Bam!

Short, sweet, and to the point.

Amen to that! This is the first blog I ever read (after Charles was on Drudge Radio talking about Reuters photo doctoring) and knowing that this is a wholly independent operation makes me smile because Charles and the Lizards won’t be compromised by anything. Charles and the Lizards will say what they want and intelligently debate what’s been said. This has been going on here since I started reading LGF in 2004.

Keep up the good work, Charles!

Keep up the good fight, Charles. I’m a proud Lizard, and you run the best damn site on the interwebs. Cheers, Lizards!!!

Countering a flurry of reports that suggested there were multiple unexploded devices scattered throughout Boston, NBC’s Pete Williams reported Tuesday morning on MSNBC that a senior law enforcement official said the only explosive devices in the city were the two that erupted near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Williams said a number of bystanders dropped what they were carrying and ran after the deadly explosions, leaving scores of unattended packages throughout the city. Several of those packages were detonated by authorities, according to Williams, but there is no indication that they were unexploded devices.

Williams noted that it is somewhat disappointing for investigators that there were no unexploded devices, which might have represented an “investigative gold mine.”

Becoming more plausible that this could have been the work of just one person. Breivik’s assumption, and it seems fairly reasonable, was that someone not on a watch list had a 30% chance of being apprehended before a bombing plot was completed, but that the risk rose to 90 to 95% by the time 5 people were involved.

That’s another thing about Anders Breivik that makes one hate him all the more: The extent to which he correctly calculated things out. Law enforcement and informed media people are going to be studying those calculations for years, giving the shithead a recognition I’d very much rather he not receive.

Dirtbag Summit:

In an interview with former Illinois Republican Congressman Joe Walsh, Ted Nugent called for civil disobedience among Illinois gun owners. “It’s time for a Rosa Parks from ‘We the People.’” Nugent said. “The law forbidding that black lady from sitting on that bus — her choice of seat — she had to at some point go, ‘I’ve had it. The law is evil. The law is against human rights.’ The Illinois gun laws are against the instincts and the rules of humanity. It must be changed as quickly as possible.”

Joe Walsh took it even one step further and stated that Illinois residents should ignore the current laws and carry concealed anyway. “I don’t care if we don’t have a conceal carry law right now,” said Walsh on his talk show. “There isn’t a law abiding citizen in this city that doesn’t have the right to protect themselves… and if that means breaking the law to do it, we’re going to do it.”

The Rosa Parks line is especially bad. Carrying a gun illegally is no game, and someone charged with doing so will face a far worse punishment than what Rosa Parks faced. Nor can concealed carry be likened to the civil rights movement in a real way. I think CCW appropriate, but its not being allowed is not like being forced to move to the back of a bus simply because of your skin color.

Doing genealogy… and wondering why so many people give their children the same name as everybody else. Today we’d say parents are just being trendy, but 200 years ago, when literacy was still scarce in certain parts of this country, maybe it was because the parents only knew a few names?

Anyway, it makes sifting through old documents (like pre-1850 censuses) a pain.

31 Gus  Tue, Apr 16, 2013 9:05:02pm
32 freetoken  Tue, Apr 16, 2013 9:06:58pm

Suggestion for expecting parents out there: whatever you do, don’t give you child the same name as all your friends and neighbors are doing to their issue. Also, don’t reuse your parents name unless you can spell it differently or give a middle name that is so different no one will ever confuse the two.

These reprehensible jackasses like Ted Nugent and the usual gang of idiots make it extremely difficult to advocate a ‘pro-2nd Amendment’ point of view. The loudest voices seem invariably to be the most stupid and beligerent, and somehow they end up becoming the public face of gun owners. They do more harm to their own pet cause than their opposition could ever hope to do.

The stupid and belligerent often are the one’s monomaniacal enough to keep shouting the same thing, even if it doesn’t make sense. That is what gets them their platform, in part because a smarter person’s “It’s more complicated than that…” doesn’t play well on TV.

The gvt may have the bullets, but we have the guns.

I predict that in any armed conflict between the gvt and the Patriots, the Patriots will win, providing the military does not get involved. If the military does get involved, we’ll still win but it will take much longer and be much bloodier.

