Boston Bombing Updates: Chechen Terrorist Group Denies Involvement

The investigation focuses on Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s trip to Russia
US News • Views: 33,370

The latest story from the Associated Press has new information on Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s trip to Russia in 2012.

Investigators are now focusing on the trip that Tsarnaev made to Russia in January 2012 that has raised many questions. His father said his son stayed with him in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, where the family lived briefly before moving to the U.S. a decade ago. The father had only recently returned.

“He was here, with me in Makhachkala,” Anzor Tsarnaev told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “He slept until 3 p.m., and you know, I would ask him: ‘Have you come here to sleep?’ He used to go visiting, here and there. He would go to eat somewhere. Then he would come back and go to bed.”

[…]

A woman who works in a small shop opposite Tsarnaev’s apartment building said she only saw his son during the course of one month last summer. She described him as a dandy.

“He dressed in a very refined way,” Madina Abdullaeva said. “His boots were the same color as his clothes. They were summer boots, light, with little holes punched in the leather.”

Anzor Tsarnaev said they also traveled to neighboring Chechnya. “He went with me twice, to see my uncles and aunts. I have lots of them,” the father said.

He said they also visited one of his daughters, who lives in the Chechen town of Urus-Martan with her husband. His son-in-law’s brothers all work in the police force under Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, he said.

AP also reports that one of the known terrorist organizations in the region has denied responsibility for the attack:

No evidence has emerged since to link Tamerlan Tsarnaev to militant groups in Russia’s Caucasus. On Sunday, the Caucasus Emirate, which Russia and the U.S. consider a terrorist organization, denied involvement in the Boston attack.

I remember when Chechens were freedom fighters standing up against Russian occupation forces…now they are just filthy terrorists.

Putin is happy to have them seen that way by the USA now.

Yeah, these two assholes now linked Chechnya with Terrorism in some— probably too many— US minds.

That these guys weren’t suicide bombers and apparently didn’t have a viable escape plan leads me to suspect that the older brother was a self-radicalized malcontent who sucked his younger brother into it.

IMO, and others have said it already, self-radicalization is even more worrisome than organized, planned attacks.

Whatever the case, it’s all so damned selfish, stupid, and senseless.

As I said before, it makes no sense for a group like this to deny responsibility if they did it, and Chechen terrorists have never been shy about it before. They want people to know it’s them.

Hopefully, that damage can be fixed. The Chechens (and many of their neighbors) have very legitimate gripes with Russia, and reasons to leave.

Seccession, in my view, is really only reasonable when the nationalities in question have been persecuted to the point where they have no reason to trust the Government.

This also applies to Kosovo, the Presevo Valley, and Vojvodina in Serbia, among others.

I don’t know if it’s that it’ll damage their brand, or if it’ll spawn a wave of drones over their heads that they’d rather not deal with.

Heh, from an email I sent to a friend earlier in the week WRT to lack of claims of responsibility from overseas groups:

Jihadis overseas are probably going, “It wasn’t us, so everybody STFU. Especially you, Ahmed—I mean it—NOT ONE FUCKING PEEP. We don’t need the wrath of Obama raining drone strikes down on us.”

I think you are right. The only thing that makes me still wonder though is if its true they were fairly well stocked, where did they get all that. Does someone need training to build the type of bombs they had or can one really google it? Btw even if they did find themselves training and some supplies it still is, imo, a self initiated act of an ideological older brother and a psychologically and spiritually empty younger brother.

Yeah, when none of the usual suspects or even virtually unknown (in the US) groups jumped up to claim credit, it made it hard to believe this was a planned attack. This has all the flavor of a thrill kill where the culprits happen to be Muslims.

In that sense, I think the drone strikes have been a net positive for the US. They serve as an effective deterrent for terrorists who would otherwise feel free to attack whomever they want, whenever they want, because even the US isn’t stupid enough to start another world war just for some puny terrorists. But a drone strike? That’s a game-changer.

