Saturday Jam: XTC Live on Rockpalast, 1982

Her little tune is such a happy song
Music • Views: 29,664

A great YouTube discovery via Dangerous Minds, here’s a 1982 performance on German TV’s Rockpalast by XTC, a band that almost never plays live. It’s a shame that Andy Partridge hated touring so much — he’s really a good performer (and never got enough credit for his guitar playing).

This is a full concert, and the video quality is remarkably good considering how old it is. I took the liberty of setting the start time at one of my favorite songs:

“No Thugs In Our House”

The insect-headed worker-wife will hang her waspies on the line;

Her husband burns his paper, sucks his pipe while studying their
cushion-floor;
His viscous poly-paste breath comes out,
Their wall-paper world shattered by his shout,
A boy in blue is busy banging out a headache on the kitchen
door.

And all the while Graham slept on,
Dreaming of a world where he could do just what he wanted to.

No thugs in our house, are there dear?
We made that clear,
We made little Graham promise us he’d be a good boy.

No thugs in our house, are there dear?
We made that clear,
We made little Graham promise us he’d be a good boy.

The young policeman who just can’t grow a moustache will open up
his book,
And spoil their breakfast with reports of Asians who have been
so badly kicked,
Is this your son’s wallet I’ve got here?
He must have dropped it after too much beer.
Oh, officer, we can’t believe our little angel is the one you’ve
picked.

They never read those pamphlets in his bottom drawer,
They never read those tattoos on his arm.
They thought that it was just a boy’s club badge he wore,
They never dreamt he’d cause folks any harm.

The insect-headed worker wife will hang her waspies on the line;

She’s singing something stale and simple now this business has
fizzled right out;
Her little tune is such a happy song
Her son is innocent,
He can’t do wrong,
‘Cos dad’s a judge and knows exactly what the job of judging’s
all about.

That is amazing to see for the reasons you cite, Charles.

In case anyone misses this, from downstairs.

Before I go, I must say there are times I miss this place. There are some pretty good folks in here.

And for the record, I don’t give a rats ass about Benghazi, I still like Obama, support Obamacare (notwithstanding ass backward implementation) and I still hope the GOP will find itself because we won’t do well without decent opposition.

Oh yeah, one more thing- Obama has done a stand up job re national security- from Guantanamo to warrantless wiretaps. Don’t have to like things to understand they are necessary.

OK, last thing- Kerry was a bad choice for SoS. He’s no Hillary.

I feel much better now.

The IRS business is looking like another non-troversy in terms of “scandals.” If anything, it has the potential to blow up in the faces of Republicans, as the Tea Party groups claiming to be victims were applying for tax exemption under a classification that applies only to social welfare groups, namely 501(c)(4). You know, the classification that has been the subject of criticism by both sides of the aisle for being abused endlessly by groups linked to the other side.

In short, the “scandal” is not that extra scrutiny was applied, it’s that the “wrong” people were subjected to that scrutiny.

My folks, predictably, are wild about the show. Whenever they visit, it’s on our TV. It’s entertaining, but not my first choice of program. Speaking of which, the ‘rents will be here next weekend and I will be sure to endure at least one more wingnut rant over the duration. Sigh.

Been working on the LGF software infrastructure today. Getting rid of evil function calls like eval(), and debugging some JSON encoding routines that weren’t producing valid JSON in some edge cases.

Some of the JSON-producing code in our older modules was written before PHP had its lovely, super-easy json_encode() function. The days when real men coded JSON with IF/ELSE statements. That code is now being refactored to take advantage of the latest hotness.

Clara is becoming more aware something is going on, but not sure what yet. Apparently, these adventures are happening every Wednesday. She’s still got her old life she is doing the other 6/7ths (not really though) of the time.

Cybermen have been made scary again, the cross-pollination between them and the Borg from Star Trek can be thanked for that.

Also, it does appear that the Doctor is getting attracted to her. Thank Heavens. That means River get put on a bus.

And next week is the big one "Name of the Doctor." End of the season.

In short, the “scandal” is not that extra scrutiny was applied, it’s that the “wrong” people were subjected to that scrutiny.

Yes and no.

Most important point: the IG’s report is to be released this upcoming week. Anything you see is stuff from a partial draft the AP got hold of and claims and allegations from various interested parties.

The scandal is that organizations were selected on a political bias. That’s literally against the rules.

The report will tell us if it’s a major scandal or just some stupidity that needed cleaned. If it was sanctioned, if it was under instruction, that sort of thing, then it’s a major scandal and some people had better be facing termination. If on the other hand we’ve got a group of idiots with a first tier supervisor and as soon as the Powers that Be found out they went to work cleaning it up, it is not a scandal.

Of minor relevance is whether Shulman, the director at the time, knew. See, he testified to Congress in October of 2012 that there was no such thing going on - as far as he knew. The question in that regard is whether the IG tells the director ongoing investigations and status. If so, Shulman did indeed lie to Congress, which is (yes) a scandal. I say minor, however, because of a small fun fact. Shulman was appointed by W. The director position is one of those 6 year “don’t touch” positions meant to try and keep politics out of important functions. Barring identified malfeasance Obama could not have fired Shulman — and just as important his term of office ended in November of last year. No replacement has been offered to the Senate so it’s yet another acting head.

There is a little scandal. And when facts come out there might be more scandal. But it’s not a presidential impeachment level offense.

Republicans: Obama Must Take Action in Syria So We Can Criticize Action He Took in Syria

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—A growing chorus of Republican lawmakers are demanding that President Obama take some action in Syria so that they can attack whatever action he took in Syria.

Appearing on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) laid out the situation in stark terms: “The time for President Obama to do something in Syria that we can eviscerate him for is long overdue.”

Arguing that there are a variety of options available to Mr. Obama for dealing with Syria, Sen. Graham said, “The President needs to choose one of those options so that we can immediately identify it as a catastrophic choice and demand that he be impeached.”

Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) used an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” to express impatience with Mr. Obama’s “steadfast refusal to give us something new to rake him over the coals for.”

“The American people have grown weary of my nonstop criticism of the President’s handling of Libya,” he said. “They are ready to hear me incessantly berate him for his handling of a different country.”

At the end of his television appearance, Sen. McCain seemed to draw a line in the sand, making a direct challenge to Mr. Obama: “Mr. President, we are sick and tired of attacking you for your inaction. The time has come for us to attack you for your action.”

Arguing that there are a variety of options available to Mr. Obama for dealing with Syria, Sen. Graham said, “The President needs to choose one of those options so that we can immediately identify it as a catastrophic choice and demand that he be impeached.” Heh

Did you get a DM from her? She replied to mine with the same info, said she misses her cats :) I wonder who’s been looking after them all this time? It just occured to me that if a pet owner lives alone, and something happens to them, the pets are pretty much stranded unless someone else can check on them!
