Still pretty sure this stuff is connected to MIT. There was a police presense in Somerville since the shooting, which I assume meant they were making a perimeter around the entire MIT area. Cops are now gone.

I hesitate as there was discussion on the police scanner regarding suspect versus active shooter.

For the record, I am listening to the Boston scanner feed.

Black hat guy?

13 erik_t  Thu, Apr 18, 2013 10:34:03pm

This is where the stupid and excitable part of me observes that the man in the images above is white and thin and young and therefore must surely be one of the bombers (when in fact we don’t even know that the images from earlier today are of the bomber(s)).

The stupid and excitable part of me is stupid and excitable.

can’t really tell. But if it was one of them I would say more likely black hat than white hat.

White hat looked a little on the short side to me.

Children’s still on lockdown, Children’s still on lockdown.

My guess is this is Children’s hospital, which I would guess is a ways away. This is a citywide scanner. There are unrelated incidents.

What use is that to anyone?

It only takes a few hours to bleach and/or dye hair.

It will be interesting to see where all this goes.

A good point but speaking superficially, it looked to me like #2 had more curly hair and the man on the ground in that photo has more straight/wavy hair.

Not to go from blackish to light brownish. You have to bleach and dye. I’m doubting it.

The police scanner is surreal. Quote just now: :We do not have a second suspect in custody!

28 Petero1818  Thu, Apr 18, 2013 10:39:43pm

it appears that a 2nd suspect is loose

29 klys  Thu, Apr 18, 2013 10:39:49pm

I’ve got my own wacky theory, which I have enough good sense to keep the details (and the image of what probably is an innocent person) to myself.

Searching Google images for Boston protests over the past year, I found a person in a confrontation to the police whose face matches pretty well with “white hat”

But I realize I’m probably just seeing things. It is very hard to resist the temptation to want to solve this from the comfort of my house!

Yea I feel you but what are the odds of there being a different group of people near Boston making bombs that have nothing to do with the guys who bombed the Marathon.

I mean then the options would be there are more then 2 people involved in the bombing. The people the FBI are looking for in the pictures are not the same people. Or worst yet there is a lot of groups of people in this country that like to make bombs and have a shit ton of weapons.

You might be surprised at how many people make bombs for fun.

LGF is covering this better than most news sites! I think there is too much speculation at the moment. I haven’t seen conclusive proof that MIT and the Marathon are linked. I also question why would the bombers remain in Boston - and only across the river no less. If they are foreigners, the only sensible thing to do after a bombing is to head straight for Logan Airport and take the first flight out. If they are Americans, then make a dash for the Mexican border, which, as far as I know, has no passport checks going in from the San Diego side.

It would be strange if the MIT cop responded to this location off campus. The robbers must have gone east into the campus before he got involved.

NYT:

Andrew Kitzenburg, 29, said he looked out of this third floor window to see two young men of slight build in jackets shooting at dozens of police officers from behind a black Mercedes SUV. The officers and the men were 70 yards apart, he said, and engaged in “constant gunfire.”

A police SUV “drove towards the shooters,” he said, and was shot at until it was severely damaged. It rolled out of control, Mr. Kitzenberg said, and crashed into two cars in his driveway.

The two shooters, he said, had a large and unwieldy bomb. “They lit it, still in the middle of the gunfire, and threw it. But it went 20 yards at most.” It exploded, he said, and one of the two men ran towards the gathered police officers. He was tackled, but it was not clear if he was shot, Mr. Kitzenberg said.

The other, he said, got back into the SUV, turned it towards officers and “put the pedal to the metal.” The car “went right through the cops, broke right through and continued west.”

The two men left “a few backpacks right by the car, and there is a bomb robot out there now.” Police had told residents to stay away from their windows, he said.

9/11 resulted in only a small number of ‘backlash’ attacks on those thought to be Muslims (a least one Sikh was mistaken for a Muslim). The only murders were of the Sikh man mentioned and another man who really was a Muslim. Their killer was caught and was executed by the state of Arizona in 2011.

The world is what it is. Sad. But how many US Muslims were killed or harassed after 9/11? I think there might have been a Sikh guy who was mistakenly killed after 9/11 if I remember correctly. Lots of harassment.

