Meh. I’m waiting for the next “Lost in Space” movie.

And I am waiting for Honor Harrington.

“Star Trek Into Darkness” does look truly epic. I was quite pleased with Abrams’ “Star Trek”. Looks like they’re shooting the works on this one.

Piffle. Lost in Space? Honor “kill as many of my crew as possible while I manage to survive” Harrington?

Thanks, but I’ll stick to the Great Bird of the Galaxy’s Utopian fantasy.

I’ll actually pay to see this. Willingly pay.

I think that really started with Deep Space 9, though it tended to devolve into chronic overacting.

Hmmm…….

26 Whack-A-Mole  Tue, Apr 16, 2013 5:56:40pm

I’m so torn by these movies. No doubt about it, they’re great for the Hollywood blockbuster fare that they are (and a good sight better than any of the TNG movies) but they deviate so far from the original Trek ethos that it’s hard to think of them as “Star Trek”.

Even DS9, the most action oriented of the original series (and my personal favorite), was far more introspective and thought provoking than these.

It’s debatable about what the original Trek ethos really is. The original series had two pilot episodes, the first labeled as too “cerebral” for the average TV viewer. And it’s generally agreed by fans that Next Generation didn’t really take off until after the second season, when Gene got relegated to the exec producer’s chair and others took the series away from the “bright and shining future” motif.

Good…..at least I’m not losing my marbles.

The problem with anything that tries to reboot the original series (Enterprise included) is that the technology we have now is so much more advanced that it creates an odd feeling of anachronism compared to the original episodes.

Next Gen was unwatchable until about the 3rd season, though as it seemed like they were just remaking episodes of the original with better special effects for the longest time.

I really liked the way they handled it, to make it canon but not disrupt earlier canon, personally. That does let them explore a different view of things. I’d love to see a TV series based on the new universe with the actors because that would be fascinating but I suspect many of the actors involved wouldn’t necessarily be up for that kind of commitment.

That’s true. But the design of the bigger ship the USS Enterprise is facing in the trailer certainly looks like something out of the Next Generation era, which is set about 100 years ahead of TOS.

I was a huge fan of the original Star Trek, but I never got into TNG. I really wanted to like it, but it just never grabbed my attention.

This new film looks amazing, though. Let’s hope we didn’t just see all the best scenes.

See, I grew up with TNG, so that’s all I’ve really known of Trek. Yet, at the same time, the first Trek film I remember seeing in theater was ST VI. Good times.

Spoiler:

At the end of the movie, it fades to black… then suddenly we close-up on the suddenly-opening eye of CMDR DATA, who is mimicking stretching and smacking his lips, having just “woken up” from a dream program.

He taps his communicator.

“Data to La Forge,” he says, a hint of excitement in his voice.

“How was your dream, Data?” comes the reply.

“Most exhilarating. Although…” he trails off.

“Yes, Data? What is it?”

“There were no electric sheep at all.”

Harve Bennett, a director and producer of Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan, is a distant relative on my husband’s side. He attended a big family celebration and our four year old son (at the time) was thrilled that someone having anything to do with Star Trek was in attendance. After a bout of long and boring toasts, our son ran up and asked if he could make a toast. With the mic in hand, he made the appropriate gesture and intoned, “Live long and prosper!”

What can I say, the kid knows how to make a toast, short and sweet!

Machete Order to the rescue.

Next time you want to introduce someone to Star Wars for the first time, watch the films with them in this order: IV, V, II, III, VI

Notice something? Yeah, Episode I is gone.

Episode I is a failure on every possible level. The acting, writing, directing, and special effects are all atrocious, and the movie is just plain boring. Luckily, George Lucas has done everyone a favor by making the content of Episode I completely irrelevant to the rest of the series. Seriously, think about it for a minute. Name as many things as you can that happen in Episode I and actually help flesh out the story in any subsequent episode. I can only think of one thing, which I’ll mention later.

