NRA Bans Bleeding ‘Obama’ Target From Convention Floor

Rare attack of scruples
Wingnuts • Views: 41,005

Last February LGF author Coracle posted a Page that got quite a bit of notice, titled Zombie Night at the Shooting Range, an event featuring a realistic, “bleeding” target that looked an awful lot like a zombie version of Barack Obama.

Har de har.

At the time, we had a few people who doubted that this was really supposed to be an effigy of the President. Well, the manufacturer of this lovely item showed up at the NRA convention in Houston this weekend and removed all doubt.

In fact, it was so bleeding obvious that the NRA had a rare attack of scruples and asked Zombie Industries to remove it from their exhibit. Buzzfeed reports: National Rifle Association Bans Bleeding ‘Obama’ Target, Others Remain.

“Someone from the NRA came by and asked us to remove it” a Zombie Industries booth worker told BuzzFeed in hushed tones. “They thought it looked too much like President Obama.”

When asked if the Obama likeness was intentional the worker said, “Let’s just say I gave my Republican father one for Christmas.”

“They are just scared some liberal reporter will come by and start bitching” another booth worker said to men gathered around the booth. “But ya know, he does look very familiar.”

They have no problem with the concept, they just don’t want to talk about them right now.

No, they don’t want to be associated with things that advocate harming the president. Not only is such advocacy illegal, but it also might rile up an Obama hater enough to actually attempt to kill him, and the NRA does know such an assassination attempt would be disastrous for them.

Two thoughts:

a) that’s probably the only motivation that might actually be true
b) why would an assassination attempt on a president that a non-trivial portion of the country despises/thinks is a Marxist socialist Muslim Kenyan terrorist be bad for the NRA when the murder of 20 first graders wasn’t?

I just found this:

I admire Atatürk and Turks: US defense chief

In another article appears this:

“Ataturk is one of the most valuable leaders in the 21st century. The children in the United States know nothing about such a big leader. He should be taught at schools, take part in history books,” U.S. Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel said during a speech at a session organized by the American-Turkish Council in Washington, D.C.

How did that not cause a shitstorm in Washington.

Because the NRA wasn’t associated with what Adam Lanza did, no one was except Adam Lanza. But an attempt on Barack Obama’s life* would be another kettle of fish: Obama’s allies in the press would connect the NRA to such an attempt if such a connection was honestly plausible.

The pressure that would engender would be bad enough, but it would also force the NRA to denounce the attempted assassin* and step back from its rhetoric, at least for a short time. But just doing that would unleash a frothing font of wingnut rage, angry that the NRA “Rejected the opportunity to call for Revolution!!1”. So any assassination attempt on the president would see the NRA getting it from both ends.

*: My posts are focused on an unsuccessful assassination attempt. I am not prepared to speculate on what would happen if some hate-fueled wingnut actually killed President Obama, except to say that such an act would be horrible and ghastly.

re: #13 Dark_Falcon

a) the NRA rhetoric is only serving its financial backers at this point (gun companies are sure making money hand over fist) and not any actual reasonable discussion, so I fail to see how their ‘toning it down’ would be a bad thing.
b) seriously, if the murder of 20 first graders didn’t convince the lunatics in charge at the NRA that maybe a reasonable discussion about guns - or hell, closing some of the background check loopholes - was a useful distinction, why would an assassination attempt do so? Why do you think that they would treat this any different than what happened in Newtown, as being the individual action of one deranged person?

So not really banned, just banished to the status of an insider item.

That isn’t marketing, Varek. It’s a shooting class. It’s about teaching safe handling of firearms and basic rifle principals, not a sales pitch. Best if children learn that at a young age. A child taught what a gun is, how to handle it, but also never to handle one without adult supervision is a child far less likely to be hurt in a firearms accident.

People have to learn, Stanley. Best to do so with low-velocity rounds that don’t make too much noise. Perhaps even with a sound-supressed rifle, if that is legal in their state or locality. Such rifles are legal in Texas, and its possible the depicted rifle is one of them.

