The cut-out font examples are amazing in this. A lot of work, and it really paid off. One of the best short intros to the history of typefaces I’ve seen.

My total knowledge base on typography has just increased by at least 2 orders of magnitude. Now have yet more points that I can pull out during one of the meaningless trivial geek-discussions we have at lunch.

Who DID NOT appreciate the swipe at Comic Sans however….

After several episodes, I am getting very attached to the Doctor’s new companion.

I hope he produces more of these. Since setting type is now in the hands of everyone with a computer, it would help to spread the knowledge of typography around a bit more.

Rachel Maddow really loves diamond heists.

That’s because her writers wrote that last night or this morning. Her reading off the teleprompter was filmed probably 12 hours ago when that was the big story of the day.

A 5 hour nap and I am still tired. Can’t tell if there’s a fever because I can’t find the thermometer. :(

Versus what, Benghazi? I mean, what was the big news story today?

Cleavland?

Yeah, but what’s there to really say about that? It’s fantastic that they’ve been recovered, but it’s not a story one can do any real indepth analysis on - there’s just not enough information out there now, and I think as opposed to some news channels, she tried to keep speculation to a minimum (from the little I’ve seen, I don’t typically watch her show).

Tesla profit tops forecast, lifts sales outlook

DETROIT (Reuters) - Tesla Motors Inc reported its first-ever profit that trounced Wall Street estimates on Wednesday and forecast global demand for its Model S electric car could surpass 30,000 vehicles a year.

Tesla reported adjusted earnings of 12 cents per share, triple the 4 cents per share expected by analysts, on average, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. The first-quarter results sent shares up 17 percent in after-hours trading.

Tesla now expects to deliver 21,000 Model S cars worldwide, up 5 percent from its earlier target of 20,000. But Tesla said it was already receiving orders for the Model S at a rate of more than 20,000 per year.

140 hours of work

Spending 140 hours to make a 5-ish minute video. I can’t imagine what it’s like to enjoy something that much. Nor even to care about it that much. After about hour 2 I would be angry that it’s taken so long, compounded by the persistent question of “WHO GIVES A FLYING FUCK ANYWAY?!” This is why have never and will never amount to anything.

Once you get into the flow of making something like that, time just disappears, and you only become conscious of it when you get hungry or thirsty, or your neck gets too stiff to keep going.

No, she’s a woman. The slurs against her will if possible start with some good ole’ slut shaming and comparing her to Sandra Fluke by Rush Limbaugh, before moving onto Glenn Beck DERPing about how women are being duped into supporting Democrats by “government handouts like Obamacare”, followed by Bryan Fischer wondering aloud why a mostly male police department should be lead by a woman, and concluding with Ann Coulter saying that Chief Lanier ‘should have stayed home and baked cookies’.

You’re probably not far off but I will humbly remind you that Rush Limbaugh is the man who popularized the term Feminazi so he’s not above comparing women to Nazis. Really, what the hell do these guys expect with their stupid little rally? A rally with tons of people with guns in a crowded city where there’s fireworks is just asking for trouble but I think that’s what the guy who started it wants.

The organizer is on record as saying anyone who enforces gun control is a traitor who deserves death, and had people pile in supporting him.

Yeah, this march will go without a hitch.

Just so. He aims to put Chief Lanier and the other law enforcement within DC on the horns of a dilemma:

If the police turn the march back, the march’s organizers will say they “thwarted the will of the people”.

If the police make arrests, then the scream of OBAMUNIST REPRESSION!!1” will be heard.

And if the march is allowed to proceed, it will be seen as “proof of of the collapse of the Obama regime.”

In the highly unlikely event that gunfire actually ends up being exchanged, honestly I don’t know what will follow, except that it will be very bad.

Very few people in this country are fanatical to that degree. But we have observed how it only takes a couple hundred ‘black bloc anarchists’ to turn a 10,000 strong protest into a (perceived at least) riot.

