Affordable electric cars are around the corner…I’m really tempted, though I still don’t like the limited range (about 68 miles)…still, I like my gas Smart Car, but if I knew there was another 30 miles of range or so, I’d get one of these in a heartbeat.

Mostly because it’s about 50 miles round trip, and knowing my wife, she can add another fifty in a day without blinking.

I have a tepid response to electric cars; they’re great for people who don’t do a lot of long-distance driving, like I do, but battery technology is hell on the environment to produce. I’m holding out for hydrogen cars.

We’re debating what to do when the time comes to replace my car. We have the teardrop, so one car is the trip car; we hadn’t known we were going to get one when we bought his current car, so getting something a little beefier could be nice. On the flip side, something like that for puttering around town would also rock.

Of course the main goal is currently to put off needing to get a new car.

Warning WND Link:

Pamela Geller: Has America lost her soul?

… we see a disturbing trend: America did not rally, protest or demand answers when the Obama administration classified the Fort Hood jihad massacre not as terrorism, but as “workplace violence.” No one – not any politician or mainstream media figure of significance – called Obama on his cover-up of the jihad motive in the slaughter of our unarmed soldiers in Texas.

And the same nonchalance was exhibited in the wake of the jihad massacres of Ambassador Chris Stevens and other Americans in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. Our ambassador and attaches were slaughtered in cold blood in Benghazi, and Obama and several administration officials blamed the First Amendment, saying that it had all happened because of a video about Muhammad. And yet there was still no outcry. Two soldiers held off a jihadi army for over seven hours while calling and begging for help, for cover, and no one came. That was unforgivable. Did America demand answers?

Worse still, the nation re-elected this deceiver.

Still can’t believe the shit Beck’s peddling.

It’s not just that he’s peddling, it’s that so many are buying it hook, line, and stinker. Hateraid will take you far in the media, and never having to say you’re sorry gives them so much more leeway to spread their noxious bs.

Fighting free speech with free speech is the only way to deal with it - exposing the idiocy for what it is. But we’ve got Drudge admitting that he’s all for bringing the conspiracy mongering into the mainstream of conservatism. It’s going to be conspiracies all the way down, and unless the adults in the GOP take hold - or quit the party in disgust, we’re only going to see more of this nonsense.

My one interview was a phone interview 8 years ago that I didn’t realize was an interview until an offhand comment by my boss 3 days after I started. So! I turn to the Lizards.

Is there a way to answer the question when the biggest weakness she has that I could come up with is “reacts before hearing all the facts” in such a way that it can be turned into a strength?

“What’s your biggest weakness” always mention a skill that they can send you for training! For example, “I’d like to improve my Photoshop skills” or “I want to learn Android programming.”

If darth is around, I’m sure you’re getting a kick out of the news that the Barry Bonds plaque went missing at the ballpark, but only got reported yesterday. Team officials have no idea when it was swiped.

I just checked back on my own photos shot last Friday (the first game back from a road trip) and the plaque was gone by then. That means it was likely swiped while the Giants were on the road (and once again raises questions about security at the ballpark). I’m surprised no one noticed until yesterday.

The petro-chemical industry, or even larger the whole chemical+energy sectors of the economy, are the sources of major disasters continually. Some years are worse than others.

We forget that there are inherent dangers to many of the substances we use on a daily basis.

This danger is the basis on why the mountain of regulations have been created from laws passed, sometimes passed after some major disaster forces the politicians to do something.

Sen. Sessions struggles to explain Biblical basis of his anti-immigration views

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on immigration reform, Dr. David Fleming of the Champion Forest Baptist Church in Texas noted that Leviticus 19:33-34 calls on believers to treat foreigners in their land “as the native among you.”
….snip….
[Sessions] warned Fleming and others were “leading little ones astray” by citing Scripture “loosely.”

That would be someone who is decisive.

Never frame it as you did…that’s not a negative frown you can turn upside down and make it a smile. Work on the wording of the negative first. Then you can work on the positive spin. Perhaps, I make decisions based on the facts before me. Sometimes other facts come to light allowing me to reevaluate prior decisions. Blah. Blah. Blah. And have a solid example of how something played out, and his that weakness was actually a strength.

Mark Sanford (R) engaged in a public “debate” on Wednesday with a life-size picture of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) while accusing Elizabeth Colbert Busch, his opponent in a May 7 congressional election, of ducking him.

