The 11 Most Mystifying Things the Tsarnaev Brothers Did

On Monday, it became official: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was charged with “use of a weapon of mass destruction” and “malicious destruction of property resulting in death,” for his alleged role in last Monday’s bombing of the Boston marathon. The federal criminal complaint comes three days after police captured Tsarnaev in a boat in Watertown, Mass., and four days after a manhunt for these specific suspects began in earnest. For the time being, law enforcement officials believe Dzhokhar and his older brother, Tamerlan, who was killed Friday, acted alone.

Dzhokar and Tamerlan’s motive—or motives—are is still unclear. But that’s not the only unknown. Many of the Tsarnaevs’ actions last week seem baffling in retrospect. Here are some of the most confounding things they did:

  1. Wear a backwards hat and no sunglasses.
  2. Not react to the explosions.
  3. Leave the car in the shop.
  4. Stay in Boston.
  5. Kill an MIT police officer.
  6. Run out of cash.
  7. Not understand how ATMs work.
  8. Confess to the hostage.
  9. Stop for snacks.
  10. Keep the hostage's phone.
  11. Bring a BB gun.

Wild speculation: Could the younger brother have killed the older one as part of a plan to leave no trail as he continued the plan? Or murder-attempted suicide, as his neck wound may have been self-inflicted?
Poor planning is always a possibility as well.

I think he ran over his brother in a frantic scramble to escape. Finding a tarp-covered boat in somebody’s back yard to hide in was just a lucky break, I doubt they had the neighborhood scouted.

Their goal was to die . Capture did not matter , that would have ended in suicide . The amount of additional bombs indicates that they were not finished , their plan had gone awry -they did not get the chance to finish , their entire plan was not consumated . I dont think the younger brother was ready to die .

This reminds me of the incompetent school bomber who attacked my son’s high school. He had apparently built up some grandiose dream of blowing up parts of the school and killing people with a chain saw, only to find his poorly constructed bombs barely scorched the linoleum and his chain saw wouldn’t start, and it was so heavy that nobody had any difficulty getting away from him. In the end he was tackled by the Principal and a teacher.

Luckily he was even more of a fuckup than these two.

Tamerlin (aka Tamer the Lame) my have been as dumb as a box of hammers, but the kid was on a scholarship (awarded by his community) to attend UMass Dartmouth. Not a dimwit. A romantic naive kid, but not dumb. Still can’t imagine why he went along with the plan, but as The Boss wrote in Nebraska “man turns his back on his brother, he ain’t no friend of mine”.

Not an endorsement, just an observation.

I think one thing that has to be considered is the level to which either of them felt isolated and uncared about. I suspect that the common denominator for most of these people is how much they felt nobody gave a shit.

Youtube a video of the explosion and notice the JDAM missle striking the building, which is what caused it to explode. McVeigh did not express remorse when hearing the testimony of what happened to the victims of the Murrah bombing at all.

Nichols twisted and turned and tried to play on the emotions of people as a father.

This is a young man and it is natural, especially as a parent, to shake your head in some kind of sympathy. I just visualize the pic of him leaving the bomb near the 8 year old victim.

Really a trial or not doesn’t bring any satisfaction to anybody. It takes time.

Yeah, but too frequently science classes in high school get bogged down on the material and don’t focus on how it was arrived at or its application and exploration in the real world. And in a lot of places there’s no serious discussion of science before middle school at the earliest. So you end up with classes attempting go through at least the bare bones of biology, chemistry, and physics (and physics without calculus is really just cruel, because it turns into a ton of memorization because you don’t have the tools to derive formulas) and there’s no real appreciation of how this knowledge all came to be. At least in most places.

In English classes, there’s at least room to mention things like critical thinking when discussing the assigned reading. (Full disclosure: I spent most of senior year English class discussing Harry Potter fanfiction with my seatmate. But my English teacher that year left a lot to be desired.)

Yeah, I’m going to go with the rocks explanation. :) And to be clear, my comment above was based off my knowledge of more general high school classes in the US and my memory of physics pre-calculus (it all made so much more sense afterwards), which I probably only made it through because the teacher was pretty darn awesome.

(We got to build pinhole cameras! As a combined tech/CAD/physics project. And then the junior chemistry class developed the photos. I think I still have the camera somewhere.)

