Pickering and Mullen Don’t Trust Darrell Issa - and They Shouldn’t

Issa doesn’t want the public to hear what they have to say
Politics • Views: 25,365

Former Ambassador Thomas Pickering and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen, who oversaw the Accountability Review Board that reviewed the government’s response to the Benghazi attack, are clearly unhappy with Republican hitman Darrell Issa and his distorted characterizations of their work: Pickering, Mullen Challenge Issa to Let Them Testify in Public.

The dispute between Issa and the co-chairmen came to a head after neither Pickering nor Mullen attended a May 8 House Oversight Committee hearing on the attacks, sparking a heated back and forth about who was invited and when. The rhetoric intensified Sunday during a highly contentious joint appearance with Issa and Pickering on NBC’s “Meet the Press” in which Issa maintained the two “refused to come before our committee.” Pickering insisted that he was not invited despite expressing a willingness to testify.

“Chairman Issa sent word back that he might want to take me up some time in the future” Pickering said.

Issa also suggested on the program that Pickering and Mullen meet with the committee behind closed doors so as not to create “some sort of stage show.” But the two assert in their letter that a public hearing is a “more appropriate forum” and accuse Issa of changing his “position on the terms of our appearance.”

By demanding that the hearing be open to the public, it’s clear that Pickering and Mullen simply don’t trust the blatantly partisan Issa to tell the truth — and they shouldn’t.

But Issa and the GOP are honestly seeking the honest, caring troof and are not being shamefully political or partisan in any way about Benghazi.

Democrats’ Best Friends In The IRS Scandal

After a pretty crappy few days, Democrats awoke to the nice surprise that Mitch McConnell would join Michele Bachmann at a press conference today, along with some tea partiers who were targeted (we are to believe inappropriately) by the IRS.

Why? Because Bachmann was likely to say something fringe and wacky like, say, that everyone keeps asking her why President Obama hasn’t been impeached already. Which is exactly what she did.

You could hear the crunch of McConnell’s intestines turning to ice from across the capital.

Rep. Gohmert Furious That Holder ‘Challenged My Character’

“Because of political correctness, there was not a thorough enough investigation of Tamerlan to determine this kid had been radicalized,” Gohmert said of one of the Boston bombing suspects. “On the one hand, we go after Christian groups like Billy Graham’s group - we go after Franklin Graham’s group - but then we’re hands-off when it comes to possibly offending someone who has been radicalized as a terrorist.”

Holder responded by saying that Gohmert didn’t have access to all of the facts.

“Unless somebody has done something inappropriate, you don’t have access to the FBI files,” he said. “I know what the FBI did. You cannot know what I know.”

Gohmert bristled at the suggestion that he was making false statements, repeatedly telling Holder that he “challenged my character.”

Go eat a bag of dicks Louie. Don’t you need to go defend a golf course from the UN or something?

Bible-quoting Beck reenacts ‘Untouchables’ by beating activist with baseball bat

Conservative performance artist Glenn Beck on Wednesday compared President Barack Obama to Chicago gangster Al Capone by reenacting a scene from the movie “The Untouchables” and using a baseball bat to beat a tea party activist in the head until he was laying dead in a pool of fake blood.

In a video posted to The Blaze website, Beck is dressed in a tuxedo, explaining that the media should wake up because news that the IRS was targeting tea party groups and that the Department of Justice had seized phone records from reporters proved that his conspiracy theories were true.

“Vengeance is theirs, saith the new lord,” Beck says, riffing off Romans 12:19 from the Bible. “And they will destroy the lives of their enemies. It’s their M.O.”

“It is the Chicago Way,” he adds, resting a baseball bat on his left shoulder. “You know what my favorite pastime is? Baseball!”

Those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad.

Rubin thinks that Mullen will say something in private that will make the difference and prove Issa right? That’s what she’s going to go with, instead of the much more probable outcome of Issa taking whatever Mullen said in private and spinning it into something completely out of context and outright wrong.

