CNN President Zucker Congratulates Staff on “Exceptional Work”

Fail? What fail?
Media • Views: 34,885

Wow. Talk about being completely disconnected from reality.

CNN was roundly slammed for their coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings — reporting unsubstantiated rumors as confirmed facts, saying the suspect was a “dark-skinned male,” basically getting almost everything wrong in their rush to be first out of the gate.

But CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker thinks they did a bang-up job!

Zucker’s memo to staff:

What a week.

As events unfolded in Boston, and then in Texas, and as they continue to unfold at this very moment in both places, CNN has been there for our audience in every possible way - on television, online and on our mobile platforms. As Wolf would say, that was true for our audiences here in the United States and around the world. For journalists like each of us, these are the times that define what we do and why we do it. All of you, across every division of CNN Worldwide, have done exceptional work. And when we made a mistake, we moved quickly to acknowledge it and correct it. It was important to see CNN, cnn.com, HLN and CNNI all shine this week, often with different stories and different approaches that make each of their roles clear. It is a week that began with a whole new genre of programming for CNN, with the successful premiere of Parts Unknown. Now, as the week comes to a close, I wanted to express my deep gratitude and admiration. You have worked tirelessly, around the clock, to share these stories. And our audiences have responded, making it clear that they rely on us in ever increasing ways. In front of the cameras and behind the scenes, you have shown the world what makes us CNN.

With my thanks and appreciation,

JEFF

This is me, gobsmacked.

He’s looking at dollar signs. Either their advertising goals have been met or the stock price is something he is happy about.

Because, you know, if they are making money, they must be doing a good job. #1 myth of capitalism.

My prediction is that in 5 years CNN will no longer be a “news” channel, just as TLC stopped being a “learning” channel, A&E stopped being an “art” channel, and AMC stopped being a “movie” channel. Any channel that’s just initials can make the switch pretty easy.

Hell, even the History Channel gave up on history and they still keep the word in their name.

I stopped watching CNN when they starting to treat Sarah Palin facebook posts as BREAKING NEWS.

They have been a complete disaster for a few years now. During the health care debate rather than inform their audience about the bill they decided to just cover the politics of it. That was the last straw with me.

25 FemNaziBitch  Sun, Apr 21, 2013 12:01:18pm

Very cool!

The singing of “Sweet Caroline” has been a pretty well-known eighth-inning ritual at Fenway since 2002. According to MLB.com’s Jason Mastrodonato, Diamond flew to Boston on his own initiative, called the Fenway folks when he arrived at 12:30 pm, and said, “Hey, I’m here. Can I come sing?” Neil Diamond did this, of course, because he has spent his whole life writing songs about the healing power of love, but up until yesterday, they’ve only been words. Saturday’s Red Sox game, was his chance to prove that those words really mean something. (Also, the Red Sox won, because how could the universe not give the city at least a little something to smile and cheer for after putting it through such an awful week?) [THR]

tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com

Brigitte Gabriel never gave this quote to a reporter with the Australian Jewish News. It is a fabrication. Ms. Gabriel does not believe “every practicing Muslim is a radical Muslim.”
This fabrication has been perpetuated without factual basis for awhile now, and other media outlets have not done their due diligence to determine the veracity of the quote. As previously stated, the group is against radical Islam, not the religion as a whole—as confirmed by Brigitte’s numerous other public statements and support from some moderate Muslims. We ask that you show journalistic integrity and avoid continuing this falsehood which is not backed up by original sources, tape recordings or other evidence.

Charles, do you know anyone else who has false quotes used to smear them?

Brigitte Gabriel Draws Crowds in U.S. With Anti-Islam Message

“America has been infiltrated on all levels by radicals who wish to harm America,” she said. “They have infiltrated us at the C.I.A., at the F.B.I., at the Pentagon, at the State Department. They are being radicalized in radical mosques in our cities and communities within the United States.”

[…]

She insists that she is singling out only “radical Islam” or Muslim “extremists” — not the vast majority of Muslims or their faith. And yet, in her speeches and her two books, she leaves the opposite impression. She puts it most simply in the 2008 introduction to her first book, “Because They Hate: A Survivor of Islamic Terror Warns America.”

“In the Muslim world, extreme is mainstream,” she wrote. She said that there is a “cancer” infecting the world, and said: “The cancer is called Islamofacism. This ideology is coming out of one source: The Koran.”

Brigitte Gabriel is a rabid hateful person, spreading fear and bigotry. What’s wrong with you that you would defend someone like this?

More quotes from this hater:

“The difference, my friends, between Israel and the Arabic world is quite simply the difference between civilization and barbarism. It’s the difference between good and evil and this is what we’re witnessing in the Arab and Islamic world. I am angry. They have no soul! They are dead set on killing and destruction.

— From a speech delivered to the Rev. John Hagee’s Christians United for Israel Convention, July 2007

“Tens of thousands of Islamic militants now reside in America, operating in sleeper cells, attending our colleges and universities, even infiltrating our government. They are here — today. Many have been here for years. Waiting. Preparing.”