OT, it’s been an aggravating few days here at the Cyborg homestead thanks to two stray dogs that have apparently decided my property is their new home. I was cleaning yesterday and I tossed a nearly empty bag of dog food outside for a few minutes before I took it to the garbage bin. I guess the strays found it, ate the few scraps of food that was in it and decided to hang around.

I kicked them off the property several times (even using a rifle to scare them off once) but they kept coming back. This morning when I went to get my work clothes out of the dryer I found both of the dogs sleeping in my laundry room (it’s outside, not attached to the house). I promptly kicked them out and locked the door.

As if that weren’t bad enough, they killed one of my chickens (which had escaped the fence) for apparently no good reason adding even more to an already hectic day yesterday.

I thought they were gone, but a few minutes ago I went out front and they’re back. Animal control will be getting a call in the morning.

On the plus side, I had some really good chicken and dumplings tonight. :P

This makes me even more jealous because you get actual weather to go along with the painfully hot temperatures. I just get painfully hot temperatures. We’ve had virtually no rain to speak of in the past 3 months (just finished up our so-called rainy season) and no decent winter storms for the past 5 years.

But mostly I’m cranky because I absolutely hate the heat, and it’s 79 degrees in the house right now. If I had AC it would be 68 and we’d install solar panels to try to make up for the electricity use.

Oh, he thinks he’s hit upon a major cover-up. My guess, he thinks the Saudi student is who either A) radicalized the elder brother or B) was their contact in the states, and is sure that in reality the administration’s efforts to get him out of the country is to avoid the “embarrassment” of being caught having allowed a terrorist on US soil. One no doubt with Al-Q ties, which would mean that Obama doesn’t have them on the run and they’ve succeeded in another attack on US soil during his presidency.

It does. And I certainly agree - he’s much more out for perceived political points on this one than any actual learning, but that’s not terribly uncommon in politics. Unless those tweets from a few days ago were phony, I can’t give Drudge much credit for covering the Boston attacks sensibly.

First, he was shocked at the sight of Boston using large armored trucks during a public safety crisis. Despite the fact that most big city SWAT teams have been using similar vehicles for decades.

Second, but just as ridiculous, he called the curfew in Boston—imposed while Dzhokhar was still at large—a “police state tactic.”

We’ve argued all this helps speak to the definitional absurdity surrounding “weapons of mass destruction,” and indicates the infamous term ought to be retired, replaced instead by the specifics of what an explosive actually is or does. None of that bears on Tsarnaev’s case.

Here’s the problem with the way we’ve allowed the legal definition of WMD to be conflated with the national firearms act’s more broad definition of a “destructive device.” We’re now at the point where we’re prosecuting people for death penalty level crimes using the term weapon of mass destruction to mean things like ordinary explosives, large bore projectile weapons and rockets. The problem is that by this definition we as a country are then guilty of using these same weapons of mass destruction in our prosecution of the war on terror. Every time a drone or helicopter fires a hellfire missile, every time a warplane drops a bomb, every time a marine soldier fires a 40mm grenade launcher they’re now employing a weapon of mass destruction in our name. Does it matter if the use is intended to be against the enemy, we’ve used these weapons of mass destruction to kill a lot of Afghani children who were guilty of nothing more than gathering firewood.

Is this kind of a pedantic critique, maybe. But words have meaning and power, if they didn’t we wouldn’t have used the specter of WMD to justify the invasion of Iraq. Now in our hurry to use the most loaded rhetoric possible in these kinds of criminal prosecutions we’re asking ourselves and the world to buy into two different definitions of the term just to suit our rhetorical needs both at home and abroad.

McCain, have been calling for the President to declare the bomber an enemy combatant subject to tribunals, rather than process him through the federal criminal legal system.

Graham knows better, but is pandering to this dubious legal proposition to stave off a primary challenge:

Graham in particular should know this, since he helped write the 2009 law that says Tsarnaev may not be tried as an enemy combatant and thus points away from holding him as one. But that’s not stopping Graham and the others from trying to score terror points—and, of course, trying to make the president appear weak. This isn’t about actually fighting terrorists. It’s about running for election.

