I don’t even think this has much if anything to do with religion (though the anti-muslim wingnuts are frothing). Chechnya has been a source of violence and extremists for quite some time, having been embroiled in anti-Soviet and anti-Russian combat for almost, well, forever.

My cousin knows these students pretty well since she’s worked with them over the years. She says she likes to tease them gently by coming in on her off time and pretending to be an ignorant tourist who thinks they’re Russians. They hate being called Russians but they get a good laugh when my cousin does it because they know she knows they’re not Russians and respects them and their culture.

Yeah he was executed about 4 miles from where I live, his execution day sure brought some weirdos out of the woodwork from around the country to stand along the road in front of the prison to protest his execution, it was a real mess.

Naturalized US citizen as of last year - I don’t think you can just dump him in Gitmo without a huge stink. And I expect/hope the ACLU would lead the charge to prevent it, along with a good chunk of the US citizenry and Congress.
