Republicans Oddly Silent Over DOJ Raid on AP Records

They’ve never been that big on freedom of the press anyway
Politics • Views: 26,237

Amid all the scandals and freak-outs this week, Republicans are curiously silent about the Justice Department’s raid on Associated Press records.

Republican senators who have long been critics of Attorney General Eric Holder were noticeably muted on Tuesday when asked to respond to the news of the Justice Department seizing reporters’ records as part of a broader probe into national security leaks.

“Well, I think we need to see how this plays out,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), one of Holder’s biggest critics and who last year demanded that the attorney general resign amid the Fast and Furious gun-running probe. “I have questions about it, but I’m wiling to wait and see how this plays out, whether it was narrowly targeted or whether it was a net that was too broadly cast,” Cornyn said.

“I want to see the details — what was their rationale, why did they do it — before offering an opinion,” said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who earlier this week accused the administration of engaging in a “cover-up” in Benghazi. “For me, to rush to a judgment without knowing all the facts is just not appropriate.”

Republicans who are reluctant to rush to judgment? Has the Apocalypse arrived?

The political calculation’s pretty obvious here; the Republican Party and the right wing media have spent the last couple of decades demonizing the mainstream media, with special vitriol being directed at the AP. It’s not going to work for GOP politicians to suddenly flip and start defending the Associated Press now, after all that — the right wing Tea Party base would break out the tar and feathers and RINO signs.

If anyone can figure out how to the triple lindy pivot to attack the Administration for doing precisely what the GOP sought action to do, it’s this GOP.

Senate Republicans’ reluctance to defend freedom of the press may stem their demands last year that Holder crack down on those behind national security leaks. Cornyn and McCain were among those leading the calls.

The GOP wanted a crackdown on leaks - tracking down who was leaking and improving national security in the process. The subpoenas and info sought from AP was meant to further that goal.

So, that’s why the GOP is now holding off from attacking - but it may also be because they’re going full metal anti-IRS right now, and why take attention away from that matter (which also helps unify TP and GOP elements that might have gone out of sync).

They’re trying to figure out how this affects Benghazi.

5 GeneJockey  Wed, May 15, 2013 10:28:01am

I confess to some surprise that they’re holding back. Hypocrisy never seems to bother them, and the potential to rope Holder into this would seem to be too good an opportunity to pass up. After all, McCain skipped a Benghazi briefing to hold a press conference bitching that he wasn’t getting enough information on Benghazi (as was pointed out on the last thread), so I don’t understand his reluctance here.

re: #3 lawhawk

Holder made a pretty good case yesterday that the AP’s story on Yemeni terrorists had caused grave danger to American citizens, and I don’t see any reason to doubt that. And realistically, the government has to be able to protect national intelligence secrets. On the other hand, it really seems like this operation was heavy-handed and overly broad in scope.

The right wing’s long-term strategy for dealing with the mainstream press, though, is to demonize and attack them — because much of the time, reality doesn’t support the right wing’s positions, and the GOP wants to keep the voting base as uninformed as possible.

The media shouldn’t be put on a pedestal, either — they have plenty of their own failings. It’s important that we have a press that’s somewhat of an antagonist toward the government, but the relationship between the right wing and the press is more like nasty hand-to-hand fighting.

Of course, but Priebus seems to be out of touch with republicans in this. Now calls from the President for Senator Schumer to re-introduce the Shied Act
which would have prohibited some of the Justice departments overreach, makes Obama look much more concerned than republicans.

After that explosion in West, TX, why would anyone want TX-style government applied to the rest of the country?

What’s scary is that even after pointing out to West residents that tighter regulations would have prevented all of those deaths, they still are like “No, sir, no ebil gubmint fer me.”

As in, “The needless slaugheter of my neighbors are acceptable losses because freedom.” NJ has its problems, but thankfully, that mindset isn’t one of them.

North Miami mayoral candidate says someone is using Vodou on her

Anna Pierre, one of eight candidates running for mayor, said unknown persons left chicken feathers, food scraps and candles at her office doorstep over the past three months. She believes the items are tied to mystical rituals in the Haitian Vodou religion.