Just like I started with. There is no good reason to start a young person with a big loud high recoil gun. I get started at eight years old. Some here are offended at that given the assumption that gun equals bad. Yeah well I really enjoyed hunting and fishing with family. That built on a sense of responsibility later when my family partnered up in a small plane. As a 9 year old I got flying lessons, controls in hand. Both things are quite dangerous if mishandled. the responsibility lesson lasts a lifetime.

re: #121 Dark_Falcon

At this point in gun safety development, it is probably impossible for an accident to happen when all the rules as espoused by the pros are actually followed. Most often more than one rule gets broken in an accident just like it often takes more than one thing to go wrong in a car or plane crash.

So for an accident to happen someone screwed up big. Heh the anti NRA flip side of that tired unhelpful phrase “guns don’t…” —Only in the instance of rule breaking mishandling of the gun does a gun fire by accident. Honestly I have witnessed a number of those accidents at the range, and in those fortunate cases the bullet went harmlessly into the dirt. The rule about muzzle direction prevailed. Seen people in competition against the clock slip on the run and fall with a safety off loaded gun in hand and not fire. So lets say I appreciate how well those rules work even for a day to day cop.

And BTW I really want that one more rule. Universal B/G check for sales and transfers.

Unless instructors follow them the rules don’t matter. If I can find news reports of more than a dozen accidents at NRA classes over the past year then it’s not a one-off problem.

And I’ll go further - it’s not just classes. One of the pages recently posted to this site was of a line of men waiting to get into the NRA conference room. Most were carrying long weapons in cases. Two of the four had the butts of the rifles or shotguns on the ground and had their hands resting across the muzzles.

I think there’s a major problem with the NRA giving lip service to firearms safety, but failing to actually practice it beyond “check the block”.

I remember going squirrel hunting when I was much younger. My family had enough food so I didn’t need to bring home game. .22’s were affordable from my rather minimal allowance.

To make a long story short, I’d sit in the woods and practice my marksmanship by seeing how close I could get to the squirrel without hitting it. There were times when with my bolt action/tube magazine rifle I’d chase a squirrel up the tree with bark fragments urging him on then turn him around and chasing him back to the ground before letting him get away.

Not sure what that says about me, but OTOH, I just couldn’t see killing the critter when we had plenty of beef & chicken (and thus eggs as well) on the farm. The NRA whips up their base by preaching that the basis for the 2nd Amendment was to fight tyranny, but they never define what is meant by tyranny. So to the gun nuts, the term tyranny refers to anything about the government that they don’t like.

As the GOP agenda keeps lurching further out into the weeds, they will lose more elections and the ability to control legislation. When that happens I’m sure they’ll blame their election losses on “tyranny” instead of blaming their own extremism and incompetence.

I would expect so based on way too many other things said here and there, DF.

Some of the most interesting times during my time in Vietnam in 2002 for our adoption was talking to the various vets I met. One fellow working with us was an ARVN NCO, then sent to re-education but released when the Chinese invaded. Both former ARVN & NVA fought side by side then and kicked the Chinese out.

I killed gophers, squirrels, mice and rabbits with both my rifle and my bow but it was seldom. I preferred targets, whether they were a tree or a fence post or something else. It wasn’t until I hit my early 20s that I decided never to kill anything unless I absolutely had to.

I’ve only purposely killed twice since then, both times when an animal was hit by a car and flopping around in pain.

I really can’t cheer the NRA’s gun safety classes when their rhetoric and lobbying effort is centered around (1) making their audience afraid of the “other” while (2) pushing for laws and a society where their kind of people get to shoot at purported “bad guys”—and the latter are heavily coded as brown, urban, poor, non-conservative and deserving of death—with impunity. I mean, you’re safely using a gun, but your entire sense of entitlement and ethos of manly violence makes you a different kind threat.

I mean, the NRA launched a campaign so that domestic abusers and people with protective orders against them—that’s nuts. It’s pretending that gun violence is never intimate violence, stats be damned.

