Wow, very cool feature of jQuery I just discovered - you can embed a JSON data structure in an HTML5 data attribute, and when you call jQuery’s .data() function on the element, the JSON structure is parsed into a Javascript object.
I know, gibberish, right? But this is something we use every day here at LGF.
Here’s the code I’m now using to embed videos:
<div class="vcent"> <a class="media" data-opts='{"width":560,"height":315,"type":"swf","params":{"allowScriptAccess":"always","allowFullScreen":true,"wmode":"transparent"},"flashvars":{"launch":"51653479","width":560,"height":315}}' href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32545640">MSNBC Video</a> </div>
Inside the attribute “data-opts” you see the JSON data structure - and notice that it can contain nested objects. The value of the data-opts attribute is inside single quotes; I normally like to use double quotes for HTML attributes, but the JSON standard says that keys and string values need to be surrounded by double quotes, and HTML doesn’t care. Hence the single quotes.
When you use the jQuery .data() function on it, like this:
var opts = $('.media').data('opts');
…the variable opts automagically becomes the Javascript object described in that JSON code above, and you can reference the elements of the object with standard JS notation, for example:
var width = opts.width, height = opts.height, wmode = opts.params.wmode;
This ends our irregularly scheduled nerd-out moment of the evening.

Hey everybody. Thanks for the good thoughts. The rough part is watching someone writhe in pain so bad that all they keep saying is “I want to die.” I don’t understand the medical profession when someone is in such obvious agony and they worry about overmedicating and so won’t prescribe enough pain medication to make a difference. Look he wants to die because he’s in agony. He’s gonna die anyway, let him at least do it with some dignity.
53 | PT Barnum Thu, Apr 25, 2013 8:34:19pm |
The good thing is once he did get the right level of relief, he didn’t want to die anymore, he just wanted to rest. We’re hoping he’ll be well enough to go home again, but we’re not counting on it at this point.

re: #52 SpaceJesus

Lawyers are reflecting our laws which reflect our official “morality” and official “ethics” which are entirely creations of the power of our meddling religious leaders.
It all stems from both the history and current remenants of officially respectable religious power. We have always officially pretended that morality is rooted in the bible and that decisions of life and death have to be based in Christian concepts of morality, ie. poorly disguised dogma.
56 | stabby Thu, Apr 25, 2013 8:47:43pm |
As long as we cede to the lie that Religion is moral, this sort of injustice results. In short, many Americans die in pain because the church decided that suffering purified the soul and that drugs are sinful.
For that same reason, Mother Theresa shouldn’t be so loved, since her hospices made sure that its patients died that way, explicitly to purify their souls.

It all comes down to favoring quantity of life over quality. It’s a difficult balance. Once they got my Dad-in-law’s pain under control he perked right up. I had to get a little testy with the nursing staff to get them to call the doctor. To their credit, they walked down to surgery and got him to approve the order.

That’s only the more secular side of it, but if reasons were purely secular we’d be given the same full range of choices that people have in European countries. Our laws were shaped by the horror that we might overtreat the dying, and by alieving their suffering, help them sin in their last moments thus delivering their souls to hell.
Suicide is a moral sin, is it not?

Not so much private lawyers as prosecutors. Doctors have been charged criminally for prescribing more pain-killers than a prosecutor thought appropriate. It’s not something doctors can push back against, either, since being charged is significantly damaging to one’s career, even if the case is dismissed before trial.

If it were up to me, we’d have an amendment to the constitution to the effect that there will be no laws against victimless crimes. That means that people have a right to decide to take dangerous drugs at any time or even get help to commit suicide. I can not see any moral excuse for restricting the freedom of others to take risks with their own lives. Meddling where one isn’t wanted with the policeman’s gun backing you up is not morally excusable.

re: #61 stabby
In Reply:
1. Saying people “have a right to decide to take dangerous drugs at any time” is actually quite wrong, unless followed by the words ‘so long as doing such does not endanger others’. Some drugs, such as PCP and crystal meth, can be prohibited independent of any moral concerns because they cause their users to become dangerous in and of themselves. By the same token, while I favor marijuana legalization, public safety requires that one not drive while high from pot; Anyone who does drive while high puts others at risk and thus should be charged with DUI.
2. If a person willfully decides to take a stupid risk and gets himself/herself hurt badly, they should not have the right to burden others with the cost of clearing up their mess. Thus, a health insurance company should be free to demand an additional premium from someone using a hard drug, much as it would from a smoker.

