Whoa! Obama’s Twitter Account Includes a “Fallen Eagle”

More: Whoa! Obama’s Twitter Account Includes a ‘Fallen Eagle’

Whitehouse Twitter

The official Whitehouse Twitter account has this as their page, and now the RWNJ Blogs are going berserk with it. It’s actually a picture of the ceiling of the oval office taken from the perspective of someone standing facing toward the presidential desk.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Jim Hoft without our daily dose of derp, so here it is — hold on to your hats (and stomachs)…

Islam often makes use of symbolism to flaunt the destruction of non-believers.
Now, Obama does too.

Of course, if the dumbest man on the internet bothered to actually look at the full image, he might have noticed that it was a picture of President Obama sitting at his desk in the Oval Office.

I haven’t figured out whether Hoft is really that stupid, but his audience certainly is. I know a guy who SHOULD BE smarter than that, but he sent me one of Hoft’s posts claiming Obama used an electric pen to sign condolence letters to the families of soldiers killed in action.

It took me all of 30 seconds to see that the signatures, though similar, were each unique in the details. I pointed this out to my friend, who didn’t email me for a while.

When he did, several months later, he sent ANOTHER Hoft post, with the SAME PICTURES, slamming Obama for sending form letters to the families of soldiers killed in action.

As if any President DIDN’T send form letters!

Since November, the governor has been traveling the country, looking a lot like a 2016 presidential candidate. Check out where he’s been so far.

I just realized that March 29, 2013 was the 40th anniversary of the withdrawal of US combat troops from Vietnam. If only Bush had served there instead of getting a cushy stateside deployment courtesy of pops, maybe he would’ve known better than to invade and occupy Iraq.

Holy fuck, on things I didn’t expect to read:

Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex.

My respect for Angelina Jolie just went through the roof. This is a topic I have struggled with - I have a family history of breast cancer on the maternal side, and I’m sort of waiting for the day my mother calls me to say that she’s been diagnosed. I haven’t decided whether I should get tested or not - and if so, what it means. For someone of her stature/position to come forward with this…

Wow.

28 goddamnedfrank  Mon, May 13, 2013 10:08:55pm

re: #27 klys

That must have cost a fortune. Unfortunately since no federal law mandates insurance companies pay for prophylactic mastectomies most women will be at the mercy of their plan’s actuary. Not to mention being able to afford all the missed work for the actual procedures and recovery. I applaud her for coming forward, but it does highlight the disparity class and wealth bring in terms of healthcare options.

Oh, for sure. Her ability to do what she did was based on what money she had saved away - especially since she is in an industry where body image matters so much (especially for women). I don’t deny that at all and I would love to see a system where that was less of an issue. (Believe me, health care and its costs play a consistent role in discussion of retirement options in my household, because to enjoy retirement travel *together* means I am likely retiring before Medicare - assuming it still exists when I get to retirement age.)

But knowing that, to come out as she did - that hopefully paves the way for and will help some women out there make a decision similarly. It at least has reminded me of the role of genetic testing and what it might mean for me. And it’s something to weigh as I consider whether to do it or not.

So the surprise trip with the husband this weekend ended up being down to Big Sur, and we had massages at Esalen. Mine was outdoors (wonderful, having soaked in the springs over the cliff where you could hear the waves).

This is a problem, because I am pasty-pale McPaleson. I don’t tan, I lobster. It ain’t going away.

So now the sunburn is in the itchy phase (she did use sunscreen as a lotion, but it took longer to get to one side than the other) and I’m still not 100% sure we’re going to avoid blistering. But it was a really damn awesome massage anyway. She popped something on the neck and it was wonderful.

This rant is brought to you by a commercial for the iPhone camera.

We went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Sunday. The number of people with their smartphones pressed to the glass in the jellyfish exhibit - and not actually seeing the exhibit because they were too busy taking what will be shitty quailty photos with their smartphones - was beyond belief.

I go to places like that expecting to have to deal with other people’s children. To deal with adults behaving childishly, with no idea of their impact on other people, is a whole different level of frustration.

