Tech Note: New Feature: Refresh ‘Featured’ and ‘Recent’ Pages Lists

Keepin’ it fresh
LGF • Views: 33,372

This here’s a tricky way to do an open thread, and also announce a new feature: if you click the title of the ‘Featured Pages’ or ‘Recent Pages’ list, it will now refresh the list with the latest data for each Page, and any new Pages will show up at the top. With a nice animated fade to make it all pretty-like. No, I don’t know why I’m writing like a hillbilly.

Anyways y’all, that’s the new hotness for the day, and the open thread may now commence to git started.

What, you didn’t get the memo that Christianity gives you (where you is defined to be the male at the head of the family) the right to tell women how/when/where to have sex?

The religious right is thoroughly infested with those who have an unholy desire to act as if they are God and mete out quasi-divine judgement on others. Such judgement is usually nothing but the hatred within the (human) judge made manifest.

Nice to see this made the Dkos Rec list…
The Problem With Watching MSNBC: The Manipulation of Liberals

, MSNBC is not a “Liberal” cable channel, but just another corporate shill. I know accepting that proposition would be devastating for many people who see it as a news oasis in a sea of right wing lunacy, but sometimes the truth ca be bitter.

In fact, what MSNBC and the Democratic party establishment do are probably more damaging to the progressive movement than anything else, as they insidiously pretend to stand up for progressive values, while actually serving their corporatist paymasters’ interests.

What MSNBC does is actually a little scary… They pretend to cover issues of importance to their liberal audience, presenting the information they cover in what it seems to be an intellectual manner, but in reality what they are doing is fomenting tribalism against Republicans, the Tea Party, the NRA, etc., while under-reporting on the most important issue: the bribery of politicians.

Watch a few prime-time news hours of MSNBC, and you’ll be all riled up about those meanie Republicans and “teahadists,” getting in the way of the Democratic agenda. And of course, it follows that if we could only vote those meanie Republicans out of office (in 2014), then we could finally move our agenda forward.

You know, I have to say that I don’t think this is relegated solely to the religious right and I suspect it’s more tied to a need to feel superior and lord it over others (pardon the pun).

There are flavors of the same bullshit in the very strident “you’re all idiots for thinking there is a god” view embraced and then loudly espoused by some atheists.

I long ago concluded that Christians come in two flavors. One uses God and the Bible as a combination security blanket and guide to living a good life, while the other uses them as a club to attack those they would have hated anyway, whether they could find biblical justification or not. I was raised by the former, which gives me nothing but contempt for the latter, since I KNOW that being a believer doesn’t require one to also be an asshole bigot.

It’s true and I agree overall, but I confess that being rubbed a little raw recently by a few of the very militant atheists.

I don’t consider them to be a political power by any means, but just thinking that this is a religious issue won’t address some of the underlying psychological aspects at play, because it can show up without the clear religious tie. Or, at least, the atheist community would have you think that it’s not a religion to them.

This is where I get to be a horrible person to all of them by thinking that human spirituality is a beautiful and personal thing and everyone embraces their own individually and as long as it is not having a harmful impact on someone else’s life, we should be allowed to live in a manner that we see fit without having someone else’s judgement shoved in our face.

Yeah, I’m going to hell.

Rep. Gohmert revisiting his Muslim Brotherhood WH inflitration theory, last time he was on WND Radio, and today he’s swapping conspiracies with Glenn Beck:

mediaite.com

Days after he told WND Radio about the Muslim Brotherhood’s infiltration of the U.S. government, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) went on Glenn Beck‘s radio show to continue his crusade against the Obama administration. Not only did Gohmert continue to promote his theory about the Muslim Brotherhood, but he also went after Attorney General Eric Holder for spending more time “helping terrorists than defending the country.”

… “Think about it,” he told Beck, “when your attorney general spent more of his legal career helping terrorists than defending the country, then you know we all have certain biases and lean certain ways.”

Later in the interview, Gohmert revisited his theory about the Muslim Brotherhood’s “active role” in guiding the policies of the Obama administration, pointing to an Egyptian magazine article, in turn picked up by Beck’s The Blaze, that has made similar claims. “How is it that our intelligence isn’t as intelligent as an Egyptian magazine?” he asked.

Beck immediately bought into Gohmert’s suggestion about the Muslim Brotherhood, but said he thinks our U.S. intelligence community knows all about it. “They have chosen to believe that the Muslim Brotherhood are the good guys.”

Gohmert ultimately summed up the position of Obama administration officials like this: “Either they lie under oath or they do know the extent of Muslim Brotherhood infiltration into our government.”

huffingtonpost.com

Citing an “Egyptian magazine,” Gohmert said that “there are six members of the Muslim brotherhood who are active and are playing a vital role in their administration.”

I think many militant atheists, yes, are assholes. The face of any group will be composed of those loud enough to be heard, or outrageous enough to be newsworthy. But speaking as a nonmilitant atheist, I think it’s about time SOMEBODY pushed back against the tide of militant ignorance and superstition that threatens to overtake this country. Look at the percentage of Americans who believe in Creationism, for example.

