Interesting. I have it open in Photoshop right now and I don’t see any obvious signs of a fake.

I don’t think we’ve got any other shots of the subject’s head from that angle, so a photoshop would be a neat trick.

There’s some artifacting around Suspect 2’s head.

That said, my jury is undecided.

7 bubba zanetti  Thu, Apr 18, 2013 5:23:07pm

The ‘distorted pixels’ behind the head are standard jpeg compression noise in high contrast boundaries.

Pixellation in a JPEG image is not necessarily evidence of manipulation. All JPEGs produce those kinds of artifacts.

Why the Taliban is aggressively disavowing the Boston Marathon bombing

The Taliban didn’t waste any time after the Boston Marathon bombs exploded before they publicly declared that they had nothing to do with the attack, which killed three people and wounded more than 160. On Tuesday, a spokesman for the Taliban in Pakistan, Ehsanullah Ehsan, said nobody in the Islamist insurgent group was involved. “We believe in attacking U.S. and its allies,” he said, but “we have no connection to this bombing.”

Other Taliban leaders disavowed the Boston attack far more forcefully, saying that any gloating by Islamists about the carnage would turn the bombings into a nightmare for the Taliban, even if the culprit or culprits turned out to be homegrown American terrorists. “You won’t find any link with Afghanistan to the Boston attack,” a former senior Taliban cabinet minister tells The Daily Beast. “The Taliban neither has the inclination nor the capacity for such an attack on the West.”

It seems counterintuitive. But it actually makes sense that the Taliban are desperate to avoid being associated with the strike, say Sami Yousafzai and Ron Moreau at The Daily Beast. “Senior Taliban officials say such attacks on the West are counterproductive,” the writers say, “and they fear that such actions can only hurt the Taliban’s efforts at shedding its image in the West that it is a terrorist organization that shelters al Qaeda and condones al Qaeda-inspired attacks.”

That’s also a very common thing you see when you zoom in on JPEG-compressed images. To compress the image, it’s divided up into square sections, so where the boundaries of the sections lie you will often see what appear to be unnaturally straight edges when you zoom in.

33 erik_t  Thu, Apr 18, 2013 5:36:33pm

It’s an immensely noisy image. Pointing to individual chunks of noise and declaring them evidence of alteration, especially when they appear where they ought to (regions of high contrast) is incredibly naive.

(reposted from downstairs)

While I am not all that knowledgeable about Laban Movement Analysis, watching the video implies to me that S1 and S2 were working together.
* They follow the same path through the crowd, 3-4 paces behind.
* They are not looking at anything other than their path.
* They seem to have a destination in mind.
* They seem to have a “movie military” reaction when they split up.
* There also seems to be a “movie” style walk-away from dropping the bombs.

Also, if it can be determined that they were talking via cellphones to each other at the same time as the drops (which looks likely), I understand why the FBI labels these douches suspects.

I’m not sure the released video and photos are enough to ID them; seems too spotty to me.

Last night’s numbers were presumably an off-the-cuff guess based on proximity. Today’s numbers may instead be associated with actual names and bodies.

The 35 number still seems to be somewhat off-the-cuff and relatively early.

Dallas Morning News has the mayor stating that 80% of the effected area (roughly) has been searched and they’ve found between 8-10 bodies. The bad news is they haven’t gotten onto the plant grounds yet. (Source.)

There continue to be mixed reports as to whether it was ammonia or ammonium nitrate but my money remains on the former. The latter is transported as a solid (to my understanding), not in tanks. Also, the school officials have stated that they had no idea of the explosive capacity of the chemicals at the plant, which would be unlikely if the plant (dealer, really) had substantial amounts of ammonium nitrate on hand.

At that distance it could just be deep shadow making white appear black, easy enough to have happen when you take a low res at distance and zoom in on something in the background that’s in deeper shadow than the foreground exposure was set for.

Consumer-grade MPEG2 encoders produce absolute crap for image quality. Doubly so at compression levels required to extend storage space to reasonable levels.

The FBI says they have not release all of the footage and images they have, just the ones that are most likely to lead to identification. One of the videos they haven’t released allegedly show’s the white hat guy dropping his backpack in the location of the second bomb I believe.

Backpack wouldn’t have been in front of the barricades, based on the after photos. It needed to be behind the barricades in order for the blast/impact to wrap one of the barricades around the mailbox.