Hey, I can see the comparison. Banning slavery officially in this country just pushed it underground, if not off-shore. ‘course we dare not call themselves, just “illegals” (if you’re conservative) or “undocumented workers” (if you’re liberal). And that’s not counting the legions of folks whose wages ensure that they’re dependent on one or more forms of welfare just to keep a roof over their heads.

House GOP Freshmen Feel Left Out Of Failed Obamacare Repeal Rituals

Part of the reason House Republicans may not be able to put their futile efforts to repeal Obamacare behind them is that party freshmen won’t let them.

Now, four months in to Obama’s second term, as House GOP leaders promote modest measures and a gentler tone to rebrand the party, freshmen and their conservative allies are kicking it old school, demanding a frontal assault on the Affordable Care Act they know will fail.

At a Wednesday panel organized by the Heritage Foundation, conservative Republicans lamented that it’s been too long since they had the opportunity to vote to wipe out the Affordable Care Act in its entirety — and that the newest members haven’t had the chance yet.

“We need to get a vote on full repeal, and I’ve asked leadership for this. I’m a cosponsor of Michele Bachmann’s bill … that just goes straight at it for full repeal,” said Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), the chairman of the influential and deeply conservative Republican Study Committee. “We need to continue fighting for repeal. We need a clean vote on repeal.”

re: #216 Targetpractice

They need a clean vote on the repeal so they can burnish their conservative credentials for the next run in 2014. It’s got nothing to do with governance, or knowing that it has zero chance of getting passed the Senate, let alone the President’s veto. It’s wishful thinking masquerading as politics.

And it’s not like the House hasn’t been down this road before. They’ve held dozens of votes to repeal the PPACA, all of which have failed to advance past the House vote - precisely because the Senate and President wont go along.

PPACA is happening, and it’s bringing along with it the individual mandate - the very policy that conservatives thought was critical to a health care insurance makeover since it meant that individuals were responsible for their own decisions - and penalized accordingly when they opted not to join a health care exchange. But because the guy in the White House is who he is, and coopted the individual mandate idea in an attempt to woo GOPers to vote for the program, the GOP and conservatives savagely turned on the individual mandate claiming it was unconstitutional. They almost succeeded too, but for the SCt ruling.

The ACA has become the GOP’s Kobayashi Maru at this point. The GOP found out the hard way last November that Americans, particularly young voters and minority voters, don’t take well to suggestions that the law constitutes “hand-outs” and that it needs to be repealed. But anything short of votes for total repeal are going to draw the base’s ire and, as we saw yesterday, be doomed to failure if enough votes defect.

The death toll from the Bangladesh factory collapse is topping 200, and there’s likely more victims (there were something like 2,000+ working at the factories on any given day). Factory owners who forced workers to return to work - threatening them with lost wages if they didn’t go into the building despite the worrisome cracks that appeared in the structure and the police that warned not to enter until a full check was done - must be brought up on murder charges and held accountable.

The blood is on their hands.

A bank that was located in the same building evacuated its workers out of the building before the collapse. The factory owners/operators took the opposite tact - they coerced workers back in.

Who those factories supplied is still being investigated, though it looks like there’s a couple of international brands who may have sourced clothes from the affected factories located in the building.

Among the garment makers in the building were Phantom Apparels, Phantom Tac, Ether Tex, New Wave Style and New Wave Bottoms. Altogether, they produced several million shirts, pants and other garments a year. The New Wave companies, according to their website, make clothing for major brands including North American retailers The Children’s Place and Dress Barn, Britain’s Primark, Spain’s Mango and Italy’s Benetton. Ether Tex said Wal-Mart, the world’s biggest retailer, was one of its customers.

Many of the retailers distanced themselves from the disaster, saying they were not involved with the factories at the time of the collapse or had not recently ordered garments from them. Only Primark acknowledged it was using a factory in Rana Plaza.

Benetton said in an email to The Associated Press that people involved in the collapse were not Benetton suppliers. Wal-Mart said it was investigating and Mango said it had only discussed production of a test sample of clothing with one of the factories.