Buy more ammo.

And another side post in the same thread

Now is as good as time as any to bring the subject of SWAT team tactics up with your mayors and town councilors. Grab a friend, make an appointment and go do it.

IMO, it should be common knowledge where our city, state and federal officials live. Yes, the county bureaucrats, the local, state and federal police officers, every single one of them. Let’s remove the cloak of anonymity from these public officials! They work for us, remember?

It is not difficult to make someone live in fear for their lives as many of you already know. Making our elected local, county, state or federal officials acutely aware of that feeling is not a popular idea but I assure you after once having that taste in your mouth, it is not one quickly forgotten. Why should we be the ones who fear them if we are not criminals? Don’t go after them in their protected offices when their homes and families are as vulnerable as ours are.

If our LEO’s or military troops under the orders of our elected officials ever administer violence to US citizens then I believe it should be returned in equal force to their superiors families.

I promise you that a single bullet through the kitchen window of the Mayors house will make for an excited dinner conversation with his wife that evening. The Mayor will then understand exactly what he did when he ordered violence against his townspeople.

The Chief of Police’s wife wouldn’t hesitate to explain in detail to her husband what a wonderful job he’s doing if her home were to receive a copper jacketed message through the front door.

So sad for the sadists:

The report rejected the contention that torture resulted from of a “few bad apples,” as Bush said following the release of sickening photos showing American soldiers abusing prisoners at Abu Ghraib in Iraq. The authors cited two decisions as key to this conclusion: Bush’s declaration that the Geneva Conventions did not apply to detainees in Afghanistan and the Guantanamo Bay detention center, and his authorization to allow the CIA to use brutal techniques against some detainees. The report also cited comments by Vice President Dick Cheney that the U.S. must work on “the dark side” and other similar comments leading to the perception that such practices would be tolerated.

The investigation concluded further that there was no evidence that torture produced any significant information, much of the information provided was unreliable, and it did not lead to the capture Osama Bin Laden.

Well, yes. I was counting SWAT raids, actually, since IIRC those are local government most of the time.

I always laugh at these “patriots” thinking they have a chance in an armed insurrection against a country that spends as much as we do on defense. Really? You think your single AR-15 stands a chance? Pfft.

Wrestling with genealogical records… and noticing that those very same parts of the country in which records were not kept, or were partly kept, and which did not require counties to keep track of vitals… seem to also be prone to lots of inbreeding (first cousin marriage.)

A coincidence - not.

Pat Robertson On Boston Explosions: ‘Don’t Talk To Me About Religion Of Peace’

Televangelist Pat Robertson has linked religion to the Boston Marathon bombings, although he did not specifically mention any one religion.

On Tuesday morning’s episode of the Christian Broadcast Network’s “The 700 Club,” the 83-year-old evangelical Christian began discussing the tragic events that unfolded at Copley Square Monday afternoon, Media Matters for America notes.

“Our hearts go out to these people who were wounded and injured,” he began, adding that it all started as a “joyous” occasion. “[T]o think that somebody would be so vicious, so evil as to want to kill little children, and maim families who were there rejoicing in a sporting contest on a beautiful day in Boston, it just makes you sick at your stomach. Don’t talk to me about religion of peace, no way.”

Just for context:

Last summer, the American Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the sale of Buckyballs, powerful little “rare earth” magnets sold as toys and desktop accessories.

This is America, 2013:

Texas lawmaker: Colleges shouldn’t discriminate against creationism research

A Texas lawmaker wants to make the state’s colleges and universities safe for creationism.

Zedler.
State Rep. Bill Zedler, from Arlington, has filed legislation (HB 285) that would prohibit discrimination by colleges and universities against faculty members and students who want to conduct research relating to intelligent design.

Here’s the principal text from the legislation:

No institution of higher education may discriminate against or penalize in any manner, especially with regard to employment or academic support, a faculty member or student based on the faculty member’s or student’s conduct of research relating to the theory of intelligent design or other alternate theories of the origination and development of organisms.

[…]

Nasty academics, discriminating against creationism.

