And Now, the Benghazi Talking Point Bombshell That Isn’t

The only government talking points in history that were ever revised - not
Politics • Views: 36,884

ABC News jumps into the shark tank and panders to the right wing base (hey, eyeballs are eyeballs) with an overheated report on the Benghazi talking points that emerged in the immediate aftermath of the attack on the CIA’s outpost: Exclusive: Benghazi Talking Points Underwent 12 Revisions, Scrubbed of Terror Reference.

ABC’s “exclusive” appears to be the mind-blowing fact that government talking points aren’t written off the cuff. That they are often subject to revisions, and sometimes inter-agency politics comes into play.

Does anyone seriously think this is news?

But the detail that’s spurring the right wing blogosphere to new heights of hysteria and conspiracy-mongering: a reference to Al Qaeda was removed. In the feverish wingnut imagination this is proof of …. something nefarious by that Obama guy.

Like the final version used by Ambassador Rice on the Sunday shows, the CIA’s first drafts said the attack appeared to have been “spontaneously inspired by the protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo” but the CIA version went on to say, “That being said, we do know that Islamic extremists with ties to al-Qa’ida participated in the attack.” The draft went on to specifically name the al Qaeda-affiliated group named Ansar al-Sharia.

Once again, Nuland objected to naming the terrorist groups because “we don’t want to prejudice the investigation.”

Of course, wingnut world knows better than to believe this flimsy excuse.

Breitbart psycho hack John Nolte is yelling about a “red-hot smoking gun,” but he does that all the time.

Greg Sargent’s piece hits the nail on the head; what these revisions actually do is confirm that Susan Rice simply echoed the assessment of the intelligence community.

Ben Armbruster makes another great point:

… Absent in ABC’s report is the key point that Obama and various members of his administration referred to the Benghazi assault as a terror attack on numerous occasions shortly after the incident (thereby negating the need to “scrub” any references in the talking points) and that then-CIA Director David Petraeus said the terrorist references were taken out to, as the New York Times reported, “avoid tipping off the groups” that may have been involved.

Moreover, an update the ABC report undermines the notion that Nuland’s motives were campaign related or political:

A source familiar with the White House emails on the Benghazi talking point revisions say that State Department spokesman Victoria Nuland was raising two concerns about the CIA’s first version of talking points, which were going to be sent to Congress: 1) The talking points went further than what she was allowed to say about the attack during her state department briefings; and, 2) she believed the CIA was attempting to exonerate itself at the State Department’s expense by suggesting CIA warnings about the security situation were ignored.

In other words, ABC’s “exclusive” reveals a turf battle, not some cover-up.

Yup. Another bombshell turns out to be a dud.

Why not just admit it wingnuts, you want Obama to be ruined by this and you don’t care what it does to the country. All you care about is removing Obama but even then you won’t be happy because then you’d bitch about Biden and whomever Biden would choose as his VP.

‘Twelve revisions’ is quick-and-dirty for any document that crosses cabinet agencies. The lunch order probably gets redone 6 times.

(Owe you a tipjar hit for the morning hatemail.)

It’s not just cabinet agencies. Every scientific paper I’ve ever been on went through multiple rounds of revision even before it hit Internal Review. The only time any release doesn’t get revised multiple times is when there’s only one person doing it, and even then it would be rare.

My most recent one (one co-author) was 4 drafts before submission and now 3 on reviewer comments.

This was actually pretty good.

Hell, the responses to reviewer comments undergo multiple revisions, though that’s often to remove any references to their lack of reading comprehension, or questioning their parentage.

I am testing here at work whether or not some documentation I put up in a shared location was read. I referred to the location of power switches on some equipment as being located “just next to the thermal exhaust ports fan outlets”.

Since it is still technically a draft I probably won’t get dinged too much for being “unprofessional”.

39 kerFuFFler  Fri, May 10, 2013 11:48:34am

I just can’t get over the nothing-burgeriness of this whole kerfuffle. Wingnuts say the “cover-up” was meant to keep Americans from realizing that it was in fact a terrorist attack, but ultimately it was deemed to be one and Obama won his re-election handily in spite of it. What possible harm came to the country by letting the investigation come to a conclusion before officially calling it an act of terror?

Then some insist that the sinister aspect of the administration’s role was that “assistance” was not sent in. Well, it turns out that some was indeed sent in, but some additional guys are saying they should have been sent in too. There is no reason to believe their presence would have changed the outcome even if the guys themselves may think they have super-powers.

I’m sure there are more fantasies about other “criminal” aspects to all of this, but it seems like the real tell in the wingnut Benghazi craze is that they keep jumping from one to the other hoping that one of them will stick. The other tell that wingnuts have already made up their minds that something criminal occurred is that before having heard the desperately awaited testimony, they are absolutely sure that it will be damning enough to force Obama’s resignation or impeachment.

then-CIA Director David Petraeus said the terrorist references were taken out to, as the New York Times reported, “avoid tipping off the groups” that may have been involved.

This is what I’ve been saying all along. If there was ever any “cover story” it was because they were in the middle of an investigation and didn’t want to blow it by talking too much to the media. Police investigators do this all the time, but the CIA, FBI, and State Department aren’t allowed to? It’s astounded me that this is apparently too adult a notion for these hacks. But then again I forgot… there’s a black man in the White House.