I mean damn guys. I’m in DC a ton. The town’s crowded even on normal days. I don’t think I’ve ever been in town for the 4th because the city just packs up that night. At least some of these guys will be traveling on the Metro rail and a bunch of armed people on the Metro is just asking for trouble. This is nothing more than an attempt to troll the DCPD and claim tyranny if they’re detained or even questioned.

51 FemNaziBitch  Wed, May 8, 2013 8:54:48pm

I honestly don’t expect any violence with this march or whatever it is. I’m hoping law enforcement keeps a tight handle on the crowd. That is probably, IMHO, where any possible problems may come from. That is, any initial perceived threat would come from the crowd, then the paranoid in the march would take action.

52 FemNaziBitch  Wed, May 8, 2013 8:55:51pm

Then again, I also spotted a couple Army snipers on roofs while in DC the last time we were there. It was kinda a game we were playing. City’s under a lot of control.

I’m not really worried about violence per say either but I just don’t like the idea of a bunch of openly armed people in a crowded city. They’re asking for trouble. This is the 2nd amendment version of yelling fire in the theater if you ask me.

It wouldn’t be so bad if the march actually emulated the “well-regulated militia” part of the 2nd Amendment, but too many participants are likely to be “Nobody tells me what to do on my day off!” yahoos. I suppose the best we can expect is that the march organizers will make sure the participants are all sober.

Judging by Mr. Kokesh’s plans to appear on Alex Jones tomorrow, I think you’re right that they’re likely to be those types. I hope the organizers keep it safe but I have my worries. It’s just a terrible idea to hold the rally on a day like that.

re: #40 Kragar

I suppose I should clarify.

The Bangladesh situation is simple to understand. Government refuses to listen or heed the demands of Islamists, so they start rioting, and the police start shooting.

In Libya, the Muslim Brotherhood was given a staggering defeat in the elections by a Left-Wing-ish party consisting of war veterans and defectors from the Qaddafi regime.

The MB have not dealt with this well. First, they tried to cut that party out of government making, resulting in a massive blowback. Then, they started supporting the militias and pushing for a law that bans anyone who was in any government job (at any level) during the Qaddafi regime. The government gave them the law. However, the government is trying to set up a proper military. This resulted in some of the militias blockading the entrance to several ministries, resulting in a handful of resignations from frustrated Ministers.

Just today, there was a militia threat on Prime Minister Zeidan. The MB is actively trying to overthrow the fledging government. The Chairman of the NTC during the war, Mustafa Abdul Jalil, has outright stated these thugs are not loyal to Libya, but the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

Fortunately, several of the cities seem to be opposing this:

And Pro-Government Revolutionaries are coming out again.

King Abdullah II of Jordan needs to take heed of this. He will be overthrown if he doesn’t proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood.

Things are getting so bad politically in Egypt that a number of the Liberal Parties are considering cooperating with the Salafis in the next election.

And in a weird turn, the Salafis are open to it. That is how Authoritarian and corrupt the Muslim Brotherhood is. They are forcing polar opposites to align against them.

There is a not insignificant chance that the next election will produce a Government Coalition similar to the one currently in Northern Ireland between the Hardline Unionists and the Hardline Republicans.

Right now, Libya is dealing with a problem we didn’t have to back after our own revolution: An outside 3rd Party trying to topple the Government.

Shockingly, even with this, Libya is still doing better than either Egypt or Tunisia, both MB dominated right now.

And the MB is less popular in Tunisia than it is in Egypt. Which is impressive.

When looking for some opinion on the DC police chief, I found this dopey NRA press release. I had totally forgotten about this particular story:

Gun grabbers have been exploiting the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., to pursue their long standing agenda of disarming America. Law abiding and responsible gun owners are fighting back against the onslaught. NBC anchor David Gregory acted on Sunday as if D.C. firearms laws didn’t apply to him. He brandished a 30 round rifle magazine on “Meet the Press” during an interview with National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. “Isn’t it just possible that we could reduce the carnage in a situation like Newtown?” Mr. Gregory asked while waving the prohibited object. A ruthlessly enforced city ordinance makes it unlawful to possess magazines with greater than a 10 round capacity. NBC staff had contacted the Metropolitan Police Department in advance seeking permission to violate the city’s rules for the stunt. According to a spokesman for Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier, the request was denied. Mr. Gregory went ahead anyway.