I don’t think there will be a mass retribution. I live in Arkansas and the south has few Muslims(and Jews). Still, there have been some Mosque burnings a few years back.

I hope and believe that the vast majority of Americans will realize that these bombers were assholes first, last and always. There possible religion has as much import as David Berkowitz’ and my faith.

Still, this is turning out to be very bad.

Let’s wait to see what the weapon turns out to be, OK? It might well have been illegally imported or converted (if it is in fact full-auto, this is almost certainly the case). I am reading one suspect CAUGHT at CBS Boston and Huffington Post. Caught? Dead?

No one is going to know/get the details right until at least 10:00 tomorrow morning. Don’t stress the details or you are not going to get any sleep tonight. I am in Jersey and this is keeping me wide awake.

Should sleep but so hooked. I really want to find out who these guys are and what their motivation was if any.

I doubt we’re gonna get their life stories in the next hour. At this point, my biggest worry is that both are accounted for and whether its the two Marathon suspects is confirmed or not.

One dark complected dude was caught and photographed on the pavement and then released! for being in the wrong place at the wrong time with a backpack!!! Another guy was caught and there are some murky pics on his arrest and may(or may not)have died according to conflicting news reports. The curly haired guy is NOT in custody according to the latest feeds.

OMG. The second guy Sunil, IF THIS IS CORRECT, vanished a month ago from an elite college… there was even a Facebook site set up that was removed late but I got to the Facebook site before it was taken down. He, Sunil, has a very nice family. He vanished a month ago, walked out of his flat without his wallet and ID, and, interestingly, the FBI was involved in his vanishing at the time.

There was a strong photographic resemblance between Sunil and suspect number two. I did not link to it earlier until I saw the above post.

Family appeals to missing student

Family members and friends have begun directing appeals toward Sunil Tripathi in hopes of encouraging him to return home, mother Judy Tripathi said Monday.

Since the former member of the class of 2012 disappeared three and a half weeks ago, family members, friends and law enforcement officers have been conducting foot searches in Providence and raising awareness of Tripathi’s disappearance all over New England.

“One of the things we’ve been thinking about for some time was to talk to him directly,” Judy Tripathi said, adding that she hopes he will “see us all together three weeks later, still hopeful, still optimistic.”

The family released a video on YouTube Monday encouraging Tripathi to contact them and let them know he is safe.

“Sunil, the only thing missing is you,” read the description on the video, which depicts immediate and extended family members and friends coordinating search efforts and speaking to the camera.

Family members have also posted photos and asked Tripathi to reach out to them through a Facebook page dedicated to the search. The family has corresponded with national missing persons organizations like the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System and LostNMissing, which also encouraged addressing Tripathi directly, Judy Tripathi said.

I’ll grant you that, but the flip side is also true: one picture isn’t enough to suddenly declare that it must be the right guy.

From the one photo comparison posted here, I am being cautious. Since the scanner has calmed down with the posting of the perimeter, I’m doing some looking (I have a hard enough time understanding voices over the scanner that I need to concentrate on that versus doing other things). I think it’s a mixed bag.

That being said, I’m cautious to some extent because Reddit has been trying to post this connection for several hours. It may be right, it may be wrong, but I’d like something more specific than ‘this one photo looks like him’ before I decide firmly one way or another. My hesitation, given the confusion in the media and apparently to some extent in the law enforcement ranks (based on sources), comes from that.

Absolutely. And another reason why eyewitness testimony is the most unreliable testimony. Hell, a “lie detector” test is WAY more reliable that eyewitness testimony. Same with photos.

My dad and his brothers are the same. Hell I’ve never seen those two uncles clean shaven and I can’t remember the last time my Dad was. I know for a fact that my 12 year old brother has never seen him sans beard. It’s funny because my Dad looks very similar to my one uncle except my Dad’s a half foot taller. Of course not. They had good reason to name him as a suspect. I was just surprised at some things like that white hat looked average height to me and Sunil is reported at 6’2 in height. I definitely trust the BPD knows what they’re doing here. After all, they’re trained for this and I am just one guy.