You might want to characterise what she said as “Arabs are barbarians”, but that would be a lie and out of context. She is clearly comparing and contrasting them to the democracy and freedom in Israel.

There’s considerable evidence that Brigitte Gabriel is exaggerating and/or making up her life story, to sell her Islamophobic garbage to the rubes.

Sure, she is not really an Arab Christian from Lebanon who lived through the Lebanese Civil War.

Sigh.

Let me know the title of your book that made The New York Times hardcover best seller list. I would, like to read it.

Interesting criteria by which to gauge expertise. By this measure of yours Jimmy Carter would be rated quite the expert on the relationship between Israel and Palestine.

The book was published Nov. 14 by Simon & Schuster. It is at No. 7 on The New York Times’s best-seller list, and has sold more than 68,000 copies, according to Nielsen BookScan, which measures 60 to 70 percent of a book’s sales.

My prediction is that in 5 years CNN will no longer be a “news” channel, just as TLC stopped being a “learning” channel, A&E stopped being an “art” channel, and AMC stopped being a “movie” channel. Any channel that’s just initials can make the switch pretty easy.

I certainly think that Jimmy has established himself as an expert in Middle East politics. I also think he is an anti semite.

However the Democratic Party has no problem with him being a featured speaker at their very recent convention and having President Obama share a stage with him.

Lebanese Civil War

The Lebanese Civil War (Arabic: الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية‎) was a multifaceted civil war in Lebanon, lasting from 1975 to 1990 and resulting in an estimated 120,000 fatalities. Today approximately 76,000 people remain displaced within Lebanon. There was also a mass exodus of almost one million people from Lebanon.

So 76,000 people remain displaced in Lebanon directly because of the war. Another million people left Lebanon during the war and went elsewhere.

What makes this one woman, who doesn’t even use her real name and who has no formal education in politics, or history, or anything relevant to the Middle East, or Islam, a supposed expert on Muslims?

re: #107 Eclectic Cyborg

Buck does bring up an interesting point: How exactly is one rightfully considered an “expert”?

- A degree in the topic at hand?
- Lengthy, in-depth real life experiences with said topic?
- Long and thorough in depth research on said topic?
- All of the above?

1) Degree on topic does indicate expertise.
2) In-depth real life experience? Well, for some Islamophobes, the experience of 9/11 is all they claim is necessary for expert opinion, and that it trumps everything else.
3) Research? What’s that?

Lebanese Civil War

So 76,000 people remain displaced in Lebanon directly because of the war. Another million people left Lebanon during the war and went elsewhere.

What makes this one woman, who doesn’t even use her real name and who has no formal education in politics, or history, or anything relevant to the Middle East, or Islam, a supposed expert on Muslims?

It’s a simple question. What makes her so special that I should give a shit what she has to say?

Absolutely right on. Yellowstone is our favorite as well. Yosemite is awesome in its own right, but Yellowstone has more wildlife and more varied terrain than nearly every other national park combined (or so it seems).

The crowds weren’t bad at all - and we experienced all 4 seasons there - one day it went from sunny and the 70s to rain, sleet, snow, and fog/snow within 24 hours (and that was at both Wawona and the Valley at 4k feet - not just at elevation).

We also managed to get to Hetch Hetchy, and did only a little bit of the hiking - because of said weather issues. Also hiked just past the Vernal Falls footbridge (the Mist Trail was closed due to ice/rockfall), Mirror Lake, and most of the other major stops in and around the valley. Even took a few nighttime shots of the valley - and have to see if they came out.

My husband is a brilliant man and proposed after we had watched a nighttime eruption of Old Faithful. I go to Yellowstone and spend 12 hour days just out watching geysers erupt (I’ve scored most of the regular major ones except for Fan and Mortar, which has been a giant tease twice).

Yosemite in the winter/spring is gorgeous and I love it - I’ve seen snow on the valley floor, a lynx there, and snowshoed in to one of the giant sequoia groves - but it still can’t beat Yellowstone. :)

I do look forward to more pictures though!

Not to mention that there’s a seriously good chance McCarthy’s son was never autistic in the first place. He’s supposedly “cured” now, but the kid had a seizure disorder as a young toddler,of course his development was delayed, the poor little guy was fighting just to hang on while he seized all the time. Once the seizures were under control his development caught up to his age. There is no cure for autism, it’s not a disease. If she had just stuck with the stress and strain it caused to her marriage and the resulting divorce, she would have actually had a decent perspective. But she lost her damned mind and used that shit to make money. Over and over in that book she talked about “fixing” her son. He’s not broken, and implying autism makes you broken just about made be book a flight to find her and smack her right in the ovaries.

It was that show that sent McCarthy onto the bestseller lists, interviews all over TV and it gave her credence in the media and among families of autistic children. I lost friends and I am STILL arguing with my MIL over that stupid idiot woman’s snake oil shit.