Egypt could go that way.

Our immigration system needs fixed now. We need to be able to take in more refugees and non-H1ers.

Have a yearly thing of amount, say 2.25 Million a year (.75% of the US Population).

1.25 Million of that yearly quota goes to normal immigrants.

1 Million goes to Refugees, who we will try our damn hardest to keep and make citizens.

In addition, have a clause for emergency situations, like Syria, or as part of peace treaties, to allow in other refugees as needed.

So sick of anyone who wants to have a reasonable discussion on this issue being labeled a “gun grabber.” Yeah, because I want background checks on people buying weapons that are designed to kill living things, I’m a “gungrabber.” Okay assholes, that’s rich especially considering your leadership actually wants to ban video games and movies that have violence in them. The NRA’s such a shitty organization. I respect firearm ownership. I do not respect the NRA because their sole purpose is to scare gun-owners by acting like the smallest bit of reasonable action on the issue is somehow analogous to the worst tyranny.

re: #72 ProBosniaLiberal

Egypt could go that way.

Our immigration system needs fixed now. We need to be able to take in more refugees and non-H1ers.

Have a yearly thing of amount, say 2.25 Million a year (.75% of the US Population).

1.25 Million of that yearly quota goes to normal immigrants.

1 Million goes to Refugees, who we will try our damn hardest to keep and make citizens.

In addition, have a clause for emergency situations, like Syria, or as part of peace treaties, to allow in other refugees as needed.

Not going to happen. Allowing in large numbers of non-Christian people from the Middle East would meet with widespread and violent opposition. It would never pass either house of Congress.

Well, I don’t see the need for the march in the first place. But that is just me.

You and me both. I am just saying that if they have to do it, they’re doing it on a terrible day and just asking for trouble which from what I know about Adam Koklesh is exactly what he wants. I doubt he wants actual violence but he does want a confrontation so he can whine about the “tyrannical” DCPD.

Ironically, from a much more terror-prone group than potential migrants.

We’ve had what, 3, maybe 4 Islamist Terror Attacks in the US since 9/11.

Meanwhile, we a huge number of Far-Right incidents in the last 5 years that have killed far more than those other minor incidents.

I’ve never liked them but I am careful to separate individual gun owners from the NRA. For one, I just don’t like generalizing people and two, a lot of my older extended family are and were gun owners. I respect the second amendment but the second amendment does not say that arms are never to be regulated ever. I mean sometimes you just need common sense in a society that has a dis proportionally high amount of firearms deaths. I also tire of the comparison of guns to cars. Yes car accidents kill more Americans but I’d like someone in the NRA to acknowledge just once that a car’s not designed for killing, a gun is, whether that’s a person or an animal, it makes no difference, it’s designed to kill. I’ve got no problem with ownership but the primary purpose of guns is to harm another life. Sorry for the rant. Just gets annoying hearing NRA stooges made ridiculous claims.

And that is not even touching Norway, where a Tea Party influenced nut killed 8 in the Bombing of Government Quarter, and then gunned down 69 kids and supervisors on Utoya.

I still remember the photos of the dead on the shore from the live feed. I remember the faces of the dead. I remember seeing a last name from my family in there 3 fucking times.

I blame the Republican Party and their Tea Party terrorists for those dead.

Kokesh is a libertarian I believe. Big Ron Paul guy. He was the guy who started that hoopola over getting in trouble at the Washington Monument for dancing. I have to admit, that pissed me off too when I saw it but knowing how people like that operate in hindsight, I imagine there was more to it than his video showed.

Don’t. The anti-Islam haters in Europe bear more blame than anyone “across the pond”. But most of all, Blame Anders Brevik. He wasn’t some unstable type like Holmes or Lanza; He planned his murderous rampage long in advance and prepared for it meticulously. He is the person who conceived of the plan for mass murder, prepared for it, and then carried it out. Thus before any others, blame him.