To review the legal history: After 9/11, Congress declared that the United States was engaged in an armed conflict against al-Qaida and associated terrorist groups. Members of those groups could be designated enemy combatants and were not subject to the traditional rules governing prisoners of war. That status is how the Bush administration sent hundreds of people captured in Afghanistan and elsewhere to Guantanamo, interrogated them without lawyers or the usual human rights, and in some cases tortured them. (John McCain was one of the most important voices to speak out against this cruel and degrading treatment, but never mind.)

There is, of course, a huge and incredibly heated debate about how much useful intelligence the CIA and the military extracted from the enemy combatants, waterboarding and all. Set that debate aside for a minute. Set aside, also, that Guantanamo still holds 166 prisoners whom the president and the courts don’t know what else to do with, and 84 of them are on a hunger strike after recent tensions with their guards. What matters, legally speaking, is that in 2011 Congress basically said, much as it had a decade earlier, that the president can detain “al- Qaida and Taliban fighters and those from allied forces.”

None of the evidence so far suggests that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev or his older brother, Tamerlan, are connected to al-Qaida or any group associated with it. To the contrary. Authorities keep stressing that the brothers appear to have acted alone. Yes, Tsarnaev and his brother are Muslims, and at some point they were radicalized, but Congress has never said that we are fighting Muslim extremists everywhere.

It’s also important that the key 2011 provision in which Congress said whom the president can detain “exempts U.S. citizens entirely,” as Benjamin Wittes explained at the time. Similarly the 2009 Military Commission Act—which Graham wrote—states that American citizens may not be tried by military commission.

I admit, I used to have some respect for Lindsay Graham. Let the RWNJs be hypocrites (I’m looking at you, Rick Perry and Ted Cruz, for example), but that doesn’t mean that we turn our backs on fellow Americans in their times of need; Americans help people out, it’s what we do (and should do).

Full disclosure: I live in a very red state (TN) and my family’s home was pretty much destroyed in the May 2010 floods that we had here in Nashville. Besides the financial help we received from FEMA (disaster grants) and SBA (a low-cost mortgage that gave us most of the money we needed to rebuild), we got a lot of help from a couple of private organizations, without which, we wouldn’t have been able to complete the rebuild; I need to give a big shoutout to St. Luke’s Community House (who helped us out with about $20,000+ worth of materials, such as the HVAC unit, drywall, doors, flooring, trim, etc.) and to Lutheran Disaster Response (who sent us several crews from all over the US to help us with labor).

Several streets in downtown Charleston have reopened after a suspicious package was found Tuesday morning.

It has found near the Marriott hotel and the Charleston Town Center Mall about 11 a.m.

Deputies tell WSAZ.com, no bomb was found. Investigators did find nails and screws in the old army duffle bag.

Bomb technicians have also been called to the Charleston Treatment Center on Greenbrier Street.

The director of the facility tells WSAZ.com, they received a bomb threat about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, so they called police.

It is unclear if anything has been found at that location.

Investigators also aren’t sure if the two cases are related.

I’d say it was just rank dishonesty, except that I clearly remember an event in my college years where someone had come to the campus to crank out one of those anti-evolution screeds (I assume most if not all students that were there did it as a lark, much as I did), and that person seriously argued that evolution was false because a compact car left in a parking lot did not evolve into an SUV.

Judge drops 3 of the murder charges against Gosnell.

At the urging of the defense, a Philadelphia judge dropped nine charges, including some of the most serious, against an abortion doctor on trial for murder.


The charges — including three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of abuse of a corpse and one count of infanticide — were dropped Tuesday as Dr. Kermit Gosnell’s defense attorney Jack McMahon began to make his case.

Judge Jeffery Rinehart ruled the judgment of acquittal on those counts — meaning that he felt there wasn’t enough evidence to bring those to a jury.

Gosnell, 72, was charged in the overdose death of a patient and in the deaths of seven babies allegedly born alive. He still faces a third-degree murder charge in the death of Nepalese immigrant Karnamaya Mongar, 41, and four counts of first-degree murder for the baby deaths.

Tuesday’s ruling came as McMahon began to present Gosnell’s case after five weeks of prosecution witnesses took the stand. The defense has argued that there were no live births at Gosnell’s Women’s Medical Center, and that Mongar died in 2009 of unforeseen complications.