What klys said. Pressure cooker bombs have been around for decades:

Knowledge of pressure-cooker bombs is not limited to readers of al-Qaeda’s ‘Inspire’ magazine

24 abolitionist  Sun, Apr 21, 2013 4:47:24pm

Reported yesterday:
Uncle: Mentors ‘radicalized’ older Boston bombing suspect Excerpts:

Tsarni, a Maryland resident who is the brother of the suspects’ father, believes Tamerlan, 26, who died in a confrontation with police early Friday morning, was radicalized by others. He noted that the suspects were in his house as children, and recalled a surprising transformation the last time he saw Tamerlan in 2009.

Another:

“He said there is someone who brainwashed him, some new convert to Islam,’’ Tsarni said. “I would like to stress (the acquaintance was) of Armenian descent.’’

The suspects’ uncle believes the radicalization occurred in the United States, not overseas. Tamerlan Tsarnaev traveled to Russia last year.

“It has nothing to do with Russia, (or) with Chechnya, which he had nothing to do with,’’ Tsarni said. “It started here.”

The reference to an acquaintance of Armenian descent is credible to me, personally. In the mid-1960s, I’d been dating a HS classmate who claimed to be Armenian. Got a phone call one day from a brother of hers, who insisted that I either break off all contact with her, OR convert (to islam).

If I could discount the death threats (and I pretty much did at the time) I could be inclined to say that my introduction to islam was near-perfectly impersonal and unbiased. Such was my motivation for reading the koran.

I’d never met the brother in person, so far as I know, but it was obvious to me that he was a fanatic, even then —before the ‘67 war in the ME.

While my gut feeling is that Tamerlan got Dzhokhar involved in all of this, the fact is that Dzhokhar seems to have continued of his own volition, even after Tamerlan was dead. For that, if he is found guilty in a court of law, Dzhokhar should spend the rest of his life in a prison like ADX Florence.

However, once the kid is able to talk (and he’s properly advised of his Miranda rights), the Feds and MA cops need to be pumping him for as much info, just in case he and Tamerlan (especially Tamerlan) had “friends”.

You know why they say this, right? Because the Scary Union Cops and Obummer’s ATF Army got the brothers wrapped up relatively quickly and with (relatively) little collateral damage; they’re pissed that civilian posses armed with AR15s and Glocks didn’t find them first and hang them from the nearest tree.

Speaking of The Anarchist’s Cookbook, I was watching a report on NBC the other day and there was a former ATF Special Agent on who said that back in the 70’s they, along with the 3M corporation, had developed microscopic “taggants” that would allow law enforcement to easily track down the source of things like “black powder”. Apparently, that wasn’t the type of explosive used in this instance, but still.

The ATF tried to get a bill through Congress to allow taggants to be widely used, but guess who blocked it? Yep, the NRA.

The science involved (not to mention the costs and other possible hazards) is way over my head, but I got curious about what I’d heard and went on a Google hunt for confirmation of what the ATF agent had said. Sure enough, I found the PDF below on the National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) website. The ATF’s statement begins on page 20, the NRA’s on page 57:

Omnibus Antiterrorism Act of 1979

He and Jezebel are hard-core fundies and major figures in an anti-gay hate group up there. It seems to be a law of nature, or un-nature, that bestiality will enter the conversation anytime a fundy talks about sexual morality. re: #5 Charles Johnson

As I said before, it makes no sense for a group like this to deny responsibility if they did it, and Chechen terrorists have never been shy about it before. They want people to know it’s them.

If anything, terror groups will sometimes claim credit for attacks they didn’t commit, because they want to be seen as doing them (for all the “glory” and recruitment advantages the terror leaders’ think it brings). Happens quite frequently with the various Palestinian terror groups, though to much lesser extent once Israel responded with taking out the actual leadership cadre and not only going after the minions who carry out the attacks.

That this Chechen terror group is denying any involvement suggests that they really aren’t involved. Can’t discount that they might be trying to shield those who are, but when you balance the fact that the US would have no problem with Russia going to town on them if there is a connection, they’d rather cooperate and point the way to who might be involved (if there’s even any kind of overseas - conspiracy component to this - and that’s not clear) to avoid having the US get cooperation and drone a bunch of terror masters in Chechnya and neighboring areas.

