Officials: Arrest Made in Ricin Letter Investigation

A kook in Tupelo
US News • Views: 30,392

CNN is reporting, and it’s backed up by official sources on the record so you can believe it this time, that an arrest has been made in Tupelo, Mississippi in the ricin letter case.

(CNN) — An arrest has been made in connection with letters sent to President Barack Obama and Sen. Roger Wicker that authorities are testing to determine if they contain ricin, two federal law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

The person was arrested in the Tupelo, Mississippi, area, one of the officials said.

UPDATE at 4/17/13 5:20:32 pm

NBC News reports that the ricin letters were completely unrelated to the Boston bombings. The timing appears to be pure coincidence.

UPDATE at 4/17/13 5:35:18 pm

The suspect’s full name is Paul Kevin Curtis:

Why do these crackpots always surface when a ‘terror incident’ happens? Bomb threats, mailing shit to government officials, etc all seem to bump up in frequency on the heals of an attack.

The suspect has been identified: Kenneth Curtis of Tupelo Arrested in Connection With Ricin Letters.

Federal sources have confirmed to The Clarion-Ledger that Kenneth Curtis of Tupelo has been arrested in connection with letters laced with ricin that were sent to Sen. Roger Wicker and President Barack Obama.

Federal authorities were in Tupelo on Wednesday investigating the letters. Both letters were signed: “I am KC and I approve this message.”

They are hateful bigots who want to lash out and get attention. And this Ken Curtis is getting attention. And I anticipate him getting at least 20 years in prison, too.

The story says the letters were postmarked April 8, so this guy is Terrorist #1 this cycle.

9 BryanS  Wed, Apr 17, 2013 5:11:00pm

Well, if the letters were sent a week ago, this Curtis freak must have just lucked out that a real terrorist attack had the media primed to freak all out about some boiled beans (reported as ‘non-weaponized’) getting sent in the mail .

It is also possible that the tests returned false positives (it happens) and he has the misfortune to have his derpitude coincide with an actual terrorist event.

True, but that’ll just make things worse when it comes to conspiracism. A genuinely coincidental pairing of terrorist attacks may cause more people that normal to believe to conspiracy theory built up around them, this being so because those people distrust official pronouncements of “coincidence” or “a lone gunman”.

An envelope with ricin mailed to the President and a senator? With or without Boston, it would have been a lead story.,,ESPECIALLY with an arrest so fast

Would have been lost in all the talk about the gun control bill, except perhaps being noted by some bloggers and pundits as a possible example of just how all the talk about gun control had stirred up some powerful emotions.

KC’s been a busy little bastard.

Lee County Justice Court Judge Sadie Holland received letter similar to Wicker, Obama

Lee County Justice Court Judge Sadie Holland received a letter containing a suspicious substance that is thought to be linked to letters sent to Sen. Roger Wicker and President Barack Obama.

Holland, 80, said the envelope had a grainy type substance in it that resembled sand. The letter was sent to her office.

Holland said she received the letter on April 10. It was printed out and included a death threat.

“It just said something to the effect, ‘I tried to talk to you and you would not listen. Now it is time that someone must die,’” Holland said.

The letter signed off with, “I am KC and I approve this message.” The FBI has said that phrase was also included in the two letters to Wicker and Obama.

She said that one of her clerks contacted the sheriff’s department. The sheriff’s department said they would be right over and for no one to handle the letter anymore.

“I had opened the envelope,” she said.

Holland is the mother of state Rep. Steve Holland, D-Plantersville.

35 Charles Johnson  Wed, Apr 17, 2013 5:33:40pm

I seriously doubt that this ricin (if it wasn’t a false positive) was in a form that could have hurt anyone. This guy sounds like he’s a few shingles shy of a roof - he signed the letters with his real initials. There were probably lots of other clues too.

Making simple ricin from castor beans is not really that difficult. But making ricin that would disperse into the air in a way that would ensure a large quantity being inhaled is extremely difficult. I believe the US experimented with this but actually gave up because it wasn’t working.

The simple version is still a very deadly poison, if someone were to eat it, or be injected with it, so you can’t just dismiss it. But unless it’s taken into the body in some way, it’s relatively non-dangerous.

I sent letters to State Representative Roger Wicker, Senator Trent Lott and Thad Cochran. I never heard a word from anyone. I even ran into Roger Wicker several different times while performing at special banquets and fundraisers in northeast, Mississippi but he seemed very nervous while speaking with me and would make a fast exit to the door when I engaged in conversation leading up to my case against NMMC…
…I personally sent out more than a million emails in one year detailing what happened to me when I found the body parts at NMMC. .

So apparently he’s been writing to Wicker and others for some time.

He was involved in a whistleblowing issue with a med facility and its refrigerator. That became his ‘novel’ at some point.

And did you read any of the first couple chapters of that novel he posted on his blog? 2 out of 3 sentences start with “Keith did this” or “Keith felt that”. I imagine he feels it’s a conspiracy that no one will publish it.