The cost of medical treatment for people who’ve hurt themselves is no doubt less than the societal cost of NOT treating people who’ve hurt themselves.
I would also say that denying people their freedom is itself a kind of cost, one so many magnitudes greater than the petty thing you’re worrying about that yours shouldn’t come into the main argument at all.
And it is THIS petty: conservatives just want to express their hatred of sinners, the unworthy, and often enough, of the poor. Your attitude is about a display of authority and disapproval. And this “cost” red herring is just a convenient hook to hang that harmful attitude on.

My husband did just that, he voted quality because he knew the quantity was going to just make the quality worse.
He did a few rounds of chemo (to say he tried) and then we just kept him home, well medicated (good docs who agreed & cheerfully wrote scripts), no hospice and stoned as could be.

Pretty much always been afraid of heights. According to my mother, I became afraid of spiders due to one high-strung babysitter. And I’m afraid of drowning because of an incident when I was at a lake and went out farther than I could swim.

There’s always a spider you can’t see. You know why your place isn’t overflowing with wasps, flies, crickets, and roaches? “Because I’m not a disgusting slob,” you say. That’s only part of the reason. The rest of the story is that the 7 or 8 very discreet and professional spiders that live with you do their part to mercilessly assassinate those critters when they enter the perimeter.

Nah, I know they’re there, I just prefer not to think about them…overly much.

And working backwards, I see this. No, Mr. Fisher, the constitution does not grant the right to control (respect to establish) religion to states. The ability of the states to make laws which are in conflict with federal law is forbidden, both by constitution (see supremacy clause) and historical act (see nullification act of 1838, see US civil war, see civil rights movement).

Only way to even begin to argue that Derp Fischer has a point is if he views the “Constitution as given,” as not including the Bill of Rights, which was ratified later (December 15, 1791). The Constitution was ratified March 4, 1789.
But by his rationale, the government can clamp down on free speech, abridge your rights to trial, you have no privacy rights, and the government can establish a religion (and note to Derp Fischer - that means it can impose a version of Christianity, Cromism, Cthulhuism, agnosticism, Judaism, Islam, or any other religion or cult as a federally-designated-religion even as states themselves have their own constitutions to follow and largely track the federal Constitution and Bill of Rights).
In other words, in his perverted view of the Constitution, the government can trample all over his rights. The govenrment could come in and seize him without a trial, without evidenciary protections, could quarter troops in his home, prohibit him and everyone else from ever owning any firearm, etc. But not surprising since he has no clue as to the unintended consequences of staking out nutty positions on the law and the Constitution.
124 | kirkspencer Fri, Apr 26, 2013 6:29:26am |
In (small) fairness, our interpretation isn’t the “original” interpretation. 1947, Everson v Board of Education. A 5-4 decision on the case at hand’s decision, but both majority and all dissenters agreed in the interpretation that the establishment clause applied to state as well as federal government.

It’s the mainstreaming (and mainlining) of conspiracy mongering on the right. Conspiracy theories that were once on the fringe are becoming central to GOP and its right wing institutions, PACs, advocacy groups, watchdog groups, etc.
Drudge issued the warning shot when he began highlighting and featuring Infowars and Alex Jones conspiracy mongering on his site - touting it as a feature (not a bug). He’s embraced the conspiracies, and the rest of the right wing seems to be following without regard to where it leads.

My husband did just that, he voted quality because he knew the quantity was going to just make the quality worse.
He did a few rounds of chemo (to say he tried) and then we just kept him home, well medicated (good docs who agreed & cheerfully wrote scripts), no hospice and stoned as could be.
His cancer was very aggressive, but until the last day when he had to go to the hospital, he was happy(considering the circumstances), lucid and able to celebrate his life with each breath.
I have no regrets about supporting his choices, since I knew we were in a no win situation.
Same with my dad - when he was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer he insisted we all promise we let him do things his way and we, of course, agreed. When he had had enough he stopped the chemo (which wasn’t helping) he had a month or so of no pain, his 75th birthday and his last Passover with the family. He went very quickly from an infection - was in the hospital for 2 days where the doctors gave him all the pain meds he needed to be comfortable. I’ll never forget how great the doctors, nurses and all the other healthcare workers were. They were determined to let him leave this life with dignity. May both our dads be resting in peace.

You know, when my daughter was little, we were broke ass poor. Our PP clinic would see her if the health dept was too crowded or I simply couldn’t get to the HD. These morons think that PP is nothing but a giant room filled with women getting simultaneous abortions. I don’t know what the hell we would have done without PP, for my then little girl (who will be 29 this yr)or myself. I never went to PP for an abortion, I went there so I wouldn’t be in the position to have to make that decision.
I’m about to the point of saying that men need to STFD and STFU about women’s biology until they can pass a basic health and human biology class. Idiots.