The 57mm was very scary because it fired big (6 lb.) proximity fused rounds. It looked for all the world like the flak in newsreels from WW2. It was designed to shoot down low-flying B-52s and the like and we were clomping around in Hueys, which were flying beer cans by comparison. Fortunately, it had a very bright and distinctive muzzle flash that was a magnet for every fixed wing asset within several miles.
Bad news while they lasted, though.

If my only option was to hunt for food, I would have no problem doing so. Nor would I have trouble protecting my family. However, living where I do, I see no need to adopt the belief others are out to get me and load up on firearms. The probability of being attacked in my house, or on the street is far too small to warrant carrying even a knife.

The statistics are overwhelming that keeping guns around the house makes the inhabitants less safe, not more safe. The people who try to sell the notion that guns make your family safer have to rely on anecdotes for their argument, not facts or data.

Its similar to the person who knew someone years ago who died in a car accident because they were wearing their seat belt and they might have lived if they weren’t wearing the belt, so now they are convinced seat belts are dangerous.

I think I remember you telling me about that when talking about how Vietnam ended up, against all odds, defeating China, a much bigger, better equipped, less war-torn country.

Less war torn but 1) eaten up by the Cultural Revolution BS and 2) No combat experience since Korea. Plus a millennium of hate & distrust of China by those living where we call Vietnam.

re: #161 Shiplord Kirel

The 57mm was very scary because it fired big (6 lb.) proximity fused rounds. It looked for all the world like the flak in newsreels from WW2. It was designed to shoot down low-flying B-52s and the like and we were clomping around in Hueys, which were flying beer cans by comparison. Fortunately, it had a very bright and distinctive muzzle flash that was a magnet for every fixed wing asset within several miles.
Bad news while they lasted, though.

I was in the guard in the late 80’s - in an Infantry BN scout platoon. We were practicing helicopter insertions and at that point we still had Huey’s. Our young gung-ho LT told the “old” CW4 to fly it like it was real…

I’ll never forget that ride - I did actually get hit by leaves off of a tree - and I’ll give the LT credit as despite how green he got, he didn’t spew.

That’s because a lot of science deals in complex systems that fluctuate about a norm, or an outright chaotic system fluctuating about a ‘strange attractor.’

re: #108 Stanley Sea

I am not against correct usage in any way, but back to that photo…it just screams to me that the parent is flexing the power of their rights onto their kids.

The closest I have ever come to shooting a gun is a BB gun. I think I was 10. At some point, I would like to shoot so that I have some feel for what it is.

At the same time, I have watched my grandfather and uncle chew out one of my cousins for accidentally pointing a rifle at someone, when they were taking shots at a raccoon that had been harassing the house. He’s been shooting since he was much younger than I was when laying hands on a BB gun for the first time (and indeed, was older than that at the time of the incident) and goes hunting each year with his dad.

Of course, all I have to offer on this topic is anecdotal evidence. But both incidents have occurred in a family where treating guns with respect goes almost without saying - and is said anyway. I have no idea where my grandfather’s hunting rifle is, but my money is on a gun safe. The gun in that house is for deer hunting, and that’s because my grandparents eat venison.

Kids are kids. You can offer all the instruction you want, but there’s a reason we don’t try children for murder as adults and it has to do with the brain not being fully developed. If a parent wants to offer some shooting experience in an extremely closely supervised session with all appropriate protection (and that does include hearing protection in my book, as someone with tinnitus due to an incident with a set of speakers when I was 3), then fine. But by no means should a child be playing with the gun as a toy ever.

U.N. has testimony that Syrian rebels used sarin gas: investigator

U.N. human rights investigators have gathered testimony from casualties of Syria’s civil war and medical staff indicating that rebel forces have used the nerve agent sarin, one of the lead investigators said on Sunday.

The United Nations independent commission of inquiry on Syria has not yet seen evidence of government forces having used chemical weapons, which are banned under international law, said commission member Carla Del Ponte.