On the bright side, outside in the harbor, we got the chance to see a mother and pup otter eating within 30-40 ft. And fewer idiots with their cell phones.

My favorite is people who take their iPads along as cameras. Why look at something in real life when you can have a 7” version on a touch pad? And of course, eye level is never just right, so they have to hold the damn things above head level and strain their necks to see where they’re pointing the damn things.

Just …don’t get me started.

The J.J. Abrams on Jon Stewart is gold. Although I can summarize it as “Star Wars was designed as an epic a la Joseph Campbell” and “Star Trek was designed as an episodic television series”.

You’re welcome.

60 Vicious Babushka  Tue, May 14, 2013 4:16:49am

Today is not starting out well.

I found Zedushka passed out in the garage. I called EMS and told them he was a diabetic slipping into a hypoglycemic coma. They came out to the house and put some sugar in him and he came to. Then I made him eat a big breakfast.

I’m at work now but our grandson is coming in from Cincinnati this afternoon so I have to go and pick him up at the bus station since I don’t think Zedushka should be driving a car.

He takes about a thousand different medications for his diabetes but none of it is worth shit if he doesn’t remember to eat and keep his blood sugar stable.

I did not realize that when diabetics get hypoglycemic they act like belligerent drunks. Zedushka was acting all weird yesterday, I should have called 911 then but he kept screaming at me. But this morning I had no choice.

I can answer that.

Being ‘strong’ is a part of pretty much a part of every Western idea of masculinity. This causes guys to think that if they’re taking medication for something they are ‘weak’. So they tell themselves, “I can handle it,” and quit taking their medication or do other things necessary to treat their medical problems. With predictable results.

As a man absolutely dependent on medication to maintain his mental health, it’s something I’m too aware of. Too often I stopped taking my meds because ‘I’m fine now.’ Which resulted in me falling into darkness and having to claw my way out yet again.

I’ve managed to break that behaviour pattern, but it took a lot of work.

Yes, I’m a camera snob.

My weekly walk photos are from an iPhone. Though I am still looking into getting a dedicated camera since while the iPhone can get a quick photo it does leave a lot to be desired in terms of zoom and certain lighting conditions.

And I also pass by a lot of potential photo opportunities because I know the iPhone won’t be able to hack it. Even if I do the cropping and some editing afterwards.

I’ve told my husband it’s kinda hard to be manly when you’re, oh, I don’t know, DEAD. The man has had THREE angioplasties, has type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and that’s just what I know about. After the first heart attack I did all the right things, cooked good healthy and tasty food, walked with him, etc. And then I found all kinds of fast food trash in his car and said the hell with it. I love him madly, but I will not be the food/exercise/doctor appt police. Nope, I have two kids, I’m not his mom too.

And now it’s off to the vet to find out why my doggie has fluid filled lumps on her back legs. Hopefully it’s just bug bites or stings, and that it doesn’t cost a lot. BBL.

Re: cameras, iphones (and other smartphones), iPads, etc.

We’ve got 4 cameras. I’ve got the big gear - a Canon 60d with multiple lenses (never can have enough good glass, and I’m looking at upgrades). You simply can’t match the quality of having a good lens system and flexibility. The Mrs has an advanced point and shoot, and we both have smartphone cameras.

Smartphones are good in a pinch, but they’re no substitute for the real thing. I think that some folks simply take pictures and don’t care how they look or whether they get the shot - it’s simply to say - “hey, we were there”. That’s not to say that you can’t take some phenomenal photos with them, because you can - if you follow the same kind of rules any photographer would use to take great shots - including knowing when to break the rules.

But because they’re everywhere and easy to carry, iPhones and other smartphones are the go-to for most folks these days. I’ve posted quite a few of the smartphone shots for breaking news type events (like when they were preparing to raise the WTC spire - and I didn’t have my other gear with me).