By giving Mullen and Pickering a public venue, they’ll be able to speak past Issa and directly to the public record. Issa will grandstand as he normally does (and bogart time in the hearing to hear his own bloviation), but Mullen will be able to pick him apart and state the case for what happened.

Rubin, of course, thinks that means that Mullen and Pickering have something to hide by speaking in public.

‘Fox & Friends’ hosts think Obama’s scandal damage control is a plot to ‘confuse’ them

The hosts of Fox & Friends complained on Thursday that President Barack Obama had taken actions in response to so-called scandals involving terrorist attacks in Benghazi and the Internal Revenue Service targeting tea party groups in an effort to “confuse the American people” — or at the very least, Fox News morning show hosts.

GOP Congressman: Legalized Abortions Cause School Shootings

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is overturning Roe v. Wade. Or, at least, that’s what freshman Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) seemed to suggest in a speech earlier this month:

Just in the last several days, a Bismarck news anchor mistakenly uttered vulgarity on live television. He’s been heralded by celebrities from New York to California as some sort of pop icon. His bosses have been called goons because they fired him. We learned this week that the Pentagon is vetting its guide on religious tolerance with a group that compared Christian evangelism to rape, and advocated that military personnel and colluding chaplains who proselytize should be court-marshalled.

Forty years ago, the United States Supreme Court sanctioned abortion on demand. And we wonder why our culture sees school shootings so often.

Bradlee Dean Has Epic Meltdown over Minnesota’s Gay Marriage Law

Minnesota-based Religious Right activist/rock star Bradlee Dean went ballistic on his radio show yesterday in response to his state’s new marriage equality law. Dean warned that Gov. Mark Dayton, who signed the same-sex marriage bill into law, is at “war with God” and is “about to find out what it’s like as to what the fallout is when you throw rocks towards God, he’s going to learn how gravity works.” He added that Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who backed his state’s marriage equality law, and other pro-gay rights “criminals” will face divine justice as well:

Dean even seems to believe that every gay person in the country showed up for yesterday’s celebration of the marriage equality law in order to “push their propaganda and their agendas on the American people,” just as Saul Alinsky commanded.

“They come from all over the country to do this so what you’ve seen was probably the whole lump of the population of the homosexual community in the United States of America,” Dean said.

Amy’s Baking Company vs. The Entire Internet

The Amy & Samy story is essentially a master-class in How To Lose An Argument on the Internet. The basic steps, for anyone curious:

* TYPE IN ALL CAPS
* Explain that God is on your side.
* Call the other person a rude four-letter, three-letter, five-letter, six-letter, ten-letter, or twelve-letter name.
* Explain that you are right because the other person is an idiot, while misspelling something.
* USE ERRATIC PUNCTUATION OR GRAMMAR WHILE CALLING THE OTHER PERSON STUPID ALSO DO THIS IN ALL CAPS.
* Describe your cats as “little boys in cat bodies” or “little people in cat suits” or “children, but actually cats, but really children” or “non-human children.”
* Refuse to stop arguing.
* When the backlash starts, insist that you were hacked.

They manage to do all of these, in some cases in a single post. They do everything short of comparing someone to Hitler.

Naturally, this has been blowing up online. To call this kicking the hornet’s nest would be an understatement. They poked and poked and poked the hornet’s nest while making disparaging remarks about the hornets’ mothers. No wonder there’s a swarm.

3 Reasons Real Heroes Tend to be Weirdos

Last week, Cleveland resident Charles Ramsey was propelled to national fame when he saved the lives of three kidnapping victims while enjoying some McDonald’s for lunch. And thanks to his subsequent freewheeling TV interview, the world also learned that Charles Ramsey is a total weirdo.