Every character established in Episode I is either killed or removed before it ends, unimportant, or established better in a later episode. Does it ever matter that Palpatine had an apprentice before Count Dooku? Nope, Darth Maul is killed by the end of Episode I and never referenced again. You may as well just start with the assumption that Dooku was the only apprentice. Does it ever matter that Obi-Wan was being trained by Qui-Gon? Nope, Obi-Wan is well into training Anakin at the start of Episode II, Qui-Gon is completely irrelevant.

Search your feelings, you know it to be true! Episode I doesn’t matter at all. You can start the prequels with Episode II and miss absolutely nothing.

To me, Sisko was the last good captain before New Kirk.

Definitely.

I was a huge fan of the original Star Trek, but I never got into TNG. I really wanted to like it, but it just never grabbed my attention.

This new film looks amazing, though. Let’s hope we didn’t just see all the best scenes.

Dare I admit? I have all TNG on VHS. I love Data.

The office is empty so I can actually play music now! And that is awesome. Time to see if Amazon has it.

Everyone else lives within biking or reasonable driving distance. Versus my hour-long-in-rush-hour commute. It needs to be 7pm already…

My main takeaway from TNG was a crush on Wesley.

I was 4.

Wil Wheaton is cool as anything though.

Love him. I’ve played poker with him. (I used to be a serious poker player.)

Eech. I always hated long commutes.

Nowadays, I can walk to work, which is nice. Or telecommute. Which is even nicer.

Star Trek is the same way. I only rewatch the even numbered movies, until the reboot anyway.

Call me crazy, but I liked The Search for Spock and Generations. I could do without most of The Motionless Picture, though I still think the drydock scene one of the best in Trek history. Insurrection wasn’t terrible, but it tried to be too much like IV and failed. And V and Nemesis…never happened. I refuse to acknowledge their existence.

I moved in with my now-husband into the house he owns, and it seemed silly to sell just to get an apartment closer for more money for less space and fewer cats allowed. But the commute has sucked donkeyballs.

Fortunately, I have been able to work from home at least one day a week pretty reliably, unless it was crunch time in lab, and at this point I’m coming in roughly one day a week as I finish up paperwork.

Hoping to submit my dissertation to the system by the end of April - official signatures went in today, so it’s just uploading that and permission letters and my advisor signing off that I haven’t pulled a bait and switch.

Both Voyager and Enterprise had pretty good premises and Janeway and Archer had their moments, but Berman and Braga couldn’t help themselves from screwing both pooches.

At least Manny Coto was made the showrunner for the last season of Enterprise, so it wasn’t a total waste.

Rick Berman, as producer and co-writer, had his grubby little hands in the mix; it’s not like Logan, nor Spiner (who also helped write the story), could tell their boss to “fuck off” and still work on the movie.

Enterprise actually did start to get good in its last season. But that’s because Manny Coto took over and brought a fan’s prospective to the series. He managed to salvage something of the series, though it’s too bad that by then the series was doomed to cancellation.

Not that that script ever really had a chance, since Baird had absolutely no familiarity with the Trek-verse and saw his job in directing the film to be one of making something that “stood on its own,” by which he meant a generic action film.

Voyager had a fabulous premise about the nut and bolts of building a Federation type utopia when you’re stripped of the social support system that makes it possible, but they pretty much ignored te strength of the premise and waved all the interesting stuff away.

I agree. Watchmen is unlike anything else.

I showed it to a couple of former students of mine, both of whom had never heard of it. They’re both into action films, and they were utterly blown away by “Watchmen”.

I had to explain the alternate history of the film, simply to avoid any confusion on their part - they’d never read the original comic.

I don’t know if they’d do a follow-up to “Watchmen”; in a lot of ways it’s a one-off.

The casting all around was perfect - especially Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach. He played the role perfectly. Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Edward Blake/The Comedian was pitch perfect, and Billy Crudup’s Dr. Manhattan was spot-on. I was genuinely impressed.

And with that, good night, Lizards.
