miles north of Copley Square, linked to a man the police took into custody near the scene of the bombings. But on Tuesday morning, one law enforcement official said investigators had determined that the man, who was hurt in a blast and was questioned at the hospital, was not involved in the attack.

I know for a fact that it is important for Spencer that a Muslim did this but I hold him to less of a standard.

The conclusion I lept to is that when police are taking bags out of an apartment and calling someone a witness they are calculating legally and strategically. That is to say there are good reasons (besides begin a bigot who wants this to be a Muslim) for thinking that he is in fact a suspect.

Beck: Muslims Responsible for Boston Bombing Because American Terrorists Always Target the Government

Last night, Glenn Beck went on the air shortly after the bombing at the Boston Marathon happened and even though very little was known at the time, Beck understandably felt obligated to cover it.

It was fascinating to watch the reporters who actually work for The Blaze try to do their job of reporting what is actually known while answering questions from Beck, who is under no such constraints and feels free to just randomly speculate about how this couldn’t have been carried out by an America, because Americans who do things like this always target the government, not streets filled with people [tell that to Eric Rudolph.]

Beck also speculated that we might never know the “true story” of what happened because the Obama administration is soft of Islamic terrorism and doesn’t think al Qaeda exists, so they will have to “spin this” to hide the truth if it was carried out by Islamic extremists:

TPM reports that the individual invited the police to search the apartment and has been fully cooperating.

I am not sure what I would do in his circumstance, since talking to the police when you are under suspicion can be dangerous for you even if you are as pure as the driven snow. Normally innocuous behavior can be interpreted as suspicious and damning when cast under the right light. (like running away from a bomb that just badly burned you, for instance)

Pat Buchanan Calls For ‘A New Era Of Civil Disobedience’ Against LGBT Equality

As the LGBT community continues to challenge and win discrimination — be it by florists, bed & breakfasts, or T-shirt printers — conservatives have claimed that they are victims because their religious privilege should entitle them to discriminate. These arguments have increasingly become transparent, revealing that their intent to mistreat the LGBT community supersedes what their beliefs actually require of them. This is most apparent in a new op-ed from Fox New contributor Pat Buchanan. Writing for the extremist site WorldNetDaily, Buchanan argues that the advent of LGBT equality could mean the so-called “culture wars” might have to become literal with conservatives brazenly violating the law.

Buchanan juxtaposes LGBT rights with the racial civil rights movement, openly admitting that religious leaders will have to preach “principled rejection” and encourage their congregations to disobey laws. He believes “treating black folks decently” is the Christian thing to do, but the same can not be said for the LGBT community:

Sandy Rios Likens Boston Attack to When Nero ‘Burned Rome’ and ‘Blamed Christians’

Sandy Rios on her radio show today was joined by her boss, American Family Association president Tim Wildmon, to discuss the bombing at the Boston marathon, and said the attack “reminds” her of when the Roman emperor Nero “burned Rome” and then “blamed Christians.”

“It’s that psychological process of blaming people that you hate so that they will take the blame for something and it solves two problems for you,” Rios claimed. “So this is nothing new.”

Rios accused the Obama administration of trying to stop security officials from referencing Islam while supposedly identifying conservatives, like gun owners and AFA radio listeners, as “enemies on equal footing with Islamists.”

She said that this alleged policy makes America “less safe” while Wildmon criticized the media for saying that the bombing could have been an “anti-government” attack when he thinks it was almost certainly an act of “Islamic jihadism.”

Look, you simply don’t know that the “spool of wire” belonged to the Saudi in question. You’re assuming it, and I’m telling you that there is absolutely no way that ANY investigator would carry evidence in such an important case with their bare hands. This is simply not how it is done.

Irish Catholics of a bygone age had some reeeeally fucked up notions about sex, virginity and women. I registered today because the account I used years ago was suspended for inactivity. (I left on good terms and never had too many beefs with people here)
I cam back today because I remember this place as one where reasonably informed people talked about unfolding events.

I thought from reading comments that it was really important to people here that Spencer is definitely wrong and that this is definitely not the work of a JIhadi.

I also saw a lot of people on Facebook already concluding it was a right wing nut.

Police were saying he was not a suspect even while going to his house and taking things from his apartment (his room mate confirmed this).

Thanks for chatting, and I appreciate being allied to do so even though the host and others disagree with my conclusions.