“Our investigators have been in neighboring countries interviewing victims, doctors and field hospitals and, according to their report of last week which I have seen, there are strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof of the use of sarin gas, from the way the victims were treated,” Del Ponte said in an interview with Swiss-Italian television.

“This was use on the part of the opposition, the rebels, not by the government authorities,” she added, speaking in Italian.

This actually makes a lot of sense. The Assad gang would have everything to lose, and practically nothing to gain, from a chemical weapons release, especially on the small scale so far alleged. The rebels, on the other hand, would have little fear of western intervention. They are a loose and very diverse coalition of different groups. It would be very difficult to locate and identify the actual perpetrators, let alone attack them. A rebel group that had managed to acquire such weapons might well believe they could be safely used to gain a tactical advantage in some crucial situation.

re: #189 Bert’s House of Beef and Obdicuts

I hate to keep using my neighbors to make this point, but it’s so easy.

This particular family has lived on the land they own for at least 3 generations. My property used to be part of the big farm they owned, they now own a much smaller piece of land their self proclaimed”compound” sits on. They crow quite often about the gun safety classes all of them have taken.I get the whole hunting mentality, especially as part of a family history, but that usually helps promote respect for guns on some level at least. Fine, but it doesn’t account for kids being kids and not having a clue as to what’s dangerous. For example:

1) When they were 8 and 9 I caught two of the boys(now out of high school, around my son’s age) shooting their guns at the ground at fire ant mounds. The soil here is nothing but rocks and clay, great opportunity for a bullet to ricochet.

2)Same kids, a few years later on the 4th of July got run off by my Husband for shooting fireworks DIRECTLY AT US from outside our 6 ft tall privacy fence.

3)When all the boys were around 12 yrs old, they took my son to a gun safe, opened it, tried to get him to take a shotgun and shoot out windows. My son ran home and told me. I confronted the neighbor who told me my son was lying because the kids didn’t have the safe combination. My son had never seen a gun before and actually drew me a picture of the shotgun shells and the box they came in. He wasn’t lying.

4)I recently found a hunting arrow in my vegetable garden. As I said before I have a 6 ft privacy fence around our backyard. That means someone shot over the fence on purpose.

These are people who claim they’ve had extensive safety training and practice, I shudder to think what they’d be like without it. Maybe some of that training ought to include some “guns don’t make you invincible and you can actually kill people if you’re an idiot” lessons too. The local cops won’t do much about this either, believe me, I’ve talked to them numerous times.

re: #199 Vicious Babushka

I don’t have a problem with toy guns as long as they don’t shoot anything lethal.

I think part of the issue is that toy guns are generally colored bright colors (and IIRC even the black-colored ones contain bright orange parts as a default nowadays.) And if there are also “normal” guns about in bright colors then at that point law enforcement is basically going to simply react to a shape that says “gun” without considering color. Though it seems they already do that now in a lot of places.

If anything, the threat might be to adults/children used to the bright color indicates “toy” association who fall to properly react to it actually being a weapon. Which indicates a need to break the color => toy association without an unnecessary casualty count first.

204 A Mom Anon  Mon, May 6, 2013 5:39:40am

re: #199 Vicious Babushka

Not a fan of the toy gun really, but I was referring to the actual ones that are marketed to kids. You want your kid to have a junior sized rifle, fine, but make it look real then because it is real. A kid seeing a pink or fun colored gun is going to associate that with a toy, not the real deal. Those little Crickett rifles are not toys, even though they could easily be mistake for one.

Marketplace Fairness Act poised to pass the Senate, and may have enough support in the House to see it passed.

The bill doesn’t impose new taxes, or impose an Internet sales tax. It clarifies how retailers must collect and remit taxes already imposed by the 46 states that have a state sales tax. If you’re a brick and mortar retailer in a state, you already collect sales tax. If you’re a .com company and have a physical presence in another state, that company is also collecting sales tax.

This bill would clarify the situation for companies that don’t have physical presence (aka nexus) with the taxing state. Quill v. North Dakota said that states can’t require out-of-state sellers to collect and remit taxes unless they’ve got a substantial nexus with the state (physical presence being one way that’s achieved). States have tried to come up with a way to meet the Quill requirements, but it’s a fact-based analysis and troublesome for both states and retailers. Even the Supreme Court had sought to get Congress to address the issue in Quill.