I just don’t get the iPad as a camera platform. Ungainly and bulky, but I guess since so many people are taking them around with them, they feel that it’s better than nothing (though it starts looking like Lloyd Dobler in Say Anything as everyone holds the damned things over their heads taking pictures of godknowswhat like he did with the boom box - the strains of In Your Eyes ringing in the background).

I’ve got a close friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy, and now dealing with chemo and radiation. It’s been a brutal stretch for her and her family. The recovery is excruciatingly long, and they’re going to have additional surgeries since the reconstruction didn’t go nearly as well as hoped for. It’s left her an emotional wreck. But the alternative was even worse. It’s the fight to live.

So I see Ms. Jolie’s gone public with her decision to have a double mastectomy knowing that she’s got the genes that make her predisposed to getting breast and ovarian cancer - the cancer that killed her mom. It is an extraordinary decision for anyone to make. Her fame and fortune have come in part of her beauty and curves, so to decide to undergo such a radical procedure could not have been easy.

My respect for her to go public with the decision has gone up immeasurably. Many women might not have made the choice she did. Many more might not even know they have that option to make - or be able to afford to learn of it (let alone afford the procedures and reconstruction that come after).

I’m glad that she’s lending her voice to this issue - and it may help reduce the stigma associated with the mastectomies and reconstructions.

True enough.

For me, though, I’ve intentionally stayed with a non-smart cell phone. I want a computer for computing things and I have my cameras (m4/3 for digital, Rolliecord & large format cameras) for taking pictures. I like keeping things separate and more powerful as a result.

I’d rather lust over the newly announced Olympus E-P5 than any i* gadget. Hey, I’m even an Apple fanboy but I’d rather it be a real computer with a decent cpu, ram, big local disk & a unixen underneath the flash. I stopped wanting a pad from any company the day Amazon deleted books from people’s kindles without asking.

Most of us who had the turntables back in the day couldn’t reverse a platter, I guess they could only do that with fancy shmancy equipment that they had at the recording studios (who made up this “backwards” shit)

Okay, since we’ve got the photo folks on board - I’m looking to get a new tripod. The old one was a Manfrotto 718b. 3.1lbs, very lightweight but stable. Problem is that the leg locks have been prone to cracking, and I want to get something a bit more durable (thought the Manfrotto has done 10 years of service).

I figure to do lots of travel photos/hiking, so lightweight and relatively compact size are key. And price is sub $275. So no Gitzos.

I’m leaning towards the Giottos MT9250 MT II Classic Aluminum Tripod, which is comparable in size and weight, but seems more sturdy and durable.

The MeFOTO - RoadTrip Travel Tripod Kit is a bit heavier, but is slightly more compact. The third option is the Oben - CT-2400 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs with BA-0 Ball Head.

Giottos has a couple of similar models that are in the same weight class, so while I’d love to have a tripod that extends higher than 65 inches, that incurs a weight and cost penalty.

All the options have good flexibility in leg positions, hooks for suspending weight from center post, and MeFoto even allows using one leg as a monopod.

98 William Barnett-Lewis  Tue, May 14, 2013 6:58:27am

I’ve heard good things about Giottos but I’ve never found one in my (cheap, used) price range. My best tripod is a simple old aluminium beast branded “Continental” and “Made in Japan”. But it works, it’s lighter than it looks and the price was right.

Have you looked at KEH.com? They might have something used that would be higher end but still within your budget? I find their idea of “bargain” grade to often be equal to anyone else’s “Very Good” to even “Excellent” grade.

It is my personal belief that modern smartphones have contributed substantially to the dumbing down and, for lack of any better word, ‘rudeification’ of our society. I refuse to be part of that system except as the bare minimum needed for emergency communication. For the same reasons, I don’t have a facebook or twitland account; if someone wants to talk to me, they talk to my face.

I finished watching “Django” last night. “Blazing Saddles As Directed by Tarantino” kind of sucked, I liked the scene with Jonah Hill but the setup to the inevitable bloodbath was just lame.

In the original “Blazing Saddles” nobody was shot, nobody was even punched in the face, and there was a kickass pie fight!

