NBA Player Jason Collins Says He’s Gay, Breitbrats Get Their Smear On

Wingnuts doing what they do
Sports • Views: 58,500

You may have heard already that NBA free agent Jason Collins came right out of the closet today. As far as I know, this makes him the first openly gay NBA player; you should read his entire well-written piece in Sports Illustrated.

When the news broke, breitbart.com editor and professionally persecuted victim of the left Ben Shapiro sprang into action and took to the Twitters to denigrate Collins’ playing abilities. That’s how the Breitbrat weirdos respond to all news that involves their major targets of hatred, gay people and black people — by smearing.

I’m only surprised that Shapiro didn’t find a way to work in a hate-Obama angle too.

UPDATE at 4/29/13 4:05:32 pm

Meanwhile, religious right caveman Bryan Fischer sees this as scientific proof that people like Jason Collins are sinners.

One thing that’s been a bright spot for me, watching the derp develop over Twitter, is the support he’s gotten from sports figures such as ESPN writers and even Kobe Bryant. Good thing the sports community isn’t all as bigoted as the Breitbrats.

So Jason Collins is a hero because he’s gay? Our standard for heroism has dropped quite a bit since Normandy.

What makes him so sure no gay people fought at Normandy?

From Collins’s SI article:

No one wants to live in fear. I’ve always been scared of saying the wrong thing. I don’t sleep well. I never have. But each time I tell another person, I feel stronger and sleep a little more soundly. It takes an enormous amount of energy to guard such a big secret. I’ve endured years of misery and gone to enormous lengths to live a lie. I was certain that my world would fall apart if anyone knew.

Little pissants like Ben Shapiro should realize they aren’t upholding some proper tradition or protecting civilization, they are holding civilization back and hurting real people. Causing real pain. Sometimes death, either by suicide or an early death from stress.

I want to turn the Cambridge guy loose on Benny. Then I want to see Jason set a hard pick in front of him.

But really, I wish he would just wise up, grow up, and stop hurting people. His words do matter, in conjunction with those of all the other haters who make good people, even 7’ tall people, afraid to be themselves.

As a side note, I’d observe that a Creationist with whom I’ve previously tussled uses the term ‘operational science’ to refer to that science which gives him the answers he likes, and the kind that doesn’t as, in essence, ‘not REAL science’.

Back in the goode olde days, people like Bryan enjoyed a privileged position because of their religious beliefs. Minorities were kept on one side of the tracks, the affluent white men on the other. Crime was as segregated as the people. Women were taking care of the children, house keeping and supper. Golf clubs had men only links and rooms. Kids and women who refused to do as they were told could be beat with impunity. Churches enforced the belief that all was as it should be.

That’s a lot to give up because of liberal causes.

Speaking of gay acceptance issues… I just saw on my local NBC affiliate news that there was a vote here today by the local BSA board regarding their ban on gay employees, volunteers, and scouts. They voted to uphold the ban saying they wanted to concentrate on the “positives” of scouting. That, to me, sounds like an admission that the ban is a negative but frankly don’t expect them to acknowledge that point.

For fun, I went to the affiliate website to see if they allowed comments on their stories. They do. But hmmm, though that is the top story listed on their website, clicking the link gets a “page unknown.” They pulled it. What do we want to bet that they pulled it due to unconscionable, homophobic comments?

Sanford probably has no idea how to run a campaign that is actually a contest between R and D. The 1st district in SC has been R continuously since 1981, so Sanford may have assumed that all he needs is the (R) next to his name on the ballot.

This assumption didn’t work for Coakley in MA, and hopefully doesn’t work for Sanford in SC.

These are human beings. Lives. And never once have I heard any argument about the supposed harm that can even remotely explain the very real, very present harm that is being done to these people every day. The sick hatred that it perpetuates is disgusting and no, I don’t have to ‘tolerate’ intolerance by allowing it to be codified into law.

At least I have hope that there will be significant change on this in the US legal arena in my lifetime, even if the bigoted attitudes take longer to change.

86 Kid A  Mon, Apr 29, 2013 5:06:46pm

And then there is this, via HotAir…

I lost all respect for the gay rights movement as soon as they started referring to themselves as LGBT.