Even the Heller (?) decision included “regulation” as a responsibility of the government —no?

Whackos don’t want to acknowledge that. Frankly their refusal to engage in any conversation is hurting them.

I learned tonite in class that anyone served with Protection Order (meaning the Judge has determined there is enough evidence that the person being served is a danger to the petitioner) in the State of IL is to have their FOID card revoked and guns taken away for the length of the order. —Which never happens.

In this particular case, the gunowner can go to court and have the order rescinded (probably the wrong vocabulary word) in order to keep their guns —because guns are a special thing legally speaking.

Now, I know one reason for this is that there is no reasonable guarantee the gun owner would get the guns back. —we don’t have a system in place for this —WHY?????????

Clearly, we know abusers do shoot and kill their victims —often with children in the house. We also know that some abusers get help and change their ways and some are sometimes wrongly accused.

This is an insane situation that puts the gun ownership over the life of a woman. (and well being of the children).

All I can do is shake my head.

I think the thing that gets me the most angry thinking about Brevik is the attempts to rationalize it. Fucking Beck comparing those kids to Hitler Youth members or the inane claims that had the victims been members of a right wing youth organization that the left would have been cheering including POTUS. And moreover, the Republican party isn’t a monolith. Many in the Tea Party have praised Grover Norquist, yet Norquist is a supporter of immigration reform and has had to endure many attacks from Islamophobes for his having a Muslim wife. So Norquist is fully Republican, but cannot be said to bear any blame for Brevik’s ideology, since Norquist has consistently that sort of religious bigotry.

I can’t bring myself to read very much of this:
pjmedia.com

Progracists promote open borders and mass immigration not for any humanitarian concerns about poor people in foreign countries but only because they see new immigrants as a huge voting bloc to keep progressives in power.

Progracists want you to forget that some historians have defined the Ku Klux Klan as “the terrorist wing of the Democratic Party.”

Progracists think minorities in urban areas are too irresponsible to stop littering, so progressive-dominated local governments want to ban plastic bags for everyone even though most people don’t litter.

A growing number of African-Americans believe that progracists want to make abortion freely available to poor minorities specifically to commit slow-motion genocide of the black community.

Progracists always accuse everyone else of racism to deflect attention from their own racist policies and beliefs.

re: #134 Dark_Falcon

Well, if any of them were to actually make a multi-mile march in Revolutionary War garb on a warm-hot day in May while carrying a Rev. War replica Pennsylvania Rifle, then those who had done so would actually be worthy of respect, since they’d have shown real endurance.

But of course, they’d still be outnumbered by bozos with AR-15s the bozos don’t know how to fight with and various “tacticool” items of clothing. A fool and his money…

Right, I am just thinking more about their complete lack of historical perspective. None of us, even the most educated in the subject matter will ever truly be able to understand what the thousands of men who signed up for military service during the Revolution went through. You can wear the most authentic clothing but you’re never going to know the everyday emotions of wondering whether today will be your last, if you’ll ever see your loved ones again, etc. These people are just couch warriors.

Instead, read about Afghanistan’s rather notable “Fuck You!” to Pakistan. Shame it had to mean goods being shipped through Iran, but it is nice to see Pakistan get a much-deserved backhand. It’s actually at the bottom of the page, so I’ll post it here:

May 4, 2013: After months of negotiations India has agreed to spend $100 million to upgrade the Iranian port of Chabahar and Iran would allow Indian ships to move cargo in and out of Afghanistan via Iranian roads, railroads, and the port of Chabahar. The Pakistani port of Gwadar is 72 kilometers east of Chabahar but Indian relations with Pakistan are too unreliable to allow use of Gwadar (which is now controlled by Chinese firms). During 2004-9, India spent over $70 million to build a 218 kilometer highway from Kandahar (the major city in southwest Afghanistan) to the Iranian border. That connects to Iranian roads and railroads that go the thousand kilometers to Chabahar. This gives Afghanistan easy access to the ocean without going through Pakistan (and its bandits, corrupt officials, and unreliable politics). Afghanistan likes having close relations with Pakistan because both India and Afghanistan have had problems with Pakistani hostility and support of Islamic terrorists.