This bill goes a long way to fixing the problem, though there are details to address - how to make it easier for small businesses to comply or exempt them from the requirement (like those making $1 million or less in annual sales). A company like Amazon has already decided it’s in their interest to support the plan since they’re intent on being a same-day delivery service in many parts of the country (requiring warehouses throughout). EBay is fighting it because the majority of their sellers aren’t large enough (though I think eBay could figure out how to collect tax on the sellers’ behalf).

First 3D-printed gun fired

Creator Defense Distributed said that the 3D-printed handgun, called the Liberator, was successfully fired in its first test at a firing range south of Austin, Texas.

Fifteen parts of the gun are made from ABS heat-resistant plastic, while the firing pin is metal in order to be picked up by metal detectors and make it legal under US law.

The handgun is capable of firing standard handgun rounds and the blueprints for the weapon are available to download from the internet.

Footage of the test shows 25-year-old university student Cody Wilson firing the gun at a target. The student spent eight months creating the gun.

What could possibly go wrong?

LED Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant has taken out a restraining order against a crazed fan after she bombarded him with threatening messages, it is reported.

The rock legend, 64, is even said to have hired a security team in the wake of intensifying harassment from the deluded groupie.

Plant’s alleged stalker, named as Alysson Billings, believes she is in a relationship with the Whole Lotta Love singer, despite never having met him.

Billings has reportedly been harassing Plant for three years – showing up at his concerts worldwide, leaving him hotel keys and sending flowers and random packages.

But her stalking campaign apparently took a turn for the worse after Plant hooked up with his new girlfriend, US folk singer Patty Griffin.

Absolutely.

re: #236 NJDhockeyfan

First 3D-printed gun fired

What could possibly go wrong?

First, the liberator is single shot. Between shots either a new bullet or a new barrel containing a new bullet needs loaded. In the FYI department Wilson tested the barrel on a standard pistol and it lasted for 10 shots.

In the fwiw department, Wilson used a used Stratasys 768 SST printer. Those are going for about $15,000 when they come up on ebay. In comparison to “consumer” quality printers (Cube/Cubex, Makerbot, etc) it can get a little finer vertical resolution (0.05mm vs 0.1mm), has about the same horizontal resolution (0.2mm pretty much all around), and has a heated chamber. The last is kinda nifty: the SST heats the chamber to between 150 and 180 F (actual depends on plastic used) which results in a more certain weld between applied layers. On the other hand, if you buy a CubeX and put a heat-bulb and thermostat in its chamber you can achieve the same results.

I haven’t been able to find (yet) how much plastic the liberator uses. If I assume it’s ~750 grams I can use the CubeX cartridge(s) as baseline (that’s the rough quantity per cartridge). I’d use the ABS entirely, and I’d use about 1/3 of a PLA cartridge for the supports. PLA dissolves in a sodium hydroxide (lye) solution with the optimum strength being around 3.5 moles. (No significant gain in speed for stronger solutions.)

CubeX cartridges cost $99 each, so that’s a bit less than $133 each. I can use a modification (risks warranty) to use alternative ABS and PLA off a spool. If I purchase that it’s going to cost ~$45 per kg, making the cost of the pistol around $45. If I go the extra mile and download and build or purchase a filament maker (~$299), ABS and PLA pellets run around $5-$6 per kg, making each of these pistols cost around $6 each. Assuming, again, ~3/4 kg each.

Cost of pistol excludes proportional cost of machine. The duo head Cubex (needed to apply both ABS and PLA) can be gotten for $3,500, though you should expect retail at closer to $4,000.

The Original Nathan’s location in Coney Island has been closed since Sandy struck just over 6 months ago as the ocean flooded the building and turned Surf Avenue into surf (complete with sand too). Owners have vowed to rebuild and reopen before the summer season as well as to host the annual hot dog eating contest on July 4. Those plans may have taken a hit.