170 Prononymous, rogue demon hunter  Thu, Apr 18, 2013 7:16:36pm

The picture is at the right place and time. Of course the conspiracy theorists don’t have a leg to stand on.

This picture really isn’t too bad. It’s just a wide angle lens. That means the individuals take up a relatively small area on the camera sensor and there isn’t much detail recorded in terms of number of pixels. Exacerbate the issue with JPEG compression and zooming way in and the blocky look is a natural result. More detail in the subjects could have been resolved with a narrower angle lens. But then the subjects wouldn’t have been captured, they are at the edge of the frame already. Perhaps a wide angle lens with better edge sharpness or a camera like the D800e with more sensor resolution would have helped. But then again, most people don’t have thousands of bucks to blow on camera equipment like that. The only free improvement to be had would be if the lossless raw file is available, but that is unlikely.

I don’t know what the loons are expecting really.

Edit for clarty, I mean the top picture.

The picture looks consistent with pictures released to the media of him. He died at the second bomb site, which is what is pictured there (obviously pre-bombing). My understanding is that Lingzi Lu also died at the second blast site.

We’ve got this guy, who has done as much as he can to hide his appearance.

A man wearing a cap, sunglasses and a black jacket over a hooded sweatshirt looked at Jeff, 27, and dropped a bag at his feet, his brother, Chris Bauman, said in an interview.

Then we’ve got White Cap, who mugs for the cameras and does everything up to dropping his pants and mooning them.

What am I missing here?

189 insert name here  Thu, Apr 18, 2013 7:26:50pm

Just a short note regarding JPEG pixilation artifacts…

JPEG images actually “compress” the original picture data so that an image can be stored with many fewer bits. This compression process, however, is “lossy”, that is, information is lost and some image quality is sacrificed.

The compression process actually works by converting a picture’s spatial data into frequency information (via a technique known as a cosine transform), and this frequency information is then quantized. The upshot is that the higher frequency information is the first to be thrown out (and is unrecoverable, hence “lossy” compression).

The result is that, within an image, objects that have sharp transitions (e.g. from light to dark or vice-versa) will have some amount of “ringing” around them ( the amount of ringing is determined both by the degree of compression and the sharpness of the transition).

Charles is exactly correct - the artifacts around the guy’s head is because the image is, or was, a JPEG.

(By the way, this type of ringing has an analogy in the audio world: if you pass a square wave through a low pass filter and look at the resultant waveform on a scope, you’ll see ringing on the transition).

There. Everything you didn’t want to know about JPEGs and why they have artifacts.

Note that if that maximally broke down on party lines that would be 100% of Democrats vs. 80% of Republicans.

86% of gun owners want it.

looking at them and knowing the area I can’t help but think they are college roommates, either in a dorm or an apartment in the area that caters to college kids. Keep in mind there are at least a dozen colleges within walking distance of where this happened. Some are large schools with 10’s of thousands of students at that

Is that ringing what we refer to as Noise?

The artifacts really aren’t noise, in my opinion. Noise, to me, is a random process, such as you would see on a tv screen when the tv was set to a channel that no one was broadcasting on (back in the old days!). Rather, these artifacts represent the loss of original picture information, rather than the addition of random stuff.

There are a lot of similarities in the colors and shapes to rule out the possibility during an investigation. Keep in mind things can be covered, shading can occur (naturally and electronically), etc. You cannot dismiss it out of hand because of what you think you see.

I didn’t dismiss anything out of hand.

1.) You asked if something could be a backpack. I said WH’s backpack wasn’t black or dark blue, it was gray.

2.) You then disputed that, asserting that we could only see the that the top. I said you were wrong and provided a screenshot showing why.

In which case did I dismiss anything out of hand, #1 or #2?

I just checked PJ Media. Those people are being lied to and they’re so badly informed.

They’re NOT being told that 90% of the public wants universal background checks on gun buyers.

Note that if that maximally broke down on party lines that would be 100% of Democrats vs. 80% of Republicans.

86% of gun owners want it.

So they also WEREN’T told that it was a filibuster. They think there was a vote.

No. Ringing is an artifact from passing an edge through an image filter. Noise is random artifacts from sampling the sensors. But the best explanation is just looking at some images in the Wikipedia entries.