I totally understand the fear and panic you feel when you realize something is not right with your child and the need to know precisely what’s wrong and if there’s anything you can do to help. Hell, I’ve been working with the autism spectrum diagnosis for nearly 15 yrs now and I STILL sometimes have anxiety attacks about the future and my son’s place in this world. Maybe you don’t know Brigitte Gabriel’s background?

buck has the self-confidence of those who feel they can assert without proof and make up opinions to put in other people’s mouths

his defense against his own thoughtlessness in regard to accuracy is usually “i think you made a mistake once yourself”

Seeking input: what is a reasonable number of coffee mugs for a married couple to own, one of whom drinks tea regularly and the other of which has a hot beverage about once every three months? Allowances for the occasional houseguest but we never entertain.

Contemplate the thrift shops—all the coffee mugs that ever need be made have been made.

I have six at the shop for myself to drink tea about three times a day.

That’s way too many. They don’t fit in the sink all at once.

The number of mugs either advertising a computer product or referencing how fucking things up takes a computer is fairly high. I’m pretty certain the floral ones were inherited from the previous homeowner (!!!), much like the ‘china’ comes from a previous housemate.

It’s not really more than a flavor difference. You still get the same rewards in the end.

Umm, they looked like dark-skinned males to me. There are variations of what that means, you know. My mother and one of my brothers are caucasian, but are also dark-skinned. A few days ago you mentioned that they looked like a couple of white kids. They didn’t look like that to me. So, that characterization was not so off the mark as you think.

We have about 20 after the move. I use one for my daily pot of coffee and the Boss uses another for coffee each day. She has one for Tea as well. So we actually use 3 of those 20.

I had another one that I used all the time but it broke so I moved to the one I currently use. I probably won’t use another till it gets broken as well.

If we weren’t likely to sell in a year or two, we would be redoing the kitchen. Original to the house, house was built in the early 60s. Instead, we’ll probably settle for redoing the wiring (I dream of 3-prong outlets).

re: #247 William Barnett-Lewis

Maybe 10-15 then? I want at least some of these to go to Goodwill. I have 2 that I want to keep. The plastic ones will go to the teardrop.

Seriously, I’d say a half dozen beyond the ones you use. Put at least a half dozen in the teardrop, though. Big old cafeteria/mess hall ceramic ones are better than plastic though; much more comfortable to hold when sipping irish coffee while camping :)

Haha, the problem with the teardrop is vibration. As we discovered to our chagrin, involving a pop-top can of chicken noodle soup with another can on top.

So it gets plastic.

Good thing we’re building a new house out back.

I am desperate for a new kitchen. Would be very happy to build my own. Was reading last night about this kitchen where they had pull out drawers with plugs in the back so they didn’t have to move around the counter appliances but could still have them out of sight, and a giant island, and a minifridge for drinks and two ovens (I’ll settle for one with a reliable thermostat) and and and…

Yeah. Kitchen porn.

I found enough space in the cabinet that we can do the 6 on the mug tree and store another 10 or so on the top shelf where they won’t irritate me as much (mostly because I will not be able to reach that space anyway and so it won’t be taking useful space).

I foresee a Goodwill trip in the near future.

I do remember what you said right after 9/11 about the terrorists that committed that crime.

I wont repeat it out of context, but you were talking about muslim terrorists. Just like she is.

Direct quote:

The difference, my friends, between Israel and the Arab world is the difference between civilization and barbarism. It’s the difference between good and evil [applause]…. this is what we’re witnessing in the Arabic world, They have no soul, they are dead set on killing and destruction.

277 Buck  Mon, Apr 22, 2013 5:11:41pm

You should know, better than almost anyone how a sentence can be pulled out of context, edited and used to twist what was actually said.

If it were true, and she felt the way you are saying, then there would be a lot more to quote.

As I have explained, she is clearly talking about the totalitarian leaders of the Arab countries, in contrast to the Liberal Democracy of Israel. I remind you again that she is an Arab, and her entire family is Arab. In that speech, the subject she was addressing was the Palestinian terrorists who were terrorising civilians in Israel. She was talking about the people who follow the perverted form of Islamic fundamentalism. Just like you were when you said:

There’s no better evidence of the horribly dysfunctional nature of Islamic fundamentalism. No empathy, no love, no compassion, no respect for life, no future.

littlegreenfootballs.com

Yes, it is not exactly the same, but similar.

I was talking about how Palestinian mothers are encouraging their children to go out and blow themselves up to smithereens just to kill Christians and Jews. And it was in that context that I - that I contrasted the difference between Israel and the Arabic world, was the difference between democracy and barbarism.

— CNN.com Transcripts (2011-03-08). “Brigitte Gabriel’s Anti-Islam Message on Radical Muslims”.

Just to clear when you infer that she said “Arabs have no souls and they’re all murderers,” and even place quotes around it to make it seem like an actual quotation you are taking a sentence out of context, editing it and using it to twist what she actually said. She didn’t shout something from the side of a room. She was making a speech and it contained a lot of context.

re: #276 Charles Johnson

I will add this. If you don’t want me here, all you need to do is tell me so. You do not need to ban me.

I have been here for a long time. However I do not stay where I am not wanted. You want me to leave and never come back, all you need is to do is say so. This is your house. I have always respected that.
