Two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing killed an MIT police officer, injured a transit officer in a firefight and threw explosive devices at police during their getaway attempt in a long night of violence that left one of them dead and another still at large Friday, authorities said as the manhunt intensified for a young man described as a dangerous terrorist.

The suspects were identified to The Associated Press as coming from the Russian region near Chechnya, which has been plagued by an Islamic insurgency stemming from separatist wars. A law enforcement intelligence bulletin obtained by the AP identified the surviving bomb suspect as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, a 19-year-old who had been living in Cambridge, just outside Boston, and said he “may be armed and dangerous.”

Two law enforcement officials told the AP that Tsarnaev and the other suspect, who was not immediately identified, had been living legally in the U.S. for at least one year.

In Boston, still on edge over the attack on the marathon, and its western suburbs, authorities suspended mass transit and urged people to stay indoors as they searched for the remaining suspect, a man seen wearing a white baseball cap on surveillance footage from Monday’s deadly bombing at the marathon finish line.

I really wish we could have a national discussion about the WHY of all this. How do people end up so disenfranchised and isolated and angry? Where does that hurt come from and is there something any of us could do to promote closer and more empathetic communities?

My son is the same age as the kid they’re looking for right now. My son has been ostracized and alienated at the hands of his peers but he’s still not so angry he wants to hurt others. Is it because his dad and I are unwavering in our support of him(unless he’s in the wrong)? Is it because he’s managed to find pretty healthy outlets for the inevitable energy overload a 19 yr old kid has sometimes? What did we do different than this kid’s parents did? Or did we do anything different at all? And is all this maybe a clue that we should start the process of bringing our communities closer somehow? I don’t know, but it would be nice to cut through all the shit and start banding together and working the hell out of this problem because I don’t think it’s going to get better until we do.

A good point.

There’s three ways people respond to alienation and being ostracized.

Some go apeshit and start killing people.

Some kill themselves.

Some blow it off and get over it.

But as you said, it’s necessary that society needs to address this.

I think you can actually explain it by a failure to understand predicate logic, which is not all that implausible as even pretty bright undergraduates can get confused by this (fact):

Statement A (the “liberal position”): Not all Muslims are terrorists.

Statement B (the “Fox News liberal characterization”): All Muslims are not terrorists.

A does not imply B, but it’s not hard to mistake one for the other (especially if you’re doing it deliberately…)

Police scanner: broadcastify.com

Doesn’t surprise me; however, I wonder why they didn’t ask the scanner rebroadcasters to cease hours ago, because all the suspects would have to do to keep tabs on the cops is to use an app on their phone like Scanner Radio (on Android).

Besides, before they cut the channel off, Broadcastify’s Boston PD was getting slammed with traffic and going up and down; the last I looked (about an hour or so ago), there were about 150,000 people listening (or trying to). Most big-city police channels I’ve listened to through my Scanner Radio app maybe peak at 5000-10000 listeners when something’s going on; here in Nashville, 1000-2000 people is the max I’ve seen for Metro’s channel.

From MMFA: Why Glenn Beck is dangerous

Glenn Beck: We at the Blaze know that this Saudi national is a bad, bad, bad man … This administration is playing an extraordinarily dangerous game. They have very little regard for what it takes to be a citizen. Before the sequester cuts happened, they opened the prison and let illegals out. Who does that? Remember also, the Saudi national that was — is about to get on a plane — involved in blowing the legs off of American citizens, being held in protective custody or being protected, at least, by our administration. He will be put in protective custody and the plans are to deport him.

I’ve worked with children as a preschool teacher in the past. On thing I took away from that experience is that no one is born evil, hatred is learned. It’s all around us, so why do some react with so much anger and some respond by living lives based on love and concern? Just stating they are monsters does not ONE THING to fix what’s broken. In fact, I think that’s sort of part of the issue, since it seems like such a big thing then lets just dismiss it and not try to minimize the hatred and alienation.

Boston Bomb Suspect’s Dad Tells Him to Surrender, Warns ’ Hell Will Break Loose’ if Son Dies

The father of suspected Boston Marathon bomber called on his son today to give up peacefully, but warned the U.S. that if his son is killed “all hell will break loose.”