“Django Unchained” has far more in common with “The Legend of N****r Charley” and “Boss N****r” than “Blazing Saddles”.

I went into it with the view that it was Tarantino’s take on blaxploitation films of the 1970s. On that level, I enjoyed it, but I still prefer the original blaxploitation films to their more modern counterparts.

But then again, my taste in movies is eclectic. If Rob Zombie ever really does make a feature-length “Werewolf Women of the SS” (with Nicholas Cage as Fu Manchu), hell yeah - I’ll be there on opening day.

Dems vow: ‘Hell to pay’ if IRS allegations ring true

Outraged Bay State Democrats are blasting President Obama for exhibiting a Nixonian abuse of power after the stunning news that the Department of Justice secretly obtained Associated Press phone records and the IRS targeted conservative groups — new scandals emerging against the backdrop of heightened Benghazi criticism.

“There’s no way in the world I’m going to defend that. Hell, I spent my youth vilifying the Nixon administration for doing the same thing. If they did that, there should be hell to pay,” U.S. Rep. Michael E. Capuano (D-Somerville) said about the IRS scandal. “Not only is it bad government and bad to society, it is horrendous politics. The worst thing you can do is give your opponent an easy hammer with which to hit you.”

“It doesn’t seem to be a couple rogue employees. This appeared to be a systemic issue,” said U.S. Rep. Stephen F. Lynch (D-South Boston), who wants to investigate the matter as a member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. The committee already has scheduled a hearing on the issue for this week, Lynch said, adding, “No American should find themselves the target of the IRS or any other federal organization because of their political beliefs.”

Heh. There was a moment between Jackson and DiCaprio that for me, at least, really stood out - the scene in the library, where Jackson was explaining things; it occurred to me when I watched that there was far more than a strictly master and slave relationship - Candie was listening quite intently to what Stephen had to say, and it was more in the manner of a son listening to his father’s advice. It’s a subtle moment in an otherwise unsubtle film, and I give credit to all involved for pulling it off so well.

re: #119 NJDhockeyfan

It’s a systemic problem because the IRS is in charge of figuring out whether a given entity is entitled to 501(c)(4) status, but they took a shortcut and set aside a group of TP entities for further scrutiny.

All entities seeking that status should be getting scrutiny, not just TP ones. It’s not the first time the IRS has had issues - they gave scrutiny to liberal churches in past years (during the Bush Administration).

The way out is to eliminate the designation for any entity that isn’t a homeowners association, volunteer or emergency response department, or similar social welfare entity. The groups shouldn’t be allowed to have the status.

It wasn’t just the Cincinnati office. There were 3 more.

Report: 4 IRS offices targeted conservatives

WASHINGTON, May 14 (UPI) — Internal Revenue Service Tea Party targeting went beyond an Ohio office, and the current and ex-IRS heads knew about the practice a year ago, records indicate.

IRS officials at the agency’s Washington headquarters and at offices in El Monte, Calif., east of Los Angeles and Laguna Niguel in California’s southern Orange County sent queries to conservative groups asking about their donors and other facets of their operations, documents obtained by The Washington Post indicate.

The IRS originally said the alleged anti-conservative usurpation was limited to its Cincinnati branch. The Cincinnati IRS employees told conservatives seeking the non-profit status of “social welfare” groups a Washington task force was overseeing their applications, activists from those groups told the Post.

Lois Lerner, head of the IRS tax-exempt-organizations division, told reporters Friday the “absolutely inappropriate” actions were done by “front-line people” working in Cincinnati to target groups with “Tea Party,” “patriot” or “9/12” in their names.

Her office had no immediate comment to the Post report.

The IRS scandal is a real one - the agency is tasked with enforcing the tax code, and it simply doesn’t have the capabilities to do a thorough job, even as it’s about to get entrusted with enforcing the PPACA requirements. Reduced staffing is going to hurt, and determining whether an entity is deserving of getting or maintaining a 501(c) designation is a fact-intensive investigation.

It’s time consuming and with the number of entities seeking 501(c)(4) designation, that makes the job tougher.