Look, you simply don’t know that the “spool of wire” belonged to the Saudi in question. You’re assuming it, and I’m telling you that there is absolutely no way that ANY investigator would carry evidence in such an important case with their bare hands. This is simply not how it is done.

The fact that you keep insisting it is perfectly normal for police to risk contaminating evidence makes your own agenda very clear.

My spouse is finishing up her degree in forensic biology. No, they would not be contaminating evidence that way.

They totally do. It amazes me how they think they can be intolerant as shit to gays, non-Christians, or really anyone who doesn’t see the world like them but the second someone says something critical of them, they act like they’re the Jews in Nazi Germany and Occupied Europe. Was doing my weekly reading of the NYT Book Review and Dan Savage, the gay/atheist columnist was talking about how his son has said some harsh things about Christians around him before. Savage is very well known for being critical of religion but he even pointed out that he had to remind his son of people like MLK and the boy’s own grandmother who was a devout Christians. You never ever see AFA like minded people doing that with homosexuals.

You’re making generalizations about comments, never a good sign. You obviously know that commenters here are aware that Spencer is frequently wrong. I don’t see where that fact is ‘important to people here’. And I don’t see anyone making any claims about who did the bombing, Jihadi or otherwise.

If that is cat 6 cable (which it does look like), it was almost certainly used by the investigators to connect their own equipment. There’s no way this is “evidence.” Investigators do not handle evidence like that with their bare hands.

It was mentioned numerous times last night that there was no chatter at all in the foreign Jihadi sites in the days leading up to the attack. Exactly. My spouse had to do a simulated forensic dig of a shallow grave last winter while being being examined by North Carolina Bureau of Investigation agents. re: #99 sugikoi

I looked at your site because I remember years ago it was good for live unfolding commentary and yes, it seems to me that it is important for you that Robert Spencer is wrong.

I hope the Saudi kid is cleared. I don;t care which variety of freak did this.

So, I’m kind of curious what the authorities would need to say for you to consider the kid cleared. Because apparently saying he is not a suspect (even after searching his apartment with his cooperation) and calling him a witness (which, umm, he did witness it if he was injured in the blast) is insufficient.

He’s not threatened. He’s jealous. I doubt the man can even buy a date.

The hardcore right, especially those with anti-Muslim inclinations, are no different than those who believed in the various tropes of anti-Semitism one hundred years ago. No logic can penetrate their worldview. There is no ‘nuance’ for them; no shades of gray.

They adhere to a strictly Manichean view of life and the world at large, absolute good and absolute evil. There is nothing else for them; they simply haven’t the intellectual capacity to handle anything else.

It’s actually downright eerie how the Anti-Semitic CTs of a 100 years ago resemble the Anti-Muslim ones of today. I don’t think it’s a consequence since the people who echo them are the ideological descendants of the people who insisted the Protocols of Elders of Zion were real. Barton: Instead of Passing Obamacare, Congress Should Have Called on People ‘to be More Religious’

… Barton commented that the problem in America today is that while the vast majority of people consider themselves to be Christians, not enough are reading the Bible regularly and applying it to their daily lives.

After comparing the Bible to an owner’s manual for a car, Barton said that “the more religious you are, the better your health is” and suggested that instead of passing health care reform legislation, Congress should have passed legislation “calling on people to be more religious”

Two White House Petitions Related To The Boston Marathon Bombing Have Been Created

A petition to the ban the crazy people at the Westboro Baptist Church from picketing the funerals of the victims of the Boston Marathon has already 7,640 signatures. The WBC has announced they intend to picket the funerals whenever and wherever they happen.

Another petition calls for the the Presidential Citizens Medal to be awarded to Carlos Arredondo for “exemplary deeds at the Boston Marathon.”

There’s a group of people in any society that needs someone to hate. Without hate, their lives are meaningless, shallow and empty. Hate defines them. Hate makes them feel productive. Hate fills the void in their hearts. In any society, in any era of history, in any culture you will find such people. It has nothing to do with religion, or politics, or race or ethnicity or anything else.

it’s just the voracious need to hate someone else in order to make them feel better about themselves.

“Dawn Hochsprung” was the Sandy Hook principal killed in the massacre.

Donna Page” was the previous principal, who retired in 2010 and came out of retirement after the massacre to act as interim principal.

So I’m thinking what happened is that some news report mentioned Donna Page was at the Marathon (as were a number of Sandy Hook folks) but ran a stock image of Dawn Hochsprung (in fact, the very same image in the older news image the tweeting twit posted) and the moran couldn’t figure out the difference.