Anzor Tsarnaev spoke to ABC News from his home in the Russian city of Makhachkala as Boston police carried out an intense dragnet for his son Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

First of all, the post you responded to says nothing about the nobility of abortionists. Second of all, Gosnell is a criminal who is resoundingly repudiated by other abortion providers. Saying he represents most abortionists makes as much sense as saying the cannibal cop in NYC represents most police officers.

When they released the first images yesterday my initial thought was “Chehen” - the younger’s features are very “russian” to my eyes, and Chechnya of course is the only kettle of strife in that part of the world that would boil over into an international bombing.

One of the victims who lost his legs said yesterday that the elder brother looked him in the eyes right before putting the bomb down next to him. That speaks to an ethnic/religious level of hate so typical of that part of the world, that frankly it doesnt surprise me that dad would call him an angel. Hate like that is normal for conflict in that part of the world.

re: #128 Kurt Princeton

Gosnell is a criminal abortionist and deserves to be sent up for a long time.

But “abortionist” doesn’t carry the additional label of “noble” or “criminal” with it by default.

If abortion was clearly a woman’s choice and was legally available, reasonably priced, and with no social stigma attached such as lines of screaming protesters outside of clinics I suspect that Gosnell would not have been in business in the first place.

Legal, safe, and rare should be the goal. And achieved via education, not by restrictions, shaming, and punishment.

I kinda wonder the same thing:

Richard Engel on MSNBC was saying just a moment ago that “intelligence officials” are talking about the Tsarnaeva brothers in the context of the Islamic Jihad Union, which is described by Engel — and, presumably, his sources — as “an al Qaeda affiliated organization.” At least, Engel says, his sources are starting to “look in that direction.” I have no doubt that the latter is true. On a morning like this one, it’s the job of intelligence officials to look in many directions. But, for the moment, and from a distance, I will tell you what this looks as much to me as it does to anything else.

It looks like Columbine.

It may be Columbine with a thin overlay of politics. It may be Columbine with Jihadist YouTube videos instead of rambling diaries. It may be Columbine extended over a greater geographical area. But, for the moment, it looks like a couple of young people who went completely off the twig and decided to kill a lot of people. I’m wary of speculating that they simply came under the spell of some YouTube mullah. I also am wary of believing the staggering amount of information dandelion fluff floating through the air from within various intelligence communities. (CNN just reported the speculations of a “senior official” in Kyrgyzstan about the passports of the two brothers.) Right now, all I’m willing to say is that a couple of deadly misfits went on a crime spree for reasons, likely, known only to them. Right now, it’s not an act of war. Right now, it’s a multiple murder.

Lehrer Comments: “[The Old Dope Peddler] was just intended as a takeoff on a certain genre of sentimental songs, like The Old Lamplighter and The Umbrella Man, which no one remembers any more. The idea was, it was only going to be funny if I took the most repulsive, antisocial character to write the song about. I thought about doing The Abortionist, but at that time you couldn’t even say that. The dope peddler was the second choice, so there it was.” — 1996 Interview

For comparison purposes, here are the lyrics to the two songs mentioned as inspiration for The Old Dope Peddler:

I don’t know. Lots of things could happen. If, for example, a hard-core minority splinters off and forms the True Boys Scouts of Murica, for example, it could go quite quickly. Or it could take longer.

The point is that things are changing for the better, and all the signs are that they will continue to change. It didn’t get reported much what with the big events, but the Archbishop of Canterbury indicated yesterday that he supports civil partnerships for straight couples in the UK, essentially opening up the possibility of a fully-equivalent “married” status for gay and straight people there (i.e., the state has an equivalent status separate from individual church practice).

I actually think gay rights are advancing pretty quickly in the grand scheme of things at the moment, even though it can seem otherwise at a local level.

I do as well. He said he wanted to meet with the relatives of those killed and injured, bend on one knee and beg forgiveness.

He’s a sincere man; of that I have no doubt whatsoever.

That’s really admirable of him and a good reason why this shouldn’t turn into all Muslims or Chechens are like the Tsarnaev brothers.

Legally - and in my opinion functionally - terrorism is a crime of intent. The goal must be more than simple urge to slaughter, revenge for perceive slights, or a cry to “respect my authoritie.”