There may be some people who are born bi-sexual, but if there’s anywhere near as many of them as there are gay people, they’d demand their own separate movement, as they would have less in common with both gays and straights than gays and straights have in common with each other, in terms of the various dilemmas they face.

The vast majority of people who engage in bisexuality are heterosexuals engaging in deviant sexual behavior, most likely due to the fact that they were either sexually molested as children or lured into a bisexual experience at an impressionable age via peer pressure by deviant friends.

As far as the transgender crowd, these people are just plain freaks mutilating themselves. I don’t care if you’re the most flaming queen who ever lived, if you’re born a man, you’re still a man and you’ll never be anything else but a man. You can cut off your penis and grow breasts, but you’ll still have man hands, man shoulders, and man biceps.

I have nothing against gay people and believe that they are born that way. It’s a birth defect, nothing more nothing less. But the gay rights crowd can go to hell. They’re nothing but a bunch of anti-American Leftists trying to further undermine the Judeo-Christian values that serve as the foundation of the principles that this country was founded on.

They don’t give a crap about gay people. If feeding gay people into a wood chipper would bring about the destruction of Western Capitalism, they’d support that.

Stay classy, wingnuts!

With something like organic nature that admittedly looks designed, they will naturally look for a designer.

I had to come back and reply to this, because what you highlight right here, this is what breaks my heart.

When wingnuts feel persecuted, they have a sense of powerlessness that makes them feel like they can’t cause anyone any real harm, so they never even look to see if there’s a real person being hurt by their hate. And the feeling persecution makes them feel saintly for continuing. Like they are putting themselves in harm’s way. DARVO all the way.

You know, in over a decade of arguing this (and other things) on an archery/bowhunting forum, I STILL do not get why it is SO FUCKING IMPORTANT to them. I even joke “Do you suppose gay men sit around online discussing Bowhunters?”

I have never understood it, but there is something visceral in the response - hatred, fear, whatever. And they obsess on the mechanics of gay sex - “Do you know what they do to each other?” And of course, this leads inevitably to “You must be gay!”

I wish I knew what their issue is. They claim, of course, that it’s Biblical, but they don’t post thread after thread about the evils of adultery, or shellfish, so it’s pretty clear they simply use the Bible to make their hatred not only okay, but actually GOOD.

Fear of The Other.

Yes, but also the fascination with what others find sexually stimulating has an element of voyeurism embedded in it.

And, it’s not just fear the other, but also fear of sex in general. Fundamentalists approaches their late antiquity magickal writings as sources of just that - magick. However, the magick won’t work if you don’t follow the forumula, and that includes 2300 year old hang-ups about sexuality in a particular group of religious leaders in one tiny corner of the planet.

Even the 1st century writings, including the NT, rarely touches this subject. I can think of only one NT reference that explicitly addresses the issue (and yes, it is condemnatory), but the whole passage condemns various practices that many people today think nothing of.

Using the religious mumbo-jumbo as a way of covering up their own fears and hang-ups (and voyeurism) is what Fischer et. al. practice.

He said Republicans could never hope to regain the White House if they pandered to such demographics, who were stubbornly opposed to immigration reform and same-sex marriage.

“I think talk radio has driven the platform drafters in the GOP for at least the last several election cycles,” Rivera continued.

Rivera warned right wing radio had “helped cripple the GOP” through its influence on the party. He said Mitt Romney was defeated “right out of the gate” because of the conservative party platform that Republicans approved in 2012.

Your child’s brain on math: Don’t bother?

Parents whose children are struggling with math often view intense tutoring as the best way to help them master crucial skills, but a new study released on Monday suggests that for some kids even that is a lost cause.

According to the research, the size of one key brain structure and the connections between it and other regions can help identify the 8- and 9-year olds who will hardly benefit from one-on-one math instruction.

“We could predict how much a child learned from the tutoring based on measures of brain structure and connectivity,” said Vinod Menon, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, who led the research.

The study, published in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to use brain imaging to look for a connection between brain attributes and the ability to learn arithmetic. But despite its publication in a well-respected journal, the research immediately drew criticism.