I said, “Holy crap, what is that?” She said she was preparing some food in the pressure cooker, when her husband saw the regulator on top shaking away. He said “what’s this little shaking thing?” AND HE REMOVED THE REGULATOR.

How Much Unemployment Was Caused by Reinhart and Rogoff’s Arithmetic Mistake?

That’s the question millions will be asking when they see the new paper by my friends at the University of Massachusetts, Thomas Herndon, Michael Ash, and Robert Pollin. Herndon, Ash, and Pollin (HAP) corrected the spreadsheets of Carmen Reinhart and Ken Rogoff. They show the correct numbers tell a very different story about the relationship between debt and GDP growth than the one that Reinhart and Rogoff have been hawking.

Just to remind folks, Reinhart and Rogoff (R&R) are the authors of the widely acclaimed book on the history of financial crises, This Time is Different. They have also done several papers derived from this research, the main conclusion of which is that high ratios of debt to GDP lead to a long periods of slow growth. Their story line is that 90 percent is a cutoff line, with countries with debt-to-GDP ratios above this level seeing markedly slower growth than countries that have debt-to-GDP ratios below this level. The moral is to make sure the debt-to-GDP ratio does not get above 90 percent.

There are all sorts of good reasons for questioning this logic. First, there is good reason for believing causation goes the other way. Countries are likely to have high debt-to-GDP ratios because they are having serious economic problems.

Claire McCaskill: Police Have Suspect In Ricin Mailing

Police have a suspect in mind as they investigate a letter mailed to Sen. Roger Wicker that tested positive for poisonous ricin, a Senate colleague said.

“The person that is a suspect writes a lot of letters to members,” Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said Tuesday as she emerged from a classified briefing.

Authorities declined to comment on a suspect or any other aspect of the investigation being led by Capitol Police and the FBI after tests indicated that a letter mailed to the Mississippi Republican’s Washington office contained the potentially deadly toxin. The letter was intercepted at a Senate mail facility in Prince George’s County, Md., just outside Washington, said Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, a member of the Senate’s Democratic leadership.

Back in the early 2000s I was thoroughly sick of the shaky cam fad (from 80s commercials to shows like NYPD Blue to shitty 90s Dogma to Bourne movies) so it took me extra long to discover The Office (the original) was actually worth seeing because the nightmare that was the first season photography of Arrested Development had me reaching for the Dramamine and swearing off any production that couldn’t be bothered to invest in a camera mount.

Good morning, everyone.

I hate to start off the day with this, but apparently AQ is just as puzzled as the FBI, however being the twisted assholes that they are they’re hoping the bomb making instructions they recently published in their “Inspire” magazine actually did inspire someone to do something evil:

FBI and al Qaeda both “struggling” to identify culprit behind Boston Marathon bombing

[…] The video is being reference [sic] often by jihadists in light of the Boston bombings, with many expressing hope that someone buying into the al Qaeda philosophy was behind the attack.

“Even if this was the work of a ‘lone wolf’, a claim by al Qaeda would probably have a big impact on the U.S., and most importantly, would encourage others to follow suit,” urges one online jihadist.

But CBS News’ analysis of prominent, credible jihadist web portals shows they are grappling for answers just as the FBI investigators are. Most recent terror attacks have been claimed by jihadist groups within about three days.

“The investigators are struggling with that question,” explains Miller, “as al Qaeda, on the other side of the world, is wondering ‘was that us?’”

Miller says it could turn out that the Boston attack represents “the maturation” of al Qaeda’s relatively new lone wolf ideology. It’s possible, says Miller, that having put out the call for “lone wolves” to strike, “they’ve done it, and they just don’t know how to claim responsibility.”

Miller notes, however, that this remains just one theory to explain the attack on the marathon. The investigation is still “wide open,” he says, stressing that pressure cooker bombs are, “easy to make if you know what you’re doing,” and citing many previous incidents — some long before the advent of al Qaeda — of such bombs being used in attacks carried out by domestic or non-jihadist groups.