Maybe that’s because when 90% of the country wants something reasonable (that exists in virtually every other developed nation) then the President should be pissed at how dysfunctional our govt is when such a measure won’t pass.

Moreover, the “presidential thing to do” immediately post-Boston is to show sympathy, not rage. Americans want someone calm and steady in a crisis, not a foaming at the mouth windbag like Trump.

This is money right here:

I watch TV and read the papers like everyone else. We know what we’re going to hear: vague platitudes like “tough vote” and “complicated issue.” I was elected six times to represent southern Arizona, in the State Legislature and then in Congress. I know what a complicated issue is; I know what it feels like to take a tough vote. This was neither. These senators made their decision based on political fear and on cold calculations about the money of special interests like the National Rifle Association, which in the last election cycle spent around $25 million on contributions, lobbying and outside spending.

The Clarion-Ledger finally gets the name right: Who Is Paul Kevin Curtis? | the Clarion-Ledger | clarionledger.com

Who is Paul Kevin Curtis, the Mississippi man the FBI arrested Wednesday in connection to letters with traces of ricin sent to President Barack Obama and Sen. Roger Wicker?

Curtis, a Corinth resident, might be better known to some as a celebrity impersonator.

According to GigSalad.com, a website dedicated to booking live entertainers, Curtis does impersonations of “70 of the biggest names in music history,” including Elvis, Johnny Cash, Prince, Bon Jovi and Kenny Chesney.

On the website, Curtis goes by the stage name “KC,” which was used in the letters sent to Obama and Wicker and to Lee County Justice Court Judge Sadie Holland.

“I am KC and I approve this message,” the letters read.

I am glad they caught this one quick. And I note the ironic coincidence: 9/11 was immediately followed by the Anthrax plots (unrelated), and here, the Boston attack is immediately followed by Ricin plots (police say they are unrelated).

There is as yet no word on Boston. CNN/Fox both got it horribly wrong earlier in the day saying police caught a suspect. It appears police have a suspect, but he/she/it is not caught. The fact no photo of the suspect has been release might indicate the police think they can find him without any further public input, so they are keeping cards close to their chest.

John McQuaid
The Times-Picayune:

“…Environmental justice proponents say that discrimination is woven into the landscape in ways never officially acknowledged. It can be found in cumulative results of decisions made over decades by agencies that traditionally paid little or no attention to the concerns of minorities or the poor: zoning boards, economic development bodies, and transit and environmental agencies. As a result, many people have fallen through gaps in an environmental safety net that is supposed to protect everyone.

In many places, poor and minority communities sit uncomfortably close to industrial sites and infrastructure such as freeways and off-ramps, while white people and others higher on the socioeconomic scale live farther away. That means minorities and the poor bear more environmental burdens — pollution, health risks, lowered property values — than the rest of the population. At the same time, they get fewer of the benefits such as jobs and other perks of industrial growth.

Rehtaeh Parsons’ family being ‘harassed’ by supporters of alleged rapists

Rehtaeh, 17, died earlier this month in a Canadian hospital after attempting to hang herself. She was allegedly the victim of a sexual assault and faced harassment from her peers, who labeled her a slut. A picture of the incident was widely shared at her school.

The incident sparked international outrage, leading police to re-open the case. Hundreds of people attended Rehtaeh’s funeral on Monday.

But on Wednesday the residents of Halifax awoke to find multi-colored posters supporting the four boy who allegedly raped Rehtaeh stapled to telephone poles. The posters were even put up on the street the Parson’s lived on.

“My daughter is gone because of them and they have the nerve to show up on my street and my community where my children live and keep harassing us,” Leah said. “That’s harassment.”

I have to wonder if the actual suspect is even among the crowd-sourced photos we’ve been seeing plastered everywhere today. They FBI says what interests them came from security video, which I wouldn’t think would be publicly available at this point. Emphasis mine:

Suspicions in Boston Attack Turn to Man Seen in a Video

BOSTON — In the first major break in the hunt for the Boston Marathon bomber, F.B.I. personnel on Wednesday found security video clips that showed a man they believe may have played a role in planting the explosives that killed three people and injured more than 170 on Monday.

The videos also showed at least a handful of others whom the authorities want to question, either because of what they appear to be doing in the video or their proximity to the blasts, a senior law enforcement official said.

The official said the authorities were trying to boil down the number of people of interest in the videos and would then decide whether to ask the public’s help in locating them.

“It’s a crowd, there are a lot of different angles. It is not like some television-produced video — there’s a lot that isn’t clear,” said the official. “But most interpretations support the notion that one man is seen dropping a bag.”

