Howard Kurtz Dropped by the Daily Beast

After Kurtz’s weird attack on Jason Collins

In media news, The Daily Beast’s Tina Brown announced today in a terse statement that they are dropping Howard Kurtz.

This move came after Kurtz posted an embarrassingly slipshod and defamatory piece on NBA player Jason Collins:

“The Daily Beast and Howard Kurtz have parted company,” Tina Brown, the site’s editor in chief, said in a statement sent to POLITICO.

The decision comes after Kurtz published a blog post that falsely claimed Collins, who famously announced that he was gay this week in an article for Sports Illustrated, had neglected to mention his previous engagement to a woman. In fact, Collins mentioned that engagement in the article and in a subsequent interview with ABC News. The Daily Beast retracted that post on Thursday morning.

I’m a retired high school teacher, and I can say without reservation that this is a big lie. Most teachers are so busy trying to cover state standards that they don’t have time to discuss guns. I taught civics and U.S. history, and all that was ever discussed in these classes that was related to guns was the 2nd Amendment. I never asked students how they “felt” about guns or gun violence because I was mainly focused on having them remember the content of the 2nd Amendment. That was a tough enough job by itself, without introducing a debate about guns into the issue.

I see in the news that Maryland has repealed the death penalty.

I did my undergrad there and had the disconcerting experience of someone I knew (in passing) being arrested, tried, and eventually pleading guilty to murder. It was a case where they debated going for the death penalty, and I think the plea was in part to avoid that.

Just some random thoughts on it - I don’t have stuff pulled together enough to page it.

Over the years, he has faced allegations of busting the skull of a suspect, beating juveniles, having drugs in a patrol car, stealing from suspects, falsifying reports, conducting an unauthorized car chased where four people were killed and “calling in sick…from Cancun.”

I don’t know how the hell you get fired multiple times from the same job, but the whole story makes me wish that we had some sort of special secure building where we could confine dangerous people who break laws. Maybe keep them there for a number of years so that they can’t inflict themselves on society for a while. I’m pretty sure that if I did any of those things at my job, someone would build a place like that and send me to it.

I’m proud of the sports world.. Jason Collins was embraced by fans and Teams that revealed how much we have matured and accepted gays.
I am disgusted by the hate the GOP and religion has shown..People like Fisher who throw rocks and arrows in the name of Jesus. They have a blistering hate in the name of love.
Who a person loves is no skin off their ass. There is no way God will allow a person filled with hate and judgement to pass through the Pearly Gates.
I am disgusted by their rightousness.

Wasn’t it cool seeing Kobe Bryant offer his support? I’ve always been more into college ball more so than the NBA but the way most NBA players and coaches responded to Jason was awesome. This is a wonderful game.

Funny how America was great to Glenn when we forced children to work, allowed slavery, but oh noes a black guy is president and he favors equality for gays and lesbians and thinks that we needed health care reform, we’re doomed. This guy’s pathetic. I really sincerely doubt he actually loves this country. His idea of America is based on one of exclusion rather than one of inclusion and the America of inclusion is what tempted so many of our ancestors to come to this country.

Yeah people like him are always pining for the “good old days” and indeed it was perhaps easier if you were a straight white Christian male like Glenn is. The problem with people like Glenn and I’d say most prominent conservatives is as I said a vision based on the freedom to exclude rather than the freedom to include. To them, the freedom of homosexuals to marry isn’t a mark of our progress in a changing world but rather something ot be horrified about. I have little doubt that had Beck been on the radio in the immediate years following Loving Vs Virginia, he’d be claiming God wasn’t blessing America because of the overturning of interracial marriage bans.

Dead thread, I know. Opa-Locka is a suburb of Miami (ish) and has a pink Arabian castle as a city hall. Really rough area now. I lived there for a bit more than 30 years ago. It wasn’t stellar then. It’s pretty bad now.