As though a funeral weren’t unpleasant enough already, my brother “Judas” and his wife (my ex-wife) “Jezebel” showed up in Wyoming. They displayed their customary concern for decency; that is, they acted like fools. It happens that they live in the Boston area. Judas held forth like an eyewitness to the bombing even though they were 40 miles away at the time.
He and Jezebel are hard-core fundies and major figures in an anti-gay hate group up there. They advanced the theory that the brothers Tzarnaev are actually gay activists since it is well-known that Muslims approve of homosexuality and sex with animals, ie the usual fundy bullshit. It seems to be a law of nature, or un-nature, that bestiality will enter the conversation anytime a fundy talks about sexual morality. I simply remarked, “On the plus side, they have been observed to stone adulterers to death from time to time.”
They both glared at me under their guilt-ridden brows but said no more.

Yes gay activists like to blow things up—with glitter bombs…

Congrats on not losing your cool.

Best to your wife.

In their fever dreams, they see themselves in the hunted ‘resistance’.

I notice that they’re bitching about Boston getting more news coverage than West, Texas’ fertilizer explosion.

The freepers probably won’t enjoy getting more coverage of West.

I don’t know if it’s that it’ll damage their brand, or if it’ll spawn a wave of drones over their heads that they’d rather not deal with.

I know I am playing too much Heart of the Swarm when I see “spawn a wave of drones” and all I can think is… “Who attacks with drones? You should use hydralisks instead!”

The whole West incident is a textbook case of why government regulation exists and is good for particular areas, and what happens when you ignore/violate regulations and underfund government such that they cannot keep up.

Boston is a weak, emasculated city, dependent on the unionized, militarized, ego inflated police.

Yeah. I seriously doubt that the judge will allow any defense of “my brother made me do it.” Dzhokhar is 19 years old and responsible for his actions as a co-actor in this act of terror.

That’s true; while Tamerlan might have sucked Dzhokhar into this with him, Dzhokhar is an adult and should be treated as such by the justice system.

Given what we’ve heard about him, I doubt that Dzhokhar’s lawyers are going to be able to use a “diminished capacity” defense either.

Dzhokhar is fucked and rightfully so.

Bible a ‘copy’ of Quran, Boston bombing suspect told neighbour

Al Ammon, whose apartment is in the same building in the Boston suburb of Watertown where Tamerlan Tsarnaev once lived, told CBS television’s ” 60 Minutes” that the dispute between the two took place about three months ago.

“I remember the first thing I said to him was that it’s always good to have an open mind towards other religions. And then he went into the Bible and the Quran,” Ammon said in an excerpt of an interview set to air later Sunday.

“He was explaining how the Bible is actually a copy of the Quran and how it’s used for the American government as an excuse to invade other countries.”

I don’t think anyone with a lick of sense would accept that as a defense. There is no excusing what they did, but it might be helpful to know exactly how the elder brother sucked him in, if that is indeed what happened.

And if Tamerlan had outside help, connections, or training.

Okay, I’ve officially reduced a pot of salted water (for pasta) to a white crust on the bottom of said pot not once, but twice.

I guess that’s an indicator that I should step away from the keyboard until the pasta is actually cooked this time. You guys try not to say anything terribly witty or interesting for the next 15-20 minutes or so, mkay?

I’m not sure there’s much of a defense that he can make, other than perhaps some fucked up “You got the wrong guy!” bit, arguing that he never set the bombs, his brother did, so he’s nothing more than an accomplice.

His lawyers will likely try some variation of diminished mental capacity, but they’ll also be trying to work out a deal so that he doesn’t face the death penalty under federal law. Life in Supermax in exchange for all the details about the attack, the planning, and whether they had any outside help.

I’d also expect him to try and blame as much of the carnage on his brother, but the fact that he ran and didn’t give himself up immediately also seems to cut against the claim that he was a bystander or not deeply involved in the plot. On that basis, the diminished capacity or accomplice-type defenses fall short.

And, perhaps most importantly, because he was involved in the commission of various felonies, some of which resulted in homicides, he’s facing felony-murder, regardless of whether he was the one to pull the trigger or not.

It was kind of a spur of the moment thing, and it turned out all right - we sat up in the upper deck area down the left field line, great cheap seats, and the fans around there were hilarious. Lots of fun banter going on.