What used to happen on their old system was that I would argue with Zombie and be banned from the thread after 6 comments, so every idiot would get their stupid say in and think they’d chased me away with their superior logic.

Zombie is also a pathetic liar. I listened to a speech by Robert Reich at Berkeley, and she was sort of listening I guess and wrote a whole article lying about what he was saying and calling him a communist.

I remember when Reich was Secretary of Labor. Even then you could say he barely had that much power. Everything still went through the proper channels. Right now he’s just an opinionator. He even makes my eyes rolls many times. How anyone can be so paranoid enough to ascribe so much fantastical power to an individual is beyond me. A communist? LOL, that’s Zombie’s typical schtick. More like socialist lite. And very lite that is. People have their opinions. I don’t think Reich is taking over the world anymore than Erick Erickson is taking over the world. People like Zombie and their ilk need to breath into a paper bag because it’s pretty obvious that they’re hyper-ventilating over nothing.

Quite the contrary, Scotland has become more free since Scotsmen started wearing their dresses.

One of the reason that the English banned the wearing of the plaid, which was acutally a nine-square-yard bolt of cloth is that a Scotsman with a plaid, a claymore and a gun could live free in the hills, hunting and scavenging, sleepin both in and under his plaid, which was voluminous enough to drape over a branch as shelter and roll up in the rest.

There are progressive racists, but they weren’t so racist that they lost their minds. She was the one who is that racist, not us, her.

Ni man hao, mein scaly drughi!

Progress on the doomstead continues, and rather nicely, too.

What with the warm and remarkably clement weather - okay, there were a few days of rain here and there, for which I was grateful, even if they did delay somewhat the construction - I’ve been able to finish the first-floor walls and install the bond-beam and the beams to carry the roof.

A few more weeks, and the main house shell is finished!

And to think, there were those who argued that a house-raising that entailed progress of not more than, say 18 inches in wall-height per full day’s work would take too long. Let them laugh, let them snicker, but I’ve got an earth-sheltered structure with three-foot thick earthbag walls damned near complete.

About to turn 40, and what with the construction work and the commute (by bike, 10 miles each way, 6 days a week) and all the rest of it, I’m in the best shape of my life.

Ahh! The simple life, the cheap life, the low-impact, low-cost life! I recommend it to any and all.

Yep, the funny thing is that the human capacity for attention is never diminished, but only changed in its objects.

In the developing world, clean water and enough to eat occupy most people’s every waking moment. In the developed, post-industrial world, we devote no less effort and attention to the hunting down of things, often trivial, and usually utterly insignificant, about which to worry and fret. Man is a strange animal.

Ah now THAT makes some sense. Zombie is in a state of panic and vigilance, she hasn’t sanely adjusted to a life of safety.

Of course the problem isn’t really that humanity CAN’T handle safety, it can’t possibly be a coincidence that the majority of wingnuts are extreme religious nuts. They mostly believe that God will send everyone who thinks the wrong thoughts to hell to be tortured for eternity. That’s not safety from a psychological point of view, that’s actually a source of stress so great that most of them have broken down and lost sanity as they got older and become bigoted, paranoid messes.

Or, alternately - and this a theory to which I’ve subscribed in a sort of half-hearted way for a while - Homo sapiens is ideally adapted to a high-stress, threat-filled environment, and, in the absence of obvious and genuine threats, must recreate that primal environment wherever he finds himself, in much the same way as astronauts must bring with them a simulated or condensed version of their earthly habitat (water, a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen in appropriate ratios, etc.). It may be that we somehow need this sort of thing, and can and will make it when it’s not otherwise present to us.

Well, I’m talking in general, seeing in their fantasies of danger traces and relics of what Burroughs called “our glorious simian heritage”. That individuals within the species find unique and even - if viewed from a distance safe enough to preclude our being harmed by it - amusingly pathological ways to express this is just part of the rich variety of life.

