Howard Kurtz Dropped by the Daily Beast

After Kurtz’s weird attack on Jason Collins
Media • Views: 24,842

In media news, The Daily Beast’s Tina Brown announced today in a terse statement that they are dropping Howard Kurtz.

This move came after Kurtz posted an embarrassingly slipshod and defamatory piece on NBA player Jason Collins:

“The Daily Beast and Howard Kurtz have parted company,” Tina Brown, the site’s editor in chief, said in a statement sent to POLITICO.

The decision comes after Kurtz published a blog post that falsely claimed Collins, who famously announced that he was gay this week in an article for Sports Illustrated, had neglected to mention his previous engagement to a woman. In fact, Collins mentioned that engagement in the article and in a subsequent interview with ABC News. The Daily Beast retracted that post on Thursday morning.

Now Howie will be free to spend more time at CNN, which these days seems about the perfect outlet for his brand of journal… well, whatever it is.

Nugent: Schools Brainwashing Kids to Hate Guns

The ever-articulate Ted Nugent writes at WorldNetDaily today that liberals and their allies in government, teachers’ unions and the media are carrying out a “brainwashing jihad.” He says they are using schools to “vilify guns,” which will help them achieve their “ultimate goal of disarming America.” Just as Saul Alinsky wanted…

From the top:

The decision comes after Kurtz published a blog post that falsely claimed Collins, who famously announced that he was gay this week in an article for Sports Illustrated, had neglected to mention his previous engagement to a woman. In fact, Collins mentioned that engagement in the article and in a subsequent interview with ABC News. The Daily Beast retracted that post on Thursday morning.

Before being ‘retracted’, it was changed to something like, ‘Well, he didn’t mention it enough’.

I’m a retired high school teacher, and I can say without reservation that this is a big lie. Most teachers are so busy trying to cover state standards that they don’t have time to discuss guns. I taught civics and U.S. history, and all that was ever discussed in these classes that was related to guns was the 2nd Amendment. I never asked students how they “felt” about guns or gun violence because I was mainly focused on having them remember the content of the 2nd Amendment. That was a tough enough job by itself, without introducing a debate about guns into the issue.

I see in the news that Maryland has repealed the death penalty.

I did my undergrad there and had the disconcerting experience of someone I knew (in passing) being arrested, tried, and eventually pleading guilty to murder. It was a case where they debated going for the death penalty, and I think the plea was in part to avoid that.

Just some random thoughts on it - I don’t have stuff pulled together enough to page it.

Fox News guest: Scientific ‘enlightenment and reason’ led to the Holocaust

Fox News host Steve Doocy asked Penny Nance, CEO of the Christian activist group Concerned Women for America, if she could make any sense out of why Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx would proclaim May 2 as both a “Day of Prayer” and a “Day of Reason.”

“He comes from North Carolina, which has the 7th highest church attendance, clearly he’s not running for re-election since he’s up for transportation secretary,” she opined. “You know, G. K. Chesterton said that the Doctrine of Original Sin is the only one which we have 3,000 years of empirical evidence to back up. Clearly, we need faith as a component and it’s just silly for us to say otherwise.”

“You know, the Age of Enlightenment and Reason gave way to moral relativism. And moral relativism is what led us all the way down the dark path to the Holocaust… Dark periods of history is what we arrive at when we leave God out of the equation.”

Because the Crusades, The Inquisition, the Salem Witch Trials, etc etc, never happened.

Looks like the Fermi Gamma-Ray space telescope had a close call last year.

NASA has released rare details of a near miss between a delicate space telescope and a disused Cold War spy satellite.

Julie McEnery, project scientist for NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, was alerted to the threat when she received an automatic warning generated by the space agency’s Robotic Conjunction Assessment Risk Analysis (CARA) on 29 March, 2012.

It predicted that Fermi was just a week away from a perilously close encounter with Cosmos 1805, a one-and-a-half tonne Russian spy satellite launched in 1986 which was whizzing around the world at 15,000 mph (24,140km/h). A direct hit would have resulted in an explosion with the force of almost three tonnes of explosive, more than enough to obliterate both spacecraft.

Florida cop fired for eighth time after leaving police AR-15 with friend

The Opa-Locka Police Department in Florida on Wednesday argued before an arbitrator that one of their own officers deserved to be fired — for the sixth time — because he left his department AR-15 assault-style rifle with a friend.