Today, a fire hit the iconic storefront while construction was underway. No word on the damage or whether it will further delay rebuilding/reopening efforts.

FBI busts another homegrown terror suspect. Molotov cocktails, pipe bombs and at least one firearm were recovered from the home. And is it surprising the guy had a felony record and shouldn’t have been in possession of any firearms?

Buford Rogers, 24, was arrested Friday and charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He remains in federal custody and it is not clear if he has an attorney.

In a news release Monday, the FBI said it believes “the lives of several local residents were potentially saved” by the search and arrest. The agency said the terror plot was in its “planning stages” and was discovered through analysis of intelligence gathered by local, state and federal authorities. The statement doesn’t offer further details about the extent or manner of the alleged plot.

“Cooperation between the FBI and its federal, state, and local partners enabled law enforcement to prevent a potential tragedy in Montevideo,” Christopher Warrener, the special agent in charge of the FBI office in Minneapolis, said in Monday’s release.

According to a federal affidavit obtained by The Associated Press on Friday, FBI agents from the domestic terrorism squad searched the property at the mobile home park in Montevideo and discovered the Molotov cocktails, suspected pipe bombs and firearms. The affidavit said Buford was there at the time of the search, and one firearm recovered from Buford’s residence was a Romanian AKM assault rifle.

In an interview with authorities, Rogers admitted firing the weapon on two separate occasions at a gun range in Granite Falls, the affidavit said. Rogers has a past conviction for felony burglary and is not allowed to have a firearm.

No patio capability, and I have to be home to let them run around the apartment hall for a little bit. (They did get a run on Saturday.) The roommate is always about for impromtu wrestling, ambushing, and chasing of course.

Might need to get some cat grass for them. The catnip plant is there (and thriving), but they generally leave it alone unless I pick off leaves for them. And if she decides she wants to munch on the young herbs (basil, dill, thyme) I might get a bit cross.

The plants have generated another sport for her. I have some fungus gnats around and they come and hang out by the light in the den at night. She perches on the arm of the couch and bats at them if they come low enough. And I get a low-power fanning effect from her swishing her tail back-and-forth so hard.

They’ve Lost Fox And Friends: GOP Claims Of Benghazi ‘Cover Up’ Collapses

On Monday, the trio of hosts invited Rep. Jassen Chaffetz (R-UT) — a regular fixture on cable television and a critic of Obama’s handling of the September 11, 2012 attacks — to discuss the House Republicans’ upcoming hearing with three witnesses who claim that the administration prevented them from speaking out about the incident. “We were certainly misled at every step of the way,” Chaffetz said, arguing that officials manipulated the findings of the Accountability Review Board, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice’s talking points, and told military officials on the ground not to interfere or protect American interests during the attack.

The hosts then tore into Chaffetz’s theory, wondering if Admirals Thomas Pickering and Mike Mullen, who headed the review, the entire CIA, and Republican-appointed officials could all be “complicit” in such a massive conspiracy:

BRIAN KILMEADE: Are you saying that admiral Pickering and Mullen are complicit because they did the review board? Are you saying that the CIA is complicit because they allowed their talking points to be edited? … What about Admiral Mullen and Pickering? Why would they sacrifice their reputation for a report that isn’t accurate? […]

STEVE DOOCY: Congressman, it sounds like what you’ve described, it sounds like there has been a cover-up, but what were they trying to cover up? […]

GRETCHEN CARLSON: But Congressman, it’s an interesting question because it does involve so many high-level people. You had the former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta — who was revered by both sides of the fence — coming out and saying, ‘hey, we couldn’t have gotten anybody there.’ So you have him on the line. You have former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Susan Rice, President Obama, Admiral Mullen. Would all of these people go to bat just to get President Obama reelected?

KILMEADE: What about David Petraeus?

Chaffetz couldn’t offer a convincing answer, initially blaming the media for failing to report on the cover-up and then saying that the ongoing investigation will reveal the motive.