Hizbullah, which set itself up as a liberation group in Southern Lebanon after Israel’s invasion to boot the PLO from Lebanon in the early 1980s, has long outlived its utility to the Lebanese people (as Michael Totten recently reported), but that doesn’t mean that Hizbullah still doesn’t have animus towards Israel. Israel no longer occupies any Lebanese territory, but Hizbullah continues to pose a threat to Israel and regional stability because its terror masters in Damascus and Tehran deem it so.

Today, Hizbullah attempted to infiltrate Israeli airspace with a UAV. The Israeli air force shot it down.

At the same time, it’s a matter of diminishing returns. Boehner and the GOP leadership are basically gambling now that, when the law goes into force next year, it will be so devastating to the economy and voters both that the American people will leap into their arms and beg them to make it go away.

The additional flaw in that plan is that they’ve got nothing to offer as an alternative. Any time they’re pressed on how what an alternative to the ACA would be, they deflect the question or mumble about “tort reform” and “buying insurance across state lines.” Their ardent opposition to the ACA, from bottom to top, leaves them few options.

re: #243 Mattand

Actually, I hadn’t seen that.

The Star Ledger reported:

Christie also said he would make the sellers of violent video games post industry-issued ratings and require parental consent for games rated “mature” or “adult only.” And he issued a litany of stronger penalties for those found guilty of selling firearms to convicted criminals, hiring “straw purchasers,” and possessing guns and ammunition with plans to illegally transfer or traffic them.

There are two bills under consideration.

One would be an outright ban on sales to minors. That’s clearly unconstitutional as per the SCt decision on the CA statute.

The second would require parental permission.

It’s as though the legislators know that the chances for these bills to survive constitutional scrutiny is low, which is why they’ve got two flavors.

Kean, the prime sponsor on both (and a GOPer), notes that the video games today aren’t like the cartoons we had growing up. Right, like no one ever got shot in Bugs Bunny, or blown up, or eviscerated only to return moments later (because they’re cartoons!). He admits that the science on any kind of link hasn’t been made, but wants to put this out there.

Sadly, either of these moves is more regulation than what goes into sales at gun shows. It’s just that Christie and the state GOP want to show that they’re doing something to address gun violence. They’re just focusing on everything but the guns themselves.

Go apple. Good season for the classics.

Heh. Fair enough.

If those are the choices, I’d say apple. I like blueberry pie, but it gets really messy.

Good afternoon Lizards!

Sitting here at home listening the the loud rattling from the construction site (jackhammering for the most part.)

Got myself a case of food poisoning Tuesday night that manifested itself as vomiting and associated dehydration. At this point small amounts of food are staying down - but it’s mainly OJ, weak tea, and a few crackers at this point. Yesterday’s massive headache has eased as well, so life is a bit more tolerable.

Maybe they could hold a hearing on that Texas explosion last week that killed a bunch of people.

Why would they bother? Nobody with strange looking names was involved.

282 Vicious Babushka  Thu, Apr 25, 2013 9:10:28am

I made a blueberry pie two weeks ago. The filling was great but I was lazy and used a frozen crust so it was a horrible fail.

The cherry pie I baked last week was great, even if I disregarded the Pie Cookbook Lady’s advice and used Crisco instead of butter.

So I’m thinking I want a do-over of the blueberry.

Oh, for God’s sake: you know how everyone is lauding Chris Christie as the Second Coming of Moderation in US Politics?

Well, nothing says “moderation” like pushing legislation that the Supreme Court has already shot down.

Because using a skyhook in Bioshock Infinite is as dangerous as a straw gun purchase at a gun show.

W. T. F.

Lawhawk, I’m guessing you already saw this?

I presume this is acting on the fifty recommendations that came of the SAFE committee report. I printed that out and planned on doing a page on it at some point just as an informational thing. That it would start over in the innocent side of the recommendations and touch on the video game thing did not surprise me. That’s not the third rail that some of the other recommendations touch upon.

286 ProBosniaLiberal  Thu, Apr 25, 2013 9:14:46am

Well, apparently the video has come out about the collapse of the Umayyad Mosque’s Minaret.

It was blown up from the bottom and collapsed, filmed with multiple cameras. I am betting that it was done by Jahbat al-Nusra.

re: #283 Vicious Babushka

What did you eat?

There are a couple of suspects. Could have been the Indian food I ate at lunch, or (more likely given onset time) the batch of chile I made that evening. Hard to tell with these things sometimes. The latter was mainly canned ingredients (tomatoes, beans, chile peppers), but I guess it’s possible the ground beef was bad - though it looked and smelled fine before I browned it.