Which is to say, those destroyed by delusions and fairy tales would be even more likely to have been done in by, let us say, a pack of hyenas or the drying-up of some primordial watering hole on the veldt from which we all sprung. Perhaps, indeed, these tens of thousands of years of comparative safety and plenty have paradoxically made our species less hardy than once we were.

This is absolutely and completely and, I’m afraid, rather obviously false. Read Sapolsky’s very accessible “Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers” or “A Primate’s Memoir” for an explanation of why not. Basically, high-stress environments depress our immune systems, and the constant presence of such stress is something that we try to avoid and are much healthier when we do.

Not only that, but the death toll from the factory collapse has now topped 930+.

And I doubt any Bangladeshi official knows how many factories were built illegally - or operate under unsafe conditions by any rational standard (insufficient exits in case of emergency, locked exits, overloaded floors and structural problems, etc.).

The factory collapse occurred because of the owners’ greed. They wanted a bigger factory and crammed in extra floors illegally atop a design meant for five stories. Then, even after warnings from their own engineer who thought there was problems with the structure, the owner said for workers to get back in there and made threats to boot. Just hours after the engineer went on tv about the problems, the building collapsed.

Nearly a thousand people died in an eight story building.

A government that was powerless and turned a blind eye to public safety in buildings didn’t have the means or ability to shut down the factory or demand fixes before people were let back in. Again - greed and avarice play a role. The garments have to be made and it’s a huge part of the country’s economy so anything that might be seen as hindering the industry can’t be allowed - even if it threatens public safety.

That’s an attitude that must change - not only in Bangladesh, but elsewhere around the world that treats workers like disposable trash.

For now. One of the sub-branches of 3d printing is in clothes. Yes, some are absurd. But there’s this bikini out there that - no, it’s not the article of clothing, it’s the material. The “resin” is a form of nylon, and so that’s what the bikini is made of. So we’re looking at 3d printers producing clothing within the upcoming decade.

Add to it another company, Modern Meadow, which is bioprinting. The meat side of this is another story, but related to the clothing issue is that they’re printing leather. (Still in startup, but the technique works so it’s just making it roll for “out in the world.”) Implied is that vegetable fiber is also printable. (cotton, linen, etc.)

It’s quite possible that some people will lose their employer-based coverage in the short term as a result of healthcare reform.

I think this may have a long-term benefit though in the sense that it will make it perfectly clear that, at the end of the day, most employers don’t really give a shit about their employees beyond what they’re required to do by law.

It’s all about the “if”.

FoxNews and the RWNJs are busy acting as though the facts all indicate that the Administration did wrong, when all they have is nothing but supposition and the media other than Fox knows that supposition isn’t the same as fact.

There’s no there, there. After all the hearings, all the reports, have shown nothing to indicate a coverup, no scandal, and that’s even as the DoD and State had issues with their response (and began charting how to fix and reduce the response time).

When Congress refused to fund - and indeed voted to cut funding - security that could go towards the Benghazi mission and others around the world, that had direct repercussions. That’s outrageous, but also incontrovertible. The GOP did cut funding.

Remember when this guy was at a congressional hearing on 9/11 and turned around to talk to family members of the victims to express his apology for the government’s failure to prevent the attacks? Do you remember how Republicans loved him for his “honest caring” about the “truth”?

Clarke was sharply critical of the Bush administration’s attitude toward counter-terrorism before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and of the decision to go to war with Iraq. Following Clarke’s strong criticisms of the Bush administration, Bush administration officials and other Republicans attempted to discredit him or rebut his criticisms, making Clarke a controversial figure.

An eight story building that was approved to be five stories…greased palms made three floors magically appear and nobody noticed. I wonder if that inspector’s other projects were looked at after this tragedy. No I don’t. I am pretty sure I know that answer.

Topologically, Bangladesh shouldn’t have more than two story buildings as they do not have the needed type of ground to sink a foundation. They could do what Montreal did (inject gas into the ground to freeze it - a freezing process that will last 10,000 years) but it is expensive.

You’ll see this type of thing for as long as they look at their people, as you said, as disposable.