Okay, gotta get back to work…

THE SAUDI MARATHON MAN

A twenty-year-old man who had been watching the Boston Marathon had his body torn into by the force of a bomb. He wasn’t alone; a hundred and seventy-six people were injured and three were killed. But he was the only one who, while in the hospital being treated for his wounds, had his apartment searched in “a startling show of force,” as his fellow-tenants described it to the Boston Herald, with a “phalanx” of officers and agents and two K9 units. He was the one whose belongings were carried out in paper bags as his neighbors watched; whose roommate, also a student, was questioned for five hours (“I was scared”) before coming out to say that he didn’t think his friend was someone who’d plant a bomb—that he was a nice guy who liked sports. “Let me go to school, dude,” the roommate said later in the day, covering his face with his hands and almost crying, as a Fox News producer followed him and asked him, again and again, if he was sure he hadn’t been living with a killer.

Why the search, the interrogation, the dogs, the bomb squad, and the injured man’s name tweeted out, attached to the word “suspect”? After the bombs went off, people were running in every direction—so was the young man. Many, like him, were hurt badly; many of them were saved by the unflinching kindness of strangers, who carried them or stopped the bleeding with their own hands and improvised tourniquets. “Exhausted runners who kept running to the nearest hospital to give blood,” President Obama said. “They helped one another, consoled one another,” Carmen Ortiz, the U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, said. In the midst of that, according to a CBS News report, a bystander saw the young man running, badly hurt, rushed to him, and then “tackled” him, bringing him down. People thought he looked suspicious.

Wife of Ex-Judge Arrested in Slain Texas DA Case

North Texas authorities have arrested the wife of a former justice of the peace who was charged with making a terroristic threat in connection with the shooting deaths of a district attorney and his wife.

Kim Lene Williams was arrested early Wednesday. Online jail records do not list charges against her and efforts to reach Kaufman County Sheriff David Byrnes, county Judge Bruce Wood and others were not successful.

A law enforcement official has said authorities are trying to build a case against her husband, Eric Lyle Williams, in the deaths of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, whose bodies were found at their home March 30.

A probable cause affidavit says Eric Williams sent an email, one day after the McLellands’ bodies were discovered, implying there would be another attack if authorities didn’t respond to various demands. The email was sent from Eric Williams’ personal computer. Authorities arrested him on Saturday and charged him with making a terroristic threat.

He was being held on $3 million bond on that charge.

Uh oh. A union doesn’t support Obamacare anymore.

Roofers’ Union Seeks Repeal/Reform Of Affordable Care Act

WASHINGTON, April 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers International President Kinsey M. Robinson issued the following statement today calling for a repeal or complete reform of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act (ACA):

“Our Union and its members have supported President Obama and his Administration for both of his terms in office.

But regrettably, our concerns over certain provisions in the ACA have not been addressed, or in some instances, totally ignored. In the rush to achieve its passage, many of the Act’s provisions were not fully conceived, resulting in unintended consequences that are inconsistent with the promise that those who were satisfied with their employer sponsored coverage could keep it.

These provisions jeopardize our multi-employer health plans, have the potential to cause a loss of work for our members, create an unfair bidding advantage for those contractors who do not provide health coverage to their workers, and in the worst case, may cause our members and their families to lose the benefits they currently enjoy as participants in multi-employer health plans.

For decades, our multi-employer health and welfare plans have provided the necessary medical coverage for our members and their families to protect them in times of illness and medical needs. This collaboration between labor and management has been a model of success that should be emulated rather than ignored. I refuse to remain silent, or idly watch as the ACA destroys those protections.

I am therefore calling for repeal or complete reform of the Affordable Care Act to protect our employers, our industry, and our most important asset: our members and their families.”

The United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers, based in Washington, D.C., has 22,000 members participating in 9 regional district councils across the United States

Officials: 2nd letter to Senate tested for ricin

WASHINGTON • Law enforcement officials say a second letter sent to the U.S. Senate has been intercepted and is being tested for poisonous ricin.

Two officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the letter was being treated in the same manner as a separate one sent to Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker and was undergoing field tests.

…It was not immediately clear which senator the second letter was addressed to.

Isn’t Walid Shoebat a BFF of Pamela Geller?