Went to bed Tuesday night feeling OK. Woken up at 3:30am by a very nasty leg cramp (implying dehydration) and feeling queasy. Was vomiting about an hour later and had a nasty headache.

My take is that my digestive system shut itself down and then eventually purged. Thus the dehydration (headache, cramps, etc.) and a low fever.

Yesterday was spent sleeping intermittently while getting liquids to stay down - mainly water. Better since last night, but still a bit queasy and feeling tired.

Been listening to the Bush library speeches. No, they didn’t mention Iraq, but they did mention Dick Cheney. Little steps.

That said, he did have a few positive accomplishments, and it was right to recognize them. This wasn’t meant to be a roast (though both Carter and Clinton got a few humorous comments in during their praise). The only thing that really bothered me was the rewriting of Katrina as one of his accomplishments. That was a dismal and nationally embarrassing failure, plain and simple.

In hindsight, Bush’s record will be decidedly mixed. The two biggest blots will be the Iraq war (which I supported WMD notwithstanding - the human rights abuses were sufficient IMO) and the Katrina response.

All the good from the international AIDS program, the NCLB, to TARP and Medicaid prescription drug programs wont overcome that.

The living presidents club is one of the most exclusive on the planet and speaks to how we do national politics here - that it’s easy enough to cross the aisle as a former president to share a stage and even work together on human rights and disaster recovery as several presidents have done - Clinton and GHWB for instance. Only they know just how tough the job is, and how every decision can lead to crisis, disaster, or triumph. No decision will go unremarked upon by the media - no matter how trivial or significant. It’s the nature of the job.

Bush got his library dedicated today. It will be interesting to see what documents are made public as time goes on, particularly those relating to the WoT as they get declassified years from now.

And every president from Bush forward will hope to god(s) that they will never have to deal with another 9/11-scoped event on their watch.

Erik Rush: ‘We Have Far More Human Garbage in This Country Than We Ever Ought to Have Tolerated’

WorldNetDaily columnist Erik Rush, who has called for the mass incarceration of liberals and the murder of all Muslims, writes today that, thanks to liberals, “émigrés from Third World toilets” have come to America and now “we have far more human garbage in this country than we ever ought to have tolerated.” According to Rush, the left has planned “to destabilize America” by promoting “radical Marxism” and “radical Islam” until we are all pushed “into dhimmitude.”

308 lawhawk  Thu, Apr 25, 2013 9:51:59am

After the Iraq WMD debacle, you can be damned sure that the WH is going to double, triple, and quadruple check every bit of intel claiming WMD usage occurred in Syria before committing to a course of action that could lead to US forces somehow getting directly involved.

Making sure that the orders to use WMD in Syria were made from the top levels of the Assad regime are chief among them.

They want an airtight case, and the delay in action is warranted, despite the human rights abuses ongoing there that ought to be reason enough to act beyond sanctions (democide against the regime’s political opponents’ socio-political groups).

Years ago, after a bout of food poisoning my wife called the Health Deaprtment to report the burrito place we’d eaten at that evening. The guy said they’d look into it, but noted that real food poisoning is generally caused by something you ate 24-72 hours before, rather than something you ate that day. Of course, that’s what you remember, at least in part from it making a return appearance.

Stomach flu, of course, manifests similarly, but it’s contagious. If your nearest and dearest get hit within a week, it probably wasn’t food poisoning.

Also, I assume you COOKED the ingredients in the chili, so even if the meat was iffy, that should have taken care of it.

The Mrs. does a ton of baking, but not pies. We’re not that big into them, even though she loves fruit - she doesn’t like the consistency of most fruit pies when cooked, and I’m a chocoholic and fruit gets in the way. My mom was never much of a baker.

And despite growing up in Brooklyn, I never cared for cheesecakes either, let alone Junior’s. /sacrilegious, I know.

If something’s gone bad, cooking won’t take care of it. What makes you sick is often the toxins made by the contaminating bacteria, and you can kill the bacteria, but the toxins are still there.

Pies, now - the best pie I ever have eaten was a gooseberry pie, made with the red kind of gooseberries from my Mom’s garden. Gooseberries, sugar, and tapioca starch for the filling. The flavor was so rich and intense! Made every other pie I’ve ever had pale by comparison.