FACTS MUST BE REPORTED

THIS IS THE IRON LAW OF NEWS

49 lawhawk  Fri, May 10, 2013 11:52:47am

A turf war between various agencies. Where have we seen that before. Oh right. Before 9/11, during and after 9/11, the Iraq war, the hunt for OBL, post OBL, Benghazi, and even the Boston bombing.

Bureaucratic infighting continues to exist, despite the fact that failures to share information can lead to tragic and devastating outcomes. It explains a lot, as does the fact that State developed multiple statements about the events in Benghazi.

Anyone want to go back and look at the statements from 9/11 in the minutes and hours and days after the attacks? It’s all there in the 9/11 Reports, but here’s the condensed version.

Planes get hijacked and air controllers are struggling to figure out what’s going on and where the planes are heading. They alert NEADS. Fighter jets are put on alert.

First media references? Local NYC media covering the NYC primary elections report explosion at WTC. They go on air indicating something internal or a plane crash. Not sure.

Minutes later? They go live with report it was a plane of some kind.

The WH is informed that a small plane has hit the WTC.

NSA Rice then revises to say a commercial plane has hit the WTC; that’s all they know.

Then the 2d plane hit.

Even after the 2d plane hit, speculation that this was some kind of tragic accident, but reporters begin realizing this is a terror attack.

Reports of a fire at the Pentagon. Later learn that it was the 3d hijacked plane.

4th hijacked plane later crashes at Shanksville PA after passengers move to retake cockpit to prevent further damage on the ground.

In the fog of war - and Benghazi was indeed a situation where the facts were indeterminate and subject to revision, getting information in a timely fashion is key, but so too is updating what is known or unknown. At the same time, you’re not going to want to broadcast information that might tip off those who were behind the attacks. That’s why information was added, then removed and edited.

It doesn’t show a conspiracy. It shows how a bureaucracy like the State Department works.

This is just how they operate——they specify a day in the future when they will reveal their “bombshell” evidence, and then they keep saying until the day in question that they have extraordinary evidence. After several days, most all any of their viewers remember is that there must be a lot of compelling evidence for the conspiracist’s theory.

Boehner: Release Benghazi Emails

Speaker John Boehner is calling on the White House to release a series of key emails related to Benghazi following Wednesday’s hearing on the attacks.

“We learned that on September 12 — the day after the attacks and four days before [U.N. Ambassador] Susan Rice’s TV appearances — a senior State Department official emailed her superiors to relay that she had told the Libyan ambassador the attack was conducted by Islamic terrorists,” Boehner told reporters during his weekly remarks.

“The State Department would not allow our committees to keep copies of this email when it was reviewed. I would call on the President to order the State Department to release this email so the American people can see it.”

The Ohio Republican went on to say that the White House has claimed it made “stylistic changes” to Rice’s talking points, but it failed to mention that senior officials directed the changes to the talking points.

“Last November, the President said he was ‘happy to cooperate in any way Congress wants.’ This is his chance,” Boehner said. “The truth shouldn’t be hidden from the American people behind a White House firewall. Four Americans lost their lives in this terrorist attack. Congress will continue to investigate this issue, using all of the resources at our disposal.”

Uh, DF? Weren’t you just saying that Boehner would be the responsible one and not feed the impeachment talk?

Goes to their belief that Obama is as bad or worse than Carter when it comes to foreign policy. In their minds, Benghazi should have been his Hostage Crisis, the moment when they could stand up and thump their chests to the American people about how “strong” they are on terror and how they’ll “protect” us. But the media “protected” him and made Republicans look bad for not waiting til the bodies went cold to politicize the deaths of four Americans.

Let’s see. The Israelis said it. Then, US officials issued cautious announcements that Assad might have used chemical weapons. The UK followed suit. The UN said that they see that someone used them, but initially fingered the rebels before retracting that claim. Then the Turkish government said that Assad used them and urged action (though denouncing the Israeli airstrikes against targets inside Syria that may have included missile systems being transferred to Hizbullah). Now, we’re back to US officials saying that it’s happened.

It’s looking more and more likely that Assad has used them in selected circumstances, hoping to avoid international intervention by avoiding widespread usage, but the weight of evidence is piling up that his regime is using them (though his country hasn’t signed the Chemical Weapons Convention).

Their endgame is that the American people realize that all political philosophies save nativist conservatism are bankrupt and evil. They rise up and drive out all impure influences. A single party state is then formed and the proper people hold power forever.

The new America will then impose freedom on the rest of the world whether the rest of the world wants it or not. Probably not because if they were smart and good, they’d be Americans.

The amazing thing is that to criticize his thesis, you don’t even have to bring in ethical concerns about equality. His presented data does not lead to the conclusions he makes, and his initial assumptions are not justified. You can’t leap from IQ testing to heritable intelligence linked to ethnicity…the latter is so hypothetical and unlikely (ethnicity is so poorly defined) that barring actual genetic research to back it up, the leap is entirely unjustified. You can’t just handwave environment, test bias, and other factors as his thesis does…but then create a conclusion that treats those variables as suspended rather than merely dismissed by fiat.

Basically, the only way to go IQ—>genetic intelligence and circumvent is to be a racist shitheel.

I have been wondering lately if there is anything that the Republican party has contributed to this nation for the last five years OTHER than enacting symbolic gestures in the House that are intended to be rejected by the Senate, silliness like wasting days reading the Constitution aloud in Congress instead of reading it on their own time before starting their job as Democrats do, staging witch hunts, and manufacturing fake scandals.