[…]

The PNAS paper:

Neural predictors of individual differences in response to math tutoring in primary-grade school children

Now, more than ever, the ability to acquire mathematical skills efficiently is critical for academic and professional success, yet little is known about the behavioral and neural mechanisms that drive some children to acquire these skills faster than others. Here we investigate the behavioral and neural predictors of individual differences in arithmetic skill acquisition in response to 8-wk of one-to-one math tutoring. Twenty-four children in grade 3 (ages 8–9 y), a critical period for acquisition of basic mathematical skills, underwent structural and resting-state functional MRI scans pretutoring. A significant shift in arithmetic problem-solving strategies from counting to fact retrieval was observed with tutoring. Notably, the speed and accuracy of arithmetic problem solving increased with tutoring, with some children improving significantly more than others. Next, we examined whether pretutoring behavioral and brain measures could predict individual differences in arithmetic performance improvements with tutoring. No behavioral measures, including intelligence quotient, working memory, or mathematical abilities, predicted performance improvements. In contrast, pretutoring hippocampal volume predicted performance improvements. Furthermore, pretutoring intrinsic functional connectivity of the hippocampus with dorsolateral and ventrolateral prefrontal cortices and the basal ganglia also predicted performance improvements. Our findings provide evidence that individual differences in morphometry and connectivity of brain regions associated with learning and memory, and not regions typically involved in arithmetic processing, are strong predictors of responsiveness to math tutoring in children. More generally, our study suggests that quantitative measures of brain structure and intrinsic brain organization can provide a more sensitive marker of skill acquisition than behavioral measures.

Will these types of discoveries change education?

More on brain wiring:

Do you obsess over your appearance? Your brain might be wired abnormally

Body dysmorphic disorder is a disabling but often misunderstood psychiatric condition in which people perceive themselves to be disfigured and ugly, even though they look normal to others. New research at UCLA shows that these individuals have abnormalities in the underlying connections in their brains.

Dr. Jamie Feusner, the study’s senior author and a UCLA associate professor of psychiatry, and his colleagues report that individuals with BDD have, in essence, global “bad wiring” in their brains — that is, there are abnormal network-wiring patterns across the brain as a whole.

If a zygote is a person, are identical twins just one person?

I wish I knew what their issue is.

The best explanation I’ve ever heard goes as follows:

“Homophobia: the fear gay men will treat you the way you treat women.”

His website says of him:

Mullen was obsessed with getting that information. President Gerald Ford had replaced Richard Nixon due to governmental coverups, and Mullen fired off a series of letters to Ford reminding him of his pledge to be open with the public. It was time to release those papers. It took multiple attempts, but Mullen eventually got those five thousand documents from Ford as he left office.

To a fledgling writer looking for a best selling book, Mullen had uncovered The Holy Grail. Senior editors from every major publisher in the country contacted him. A movie studio called Mullen and work and told him, “Do not sign with anyone until we get the last bid.”

And then…IT happened.

Mullen was supernaturally pulled from his body by the man whose image was embedded in the Shroud of Turin. The Shroud Man told Mullen, “Do not write that (U.S.S. Indianapolis). Write this.” Thus began a series of supernatural encounters lasting over three decades that resulted in the book, “War of the Angels.” Mullen’s writing career came to a grind and War of theAngels became more than a book. It was a movement. A popular website with a “supernatural” message board visited by millions, WOTA Radio and more.

Now, the Shroud Man is returning Michael to his journalistic roots. He has recently published “Angel of Lake Placid,” and “Adventures of a Bubba in Greater Metropolitan Gnaw Bone.” But the ultimate project being demanded of Mullen by the Shroud Man is, “War of the Angels II: Reign of the Antichrist.”

It is well underway.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I am. I have several ancestors who were in the Revolution, and many of their ancestors were here much earlier.

And, it depends on what one means by “related”. 10th cousin?

Most Americans who have colonial ancestry that significantly predates 1776 will all be related somehow. If your ancestry goes back to 1609 then it will be hard to not be related to everybody else who has ancestors in the 17th century in NA.

Jennifer Rubin goes after Ted Cruz

Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) recent antics in the Senate drew the ire of right-wing columnist and blogger Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post on Monday.

After several Republican colleagues privately confronted the conservative firebrand over his effort to filibuster all debate on expanding background checks, Cruz broke protocol and recounted to a gathering of Texas tea partiers that he had called them “squishes” not worthy of the cause.