I must say tho’ that of all the ballparks I’ve been to, I’ve never seen a fan base come to a game with as much team gear. It seemed like 80-90% of the fans were in Giants gear. Pretty impressive. The rabid fans definitely made the park experience more fun. Fireworks after the game didn’t hurt either.

At a minimum under federal law, he’s looking at a whole range of charges under 18 USC Chapter 113B. In particular, Section 2332a, dealing with use of weapons of mass destruction (the generic term Congress gave to devices including explosives), Section 2332f, use against public places, etc.

The max sentence on those two charges alone is the death penalty. Add to that all the other lesser included charges, and a life sentence is the best he could hope for.

[added addendum]: Failing to tell authorities of his brother’s plot? That’s chargeable under Sec. 2339, and up to 10 years in prison.

I remember when Chechens were freedom fighters standing up against Russian occupation forces…now they are just filthy terrorists.

Putin is happy to have them seen that way by the USA now.

I understand why they sided with Al Qaeda: Bin Laden offered small amounts of practical aid when no one else would. But groups that had allied with Al Qaeda became intolerable after 9/11 and rightly so. Thus American opinion turned against them. It’s not going to turn back.

The thing is, from the street, you couldn’t see the sinkhole…a 25-30 foot-deep sinkhole.

I don’t think these men could build these bombs without training. Historically bomb makers without someone to teach them blow themselves up, or at least lose a finger.

This sounds more like fictional trope than fact. The components of a black powder equivalent bomb are easy to acquire and assemble, everything necessary from the powder to the electronic matches or fuses can be ordered over the internet. There’s no need for an unstable booster explosive and bp equivalent propellants like Pyrodex are incredibly heat and shock insensitive. The electronic match is common to model rocketry and can be easily tested independent of the assembled bomb. Also using an electronic match totally avoids the one common fatal mistake made in creating this kind of device, as there’s no fuse hole to drill.

I have some toy soldiers and scale model tanks I use to act out the UN occupation of Lubbock. Unfortunately, there are no T-90s, Challengers, or Abrams in my inventory, so I have equipped the invaders with a couple of Shermans, a Panzer IV, a Tiger, a Crusader, and even a Renault FT-17. There is an M-3 halftrack and an M-113 for the UN infantry. Still, this should be more than a match for the armor the Lubbockites can muster, which consists of a single Cadillac-Gage Commando.

That would point to these two having done their homework, figuring out how to build a bomb without blowing themselves up. They seem more like Eric Robert Rudolph or the Unabomber than suicide bombers to me, an idea I got from Daniel Foster.

I’m back. I flew to Wyoming yesterday for my stepmother’s funeral. My mother-in-law’s funeral will be tomorrow here in Lubbock. This will be the tough one for my daughter.

6 Mysterious People at the Heart of Unsolvable Mysteries:

Captain Charles Johnson, the Pirate Biographer

Not many people can claim the title “pirate biographer,” but Captain Charles Johnson certainly meets the criteria. His 1724 book, which bears the truly spectacular title A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates, has become the definitive reference guide for pirate culture in the 17th and 18th century Caribbean. His writings influenced pretty much every famous pirate character in history, from Long John Silver to Jack Sparrow. If you close your eyes right now and picture a pirate, Charles Johnson is responsible for the image in your mind.

And not only does nobody know who he was, but nobody is even sure if any of the shit he wrote was actually true.

Charles Johnson makes it very clear on the cover of Notorious Pirates that he is a pirate captain, and the book’s text maintains this assertion throughout. In a time when fake biographies were circulating the world like counterfeit postage stamps, his was the first authentic account of daily pirate life that anyone had ever seen (in the book’s bizarre third-person introduction, Captain Johnson more or less dares anyone reading to call him a liar). And he provides stories, anecdotes, and insights that only someone with firsthand experience would be able to relate. He even had candid woodcuts of piratical life — the lonely sea captain equivalent of photographic evidence.

The problem is that there were no pirates named Charles Johnson operating during that time period. Also, and perhaps more incriminating, there’s the fact that virtually no pirate in the history of time had any kind of higher education. Illiteracy was so emphatically the norm among pirate crews that we are surprised none of them used pictographs to label their booty, and yet whoever was responsible for Johnson’s book clearly knew how to read and write.

ARRRR!