Two pictures, likely taken years apart. Different angles, different lighting. Picture from Monday is pixelated like crazy so there’s no way to tell whether or not there is a tiny mole there.

I want to point out that these are unconfirmed reports that it was said over the scanner.

I have been listening to the scanner all evening. I didn’t hear these names. I admit, they could have been named either while I was AFK or while I was not listening carefully, but this is one of the first major reasons I am taking this with a grain of salt.

I haven’t found any credible news website yet giving suspect names, so feel free to link. In the meantime, I look at a lot of the images and note that the tip of the nose seems to be in different locations - and this is frequently one of the most reflective portions of a person’s face.

What possible reason is there to bring two such individuals together to attack the US? Actually Columbine wasn’t really a revenge attack. Harris and Klebold were, respectively, a sociopath who wanted to create as much mayhem and bloodshed as possible, and a disturbed willing follower.

They weren’t seeking revenge against anyone in particular or for any clear reason. They planned to blow up the entire school cafeteria, which would have just been random slaughter like Aurora and Newtown. Their explosives failed to detonate, so the victims were all shot.

WTF? Or was that a totally different, innocent person they took naked?

Now scanner says Suspect #1 had an explosive on his person when confronted with police - possible suicide bomb.

klys - This picture seems to show the hook to the nose you were looking for: Image: IfEgkXB.jpg

Can we agree to disagree sinceconfirmation bias is potentially being in play on both our sides on this (I could write that off as an artifact of the pixellation due to compression as discussed during one of the earlier threads this evening) and compromise by not using the guy’s name until it’s released by law enforcement through official channels? I’ll settle for that.

DC Snipers. There are plenty of two-person teams of killers without being ideological. Everything about Robert O.’s comment is simply false. Which is why I thought it deserved no more response than “Um…..no.”

I think the older of the DC sniper had some race war thing going on, the younger definitely a disturbed follower.

At one point they stated that they had a potential second suspect and/or witness. I’d figure witness. I think the suspect was mostly off-scene by the time cameras arrived.

re: #425 EvilScott2

No, he was one of the folks arrested… the naked guy refused to back up or something, then was arrested. I think the cops forced his clothes off secondary to fear of explosives. He was/is not suspect 1 and was released! This is my understanding of naked guy.

Naked guy, from all appearances, was somebody who wouldn’t leave when the cops told him to and so was strip-searched as a matter of precaution. Some people just don’t know when to walk away.

CNN has no credibility this week. None. Nada.

Look, if it ends up being him, I will gladly eat my words. In the meantime, could we not link his name with this? His family is in enough agony without having the first search result be linking him with the bombings instead of the fact that he is missing. There are no recordings produced yet that show this name being given over the radio, despite the fact that I am sure people are capturing this.

I don’t see what the problem is with using his name here. I’m not the New York Post or CNN. No one is looking to us for information on the suspects. And suddenly stopping our use of his name isn’t going to change the fact that it was used a couple hundred times here, not to mention all over the internet.

It’s the same exact shit. Google looks at usage all over the web. If you’re right and they actually release it at the news conference, then you can rejoice in that. If not, then you have contributed to the pain of a family that is already hurting. I see not doing so as a win-win for you: no pain for a hurting family or getting say I told you so. Wikipedia says:

Non-lethal weapons, also called less-lethal weapons, less-than-lethal weapons, non-deadly weapons, compliance weapons, or pain-inducing weapons are weapons intended to be less likely to kill a living target than are conventional weapons. It is often understood that accidental, incidental, and correlative casualties are risked wherever force is applied, but non-lethal weapons try to minimise the risk as much as possible.

That the security guard got in their way, that’s why they killed him, and that’s why the whole rest of the night seems improvised? It goes like this:

In some order, they held up a 7-11, murdered an MIT campus police officer, and carjacked an SUV. Police tracked them using the anti-theft system in the SUV. Shootout in Watertown (?). Suspect 1 (blackhat) died. Reports are he had an explosive strapped to his chest. Suspect 2 (whitehat) is still missing. The search continues, Boston is locked down.