It is a crime of violence, actual or threatened, that is intended to have a political impact through intimidation of a large number of people beyond the immediate victims.

Unless and until we find the political intent this is mass murder, not terrorism.

The professor’s point was that the tendency towards antisocial behaviour is rooted in genetics, whether a mis-wiring or an evolutionary adaptation no longer appropriate, that in most people isn’t physically expressed without external, environmental influences. Both the genetic and the environmental conditions have to be met for antisocial behaviour to dominate.

And the older brother is a few years older than that. So they were both mostly raised in Chechnya.

It is way too early to talk about why they did this. If the older brother was in fact a radical Muslim, we need to know how he became that way. It may be that he was both radicalized but that the main instigation was what the Uncle said, that he was a misfit who was jealous and angry at others, like the Columbine kids. We don’t know, and any speculation now is of incredibly limited value.

And I find it offensive, when Americans have just died, for the Chechnyan president’s first instinct is to blame US society for it. As diplomacy, pretty much a failure.

NYT says the family came in 2002 or 2003.

Ah. Cool. Thanks for the update. Adjust my estimates by 1 to 2 years.

I disagree and admit that I’m confused with your use of the term “intent” Are you seriously saying the bombing was an act of mass murder as a thrill kill? That the timing and placement were mere happenstance? I just want to be clear on your “intent” hypothesis

Yes, the bombing - an act of mass murder - may have been a thrill kill.

See the cases of the batman movie killer, or the boys at columbine. For that matter any of several serial or mass murderers.

The key thing that turns mass murders into terrorism is whether they’re intended to sway political opinion. Are they intended to persuade, through fear or vicarious support, a change in law or political behavior?

Abortion bombers are terrorists because they intend to overturn the existing law, if not de jure then de facto, making abortions unavailable. ELF bombs and attacks are intended to force people to not harvest natural resources - lumber, fishing, etc. Major Nisal was a terrorist because his attacks were in specific furtherance of the al Qaeda aim of destruction of our nation through fear.

Adam Lanza was not a terrorist. Neither were James Holmes or Scott Dekraai.

The problem is that there are some fucked up dangerous memes out there, like jihadism on the one hand and “sovreign citizenship” on the other, and if your brain gets infected by one of them it can make you very dangerous. One of the bad side effects of the information age is how easily these memes can be spread to receptive minds.

Oh, then let’s explain it: The reason to ‘sit around’ is because it stops you from jumping to useless conclusions, and since none of us are going to actually do anything with the information, we lose nothing by waiting for accuracy instead of speculating. In general, you criticize the media for inaccuracy, and yet you’re more than willing to, likewise, start the speculation before the facts are in.

Nothing at all is lost to us by waiting for clarity. Nothing.

re: #328 Glenn Beck’s Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut

That guy is evil personified. Probably a psychopath:

In 2009, Kadyrov stated his approval of honor killings, based on the belief that women are the property of their husbands.

The Kadyrovites are often accused of working as a death squad against Kadyrov’s enemies. Ramzan is rumoured to own a private prison in his stronghold of Tsentoroi, his home village south-east of Grozny. Fields around Tsentoroi are allegedly mined and all access routes are blocked by checkpoints. On 2 May 2006, representatives of the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) alleged that they were prevented from entering the fortress.

On 13 November 2006, Human Rights Watch published a briefing paper on torture in Chechnya that it had prepared for the 37th session of the United Nations Committee Against Torture. The paper covered torture by personnel of the Second Operational Investigative Bureau (ORB-2), torture by units under the effective command of Ramzan Kadyrov, torture in secret detentions and the continuing “disappearances”. According to HRW, torture “in both official and secret detention facilities is widespread and systematic in Chechnya”. In many cases the perpetrators were so confident that there would be no consequences for their abuses that they did not even attempt to conceal their identity. Based on extensive research, HRW concluded in 2005 that forced disappearances in Chechnya are so widespread and systematic that they constitute crimes against humanity.