They took a shortcut, and the IRS officials knew that this “policy” was going on, but did nothing to stop it, and may have misled Congressional officials who inquired about why there were entities who were held up in the process.

The acting head of the IRS knew about this last summer, but didn’t make it public - it was the TIGTA (inspector general) who did.

Miller could have alerted Congress to what the IRS had been doing last summer. The Associated Press writes that “Monday, the IRS said Miller was first informed on May, 3, 2012, that applications for tax-exempt status by tea party groups were inappropriately singled out for extra scrutiny.”

On July 25 of last year, Miller testified before the oversight subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee. According to a transcript of that hearing, GOP Rep. Kenny Marchant of Texas said, “I have been contacted by several of the groups in my district. And they feel like they are being harassed. I don’t have any evidence that that is the case. But they feel like they have been harassed and feel like the IRS is threatening them with some kind of action or audit.”

Marchant asked about the questions the IRS was asking such groups to answer in order to prove their right to be exempt from taxes.

Miller did not mention that some conservative groups were getting extra scrutiny from IRS career staff at one of the agency’s offices in Cincinnati, where such work had been centralized. He said, in part, that many of the groups applying for tax-exempt status “are very small organizations and they are not quite sure what the rules are, and so we are working with them to ensure that they understand what the rules are. It is my hope that some of the noise that we heard earlier this year has abated as we continue to work through these cases.”

At another point during the hearing, Miller said of the groups applying for tax-exempt status that “some come in and they are doing things that either are close to the line, impermissible, unclear as to which of those two that they might be and those may take a longer time still, and they will be referred to specialists in Cincinnati and elsewhere that will take a look to justify it and see whether or not the organization qualifies as a public charity.”

On Monday, Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida called on Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and President Obama to “demand the IRS commissioner’s resignation, effective immediately.”

So, Marchant had no evidence - only a gut feeling that there was something untoward going on and Miller further indicated that some of the groups that sought designation needed further guidance on whether they could properly apply.

It’s the year delay between knowing something was going on that might have been improper and doing something about it only after the TIGTA report that needs to be addressed. Firing Miller might fill the bill for scalps politically, but that wont fix the problem with the tax code itself that allows this situation to exist in the first place.

Oh, and note that Miller is acting IRS director. The Administration hasn’t been able to get a permanent director confirmed because the GOP is gumming up the works.

132 darthstar  Tue, May 14, 2013 8:26:22am

Hey…an example of successful rebranding within the GOP.

When Republicans appointed Pablo Pantoja to State Director of Florida Hispanic Outreach for the Republican National Committee, they hoped he would be able to bridge the sizable gap that only expanded during the 2012 elections, when the state’s 4.7 million Hispanic voters supported Barack Obama over Mitt Romney by a 20 percent margin.

But after months of inaction by Congressional Republicans on comprehensive immigration reform and stiff resistance by Republican-leaning groups like the Heritage Foundation, Pantoja has had enough; on Monday, he announced via email that he was leaving the party and registering as a Democrat:

OK, just got back from the vet. He thinks the doggie has something called a histiocytoma, a benign tumor that usually goes away on its own. But, if it begins to ulcer or attaches itself below the skin then it’s 600 bucks for surgery to remove the two we’ve found. Apparently this is an immune system reaction to something.

So what could I feed her to boost her immune system that’s safe and not some homeopathic scam?

BBL.

Quick, suck out the poison!!!

Miami politics are not boring…

North Miami mayoral candidate touts endorsement from Jesus Christ

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. - A mayoral candidate in North Miami claims she has received an endorsement from a higher power.

Campaign posters for Anna L. Pierre tout that she was endorsed by Jesus Christ.

“It’s a spiritual endorsement. Why? Because everything I do I always get God involved,” Pierre said.

Pierre, a registered nurse and 90s Creole-language pop star, said she prayed leading up to registering for her candidacy and received three signs that Jesus was her endorser.

“And what were those three things?,” asked Local 10’s Janine Stanwood.

