Janet Napolitano: Injured Saudi Witness Is NOT Being Deported

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano stated today that the idiotic right wing claim that the injured Saudi witness to the Boston bombings is being deported is yet another false rumor.

A Saudi student questioned in connection to the bombing of the Boston Marathon is not being deported, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a House panel Thursday.

“I am unaware of anyone who is being deported for national security concerns at all related to Boston. I don’t know where that rumor came from,” Napolitano said.

That rumor came from the right wing blogs, of course, who are being absolutely despicable in their “coverage.”

For one example out of many, here’s anti-Muslim hate group leader Pamela Geller at breitbart.com, ranting and raving and “demanding answers:” SAUDI NATIONAL DEPORTATION: AMERICAN PEOPLE MUST DEMAND THE FULL STORY.

There is one Saudi national who is in a Boston hospital, and has been questioned by the FBI because he was at the marathon during the terrorist attack.

He is not a suspect, nor is he a person of interest. He was an individual at the marathon, and therefore, like so many individuals, has been questioned.

Easy, they’ll take something he said that they’ll construe to be liberal or leftist (attacks on American foreign policy contrary to right wing belief isn’t necessary the mark of a leftist or liberal) to give an example and run with that. It will be no true Scotsman or in this case no true conservative. Unless, it’s really obvious he’s one of their own like Brevik, then I don’t know what they’ll do. It was easier for them to have sympathy with Brevik since his victims were the youth members of a left wing party in Norway and Glenn Beck compared them to Hitler Youth memebrs.

Little more complicated than that. In Texas there are two types of cities…home rule and general law. West, Texas is a home rule city meaning it is able to make its own laws. As such, they will have specific use zoning requirements. I checked Google Earth history and the fertilizer plant existed before the surrounding houses and schools. This means that a builder would have had to have a zoning permit change approved by the local government before building.

Big difference between rooting for something, on one hand, and speculating that the perpetrators might be right wing extremists. They also might be Islamic radicals. We shouldn’t be able to talk about who the likely terrorists are?

The difference being that white males don’t get group-blamed, beaten up, and occasionally killed for the violent actions of other white males at at all the same rate as, say, any other ethnic clade.

As someone who’s family is 50% Muslim and 75% South Asian of the mistaken-for-Arab variety, I’m very much on pins and needles about who did it. Threats, insults, and posturing are already boiling over—there’s been a retaliatory assault already.

As someone who’s family is 50% Muslim and 75% South Asian of the mistaken-for-Arab variety, I’m very much on pins and needles about who did it. Threats, insults, and posturing are already boiling over—there’s been a retaliatory assault already.

I have big concerns for my best friend from childhood. She, of course, doesn’t. I worry about everyone.

As usual, I’m late to this thread, but I want to say something anyway.

I’m beginning to think the wingnut bloggers & powers that be are building the foundation for a conspiracy theory that rank & file wingnuts can fall back on in the event that the bomber(s) turn out to be white non-Muslims and they’re faced with a case of cognitive dissonance of epic proportions.

Heck, even non-wingnut Americans are feeling that fear, as is pointed out in this Page I posted on Tuesday about an article written by a gentleman over at NOLA.com. As many will remember from the Oklahoma bombing, and as I’m sure the people of Norway can attest to, it’s horrifying for people to realize that one of their own, so to speak, is capable of such an evil act.1

Trust me on this—I know because I still run across the occasional Muslim “truther” who refuses to accept that 9/11 was carried out by fellow Muslims.

1. Just to clarify, decent Americans (or Norwegians, or whoever) shouldn’t feel guilty for despicable acts by their countrymen, but they do… precisely because of their decency. The same can be said for decent Muslims. In my book, decent people also find the courage to confront their fears head-on and work past them, they don’t create scapegoats—be those scapegoats the government, Muslims, Jews/Israel, etc.—to avoid dealing with painful realities.

I dunno. I wasn’t citing anything except my personal experiences. Shit got ugly for my family after 9/11. Thankfully most of them emigrated to Canada.

I still cringe thinking about that one Sikh cab driver who was murdered after 9/11. Anyhow, as badly phrased as that article puts it, it would be “better” for it to be a White Guy because there’s not going to be a rise of violence against white males if the perp turns out to be one. There wasn’t that after OKC like there was a rise of violence and hostility at Asian males following 9/11 that continues to this day. And frankly, that’s the one thing that the stupid angry white males in this country should feel content in. They’re not going to be scapegoated the way members of a minority group would following something like this and I should emphasize, nor should they. BY the way, sorry what your family went through. People can be such bastards.

For the record, I’m proud of the LGF reaction to the Boston bombings, and I have NOT seen anyone “rooting” for the criminals to be right wing terrorists. The reaction has been thoughtful and balanced, and nothing like the deluge of hatred that’s all over the right wing blogs.

There was a time when the first comments posted here would have been blaming the bombing on Muslims with absolutely no evidence. You see a lot of those same people now posting their hatred at wingnut blogs — because they’re not welcome here.

It took me some time to understand how necessary it was to moderate comments like those, but those days are LONG gone, and they’re never coming back.

In terms of national impact, it would be ‘best’ if it were one nut on the Eric Rudolph/Ted Kaczynski spectrum. We could work around that a bit better.

I dunno. Those two took awhile to catch. As I said, it’s not really a “hope” that it’s a white guy but if it has to be anyone, let it be a white guy because no one’s going to around beating up white dudes because of this like what happened with the one guy in the Bronx.
