About That “Terrorista #1” License Plate…

(See updates below - the Daily Mail’s article is grossly inaccurate)
US News • Views: 43,910

The two men arrested last night in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings drive a car with the licence plate that reads: ‘Terrorista #1’

The students, named be neighbours by their first names Azmat and Diaz, drive a black BMW 330XI with the personalised plate and a sticker on the back which reads: ‘F*** you, you f****** f****’.

They are thought to be from Kazakhstan and had not been seen since the bombings until last night when their ground floor apartment in New Bedford, MA, was raided by a dozen FBI agents at gunpoint.
One of their girlfriends was also arrested. All three are in their late teens or early 20s.

Their apartment was raised because police say the younger Boston Marathon bombing suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, may have lived at their address.

What we have here is another reason not to trust the Daily Mail, often called the Daily Fail for obvious reasons. Turns out this is a novelty plate, using a phrase from the very popular song “Harlem Shake” (and many other DJ mixes): FADER Explains: Harlem Shake « The FADER

Where’d Baauer get the song’s other prominent sample, of someone yelling Con los terroristas?

The story of the terroristas sample is expectedly convoluted. In a since-deleted blog post, DJ Apt One, of the Philly DJ duo Philadelphyinz, explained his “small role” in the song’s creation. The sample first emerged in 2010, employed as part of a Philadelphyinz remix of Gregor Salto, DJ Gregory and Solo’s track “Con Alegria.” In 2011, that vocal sample was made available, a cappella, as part of T&A Breaks 3: Moombahton Loops & Samples, a compilation put together by DJ Ayres and Tittsworth. Baauer, who spent time living in Philly while working under the name Cap’nHarry and DJed at least once with Philadelphyinz, used the sample (presumably pulled from the T&A collection) and sent DJ Apt One the track in 2012. “We all appreciated the local incestuousness of [“Harlem Shake“‘s] creation,” wrote Apt One. “I can’t be happier for Philly and for Baauer getting some shine!” On a February 18th Reddit AMA, Baauer dodged a question about the sample, saying only: “found it on the innerweb.”

And the Daily Fail is wrong on another point as well — they were not arrested: Three People Questioned in Connection With Boston Bombings.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Three people in New Bedford, Massachusetts were questioned and released on Friday in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings, law enforcement officials said.

The announcement came as police captured Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, one of two brothers suspected of carrying out the twin blasts on Monday that killed three people and injured 176 others at the finish line of the Boston foot race. His brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was killed overnight.

“No one was detained. No one was arrested,” a spokesman with the Massachusetts FBI office said.

Seriously? The plate looks fake.

2 Charleston Chew  Sat, Apr 20, 2013 12:43:29pm

It does look fake but that may be because the light-reflective material on the plate is reflecting back the camera’s flash in a way that most surfaces don’t.

Real, but homemade. Surely UMASS doesn’t make a terrorista plate.

No, I’m sure that’s not an official plate of any kind. Doesn’t look homemade, though. Bought somewhere, probably.

I think there are machines in some places, kinda like a key machine or one that makes doggie ID tags that let you make your own custom plate for the front of your car(not the back, obviously). A friend of mine has one on her car with her name and a little pink ribbon in honor of her sister who died of breast cancer. That’s how she said she got her plate done, it was in some tourist trap down in FL somewhere.

This is my first and probably last time posting here but I found it very odd that a person from the Caucuses would have the Spanish word for terrorist right on a license plate. I looked online and found that apparently because of the song Harlem Shake it is slang for homie, etc. I have a 14 year old daughter so I am actually familiar with the song and you tube video. Very big among young people. However, I do not know if this it what it I’d referring to.

8 Randall Gross  Sat, Apr 20, 2013 1:37:40pm

In many states (like mine,) you don’t have to have a front plate, and you can buy all kinds of plates for the front of the car.

You can order both legal, and illegal vanity plates over the internet:

illegal fake plates:
customlicenseplates.com
Vanity plates legal in some states:
buildasign.com

Actually, this didn’t belong to the Tsarnaev brothers:

The plate is probably from a local novelty store that caters to colleges - it says “UMASS DARTMOUTH” and has the school mascot on it.