I knew that would be a song linked today.
Went to see him a couple of times here in Austin. Both times at Antone’s, the first one in which he lived up to his nic and was a “no show”. I kept the billing poster of that for years. Maybe I still have it somewhere.
I did make it to the second concert where he did show and it was great!

Only thing worse would have had Skynet give an endorsement.

Washington Republicans file bill to legalize discrimination against LGBT people
A bill filed by a group of 12 Republican state senators in Washington would allow businesses to discriminate against LGBT people based on religious or “philosophical” beliefs.
Earlier this year, Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a lawsuit against a florist who said that she could not supply flowers for a gay couple’s wedding “because of my relationship with Jesus Christ.”
In response, state Sen. Sharon Brown (R) and 11 other of the 23 Republicans in the Washington state Senate want to legalize discrimination against gay and lesbian couples with Senate Bill 5927. The measure goes far beyond religious exceptions, allowing business to discriminate based on “philosophical beliefs” or even “matters of conscience.”
My philosophical beliefs mean I can discriminate against moronic zealots.

House GOPers Chafetz and Jordan hold hearings, inviting none other than Alex Jones to testify on how the feds are stockpiling 1.6 billion rounds of ammo.
what does GOP have left? MT @mmfaextreme conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has now inspired legislation in Congress. mm4a.org/ZKYrqg— Eric Boehlert (@EricBoehlert) April 26, 2013
Oh, and the solution to the stockpiling is a bill that GOPers have introduced that would prohibit the practice of stockpiling ammo.
In other words, these clueless morons will increase the costs to law enforcement agencies within the federal government from taking advantage of bulk purchases to meet their multi-year needs for training, use, and availability. Yeah, that’s fiscally responsible alright.
Inhofe is in on that too. And peddling nonsense about how the federal government is pushing civilian purchasers out of the market with the bulk buys - all while ignoring that even the NRA has put the kibosh on this nonsense. Any shortages in ammo for civilian use is due to a run on ammo by people who think that the government is going to ban guns and buying into the right wing scare tactics.
Corrected - Jones wasn’t invited, but the hearing was essentially held to air Jones’ conspiracy minded claims about the stockpiling of ammo.

Ron Paul’s Extreme Ties Re-emerge At New Institute
Paul, who retired this year from the House, is running a new think tank aimed at supporting his “non-interventionist” foreign policy and libertarian domestic politics. But rather than a new chapter for the longtime representative, The Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity looks more like a return to the old extremist ties he tried to shake off in recent years as his movement gained a more mainstream following.
As Jamie Kirchick reports in The Daily Beast, his group’s advisory board includes incendiary columnist Lew Rockwell, who has been identified in news reports as the most likely author of a series of racist, homophobic and conspiracy-laden newsletters Paul published in the ’80s and ’90s.
Despite being marketed with his endorsement and sometimes presented under his name, Paul denied any knowledge of their content in his recent presidential runs. But Rockwell’s re-emergence into Paul’s inner circle suggests he hasn’t put the past behind him.
Other board members profiled by Kirchick include John Laughland, who made defending Slobodan Milosevic from ethnic cleansing charges a personal cause, and economics professor Walter Block, who argued on Rockwell’s website that the country would be better off if the Confederate states had successfully cut ties with the “monster Lincoln.” This is not far from Paul’s own comments — in a 2007 Meet The Press appearance he said that the “iron-fisted” Lincoln should never have fought the “senseless Civil War.”

I have a couple of cats who will, sometimes, decide inhaling their food is necessary. After which they hork a bit, then throw it up.
The dogs start gathering as soon as the horking starts, then argue over who gets to clean it up. Unless I get in there right away and use a rag or paper towel.
I’ve become much more sanguine about the whole thing.

re: #201 Vicious Babushka
Those budget numbers are wrong. While Clinton did have budget surpluses for the years 1998-2001, there was the cumulative debt that was still present and growing.
Bush inherited a budget situation that resulted in surpluses for a couple of years, which quickly got erased both due to the recession, the 9/11 attacks, and then WoT, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Since 2009, the budget deficit for each year has decline, and is expected to continue to decline - but the cumulative deficit is going to continue growing.

re: #91 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce
There’s always a spider you can’t see. You know why your place isn’t overflowing with wasps, flies, crickets, and roaches? “Because I’m not a disgusting slob,” you say. That’s only part of the reason. The rest of the story is that the 7 or 8 very discreet and professional spiders that live with you do their part to mercilessly assassinate those critters when they enter the perimeter.
Spiders are your friend. Treat them as such. Especially the invisible ones.
I will never in a thousand years convince my fiancee of this. Instead, I have to quietly smuggle any that I find in the house to a place of safety. It’s basically “Schindler’s Web”.