“There is being principled, and then there is being a jerk,” Rubin wrote. “Putting down your colleagues to boost your own street cred with the base falls into the latter category.”

Learning math is a strange thing. In my own experience, in high school I was briefly in an enriched math learning program where more advanced material than normal grade-level was taught. At that time, I simply did not get it, at all. Later on, I ended up learning that same material in college without trouble.

It is also remarkable that math is one of the few fields where authentic child prodigies exist —- some few really do seems to be nearly hard-wired for math.

Christianity Today publishes an article that is very similar to one they did weeks ago, covering essentially the same territory … makes me wonder if they are being driven by a doctrinal agenda or simply trying to get web hits knowing it will be a hot topic for their religious readers:

A New Creation Story

Christian homeschool science textbooks have long taught young earth creationism (YEC) almost exclusively. But observers say a growing number of parents want texts that also teach evolution.

“Homeschooling has broadened so much, and now includes many Christian groups who have never adopted [YEC],” said homeschool pioneer Susan Wise Bauer, a history professor at Virginia’s College of William and Mary. “Also, there are a lot of younger evangelicals who have come to a different way of understanding Genesis, while still holding [on to their] evangelical roots.”

Numbers on the trend are hard to pin down. Still, BioLogos president Deborah Haarsma says that it’s “fairly common” for homeschooling families to request materials from her organization, which promotes theistic evolution. Some of these parents still believe in a young earth, says program director Kathryn Applegate, but they want their children exposed to different perspectives.

Doug Hayworth, coordinator of homeschool science resources for the American Scientific Affiliation, agrees. Inquiries to his Christian association reveal not a wave of old-earth converts, but instead frustrated young-earth believers who believe that “the standard [YEC] curricula … are very strident,” said Hayworth, who homeschools. “They’re looking for some advice.

[…]

It’s beginning to look like Templeton (funders of Biologos) are getting their way at CT. Evangelicals are trying to adapt to the modern worldview in some ways, but the bridge is tenuous at best.

However, let’s go on:

[…] Sonlight Curriculum is an exception. It offers a diversity of homeschool curricula that allow parents to teach various theories of origins. “The YEC position is strong and ingrained in the homeschool movement,” said Sonlight president Sarita Holzmann, who homeschools her children and believes in a young earth. “That might be to our detriment.” She says students need to be able to evaluate different positions.

BJU Press, one of the largest providers of Christian homeschooling resources, said demand for its YEC curriculum remains strong—and it already includes other viewpoints. “We don’t hedge on [YEC] at all,” said Brad Batdorf, who supervises authors of 7th to 12th grade curriculum. “We talk about other views … [and] even go so far as to give some scriptures they use. But then we present what we feel is the strongest, most supportable position.”

[…]

That some homeschoolers are looking for non-YEC material sounds nice, until one realizes that they are still in the minority, given what the publishers have said.

Jason Collins wrote a goddamn gorgeous piece there.

He’s also a pretty terrible player.

But that doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter for two reasons: One, he’s still active, Boston might sign him again, and being a ‘terrible’ NBA player means you’re a world-class athlete.

Two, it gives straight athletes who are cool with gay people a chance to step up publicly and say “I’m alright with this. I support this guy.”

And a lot of them are:

Image: 7x8tABe.png

“I am extremely happy and proud of Jason Collins,” Rivers said in a statement on Monday. “He’s a pro’s pro. He is the consummate professional and he is one of my favorite ‘team’ players I have ever coached. If you have learned anything from Jackie Robinson, it is that teammates are always the first to accept. It will be society who has to learn tolerance. One of my favorite sayings is: ‘I am who I am, are who we are, can be what I want to be. [It’s] not up to you, it’s just me being me.’”

30 teams x 12 players a team = 460 total players. There are over 120 division 1 college teams, not counting the smaller schools, and I’m not even counting the international players. I think there are three rounds in the NBA draft every year for a total of 90 players drafted, and maybe 30% amount to anything remotely above average.

My point is that it is pretty fucking hard to make it in the NBA.