Nazi-themed opera production canceled in Germany

I am really torn on this. Is this glorifying Nazism? If not, why would this be canceled? How many survivors of the Holocaust remain? Why would you not want this for, well, forever? Fifty years from now, no one who was a part of WWII will be alive. Will this go down the rabbit hole of denial a la David Irving?

I realize that Germany has a different perspective, for it originated in their homeland. But not reminding humanity of our darkest capabilities does what exactly?

249 Bulworth  Thu, May 9, 2013 7:39:58am

The Benghazi hearing has made me nostalgic for how RWNJ treated other whistleblowers and confronters of government:

Beck: You know, it took me about a year to start hating the 9/11 victims’ families. It took me about a year. Um, and I had such compassion for them and I really, you know, I wanted to help them, and I was behind — let’s give them money, let’s get them started, and all of this stuff. And I really didn’t — all the 3,000 victims’ families, I don’t hate all of them, I hate about, probably about ten of them. But when I see 9/11 victim family, you know, on television, or whatever, I’m just like, ‘Oh, shut up.’ I’m so sick of them. Because they’re always complaining. And we did our best for them. And again, it’s only about ten.

I think it has something to do with the sub-ground (or whatever it is called…hubby is into that and explained it to me, his bro travels the world doing these types of studies for both governments and private industry). I would think that, while Mexico City might be built on a lake bed, what is 50, 100 or even 200 feet down? North America has bedrock, clay, and the like. Erik Rush: Obama Likely ‘Orchestrated the Attack’ in Benghazi and ‘Deserves to Be Occupying a Cell in Some Federal Penitentiary’

In his WorldNetDaily column today, Erik Rush claims that President Obama likely “orchestrated the attack” on the compound in Benghazi “given his connections to the Muslim Brotherhood and legendary understanding of all things Islamic.” He offers no evidence as to why or how Obama “arranged for the assault on the compound,” but that’s par for the course at WorldNetDaily.

Rush cites the “Trinity United murders,” which according to far-right lore was Obama’s move to murder his former gay lovers he attended church with, as proof of Obama’s record of “grave criminal action.”

“Depending on the outcome, measures might be as severe as charges filed against Cabinet officials or the impeachment of Obama himself,” Rush writes. “While this president reasonably deserves to be occupying a cell in some federal penitentiary anyway, impeachment presents many troublesome aspects.”

But he warns that impeachment proceedings against Obama will “ignite civil unrest,” which Rush claims is actually Obama’s plan all along!

Heavily saturated clays according to Wikipedia. With subsidence issues due to water being pumped out of them. Which in an active earthquake zone is like building on jello. I think Deb is correct about “floating” foundations for the large buildings - though the Wikipedia page for Felix Candela doesn’t mention it.

If it’s sand instead of clay the sand compresses to fairly high stability a couple hundred feet down. If I recall correctly one of the Brooklyn Bridge support piers is actually resting on sand instead of bedrock.

Interesting.

And so Issa, left with no evidence yet of anything “covered-up,” continues to push the idea that the White House not handing the GOP a campaign issue to run on is a crime in and of itself. His committee didn’t really want to touch the issue of increased security, since he’d have to address why Congress didn’t take steps to remedy any perceived inadequacies. And they didn’t find anything new about the attack itself that could be shown as criminal activities on the part of the administration. So they settled on the “lies” of the initial response to the press and changed the target to Hillary, who their perceive as their greatest threat come ‘16.

An ad for this appeared on the top of the front page when I arrived this morning.

On September 11th, 2012, four Americans made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. While serving at the United States Embassy in Benghazi, their lives were thrust into harms way when the building came under attack by radical Islamists. Instead of conducting an investigation to find answers and demand accountability, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has worked overtime to protect her own political future. She even refused to participate in the investigation! The American people deserve answers!

SIGN OUR PETITION AND DEMAND THE TRUTH

329 wrenchwench  Thu, May 9, 2013 8:57:37am

In other news, a lot of people don’t know that when you click on the ad, it costs the ad buyer money, and creates more income for the site the ad appears on. Win-win! (The site’s owner is not allowed to share this information.)