According to WFOR, Bosque has been fired eight times by three police departments in Florida, including six firings from his job at Opa-locka. WFOR noted that Bosque was the “most disciplined, fined, fired, arrested police officer in the state.”

Over the years, he has faced allegations of busting the skull of a suspect, beating juveniles, having drugs in a patrol car, stealing from suspects, falsifying reports, conducting an unauthorized car chased where four people were killed and “calling in sick…from Cancun.”

Beck: ‘Get Ready For More Blood in the Streets, America’

Even though Beck’s own The Blaze reported on the Saudi government’s denial of the claims, Beck never once bothered to even mention it as he instead just continued to cite the original Daily Mail story last night because it fit into his narrative that there is some conspiracy at work behind the bombing.

Ignoring the fact that his new belief that the Saudi government warned the US government about Tsarnaev is seemingly at odds with his other theory that Saudi Arabia was somehow behind the Boston bombing, Beck eventually wound up screaming at a video of President Obama, yelling that “if allowing terrorist attacks to happen after ignoring specific warnings is what the FBI and DHS is supposed to be doing, Mr. President, I want my tax dollars back! Get ready for some more blood in the streets America”:

Heh to be fair to Rhode Island, it’s actually a fairly dense state.

Now there’s a backhanded compliment. :-)

Beck: ‘Get Ready For More Blood in the Streets, America’

Beck’s just a short step away from showing up on a street corner with a cardboard “THE END IS NEAR!” sign.

Florida cop fired for eighth time after leaving police AR-15 with friend

Over the years, he has faced allegations of busting the skull of a suspect, beating juveniles, having drugs in a patrol car, stealing from suspects, falsifying reports, conducting an unauthorized car chased where four people were killed and “calling in sick…from Cancun.”

I don’t know how the hell you get fired multiple times from the same job, but the whole story makes me wish that we had some sort of special secure building where we could confine dangerous people who break laws. Maybe keep them there for a number of years so that they can’t inflict themselves on society for a while. I’m pretty sure that if I did any of those things at my job, someone would build a place like that and send me to it.

Haha. Sorry Rhode Island but my point obviiously is despite being the smallest state size wise has over a million residents.

I’m proud of the sports world.. Jason Collins was embraced by fans and Teams that revealed how much we have matured and accepted gays.
I am disgusted by the hate the GOP and religion has shown..People like Fisher who throw rocks and arrows in the name of Jesus. They have a blistering hate in the name of love.
Who a person loves is no skin off their ass. There is no way God will allow a person filled with hate and judgement to pass through the Pearly Gates.
I am disgusted by their rightousness.

Wasn’t it cool seeing Kobe Bryant offer his support? I’ve always been more into college ball more so than the NBA but the way most NBA players and coaches responded to Jason was awesome. This is a wonderful game.

Funny how America was great to Glenn when we forced children to work, allowed slavery, but oh noes a black guy is president and he favors equality for gays and lesbians and thinks that we needed health care reform, we’re doomed. This guy’s pathetic. I really sincerely doubt he actually loves this country. His idea of America is based on one of exclusion rather than one of inclusion and the America of inclusion is what tempted so many of our ancestors to come to this country.

As is the county I was born and raised in. Pretty amazing though not surprising that one of our biggest land wise states is also one of our smallest in population.

Yeah people like him are always pining for the “good old days” and indeed it was perhaps easier if you were a straight white Christian male like Glenn is. The problem with people like Glenn and I’d say most prominent conservatives is as I said a vision based on the freedom to exclude rather than the freedom to include. To them, the freedom of homosexuals to marry isn’t a mark of our progress in a changing world but rather something ot be horrified about. I have little doubt that had Beck been on the radio in the immediate years following Loving Vs Virginia, he’d be claiming God wasn’t blessing America because of the overturning of interracial marriage bans.

Is it wrong that I am getting enjoyment from Kurtz’s firing?

Plus how many of you imagined Tina Brown’s voice when you read that tweet.

No, that was Charles Manson. It’s an easy mistake to make.

Dead thread, I know. Opa-Locka is a suburb of Miami (ish) and has a pink Arabian castle as a city hall. Really rough area now. I lived there for a bit more than 30 years ago. It wasn’t stellar then. It’s pretty bad now.