“Well, I’m going to keep them private,” Pierre said.

…Last week, candidate Jean Marcellus was punched in the face inside his own campaign headquarters by an acquaintance. Candidate and former mayor Kevin Burns said he’s filed five police reports for stolen signs. Pierre said last month she was the target of voodoo spells.

I think it’s pretty clear what happened: some employees of the IRS used keywords in names of groups to highlight for further scrutiny. The potential for exploitation is very high so there should be measures to guard against this.

If they’d done this with different keywords, I would be in a blind screaming fury. If they are allowed to do this, they will do it with different keywords in another administration, with different management, on a different day. So I am in a preemptive blind screaming fury. Well, not blind and screaming. But we need to be clear about how this is gonna work.

Apparently Cheney wasn’t aware of any of the 64 attacks on diplomatic facilities during his term in office.

Or 9/11. That omission on his part shows just how nakedly partisan this craziness is about the Administration’s response to the Benghazi attack. The need to manufacture a scandal of any kind is trumping reality.

Tho, the IRS mess is a real problem - and needs to be properly investigated and remedied with a fix of the tax code.

A flock of eagles descended on the Safeway parking lot last week, prompting police intervention.

Public Safety Director Jamie Sunderland says several people called in short succession on Thursday afternoon to report the melee.

Sunderland: “One of our officers went over there and there were 40 eagles sitting on, in and around several vehicles in the area.”

Sunderland says the eagles were feasting on garbage bags of fish product in the bed of a pickup truck.

Builders bulldoze big Mayan pyramid in Belize

BELIZE CITY (AP) — A construction company has essentially destroyed one of Belize’s largest Mayan pyramids with backhoes and bulldozers to extract crushed rock for a road-building project, authorities announced on Monday.

The head of the Belize Institute of Archaeology, Jaime Awe, said the destruction at the Nohmul complex in northern Belize was detected late last week. The ceremonial center dates back at least 2,300 years and is the most important site in northern Belize, near the border with Mexico.

“It’s a feeling of Incredible disbelief because of the ignorance and the insensitivity … they were using this for road fill,” Awe said. “It’s like being punched in the stomach, it’s just so horrendous.”

Nohmul sat in the middle of a privately owned sugar cane field, and lacked the even stone sides frequently seen in reconstructed or better-preserved pyramids. But Awe said the builders could not possibly have mistaken the pyramid mound, which is about 100 feet tall, for a natural hill because the ruins were well-known and the landscape there is naturally flat.

“These guys knew that this was an ancient structure. It’s just bloody laziness”, Awe said.

US-based Human Rights Watch identified the rebel as Abu Sakkar, a well-known insurgent from the city of Homs, and said his actions were a war crime.

The main Syrian opposition coalition said he would be put on trial.

The video, which cannot be independently authenticated, seems to show him cutting out the heart.

“I swear to God we will eat your hearts and your livers, you soldiers of Bashar the dog,” the man says referring to President Bashar al-Assad as he stands over the soldier’s corpse.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) says Abu Sakkar is the leader of a group called the Independent Omar al-Farouq Brigade.

Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey instead of the eagle.

Franklin’s Letter to His Daughter (excerpt)

“For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

“With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country…

“I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America… He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on.”

I think it’s wrong, and it’s lazy. I’d be blind and screaming if it was proactively used to harass under order from a politician… of which there is absolutely no evidence of.

This is clearly a problem that needs to be resolved, then we can work on other problems like obviously partisan political groups seeking tax exempt status. As if taxing them is an attack on liberty and freedom. Either tax them all or tax none of them.

Lazy maybe. But if the key word searches aren’t being done by executive fiat, I don’t see where this is wrong.

Going back to that earlier camera discussion, I should make it clear that I have my smartphone for the on-the-spot photos, and you can take good pictures with it in certain lighting conditions, etc. It’s just always going to be a very limited camera, and it absolutely is not a license to be a douchecanoe pressing it up against the glass repeatedly and getting in the way of a large crowd. The pictures aren’t going to turn out well. Just stop.