“I found little dolls with needles in it. They put a lot of pennies at front of my office door,” she said. “I’m from Haiti I know what it is.”

Pierre, a nurse and singer, said her popularity in the Haitian community is a threat to whoever is trying to curse her. Pierre is well-known for her 1990s Creole-language hit ” Suk Su Bon Bon.” In the song, she demands that her husband put sugar on her “cookie” or else she will leave him.

She said the threats are not just of the spiritual nature.

Pierre said an anonymous person has been using a blocked number to call her phone. The voice on the other line told her to drop out of the race.

“I have people in Haiti, Canada, and the U.S. praying for me,” she said. “I have Jesus with me.

I think that John Cornyn is being quiet on this one because he’s been too busy lately trying to out-crazy Ted Cruz.

His latest stunt? Attempting to block the nomination of Thomas Perez for Labor Secretary.
The reason? Perez, as assistant attorney for the US Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division represented the US in the challenge of legality of state Voter ID laws, which have been struck down as unconstitutional each and every time they have been ruled on by a federal court.

Cornyn: Nominee Tom Perez doesn’t have the ‘temperament or the competence’ to be Labor Secretary

Texas Sen. John Cornyn joined several Republicans voicing their opposition to President Obama’s nomination of Thomas Perez as the new Labor Secretary.

In a speech on the Senate floor, Cornyn criticized Perez’s leadership at the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice, saying he has a record of political discrimination.

“So instead of upholding and enforcing all laws equally, the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division Voting Section under Mr. Perez has launched politically-motivated campaigns against commonsense constitutional laws like the Voter ID laws adopted by the state of Texas and South Carolina,” Cornyn said.
[…]
Perez’s supporters view the nominee as an unyielding civil rights advocate for decades. He has prosecuted a record number of hate crimes cases, aggressively searched for potential abusive law enforcement practices in police departments across the nation, and addressed housing disparities.

Many of the issues Perez has advocated for have impacted Texas directly and many Texans admire him for that, said Laura Murphy, director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office.

“I think Tom Perez has done a lot for the Latino and the African American community,” Murphy said citing Perez’s efforts to change the state’s voter ID laws and investigating police use of force.

“[Cornyn] is painting himself as hostile to minorities and I don’t think that’s a smart posture anymore,” she said.

Yeah, I’ve been keeping tabs on this too. There’s been a lot of really shady stuff found out about the two owners.
For example, there’s the little tidbit that Amy Bouzaglo was sentenced to 14 months in state prison in 2008 for securing a line of credit with a stolen Social Security card.

By Paul Pringle and Richard Winton

Two witnesses who saw Kern County sheriff’s deputies beat David Silva before he died accused authorities of erasing one of the cellphone videos that captured the incident.

Kern County Sheriff Danny Youngblood said Tuesday he has asked the FBI to conduct its own investigation after learning that one of two phones seized from witnesses had no footage on it.

The two witnesses told The Times that they watched the videos on each of the phones last week in the wake of Silva’s death.

Melissa Quair, 31, said she saw the videos on both phones shortly after the beating, which she witnessed. “They must have gotten rid of one of the videos,” she said.

Also, it was discovered that almost every photo from their webpage was taken from other websites, without permission, and in many cases used copyrighted images (with said copyright notices removed).

I’m totally sure that restaurant isn’t a money laundering operation or anything like that.

re: #84 Lidane

Look, it’s part of the job of the IRS (or any state tax department) to audit those who submit records/returns/information to the department that raises red flags. Certain kinds of filings get close scrutiny because there’s plenty of room for abuse. But because tax departments don’t have unlimited resources, they have to pick and choose areas that get more scrutiny.

501c scrutiny needs to be done because it leads to tax exempt status that can save entities plenty of coin - to say nothing of the tax benefit to those who donate to those entities.