It’s so reminiscent of the far right’s anti-communism phase in the 50s, the John Birch Society, etc., with Muslims in place of commies.

One big difference, though, is that for all the Birch Society’s insanity, the Soviet Union was a genuine, no-shit existential threat to the US and the world. They had nuclear missiles aimed at our cities, on hair triggers. There was actually something to be worried about.

These anti-Muslim conspiracy theories are just pure right wing paranoia with no substance at all, though. The Muslim Brotherhood has not infiltrated the government, and they’re not going to, and there’s no danger whatsoever of sharia law ever “taking over” in the US.

There’s a mentality on the right that has a real, deep need to be constantly afraid, and if there are no real threats they’ll just imagine some.

I might posit that’s because all the reasonable people get sick of the shit and go home.

Which leaves the assholes to derp it out into the competition of “who can be the bigger asshole”. This may explain much of our current government, come to think of it. Of course, the downside is that you then have a government where policy is decided by assholes and nothing gets done.

Dear reviewer:

I know that particular model doesn’t produce physically meaningful results for these spectra. I highlighted that fact in my first paper, where I clearly said I was using it simply because it produced the best and most reproducible fit for the peak shape and that I was not looking to the parameters for any sort of physical meaning. Which I then referenced in this paper.

Also, that request for clarification on the error bars? That paper you mentioned in your reply was a) by me and b) dedicated to the discussion of how the error bar numbers were estimated. With a little bit of discussion about how this other group was full of it on a separate topic.

*sigh*

But I will add clarification anyway, because I am a good little paper writer.

Bachmann’s claim that she voted against the ‘sequester’ bill because of cuts to the poor

During the House of Representative debate over the bill that ended the furloughs of air traffic controllers, Rep. Michele Bachmann responded to comments by Democrats decrying the impact of the sequester on poorer Americans, notably reductions in programs such as Head Start, Meals on Wheels and nutrition programs for children.

“That breaks everyone’s hearts,” Bachmann said, before blaming the sequester on President Obama and fellow Democrats. She added that she had voted against the Budget Control Act because she knew such “calamities” would happen.

We searched high and low for any statements that Bachmann made at the time warning about the “calamities” that would fall on the poor because of budget cuts.

What we found instead were comments by Bachmann complaining that the Budget Control Act did not cut spending enough. She especially decried the fact that the debt ceiling was increased, arguing instead that the government could avoid default simply by making immediate and steep cuts. “We needed real cuts and a fundamental restructuring in the way Washington spends taxpayer dollars to solve the spending crisis we are in,” Bachmann said in a statement after the bill was passed. “Someone has to say NO to more spending. I will.”

Wingnut orthodoxy is a good example of a local maximum for getting votes. Small deviations from wingnut orthodoxy tend to cost more votes from lost tea party loons than can be picked up from undecideds in the middle.

My understanding (it was before my time) was that some grad students were fooling around when they shouldn’t have been. We always have the 160L dewers of it in the lab (the magnets go through it to keep the liquid helium cool, because that shit is expensive)

A Post Doc at a company I worked for, with one broken arm, tried to carry several bottles, including concentrated Ammonium Hydroxide, to another lab, in her arms. She dropped the Ammonia, and tried to mop it up with paper towels before somebody grabbed her and got her - and the rest of us - the hell out of the lab.

Then there were the Post Docs in the Yeast group making spheroplasts with a lot of beta-mercaptoethanol outside the hood, wondering why nobody liked them. This was after they lit the lab on fire twice sterilizing the 96-well plate stamper by dipping it in ethanol and running it through a flame.

Then there was the Post Doc who spilled his 32P hybridization mix on the floor and nobody knew about it till we’d all tracked it all over the building. We cut up carpets, and crawled around on our hands and knees with a Geiger and spray bottles of Count-Off.

Post Docs. Not quite as dangerous as grad students.

I knew a Post Doc who did the same thing, but it was an ultra, and the rotor was a Beckman VTi90. One of the more experienced SRAs had been mentioning how much better ultras were than the older models, more tolerant of imbalance - “You could practically run it with one tube!”

I’m not sure how fast it was going when it sheared off the drive spindle, but it made a hell of a racket. Fortunately the chambers of ultracentrifuges are armored.

Amazingly enough, Beckman tested the rotor and it was fine. That was, until the seal on one tube blew at 90Krpm, causing an instant 17g imbalance. Same deal - drive spindle sheared off, banshee howl, bangitybangbangbang, but this time they decomissioned the rotor. AND Beckman sent out a tech guy to train us how not to break their centrifuges anymore.

I work(ed) with NMR.

They sent out a junior tech once to do some maintenance type work, moving the consoles around.

He got one of the consoles a little too close to the magnet.

They had to send a few more techs out after that point.

Liquid nitrogen down the sink? I don’t even WANT to know.

My chemistry teacher in high school made a fun oops where she detonated a piece of sodium in an open beaker of water. Splashed half the classroom with highly concentrated sodium hydroxide. Thankfully, no students were actually hit by the solution, but it was interesting to clean up.