I’m not even going to get started with the iPad as camera thing, except I have used mine that way *once* and that was only because taking the photo with the iPad meant I could send it to family before we got back from vacation, versus photos with the camera, which had to wait until after the trip. Cell phone wasn’t an option because reasons, and it did take a better photo than my smartphone, which …is a pretty lousy smartphone for photos.

Personally, I don’t understand why there is a big dustup over the IRS taking a closer look at the Tea Party organizations.
Consider the fact that the IRS hasn’t had increased scrutiny of other conservatively-aligned organizations, including several religious groups who have blatantly and unapologetically crossed the tax-exempt line regarding political endorsements, campaigning, and inserting themselves into government-related activities.

The Tea Party-aligned groups, on the other hand, have a specific history with the IRS (among other Federal government agencies).
It is well documented fact that there is a significant crossover between Tea Partiers and the Sovereign Citizens movements who have on more than one occasion been involved in violent confrontations with Federal, state, and local authorities.
Simply put, when you have a large number of members within your organizations who outright state that the 16th Amendment was never ratified, as well as denying the validity of the Federal Reserve, and claiming that most federal laws don’t apply to them, then yes, you DESERVE to be profiled by the feds.

Today is not starting out well.

I found Zedushka passed out in the garage. I called EMS and told them he was a diabetic slipping into a hypoglycemic coma. They came out to the house and put some sugar in him and he came to. Then I made him eat a big breakfast.

I’m at work now but our grandson is coming in from Cincinnati this afternoon so I have to go and pick him up at the bus station since I don’t think Zedushka should be driving a car.

re: #90 William Barnett-Lewis

I thought the camera on the phone was the stupidest thing ever, until my last auto accident …

re: #223 RadicalModerate

The problem is that the IRS is supposed to be doing this in a nonpartisan fashion. They can’t simply target a specific group based on political affiliation. The allegation is that the IRS was specifically targeting TP and conservative groups that sought 501(c)(4) designations, and in some instances delaying their acceptances. They were required to submit lengthy questionaires as well.

Mind you, all entities seeking nonprofit designations should be getting scrutiny to make sure that abuses don’t occur - particularly on acting in a political fashion that would otherwise violate the law. But the IRS doesn’t have the resources to do that, so someone came up with this shortcut. And then delayed informing Congress about it - and possibly more (expect to see IRS Director Miller hauled before Congress once again to testify about what he knew, when did he know, and what steps have been taken to prevent in future).

John Stewart naled it when he pointed out that the IRS has now handed the conspiracy theorists enough outrage to keep them frothing until 2016.

In addition, we have enough people who think that the IRS is a criminal organization outright for taking our hard-earned money away from us, they have just made it a lot more difficult for them to do their job.

Actually, in fairness to Dim Jim, this bit of derp was actually written by Mara Zebest, herself a Duchess of Derp, as she is a self proclaimed expert on why President Obama’s long form birth certificate is a forgery.

In fact, it was Mara Zebest who authored the report of Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s “Cold Case Posse,” which declared the birth certificate to be a forgery, and said report was merely recycled articles from World Net Daily.

I have to ask. In the last few years —were there a disproportionate number of right-wing 501(c)3’s started to left-wing?

would numbers alone account for the disproportionate number of “investigations” thus skewing the concept of “targeting”?

There were indeed more right wing leaning entities seeking 501(c)(4) status than left wing, but the IRS needed to find a politically-neutral way of sussing out those who were legit and which ones that weren’t. The name game alone wasn’t sufficient, unless there were corresponding left wing sounding group names included. That didn’t happen.

It all depends on what you mean by “boosting the immune system”, I would hazard a guess (based on your description), that your dog’s immune system is strong enough.

The best way to keep your dog healthy is with exercise and healthy eating.

We discovered that our Shepherd/Lab has an intolerance to beef products, when we cut it out he was much healthier and went from a lean 25 kg to a much beefier 32. He is also more energetic, playful and glossier.