It needs to be done in an impartial fashion and without political bias. That’s what’s alleged here and the TIGTA isn’t holding back in finding that the IRS did something wrong here. How the agency goes from here depends also on Congress doing something to fix and clarify how the 501c provisions operate re: political activities so that the IRS has clear guidance on what constitutes political activity - “some activity” isn’t exactly a bright line definition, nor is how to figure out what that means based on actions or activities.

But it is hilarious to see twitter light up with allegations that x or y was audited and therefore proof that the IRS did something wrong.

No, the IRS is auditing because something that you included on your return caught any number of potential red flags - if you take certain kinds of credits or deductions, you’re going to increase your chances of an audit.

You claim a home office? That’ll increase your chances for an audit. Same for certain charitable deductions - like donating cars to charity, which caused huge problems in the past in determining proper value. Take higher than average deductions for someone in your economic position? That’s a red flag too.

But the percentage of people who have been audited by the IRS is small compared to the total number of returns. It’s roughly 1.1% of all taxpayers - but those who have incomes over $10 million are more likely to be audited (in part because they have more potential tax avoidance tactics to attempt). But those at the low end of the income chart get audited on problems with the EITC.

I would dearly, dearly, dearly love for them to redo the tax code. Doing taxes is such a headache. I try to be aware that one reason it is that way is because we have enough income to make things complicated, but that charity generally only lasts through the first paragraph of whatever form I am reading and then I want another drink.

Bomb Squad Investigating Suspicious Devices At Culver City Apartment Complex

CULVER CITY (CBSLA.com) — A bomb squad Wednesday was investigating suspicious devices at an apartment complex in Culver City.

LAPD officers conducting a traffic stop in West Los Angeles around 10 p.m. Tuesday discovered that a driver had a gun, drugs, and a suspicious item — believed to be a pipe bomb — in his vehicle, according to KNX1070′s Margaret Carrero.

Once bomb squad detectives confirmed the suspicious item was in fact an explosive, police went to the driver’s apartment in the 38000 block of Overland Avenue, where they found additional devices.

…”This appears to be just a lone-wolf type of individual. There’s no connection to terrorism. This is an individual who apparently seemed to be intrigued with explosive devices,” Preciado said.

Looks like this might very well be an urban legend.

Did the internet get stung by a story about a man having sex with a hornet nest?

The original source for the story has now been traced to a satirical website in Sweden, which reported the stinging tale back in September, 2012.

It was originally reported animal rights campaigners were concerned about the wellbeing of the hornets, but we are now fairly sure no hornets (or men called Hasse) were harmed in the making of this story.

Satan Is Trying to Get the Government to Approve Sin Through Gay Marriage

On today’s “Faith and Freedom” broadcast, Matt Barber explained that the push for gay marriage is really an effort by Satan to get the United States to officially embrace sin.

Since man-woman marriage is a metaphor for Christ and the Church, Barber explained, “Satan hates the institution of natural marriage and wants to see it watered down.”

So apparently Satan operates using popular opinion and the democratic process rather than issue decrees from on high and expecting blind obedience for all eternity.

5 Things You Need to Know in the Inspector General’s
IRS Tea Party Scandal Report

“…The report makes clear that the guidelines for 501(c)(4) groups and political activity are ridiculously vague. They’re so vague that the IRS doesn’t understand them. But to their credit, investigators didn’t stop there. They recommended that the IRS develop better guidelines for processing requests involving groups that might focus too heavily on politics. And they suggested the IRS train its staffers before each election cycle on what actually constitutes political activity versus plain vanilla, nonpolitical advocacy.

In a footnote, the IG also says it might launch another audit looking at how the IRS monitors nonprofit groups and makes sure they don’t get too involved in politics.

That, of course, doesn’t fully resolve the issue of the foggy rules on where the line is drawn for making politics a group’s “primary purpose.” That’s a job for Congress.”

As in, “The needless slaugheter of my neighbors are acceptable losses because freedom.” NJ has its problems, but thankfully, that mindset isn’t one of them.

It’s this sort of thing that makes me think America, for many people, is a religion rather than a nation.

And it’s a religion that requires blood sacrifice to remain holy.

So yes, I’ve had that situation. In the instance that I have in mind, we ultimately decided not to move forward.”