Kadyrov has been personally implicated in several instances of torture and murder. A number of Chechens opposed to Kadyrov have been assassinated abroad, and several witnesses (including Artur Kurmakaev and Ruslan Khalidov) report the existence of a 300-name “Murder List”. Chechens who have been murdered, where Kadyrov’s involvement is suspected, include Movladi Baisarov and Ruslan Yamadaev (both Moscow); Sulim Yamadaev (Dubai); Gazhi Edilsutanov, Islam Dzahnibekov, Ali Osaev (Istanbul); and Umar Israilov (Vienna)

Following a car accident in December 2005, in which Chechnya’s prime minister Sergey Abramov was injured, Ramzan functioned as the caretaker prime minister. He immediately proceeded to implement elements of Sharia law, such as declaring a ban on gambling and alcohol production, while speaking in favour of polygamy.

In February 2006, responding to the publication of the Mohammed cartoons, he accused the Danes of “spying” and being “pro-terrorist”. He also banned Danish citizens from entering Chechnya, effectively banning activity of the Danish Refugee Council, the largest NGO working in the region. Kadyrov is quoted as saying, “That cartoonist needs to be buried alive.” He was eventually pressed to overturn this decision by Moscow, a rare example of federal intervention in Kadyrov’s rule in the republic.

Up here in Canuckistan we build out-igloos for our toilets, which are made of ice. You have no idea how hard it is to get an ice toilet to flush.

LOL.

My ex-wife’s response to that comment as we were walking away was “Do Americans think the rest of the world lives in the trees or something? Do Americans really believe they’re the only civilized nation in the world? WTF is wrong with people over here?!”

That’s really not much of an explanation.

WTH Gus?

You go off to the twitterverse until you get your fill of wingnuts and moonbats, then you come to LGF and assign those thoughts to people here.

That’s fucked up.

Somewhat a centre of the universe syndrome. We have people coming from Toronto surprised at our urban settings. They think all Saskatchewanians live in Corner Gas.

I think evil people exist. That still doesn’t give us any information about how they become evil. Unless you think they start out as evil babies, it’s really not useful to say “because they’re evil”.

498 Mike Lamb  Fri, Apr 19, 2013 9:28:22am

By the way, an aunt of the bombers corroborated what the uncle said re: living in Chechnya (NPR interview). Apparently, they lived in Kyrgyzstan most of the time and spent little, if any, time in Chechnya. I was a little confused, but I think she said that the older one had a Christian wife.

IMO, some news media are being horribly irresponsible by airing footage of the homes of people they are interviewing.

I used to have relatives in Wadena. They’ve all passed away over the years; last time I was up there would’ve been 20-odd years ago.

I recall Saskatoon and Regina…..not bad places at all.

Oh, and Moose Jaw.

But, until the facts are known about the Boston Bombers- how can you say there was no political “intent”? By what information do you claim this as a mass murder/thrill kill?

There’s a third possibility, that they did this for mystical purposes.

If you haven’t been here in 20 years, you didn’t see Saskatoon’s growth. Regina has grown, but nowhere near as much. Moose Jaw is still Moose Jaw, and the giant moose is still standing guard.

They may do evil to strangers because they are insane, or they have an operating ideology that distinguishes both themselves and their victims into two distinct groups…. religion, wealth, politics in an extreme manner. It is very important to now why they do evil to strangers. Innocent children have been injured and murdered as have police officers, a student, a young woman. I would argue it is vital to understand the motivation.

While it is evil to target and vilify Islam and its adherents and to harass or persecute them; It is also dead wrong to bury one’s head in the sand and ignore religious inspired murder(if this turns out to be this) of innocent Americans.

re: #395 Walking Spanish Down the Hall

The professor’s point was that the tendency towards antisocial behaviour is rooted in genetics, whether a mis-wiring or an evolutionary adaptation no longer appropriate, that in most people isn’t physically expressed without external, environmental influences. Both the genetic and the environmental conditions have to be met for antisocial behaviour to dominate.

This is the position of Robert Hare (the developer of the Hare Psycopathy checklist): that certain people are born with a tendency toward antisocial behavior, which can be alleviated by good parenting but which, in the absence of good parenting, leads toward psychopathy.

And to stabby: if you think that beliefs are 0% biological, you might want to consult your neighborhood paranoid schizophrenic for another perspective.

Who’s burying their head? I’m an empiricist, I like facts. In my book all terrorists except the leaders are insane. All thrill killers are insane. No terrorist exists in a vacuum. But of course if you had paid attention the last 7 years you might realize that about me and not make silly ostrich accusations.