In the meantime, news on their IDs has supposedly broken, although at this point I don’t believe it until the news conference. And maybe another arrest. Who knows anymore?

And a survey of their attitudes on sex, the role of science in the world, etc. would match up in many places with the GOP.

Islamists look for people with holes in their lives and recruit them. Radicalism is an excellent opiate for the pain and uncertainty. Stoke a person with entitlement and anger and you can get them to do anything.

There’s more convergence between the 20-something American spree killer and a jihadist than we’d like to admit.

I had an Islamist try to recruit me. What this fool didn’t count on is that I promptly told my Sheikh about him, and the Sheikh called the police. This recruiter was placed under police surveillance and arrested shortly thereafter. This was in Berlin.

The local gunstore could legally sell to legal residents.

from the ATF:

An alien legally in the U.S. may acquire firearms if he has a State of residence. An alien has a State of residence only if he is residing in that State and has resided in a State continuously for at least 90 days prior to the purchase. An alien acquiring firearms from a licensee is required to prove both his identity, by presenting a government-issued photo identification, and his residency with substantiating documentation showing that he has resided in the State continuously for the 90-day period prior to the purchase. Examples of qualifying documentation to prove residency include: utility bills, lease agreements, credit card statements, and pay stubs from the purchaser’s place of employment, if such documents include residential addresses.

There’s been an anti-Muslim backlash for years, in fact it’s turned into an industry. The client base for that industry are those most worried about a backlash against conservatism, conservatives themselves.

An ideological embrace, American conservatism and fundamentalist Islam. They thrive on each other, need each other. Fueled by hate.

Now, more gas to the fire.

I interpreted as what you said being glad that Muslim immigrant kids, often subject to alienation and group blame in the US, don’t wind up bitter and reacting to that, but instead have forbearance, endure the alienation, and grow up to be just like everybody else.

Which I agree with. It is very easy for the alienated to radicalize, and we have very, very few american Muslims who do become radicals. I think this reflects the fact that most immigrants to the US understand that while our society is imperfect, to say the least, they wouldn’t have come here without sharing our democratic ideals.

Yes. I think from the Pew survey and Zogby that currently the Muslim community faces the most bigotry of any predominantly immigrant group (though the American Muslim community also draws heavily from African American converts). I rejected the implication that the vast, vast majority are anything but productive members of society who face this prejudice with dignity and that it in no way moves them towards the kind of horrific acts we saw in Boston.

So, not sure how that makes me either a “fucktard” or an Islamophobe.

This is where I’ve lived for over half my life and I’m a liberal. re: #791 A Mom Anon

OK is not the entire South though. There are a lot of liberals here in the South too, and while I cannot speak for all of us, I can say I get VERY tired of all this talk of writing off the entire area and to hell with us because we have a fair share of retrograde backwardass country fuckwads who consistently vote against their own best interests and don’t care who they hurt. This is where I’ve lived for over half my life and I’m a liberal. Before writing us all off down here, it might be prudent to remember that there’s a decent percentage of us who are liberal and trying to fight to make things better. If you’re on”my side” politically, it might be a good idea to take that into account. Just sayin’…..

A few observations:

I used to be much much more dismissive/bigoted about the South being a land of overalls, incest, and missing teeth. Then life intervened:

1) I live with a woman who’s from the Deep South and is one of the kindest, most open minded, and educated people who you will ever meet. She has relatives who are from NY state that are so bigoted that event the Klan would say, “Dude. Chill for a minute.”

2) I’m from NJ. To be blunt, the rest of the country hates us. Passionately. Why, I have no idea. I’m guess it’s because they think the 10 mile stretch of the NJ Turnpike that leads into NYC represents the whole state.

Not quite as bad as Southern bashing, but I know what it feels like to have people you work with think you and your family are troglodytes, mainly because you happens to live east of them across the Delaware River.

3) I was channel surfing and came across the tail end of a Jeff Foxworthy special. I know it sound corny, but he ended the show talking about what it’s like to be a Southerner.

Paraphrasing, but he said that the frustrating thing was people automatically deducting 20 IQ points off of you as soon as they hear a Southern accent.