Okay, this isn’t quite the best example since it involves robbery. But I would think if you say rob a state bank, then you’d be prosecuted by your local county but if you say robbed a bank owned by the federal government, then it would be federal. Kidnapping someone and then taking them across state lines also gets the feds involved. Not totally sure about things like murder and terrorism though.

RAW files are essentially recording exactly what light is hitting the sensor. It’s the digital version of a negative, if you were. They are BIG files, but excellent for doing photo manipulation after the fact, if desired. For example, this and this are the same base image, processed from RAW differently (Tofino, British Columbia, where I was last week).

A lot of cameras will save as RAW , which means they also save a JPEG file processed according to the on-board parameters, since most folks expect JPEG images. That’s probably what you’re seeing when your computer transfers the files.

Photoshop can save in a variety of formats; my guess is that yours is set to default to PNG (for Internet use maybe?) as I believe it is somewhat better than JPEG in terms of loss of image quality. I’m not sure on that part though.

re: #279 klys

Your pictures are beautiful. What type of camera did you use?

PNG isn’t for internet use, it’s just the Photoshop file ending. All I know is that when I save a photo for the web (in JPG) the quality is much worse. I use PNG for printing and working with in Photoshop.

Ok. I need clarification. What was your basis for believing the Saudi National was a person of interest?

They were searching his apartment while he was under guard in the hospital. My points were 1) Just because Spencer et. al. want desperately for the perp to be Muslim does not mean he was not Muslim and 2) it seemed to me until -after- the police left his apartment and spoke to his room mates that he was indeed a person of interest.

I also mentioned that any speculation and any applying of a political stencil was wrong before the facts came out which I assume most people here agree with.

re: #203 insert name here

The artifacts really aren’t noise, in my opinion. Noise, to me, is a random process, such as you would see on a tv screen when the tv was set to a channel that no one was broadcasting on (back in the old days!). Rather, these artifacts represent the loss of original picture information, rather than the addition of random stuff.

They are noise in two senses:
1) any deviation from perfect is noise
2) some of that isn’t really gibbs phenomenon, it’s quantization noise in cosine coefficients.

To the extent that a compressor might just decide to zero out high frequency bins, you get actual gibbs phenomena. However that can be avoided by putting in some roll off in the bins near the zeroed ones. There’s also a trade off between sharpness and lack of ringing - if you upsample a signal then unless you want roll off you have to have some ringing. Though for pictures you can use a compact ringing kernel that’s just 2 or 3 pixels and preserve the sharpness, people’s eyes not being sensitive to frequency aliasing the way ears are…

I know WAY TOO MUCH about this.

Purists and pros import as raw images. That way you get a full lossless image with no compression. All the data is still there so if you want to lighten or darken exposure, adjust white balance & other things in lightroom you can easily do so. It takes a lot more space however, so I don’t recommend it if you take lots of pictures (I’ve got 35K and that’s with a lot of culling out the ones with imperfections.)

Think of it like storing the negatives of the photos versus the prints. It’s much easier to make a reprint from the negative, especially if you wanted to change the size of the photograph or alter it in some way. With the print, you’re kind of stuck and the reprint will never be as good.

Your images should upload in RAW. If you’re uploading them in JPEG then there’s no point in shooting in RAW. PNG is a lossless compression format and will compress graphic well but won’t save layers. If you want to save projects in progress for tweaking later then use .PSD and adjustment layers, that way you aren’t irrevocably altering any data.

Yeah, I always go back to the original file when I’m playing. I find degradations from copies within layers. Always copy from the original layer in PSE.

Well, all my photos first get downloaded in to iPhoto, because then they go into the Cloud. (I think, Dog help me), I was downloading directly into Photoshop, the quality was much better. But nothing was going anywhere but my external drive. Now, It’s just my artwork that is not in the Cloud. I could, I guess, Pay the monthly fee and work in the Creative Cloud.

Dog, it’s such a mess. My husband asks me for a picture to email someone and It takes forever to find it. Lightroom is really, really nice. I second this. It organizes my files for me, I can make virtual copies so I can play with different processing parameters, and it puts things into a relatively intuitive format for dealing with the processing.

I just sent a copy to my sister for her to play with (she just got a camera around Christmas) and she also loves it.
