Video: Uncle of Marathon Bombing Suspects Gives Extraordinary Interview

“What I think is behind it — being losers”
US News • Views: 22,498

For more: to.pbs.org

The marathon bombing suspects’ uncle, Ruslan Tsarni of Montgomery Village, Md., told the AP that they are from a Russian region near Chechnya and that they lived together near Boston and had been in the United States for about 10 years.

Speaking outside his home, Tsarni told Dzhokhar Tsarnaev — who remained at large and considered “extremely dangerous” — that he brought shame to the family.

“Dzhokhar, if you are alive, turn yourself in and ask for forgiveness,” he said.

I consider this unprecedented. For Chechen terrorists, the object their hatred is Russia, from whom they are seeking independence. Even though in recent years, Chechens have fought in Jihads in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq, this would be the first time a Chechen terrorist has struck at a Western country. If they are so young, then it is possible they were radicalized over the Internet and planned this independently of any larger Chechen terrorist organization.

There is no evidence that they are connected to a Chechen terrorist group. This is pure speculation at this point.

Money quote:

Tsarni called on his nephew to turn himself in. When asked why the suspects may have committed what Ruslan described as “an atrocity,” he said simply it was because they were losers.

“Being losers, hatred to those who were able to settle themselves; those are the only reasons,” he said. “Anything else to do with religion, with Islam, it’s a fraud; it’s a fake.”

Ruslan told reporters that the two bombing suspects wasted an opportunity for a great life.

“This is the ideal micro-world in the entire world,” he said of the United States. “I respect this country. I love this country; this country which gives chances to everybody else to be treated as a human being.”

Given the complete dreck I’ve been watching related this event, I’m afraid that characterization doesn’t give it justice. I have been shouting at my TV, saying “Why the fuck is that person talking? They don’t know anything about this subject, and they have nothing of value to offer.” I will note, Fox News in particular has people who know absolutely nothing about the related issues (in stark contrast to the BBC). Fucking Gulliani was on TV saying that this event shows that we shouldn’t have left Iraq because we’re losing valuable intelligence as a result.

No. I’m not kidding.

Boston Bombing Suspect Traveled to Russia Through NYC Last Year | NBC New York

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev flew in and out of John F. Kennedy Airport last year and was out of the country for six months, and investigators said they want to know if he received any terror training while he was overseas, NBC 4 New York has learned.

Travel records obtained by NBC 4 New York show Tsarnaev left New York on Jan. 12, 2012 for Sheremetyevo, Russia.  He stayed overseas and returned to JFK on July 17.

Local media is reporting that the bombers mother was arrested last year for larceny over $250. She (if this is her) stole about $1600 worth of clothes at the mall in the next town over from me. I remember reading this story at the time because I thought “she came all the way from Cambridge to steal clothes?”

Basically, doing a small explosion to destroy what could be a much larger explosion. In addition, the small explosion has no shrapnel or other material.

re: #52 DelusionDeluge

Controlled detonation is exactly what it sounds like. They destroy explosives or suspected explosives in-place when the situation implies that it may be to dangerous to move/disarm. Methods vary.

Sometimes they use water canons. The basic idea with the water is to dismantle the device and render the area safe; ideally taking the bomb apart without blowing it up.

Boston also has massive cylindrical bomb cans that they can put devices into. Sometimes they will trailer/tow the bomb away in that canister to a safer location and then blow it up.

Notice that they don’t say “Ties between Islamic extremists and Chechen extremists well-documented.” They use guilt by association to insult the entire country.

boston.cbslocal.com

In Johannes Hirn’s photo essay, “Will Box for Passport,” Hirn profiled Tamerlan Tsarnaev on his road to the National Golden Gloves competition in Salt Lake City. Throughout the 15-picture photo essay, Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s life is on display, talking openly about his religion, his straight-edge lifestyle, his boxing dreams, and the difficult time he had adjusting to living in the U.S. for five years.