4) The Philly/South Jersey region isn’t exactly a utopia of color blind bliss, to put it mildly. The Boston bombing suspects, and their assumed religion, are about to prove that.

It’s sound stupid, but I really try to remember this kind of stuff when dealing with Americans from other regions. I don’t always succeed, but I do try to make the effort.

Now those people from Freedonia? Screw ‘em. Whatever it is, they’re against it.

re: #813 ProBosniaLiberal

Because I saw how they treat perceived outsiders in Oklahoma.

And honestly, your statement there is odd. The South doesn’t absorb immigrants. It’s that simple. Look at the Anti-Mosque hysteria in Murfreesboro, or the Anti-Sharia Law attempts throughout the region. Or the passage of the Anti-Undocumented Workers law in Alabama.

re: #806 A Mom Anon

That just proves the point. Florida isn’t really all the Southern anymore. And Atlanta is much the same.

For me, when I think of the South, I think the Confederacy, Lynching, Jim Crow, anti-Government yahoos, and Anti-Muslim bigotry.

Maybe you should realize that these negative generalizations are really unfair. just as wrong as ethnic generalizations. Your negative stereotypes of the south deserve the call out.

Oh, I realize portions of the south are de-southernizing. In the end, in terms of cultural adaptability, the North can flex and absorb others.

Simply put, the South cannot. There is no such thing as a Hispanic or Muslim Redneck, for lack of a better way to term it.

And we’ve lost a couple of good contributors due to them getting tired of constantly fighting that attitude that there is some sort of monolithic “South” that is irredeemable, backward, and borderline evil.

Show a little empathy since I’m sure you would be upset if someone substituted “Islam” for “South” in the previous sentence.

But we do absorb immigrants. There is a HUGE Hispanic population here, also Indian as well as from various parts of Africa. You are speaking about Muslims, and IMO the problem isn’t a lack of absorbing, it’s about the hate whipped up after 9/11 that isn’t being allowed to dissipate. Before 9/11 there wasn’t an issue down here beyond the usual bullshit racism that is seen as a mostly Southern problem but is really a national issue.

Your inability to look at anything other than as groups is stupid no matter how many times you do it. It will always remain stupid.

You can say the South has a problem with assimilating immigrants (whether or not that’s actually true) without making the resoundingly stupid generalizations that you do. And again: There are plenty of Mexican rednecks. I know some great guys that are Mexican rednecks, who I used to work with. I have no idea why you think there aren’t. Is there some actual logic behind your weirdo belief that only white people can be rednecks? Is this a literal thing on ‘red neck’, is it as dumb as that?

If it means anything, that’s not necessarily just a Southern thing. Minnesota has the world’s largest Somali population outside of Somalia. There are a number of people here who are resentful and/or suspicious of the Somali Muslim population.

The “racism as national issue” thing is spot on. Here in the midwest, once you get out of any sizable town, you’ll find people who are quite comfortable throwing the n-word around.

I would venture a guess that societal racism is actually quite homogeneous across the US. What the South has going on that is unique, however, is block Republican voting, which is a result of broader historical trends. This leads to local government policy which is perhaps more apt to express latent racism.

The “South” may be a lot of things, some of them fucked up, but monolithic it isn’t anymore, not in the cities anyway.

Being a Nashvillian, I can tell you a few things, such as the opposition to the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro (open now since this past Ramadan, BTW) being from a relatively small number of people who actually live in the area and they were being egged on and supported from “anti-Islamists” from mostly out-of-state.

Another thing I bet you didn’t know about the Nashville area: while we have a sizable Hispanic population from all over, we also have the largest Kurdish community in America; we’re also pretty up there with our Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Sudanese, and Ethiopian populations, among others.

So, spare me your generalizations about “the South”.

There is also the cultural history of veneration of the Confederacy which leads to a lot of excusing of racism and even outright propagnadizing of racism. There’s totally really problems with racism endemic in the South to talk about. It’s a completely real problem. It’s also one that a lot of good people in the South have been fighting for literally hundreds of years, and other places in the US that are not in the south also have brutal problems with racism.