The MSDS sheet just does not always make the impression it should. So-A unique style of safety instruction-Had to teach our guys how to handle & use metallic lithium in alloys. Stuff is so sensitive to oxygen it’s kept in mineral oil. So to show the dangers I put a beaker of water out and added a small chip of lithium. It reacts a few seconds then I toss in a match. Poof, perfect hydrogen flame. The guys at the shop then gave that metal all the respect it needed every time.

He was so stupid, he loved to ram his head into the toilet paper rolls. At which point he would get stuck. And then flail. And flail. And flail.

And then you’d pull it off and he’d do it again immediately. An absolute blast.

It is possible to import parts of a lawn dart - plastic flights, metal bodies, and steel spigots - as well as a complete set of replacement parts to repair damaged lawn darts, into the US and Canada. However, fully assembled individual darts, sets, and kits are banned from entry by US and Canada customs.

I’ve told this story before, but I did exactly that when I was living with my grandparents. I shot an arrow straight up and when it came down I could see it wasn’t moving to the side as it had done every time before (I was an idiot). I ran and hid under the garage eave until it hit the ground.

The ground was damp so I could see where I had been standing. The arrow (practice point) was in between the two footprints.

I have a question for the genetics/history wonks on here.

My Mom’s Dad took a Genetic Test for ancestry a few years ago, and researched it.

The usual popped up. Southern German and Swiss, all of the British nationalities (English & Welsh in the smallest amount.), and a fair amount of Scandinavian from the Nordic-Scots, along with the Normans.

But there was a surprise. Two of them.

a) Mediterranean-area was present, though he couldn’t remember if it was the North or South Side.

b) There was also enough of outlier groups to detect. The outlier groups are Iranian and Levantine Arab, possibly Turkish.

My question is, why are the groups in surprise b there? Is there some history I should know about.

I’m sure if I had an animus though, it would just be farming but who knows what secrets our ancestors hide, I guess that’s why genealogy fascinates me. Thing about migration though it just gets me thinking why jingostic nationalism at its core is absurd. He was the first person from what I understand in my whole family lineage to emigrate to the US so it’s fun to wonder about him. Like what kind of dreams did he have? What were his quirks? What made him laugh? Etc. To me, it’s the human element that makes genealogy fascinating. But you make a good point.

How do you use a Pizza Cutter as a weapon. That seems odd.

It’s why ours is a different nationalism than we see elsewhere. Not immune from bigotry or jingoism mind you but societies like ours where national identity is based more on shared culture aren’t the norm. Hell, it’s fun to think about really. To think about what may have driven in your case your ancestors to go from near Greece towards Germany and such.

Also for “country of origin” is that by the current borders, or the borders when the ancestor supposedly left?

And to complicate things, if it’s the latter do you have to identify the little principality in Italy or Germany that it might have been before things consolidated?

this is one of its most prominent characteristics

altho english is a germanic language branching off from saxon at about 450 AD, it underwent a massive vocabulary replacement from old french in the centuries after the norman invasion. the basic vocabulary remains germanic, however

of course in recent centuries there has been widespread coinage of words for new things derived from latin and greek roots, such as ‘television’ and ‘automobile’

The Islamic presence in Spain did have a number of other visible legacies, including the famous Rock of Gibraltar. Before the Islamic invasion of 711 AD, the straights between Spain and Morocco were called the Pillars of Hercules. The invasion gave the rock and the straights a new name: Gibraltar is a transmogrification of “Tariq’s Mountain” in Arabic, Tariq being the Muslim general who commanded the invasion of Spain and crushed the Visigoths.

True, till the 9th got mauled & sent back to what is present day Nimijin NL and Hadiran threw up his namesake wall. The Celt, Picts & Germanics ate legions on a semi-regular basis, far more than anywhere else.

Rome only held the cities & when they pulled the Legions, the desperate local aristocrats called on the saxons and it went legendary after that.

She did the best with what she had.

I got interrupted and didn’t get to finish my thought.

She did the best with what she had and kicked fuckin’ Roman ass. Just think what she could do today with the tools now available?

Women are Watching.

True but that also provides an important lesson: The enemy isn’t going to give up because you’re doing your best, in fact it will make a quality foe fight you that much harder. The Britons fought the Romans with everything they had, but the legions had evolved tactics to devastate Celtic armies, and the Roman commander Gaius Suetonius Paulinus chose to make his stand at a place where the terrain forced the Britons into a funnel, such that their advantage in numbers was nullified (much like Thermopylae, in fact).

Rome did largely pacify what is now England, it was Scotland they were unable to claim, hence the wall. As long as the wall was manned, it was actually quite effective.

Kept under control perhaps. As for the wall, it’s manning requirements were quite high, especially since - as far as any roman was concerned - you were literally at the far ass end of the world.

Which was the worst punnishment posting? I’d bet a mention of posting to the Wall would have gotten a response ala Col. Klink to a threat of the “Eastern Front” ;)

Possibly, although posting to Hadrian’s Wall was actually a good bit more survivable. Fierce as the Celts and Pics of Scotland were, they never produced a Marshal Zhukov.

True, but imagine the climate up there to someone born in Rome…