The official added: “There are several videos with people in them, and we’re looking to talk to more than one guy. It’s still very squishy but there are a lot of interesting people” the authorities want to talk to. […]

All the lessons of the past — from Richard Jewell to NPR’s announcement of the death of Gabby Giffords to CNN’s erroneous report on the Supreme Court Ruling on ObamaCare — fail to inform the present. Oklahoma Congressman: ExxonMobil ‘Should Be Patted On The Back’ For Arkansas Oil Spill

ExxonMobil’s recent oil spill dumped some 200,000 gallons into Mayflower, Arkansas, killed wildlife, and caused 22 homes to be evacuated. As the Natural Resources committee takes up another bill to approve the Keystone XL pipeline, Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) argued at a hearing that the spill is more evidence the Keystone XL pipeline is a safe bet for Americans.

Comparing the safety of a pipeline to other transportation methods, Mullin said there is no reason to make a “big deal” about the spill:

“Would we really rather ship oil across the oceans? You’re talking about a catastrophe, we’re buying the oil. The percentages of barrels that are shipped daily from rail, from road, and from water the accidents versus the pipeline accidents, it’s a fraction. Your group is making a big deal about this ExxonMobil spill? I think Exxon should be patted on the back for the way they handled this. Yes this was horrible, yes we don’t like to see it, but they handled it. They did a great job handling it. I think they showed an example of what could be done when a catastrophe happens.

But for NBC, if I recall (I was working and only “listening” (loosely) in the background. I didn’t see any of the false reports until I logged on here a good hour after the fact.

Charles, and all, come here first for all news, because every one of you ROCKS! The Pages and comments are amazing at digging up what’s going on (especially looking at you, Gus).

Thanks one and all!

Yep, NBC did good today.

Sure, but you can make a bomb out of lots of stuff. My point is that ammonium nitrate is intrinsically a dangerous substance in large quantities and high concentrations, even when ostensibly used peaceably and safely.

The lack of professionalism really sucks. I hate that major media outlets can no longer be trusted to fact check. Pew was spot on in their report last month.

Pew was spot on. Also see: stateofthemedia.org
Which is why I find the complaints about CNN getting the story about the arrest in the Boston bombing from CNN to be slightly misplaced, Networks who do little, none, or 10% actual news reporting have very little chance of getting a story “wrong” since the “pundits” just reading opinions from a script that’s been written for them by a staff of writers. The news cycle is setting itself up for a very bland and safe style of reporting. I’m among the first to criticize the media but I expect false reports, dead end leads and roll with the punches with fast moving stories. The outrageous outrages are creating a risk adverse environment where actual news reporting (however imperfect) is being punished and safer opinion based coverage is being rewarded with a built in partisan audience.

re: #309 Bear

Any report about what type of fertilizer was being made there?

Won’t point to any report, but where I grew up one of the local industrial products was ammonium nitrate, which is the basis for the Nitrogen component of most fertilizers. The other two are Phosphorus and Potassium salts or oxides.

Ammonium nitrate is a component of some explosives, and is a feedstock for various industrial chemical processes. By itself it presents a modest or significant explosive hazard, especially when combined with some water (ie, poor storage) and/or exposed to ignition sources (such as lightning). Elevated water content increases the risk of explosion.

340 jaunte  Wed, Apr 17, 2013 8:12:03pm

I’m not in any physical danger: I live in a condo building on the second floor, so my living space is not going to flood. I’ll also be safely away when the water is rising rapidly, so that isn’t an issue.

I was pretty skeptical (ok, downright dismissing) the efforts of 4chan and reddit on doxing the bombing suspects. Neither site is a reliable source of opinions or facts. However, like my comment above about CNN, I’m glad someone out there made the effort to look through the pics and use the information available. This is the sort of thing that used to happen on political blogs; looks through the evidence and see where it leads. If nothing else I found their efforts interesting and I don’t expect them to crack the case but I wouldn’t be terribly surprised in they stumbled across the bombers somewhere. I’ll at least give them credit for effort and some original work.

I’m (sort of) glad someone’s making an effort too, but they’re not pros and there are surely some innocent bystanders having their photos plastered all over the internet as being “suspicious” according to the amateur sleuths. I can’t help but feel bad for them and hope that it doesn’t cause them any further trouble—they’ve got more than enough to deal with after having been there and witnessed the carnage.

Police helicopters are circling around the Capitol Building here in Austin. She Who Must Be Obeyed just told me that via Twitter the EMS manager in West is estimating 60-70 fatalities and well over 200 injured. Another feed from Houston is saying five firefighters and a policeman were killed (with at least 65 others) and injuries are in “the hundreds”. All hospitals from Austin to Dallas are on trauma alert.

I think Faux News is genuinely frightened that the Wingnuts have lost their minds — well, violently so, instead of just frothingly so.

I was forced to watch BillO at work on Tuesday, and he was damnright defensive of the President, saying that he felt he was handling it just fine, that President Obama’s taxes was a non-issue given that he donates 25% to charity, etc.

Of course, this is still Faux News, so they had some pretty faced troll woman alongside Alan Colmes (the most milquetoast liberal they could find over 10 years of searching) ranting that Obama’s a huge hypocrite for not voluntarily paying 100% in taxes, because lol-liberals wanna tax everything, ‘m I right!?