No, it appears that UMASS Dartmouth and the mascot are printed on the plate. The four “screws” on the plate are printed on, not real.

The frame is the black rectangle around the plate with the dealer’s name on it.

Diaz is a surname, not a first name. It’s probably a transliteration from Kazakh that just happens to be spelled the same as a Spanish surname.

Umm. No. It’s a plate. If you actually look at the photo in the globe article you can see that the black plastic around it with screws in it is actually the frame you speak of. The four brown screws you see are printed on, and “UMASS DARTMOUTH” “TERRORISTA#1” and the school mascot are printed on the actual plate in school colors.

And the right to an attorney is independent of Miranda. Miranda just requires that you be informed of your rights. And those rights have been repeatedly upheld by the Supreme Court. Of course, Fischer probably thinks the ‘Supreme’ part is blasphemy.

47 goddamnedfrank  Sat, Apr 20, 2013 3:58:06pm
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.

6th Amendment

Notice that the Constitution doesn’t qualify the right to have an attorney if you can afford one, but instead the right to the assistance of counsel is asserted unconditionally.

I’m seriously wondering if he got dragged into this whole mess by his older brother and that he went with it out of loyalty and some sort of perverse thrill seeking. That wouldn’t excuse or exonerate him at all, but it would make more sense than anything else I’ve read so far.

That’s what I think is likely. Kinda tamps down the desire to see him fry (which I didn’t feel in the first place).

Meanwhile, my own parents are using this to make a point at me regarding immigration (apparently, my Mom buys into the “children raised as terrorists” thing, while my Dad is a WASP-hole).

Which is ironic in my dad’s case. Mostly Dutch and German, and they took generations to assimilate. They wouldn’t fully assimilate till WWI, and that was done out of fear.

My folks are a product of the extreme right-wing fundamentalist Christian machine. I don’t know if I’d go so far as to call them true psychopaths, but there are definitely some short-circuits somewhere in their mental wiring.

re: #80 sattv4u2

some sort of perverse thrill seeking.

He certainly had a perverse look of pleasure in the photos from Marathon day,, ESPECIALLY the one showing him after the blasts

Right. That’s what I mean. He got something out of it, but I don’t think his motives were necessarily political or religious. His brother’s might have been, but the brother is dead now so it’s a moot point.

This 19-year old is too young and too isolated from Checnya to have any connection to the Islamic separatists out there. He grew up in the States from a very young age, and seems to have adapted fairly well to girls, parties, weed, and other things that are not typical of an Islamic fundamentalist. Besides, attacking Americans over Russian policy towards Chechnya wouldn’t make any sense anyway.

I’m seriously inclined to think that for this kid, it was about loyalty to his brother and some kind of fucked up thrill seeking. Blowing shit up for the sake of blowing shit up, and without any real plan behind it. He should absolutely face the full extent of the law over it, and none of my post should be interpreted as excusing what he did. But he doesn’t sound at all like a radical jihadist to me.

Here’s your radical Islamist jihadist suspect:

Smoked a lot of weed, switched from UMass Boston to UMass Dartmouth to follow the parties, failed his classes at Dartmouth, didn’t have any real set plan for his life except to have fun, talked about his Muslim faith as just a casual thing, etc.

Yeah, he sounds like a real hardcore fundamentalist.

I’m seriously wondering if he got dragged into this whole mess by his older brother and that he went with it out of loyalty and some sort of perverse thrill seeking. That wouldn’t excuse or exonerate him at all, but it would make more sense than anything else I’ve read so far.

That seems to be a likely scenario. The older brother had a reputation for being controlling and manipulative and certainly had the greater interest in practicing Islam. However, as we’ve seen in countless cases (Hamburg cell, Ontario Parliament plot, 7-7 London Bombers, etc) Western educated, children of immigrants can go through a bit of an identity crisis. Disaffected youth often look for an outlet for discontent and a way to connect to their homelands. The bad ass mujahadeen fighters seem threatening and powerful which appeals to young men. I really think Four Lions was spot on. We’ve seen this pattern many times before and it’s no mystery that many terrorists are not very observant muslims but they turn to radical Islam for inspiration for emotional reasons.