I really loved what Rivers had to say. Tying it to Jackie Robinson is great, as is saying that Collins is a team player. Collin’s job is to go in at the end of the game and get six fouls. But he can’t just waste those, they’ve got to be when the drive is about to lead to a score. It’s still a complex job that requires athleticism. And it takes a certain kind of humility to do, and a definite sense of teamwork.

re: #206 lawhawk

Also, there is such thing as Western medicine. It tends to be pharmacologically based long-term, with interventionist responses to crisis. People really do practice legitimate medicine differently in other places, where more of a concept of whole-body wellness rather than a doctor responding to illness, and less of a dependence on pharmacopiea. We’ve actually been trying to promote the concept in the West for quite awhile now, with mixed results. In the US, a lot of the resistance to changing that is the procedure-based remuneration system, which cheats primary care doctors and over-rewards specialists.

It’s a breakthrough, but I don’t rate Collins on Robinson’s level. Jackie Robinson was the ‘first first’, if you will, and broke the color barrier at a time when bigotry was much more open and more openly deadly. Moreover, there is the fact that Collins could conceal or even simply not act on his sexual preferences. Jackie Robinson, by contrast, was visibly black and could not hide who he was.

For those reasons, while I think Jason Collins is a good and brave man and a good athlete, I do feel that Jackie Robinson’s entering major league baseball was a greater feat of courage than Collins’ coming out as gay.

/No disrespect intended, just my two cents.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle relayed pretty much the same story to one of our local radio sports shows here in Nashville (he’s on a couple of times a week and has been for years, since the Oilers moved here and became the Titans) on more than one occasion lately, coming at it from the side of the Negro League players.

I’m paraphrasing a bit here, but some of the Negro League players were being honored in a ceremony up in Chicago some time ago and one of the local Chicago sports reporters (who is a friend of McClain’s) was interviewing them. McClain was sitting in on the interview and Robinson came up, because Robinson wasn’t on the Negro League all-star list; McClain asked about that and one of the players said something to the effect of “Robinson wasn’t a great player in the Negro League, but he was the right player to go to the majors because he was smart and had the temperament to handle the inevitable abuse.”

Ok. If you didn’t have, I was going to say, I have a pair from when I had some foot issues a while back and I could work out how to send them your direction.

I don’t suppose they’d let you return them in exchange for cancelling most of the bill.

Get well, soon Gus. I hope you’ll be able to walk again soon. I also really hope you’re able to get a better bed soon. Maybe that will help you sleep and get rid of some of the pain you’re experiencing. It sounds like you’re having some serious problems.

By the way, did you leave twitter? It seems that you’re account is no longer there.

Thanks. Was thinking about going to a motel for a couple of days. Either that or replace this couch. Yeah, I left Twitter. Can’t handle it anymore. Part of it is the addiction thing. Yes, I’m in pain but my productivity sky rocketed. Just got tired of the constant complaining. Can’t handle that now. I know that might seem ironic to some. Considering.

I didn’t think it would be this bad. My guess is that they’re going to have to go in and reattach whatever I tore up.

Seriously, if there is some kind of Lizard care package that would cheer you up, let us know. I’d be more than happy to chip something in and I think that’s the case for others too. Even if it’s just some badly Photoshopped pictures or something.

I say badly not because yours are bad but because my attempts would be.

I could probably manage a patch of ice in the fires of hell for you.

Ok, I won’t lie, my Photoshop skills suck. It’d look pretty bad. But maybe the thought counts for something.

Funny. I’m trying fire and ice. Heating pad and ice. I like the heat now because it loosens up the flow. Sometimes, often than not, my foot also feels cold. Good times.

Heat is supposed to encourage blood flow.

My feet are just normally cold, except on days like today when nothing is cold. I hate the heat.

That’s why I started doing the heat. Three weeks ago the swelling started from sitting on my butt doing computer work. Plus this weird chair I was using didn’t help. I kind of panicked. Took off the cast and almost felt kind of faint. Started doing heat baths. Keeping my leg up more. Got it on a heating pad now. I hate too hot and too cold. I like warm. If given a choice between too hot and too cold I prefer too hot. I was never like that in my youth. Now that I’m getting older I prefer the hotter climates.

I’m in purge mode. Maybe it’s temporary. I can see a plus side to some of this.

You would probably appreciate CA right now then. Over 90 for the high today. I am just miserable instead. Nauseous, irritable, hot, bitchy, cranky, whatever.

On the plus side (hah), tomorrow’s high is only supposed to be 88.