Six Take-Aways from the Census Bureau’s Voting Report

Today’s report from the Census Bureau on the diversifying American electorate in 2012 confirms an historic turnout milestone first noted last December by the Pew Research Center, but undercuts a number of other widely-reported demographic analyses of last year’s presidential vote.

1. For the first time ever, the black voter turnout rate in a presidential election exceeded the white voter turnout rate—66.2% versus 64.1% . .

2. Hispanics continue to punch below their weight… .

3. Youth voter turnout rates also declined from 2008 to 2012, contrary to initial reports based on the national Election Day exit polls, which had shown the youth voter turnout rate holding steady. …
. .
6. Non-whites were 26.3% of all voters . .

Think it was Krugman that I read the other day pointing out that if most workers waiting until they could pay cash on a home, they wouldn’t own their first home at today’s prices until they were into their 60s. That people borrow all the time, hell it’s what we do when we use credit cards. Problem comes when we borrow so much that we can’t pay it back and end up bankrupt. It doesn’t even rise to that level. They don’t even believe these people have earned the right to be here, after decades of hard labor and working to build a better lives for themselves. Why? Same reason that white plantation owners wouldn’t accept that help being an American citizen: They didn’t like the idea that the people they’ve been taking advantage of would suddenly be equals in the eyes of the law. In their minds, there’s two kinds of people: “Us” and “The Help.”

re: #380 Targetpractice

The same goes for items like cars, home improvements, and other higher priced goods (refrigerators, washing machines, high end tvs, etc). They’re often purchased on credit - meaning that you create a debt with a bank or credit card company that the purchaser must repay over time.

Oh, and then there’s the corporate world. You’ve got Apple is taking on billions of dollars in debt so as to avoid repatriation taxes it would otherwise owe on money it is holding offshore. The company will actually make money by making that offering too (as will the brokers handling the transaction on either end, as well as the investors who buy/sell/repackage it).

Pat Robertson, Who said ‘The Lord Told Me’ that ‘Romney Will Win,’ Urges Viewers to Beware False Prophets

On today’s episode of the 700 Club, Pat Robertson urged viewers to avoid false prophets and televangelists caught up in scandal. “By your fruits you shall know them, what’s their track record?” Robertson told cohost Terry Meeuwsen, “You can dominate somebody that way: I’ve heard from the Lord, I have a message for you, do this.”

Funny he should mention this, because just today we stumbled across an interview between Pat Robertson and televangelist Benny Hinn the week before the presidential election where Robertson bluntly informed Hinn that “the Lord told me” that Mitt Romney would defeat President Obama.

Not only did God inform Robertson that “Romney will win” but that he will be a two-term president who presides over a huge economic boom.

You’re probably thinking of Gaylord Perry.

Ryan was a bonafide badass pitcher who still holds about a dozen records in MLB (career strikeouts and no-hitters being the most recognized two) - and beating the hell out of a 20-years younger Robin Ventura in one of the most famous brawls in baseball history.

He’s currently the owner of the Texas Rangers, and is widely credited with their turnaround from being a mid-level franchise to one of the leagues top-rated teams.

U.S. first day infant mortality rate is tops among industrial nations

The United States has the highest rate of first-day deaths in babies than any other industrialized nation, according to a report released this week by the humanitarian group Save the Children.

Throughout the world, the first day of life is the most hazardous time for a baby; just over one million children die each year within 24 hours of being born.

Save the Children’s annual “State of the World’s Mothers” report ranks 176 countries on levels of well-being among children and mothers. This year’s edition puts a special emphasis on newborn health, featuring its first-ever Birth Day Risk Index. The index ranks countries from the safest to the most dangerous for a baby to be born in.

In the United States, babies are 50 percent more likely to die on the same day they were born than in all of the other industrialized countries combined, according to the report. Each year, nearly 11,300 babies die on the day they were born in the United States, making American babies twice as likely to die in their first 24 hours as European Union babies.

So of course to solve this problem we must repeal Obamacare and hand over even MORE power to the health insurance companies.

Right?