My son is only a few years older than the elder brother and he did some spectacularly stupid stuff in his teen years (none of it violent), so when I look at this 19-year-old’s face, the mom in me feels a twinge of pity… then I remember the photos of that guy with both his lower legs blown off, and I think about all the other dead & injured and the pity evaporates. I don’t have that later option. You can’t run the table on my dad like that, he’s too skilled at argumentation to do so. He’ll shift focus to get a discussion going his way, or do the opposite and stick on a point and hammer on it to keep his opposition from charging ahead.

To be fair few people on the other side respect it either, for the same reason. He’s arguing from a position of moral indignation, and as utterly wrong he is on the principles that’s at least a heartfelt position to take. Your position is, at best, a kind of milquetoast acquiescence to undeniable societal change. Until you start to really analyze and internalize the fundamental rights arguments at play (the 14th Amendment and its underpinnings in rational fairness doctrine) you’re going to be arguing from a deliberately weakened position.

Still, it’s good that you’re standing up to him on any level, even if you’re not framing the argument in effective terms you’re at least presenting evidence to an older generation that their bigotry just isn’t persuasive anymore.

No, sorry, that’s still textbook bigotry, irrational and unreasonable opposition to an idea, especially leading to discrimination. It’s also a blatant double standard, even if we ignore the data that shows gay couples raise perfectly well adjusted children, society doesn’t and never has evaluated “traditional” marriages on their comparative capability to produce or raise children. If they did then my Mom’s most recent marriage would have been invalidated on the basis of her total hysterectomy / oophorectomy and his vasectomy. Your Dad is applying a new test for gay marriages only as a hurdle, one that nobody has ever expected straight marriages to clear.

“Its size and location, say Marco, who also took video of the structure during a scuba dive to examine it, indicated it could have been constructed underwater as a type of fish nursery”

A 60,000 ton basalt fish nursery? Maybe a trifle over-engineered.

To be really fair, my dad isn’t arguing from the position of homosexuality being wrong. He was arguing that heterosexual-only marriage ought to be upheld because it provided the best environment for raising children. So he’d be wrong, not so much a bigot.

Ask your dad to find a study that supports that point of view….

(Well maybe not your dad but anybody else advancing that argument)

People who’ve actually killed their children through either neglect or malice don’t have their marriages annulled by the State. Nor are they prevented from marrying again. This whole argument about raising children constitutes a genuine red herring fallacy, totally designed to mislead from the actual issue at hand, the one about rights and equality under the law.

If some RWNJs thought that they could, gay folks wouldn’t have any rights at all.

Why he’s arguing what has been considered settled Constitutional law for decades is beyond me.

Count Vladislaus Dracula: Igor!

Igor: Yes, Master?

Count Vladislaus Dracula: Why do you torment that thing so?

Igor: It’s what I do.

Dignity? What dignity?

I’ve got one on either side of me at the moment. The younger one is wedged into her favorite spot between the arm of my chair and the right side of my body (making it very difficult to type, which I suspect is her intent), and the other is standing on the table to my left, meowing for attention and tap-tap-tapping me on the arm with her paw. Naturally, they’re glaring at each other: “I was here first!” “So?? You’ve been there for 15 minutes, stop hogging all the attention…”

Looks like it might be break time, LOL.

I guess I’ll go drum my fingers on the table at home. Fortunately, I am now able to check Facebook from there…

Later, lizards.

Two are now sprawled in front of the open sliding door in the kitchen, watching cat TV in the backyard, and the third just stalked in that direction.

It is stupidly warm here today. World, I don’t want 80 degrees in April.

IT BEGINS.

Mysterious structure found at bottom of ancient lake.

However[,] archeologists think it more likely it was built on dry land and later submerged by the lake.

I’m betting between 30k and 40K before now.

re: #168 Ipsophakto

Well, this punctures the whole doubt-fog:

FBI and ICE officials returned to the New Bedford, Massachusetts apartment on Saturday and re-arrested the two men who were brought in on Friday.

Maybe an apology to The Mail is in order?

The Mail could go first. It’d take awhile. But seriously, do you have a source for this story? I can’t find it anywhere but Jim Hoft and people echoing him.