I dunno. It seems like Shoebat specializes in working audiences of socially-conservative Christians, which means he overlaps somewhat with Gaffney, Geller, et al. But I don’t know if he’s ever cited her or name-dropped her. And Pam I don’t follow beyond what turns up here or a few other sites.

Harb tribe

Harb (Arabic: حرب‎) is a large Sunni Tribe in the Arabian peninsula. There is no official tribe population count but it is estimated to be approximately four million in Saudi Arabia. It is originally a Qahtani tribe. Several authentic sources on Arab tribes genealogy state that the great-grandfather of Harb tribe is Harb ibn Saad ibn Saad ibn Khawlan ibn Amr ibn Qadha’ah ibn Himyar ibn Qahtan. Harb tribal lands extend from the Red Sea coast in Tihamah (Western Part of Saudi Arabia) to the heart of Najd in the central region of Saudi Arabia, and from North the Harbi lands extend from Madinah (a holy city for Muslims) to Al Qunfudhah in the south. The tribe’s reach extends to other countries like Kuwait, Iraq, Egypt and UAE .

Just wait till someone tells them that harbi means warlike, belligerent, military, etc.

Barth’s Notes: Pamela Geller Abuses Anyone who Doesn’t Know Whether Boston Attack was “Jihad”

Etc. Geller’s confidence is based in part on an NY Post report that a Saudi national had been “detained” as a suspect, although details are currently uncertain. However, it also fits a pattern which again leads me to believe that Geller’s real target is not just Islam, but reasonable discourse and behaviour.

Of course the attack may well turn out to have been the work of Islamic extremists, but there are also other possibilities. Geller – and her close associate Robert Spencer – don’t wish merely to whip up hatred; they also wish to stigmatise the process of thinking about things reasonably.

If Islamic extremists are in due course shown to have been the attackers, Geller will present herself as someone who was willing to name the enemy while others were either weak and vacillating or attempting to suppress the truth; should she turn out to be in the wrong, she will either sniff and move on or delete anything that makes her look foolish (she took the latter course after denouncing the media for failing to expose Obama for supposedly wearing a Muslim ring).

Emphasis mine.

Apparently she’s latched on to the NYP report and already has articles up spinning rumor into concrete, damning facts.

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said members were briefed that the substance had been found in a letter and that a suspect has been identified.

McCaskill said the letter came from an individual who frequently writes to lawmakers. She wouldn’t identify the person but confirmed officials were investigating someone.

McCaskill said state offices have been told what to look for if there are more letters containing the toxic substance.

Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant, in this field as in all others. His culture is based on “I am not too sure.” -H.L. Mencken, writer, editor, and critic (1880-1956)

*SIGH* People seriously need to move beyond the knee-jerk terrorist = Arab-looking thing. Let’s say it was a jihadi—he could’ve been white, black, hispanic, asian, or anything in between, and that type of thinking would’ve allowed him to walk (or in this case run) away without anyone giving him a second glance.

If he was from Bosnia he could easily be blond and blue eyed.

It also means this (from Wikipedia):

Yes, as I said it refers to war, though not specifically with the West (although it may have during later Ottoman times, as the Wiki entry asserts).

I think the definition over at the Oxford Islamic Studies website, which the Wiki entry cites as a source, is much clearer and more in line with my understanding of the term. Emphasis mine:

Dar al-Harb

Territory of war. Denotes the territories bordering on dar al-Islam (territory of Islam), whose leaders are called upon to convert to Islam. Refers to territory that does not have a treaty of nonaggression or peace with Muslims; those that do are called dar al-ahd or dar al-sulh. Jurists trace the concept to Muhammad , whose messages to the Persian, Abyssinian, and Byzantine emperors demanded that they choose between conversion and war. When the leaders of dar al-harb accept Islam, the territory becomes part of dar al-Islam, where Islamic law prevails; conversely, according to the majority of jurists an Islamic territory taken by non-Muslims becomes dar al-harb when Islamic law is replaced. Like other classical legal concepts, dar al-harb has been affected by historical changes, and with the fragmentation of the Muslim world into numerous states, the concept has little significance today.