“I don’t have a single American friend, I don’t understand them,” Tamerlan Tsarnaev said in the photo essay.

According to the photo essay, Tamerlan Tsarnaev studied at Bunker Hill Community College in hope of becoming an engineer. He would take a semester off from school in order to train for the annual boxing competition.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev told Hirn that his family fled Chechnya in the early 1990s due to conflict, living in Kazakhstan before arriving in the U.S. as a refugee. There is no reference made to his brother, who remains at large for his suspected role in Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and injured more than 170 people.

He noted himself to be “very religious,” saying that he didn’t usually take off his shirt when he sparred with female fighters “so girls don’t get bad ideas.” Tamerlan Tsarnaev noted that his girlfriend at the time, his sparring partner in a couple of the photos, is a half-Portuguese, half-Italian woman who converted to Islam. A devout Muslim, he said that he quit drinking and smoking.

“God said no alcohol,” he said to Hirn. “There are no values anymore.” He added that he worried about people who couldn’t control themselves.

76 simoom  Fri, Apr 19, 2013 10:05:24am

Since Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is an American citizen I wonder if that means we won’t be seeing the typical demands for military custody and a military tribunal:

slate.com

[Susan] Collins, more than some senators, was willing to tease out the hypothetical. “It’s a very important question, whether it’s a plot that originated overseas or whether it’s a lone wolf,” she said. “The question is: What do we do once we do capture the individual? How’s he treated? If he’s an American, obviously, then the constitutional protections pertain. If he is a foreign national, in my view, then he should be held by a military tribunal and he should not be read his Miranda rights as [the Christmas Day Bomber] was.”

Two more competitors in the “bag of dick eating” contest, I see.

Bryan Fischer won the Extra Large Bag of Dicks and Ann Coulter won the Large.

Although the award bag was already given out to Bryan Fischer, I’m sure some consolation bags can be given out.

I don’t recall anyone here putting up pics of innocent people on the front page claiming they are wanted by police.

@BryanJFischer

Tell you one thing: if everybody in Boston had a gun, it would be the Muslim terrorist who would be afraid.

Because instilling fear is what life is all about, eh Bryan?

The guy that has already set off two bombs; killed an MIT policeman; was involved in a bomb/fire fight with police; etc. etc. would be afraid?

What would happen if somebody with an AR-15 shot a pressure cooker full of ball bearings?

re: #104 Kragar

Yup, because we all know who the “Muslim terrorist” was from the get-go. It was the two guys on the cover of the NY Post. Wait, no, it was the missing student from Brown. No, wait, it was any number of people that 4chan identified.

Geez, it’s too bad we weren’t all armed to jump to conclusions and shoot innocent people while law enforcement was doing their job.

I’d like to think we hold ourselves to a higher standard than just not putting up photos of innocent people. Like trying to not do it and acknowledging when we get things wrong.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

(SUPPOSED) Twitter account of one of the bombers. Had updates post-bombing. Quoted Eminem in one of them, but the most surreal thing I’ve ever seen in my life has to be:

The bomber pointing out a meme picture about the bomb was false. Holy crap.

A genie bearing an amazing resemblance to Alton Brown would appear. And then bear the shooter off to Purgatory to scrub copper-bottom cookware for an extended period of time as their punishment for desecrating the spirit of the Lamp Kitchen.

re: #14 Robert O.

Wrong. Chechens are found worldwide fighting Jihad. Including Iraq and Afghanistan.

As CIA veteran Gary Schroen wrote in his 2005 book, First In: An Insider’s Account of How the CIA Spearheaded the War on Terror in Afghanistan, Chechens were among the most bloodthirsty enemies that U.S. special forces and allied troops faced in their campaign to oust the Taliban from power in the months after 9’11.

Historically accurate in all likelihood. Prior to the fall of the USSR we were supporting anything and everything anti-Russian.
