No, Anonymous would not have posted a tweet supporting Assad’s Syrian Army. They’re assholes, but they despise Assad.

American Indians were brought up tonight and comparisons made with Stalin or some nonsense.
I am very impressed with the Indian tribes in Oklahoma. They adapted to the cruel history thrust upon them.
They run all the casinos in the state banking good money for the tribes. They have established a medical insurance program for the tribes.( better than Obama care ) They also have a great program to provide higher education at little cost for the tribes. They protect land and water here and control the conservation of natural resources.
They buy a lot of TV time to tell the stories of the Native tribes. It is so interesting to watch..From the trail of tears to the history of Native tribes in Oklahoma. It is very informative to learn about their history. It’s amazing to see how they have excelled in all facets of life..From the stories of composers to artists and all things in between. A very talented and strong people that inspires us to respect their pride overcoming the hardships and cruelty brought upon them and the ability to overcome such odds against them.
I can’t express the pride and strength they have in Oklahoma.

Here in Hayward, I live next to a rez where they do much of the same. One of the best things they do is they have a public radio station (WOJB, streaming online!) that does much to help white/native relations in this community.

We were driving through the rez lately (it’s a shortcut to my MiL’s cabin) and noted how much better the houses look since our childhood. The fact that there are fire hydrants every few hundred meters along the main road now. The new school (elementary & secondary) buildings. The clinic. The college. Yeah, it’s still not exactly a rich neighborhood, but if you had seen the insane level of grinding poverty that was the rule here in the 70’s? And if you knew that this place was always comparatively rich when compared to places out in the Dakotas or the south-west? Then you might begin to understand how important these things are to the people who live here. They’re moving, slowly, from the fourth world to the first.

All funded by drunk white folks betting against the house in the casino ;)

I’m not big on gambling, but I do get a huge laugh out of how the tribes have used our idiocies to get back at us via our wallets.

Tactical dinner…

Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearm police relax with a meal following the apprehension earlier of the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing on April 19, 2013 in Watertown, Massachusetts. A manhunt for a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, ended this evening with his capture on a boat parked on a residential property in Watertown, Massachusetts. His brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, the other suspect, was shot and killed by police early this morning after a car chase and shootout with police. The two men are suspects in the bombings at the Boston Marathon on April 15 that killed three people and wounded at least 170.

Charles Johnson,

Do these people actually not understand that 60 minutes not only won’t tolerate this, but that when its discovered they’ll get these tweets taken down. Not to mention the fact that people are not going to have their minds changed by this, especially when the news comes out that it wasn’t 60 minutes after all, as it just did. Is this an act of desperation on their part, or just incredible stupidity? I’m going with both.

After veering off into looking at zoning laws for a bit this evening, I bring you an entertaining article about what happens when rich folks suddenly understand why zoning laws are useful:

Now that wide-open approach has come back to haunt Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city and the only major U.S. city without zoning laws to control development. Plans to build a 23-story condominium tower among the million-dollar homes of two stately neighborhoods here has appalled affluent residents and put local politicians in the hot seat.

Angry residents have hired a lawyer to fight their cause. Houston Mayor Bill White has pledged to use “any appropriate power under law” to scale back or cancel the development. The problem is, without zoning laws to regulate land use, the city can do little to thwart the project other than apply traffic restrictions and write sternly worded letters.

A quick Google search shows that the project is still being pursued despite the city’s attempts (an archaic driveway rule and …probably some sternly worded letters) to deny it. Go go free market!

Researching a GGG grandfather whose parentage is unknown, not just to me but to many others who have tried to find out his parents. We know he came from Vermont, and the year in which he was born, but alas the birth records from that time are spotty, when Vermont was an independent nation, the Vermont Republic, and their notable historic accomplishment is that nation outlawed slavery before the United States did.

There’s something to be said for the puritans of Mass. and there obsessive record keeping. Unfortunately the wilds of New England, and Vermont was originally part of that, really were the back woods.

Hidden cost. One of my kids brokers insurance, finding insurers willing to cover large condo units. She would have a great difficulty ($$$) finding insurers for an un-zoned building.

Fox News Sunday is something of an exception. It’s a ‘Flagship Sunday Morning Show’, so insanity isn’t permitted and the host is someone who’ll slap serious nuttery down if a guest engages in it.

Chris Wallace knew what the superintendent meant and probably brushed the word choice off (the word refers to how terrorist groups are thought of as ‘non-state actors’). But Alex Jones and crew will freak out anyways. Which might be good, since it will place them in the position of attacking FNC which FNC has to defend the actual facts against enraged nutters. That might push Jones and co. away from Fox News, which would be better for FNC in the long run.

Not that it will stop the conspiracy folks…

Conspiracy nuts will never never never admit they are wrong. A mountain of evidence to the contrary is just more proof of the sophistication of the cover up and the lengths the conspirators will go to hide their actions.

I used to engage these idiots for fun. There is no point. Now they just make me angry. I’m ashamed to admit that it took being on Boylston street minutes before the explosions to change my mind. I once thought they we almost charming in a harmless eccentric uncle sort of fashion. Now I tell them that they are just stupid fools and STFU.

My mother used canned cherry pie filling, but also never did just a straight cherry pie. It was a recipe that in-family was referred to as “yucky cherry cream pie” since my sister apparently called it that once. I loved it though.

However, since I’m pretty sure it’s not kosher I don’t think you have that as an alternative. Not sure what the “cream pie” part was constructed of, though my current guess would be that it involved condensed milk.

It’s next to impossible to get fresh sour cherries for pie, you have to use either canned or frozen cherries. Last year’s Michigan cherry crop was wiped out by a false start of spring.

Sour cherries do not ship well, so they have to be processed on site either canned or frozen.

That false start devastated apple crops here in Illinois as well. Last year just wasn’t good for growing things in the Midwest. This year looks to be better.

I was lucky in having a mature cherry tree already in place when I bought the house in western PA. Had a few bumper crops off of it* before a severe thunderstorm dumped a six inch diameter 30’ long tree limb right onto it. Though I generally made cobbler with the cherries rather than pie.

* - I would be on a step ladder picking cherries. At the same time there would be 3-4 birds, 2 squirrels, and lots of insects in the same tree. And we just ignored each other since there were plenty of cherries to go ‘round.

Was in my “The New Best Recipe” cookbook looking for something and came across their cherry cobbler recipe.

A couple of interesting items there in the development paragraphs for the recipe:
1. They used jarred sour cherries from Trader Joe’s. (both Morello and Montmorency types in the final recipe.)

2. A cinnamon stick and a cup of dry red wine went into the filling (13x9 pan for the recipe)

I originally gave her a pass on the theory that her sons were being framed. It’s easy to see how a mother in denial would fall back on something like that but it seems she’s had this delusional belief in conspiracies for quite some time. Everyone does that. Whenever you use value judgments you’re doing that to some extent. In most people’s writing or speaking words mean “bad” or “good” more often than they’re meant to really convey information.

Language as manipulation of other people is more common than language as information.

I’m reminded of a Pakistani ex-Muslim who told me that his experience with his family back home was that people would say that they supported the 9/11 attacks if it looked like you’d agree with them, but if you questioned the morality of it, they’d fall back on saying that it was a conspiracy and that no Muslims were involved.

He found it baffling, which, I suppose is why he couldn’t fit in. He had a mind that was built for logic not hatred and evasion of responsibility.