Yes, Ramsey follows in the footsteps of Antoine “bed intruder” Dodson and a hatchet-wielding drifter named Kai, who rose to Internet stardom this past February after saving a California utility worker from a rampaging motorist claiming to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. But why is it that these strange citizens keep swooping into the fray like so many bat-shaped men? There’s a reason — and yes, it involves science.

The latest employment surveys show Wisconsin’s unemployment rate remained at 7.1% in April but the state lost 24,100 jobs during the month, the state Department of Workforce Development said Thursday.

Both numbers are adjusted to take into account the predictable ebb and flow of employment in different parts of the year. Both numbers also are based on surveys and are subject to revision. But they represent the most up-to-date peak at Wisconsin’s much-watched employment situation.

Another set of employment data released by the department Thursday, meanwhile, shows that Wisconsin added 62,072 private-sector jobs from December 2010 through December 2012.

Falling far short of his 250,000 private sector jobs promise by the end of Scott Walkers first term, we are 44th in job creation. 1,500 jobs a month. Wow, his conservative laser focus on jobs is a prosperity dynamo!!

Lawmakers demand civilian enforcement of military’s rape laws after scandals

A group of U.S. lawmakers from both parties announced Thursday that they are proposing legislation to hand over prosecution of sexual assaults on and by U.S. military personnel to civilian authorities. According to Bloomberg News, the officials are taking the action as evidence mounts suggesting that the military is either incapable of or uninterested in policing its own ranks with regards to sexual assaults on women.

“It’s clear that our system is broken,” said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) in a press conference reported by Bloomberg.

Military commanders have opposed such a move for years, saying that crimes committed within the military should be handled by military police. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has expressed his own resistance to the change in enforcement and Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said on Wednesday that he was not personally ready to allow civilian authorities to take jurisdiction over sexual assaults in the military.

No, You Cannot Substitute ‘Sex’ For ‘Rape’

On Friday afternoon, the Associated Press ran a story about a young woman in Washington state who alleges that her high school’s officials failed to protect her from a 16-year-old boy who raped her on school property, and even allowed the boy to remain in the same classroom with her after her guardian reported she was being harassed by him. The school continues to deny most of her claims, and she is seeking at least $400,000 in damages.

In its headline about the story, the AP chose to characterize the encounter — which took place in a bathroom at the high school — as “restroom sex”:

Barton: Partner Abuse ‘Ten Times Higher’ in Same-Sex Relationships

David Barton isn’t just a terrible and unaccredited historian, he’s also an awful amateur sociologist. While talking to co-host Rick Green on today’s edition of WallBuilders Live about how same-sex marriage will take away from society the benefits of marriage, Barton argued that “spousal abuse is through the roof, up to ten times higher in homosexual couples whether they be gay or lesbian, male or female, spousal abuse is higher.”

He also said that “no sociological study out there” is supportive of same-sex parenting, adding that “we know that kids coming out of those homes are having much more difficulty.”

The American Sociological Association maintained in an amicus brief that “the social science consensus is both conclusive and clear: children fare just as well when they are raised by same-sex parents as when they are raised by opposite-sex parents.” The Washington Post adds that “there is a growing consensus among experts that the sexual orientation of parents is not a major determinant in hos well children fare in school, on cognitive tests and in terms of their emotional development,” noting that one recent survey found that children of lesbian parents “did fine—better even, than children in a similar study involving more diverse families.”

The report arrives in the midst of a national movement in the industry for better wages and the right to unionize.

Beck: White People Lynched by the KKK Would Be Tea Party Activists Today

While discussing the IRS scandal on today’s radio program, Glenn Beck lashed out at the NAACP because he was outraged over a statement made by former NAACP chairman Julian Bond that it was entirely legitimate for the IRS to target Tea Party groups for extra scrutiny.

“They are a joke,” Beck said of the NAACP, calling them “an affront” to everything that Martin Luther King, Frederick Douglass, and Booker T. Washington stood for. “You are an affront to their memory. You really are.”

Somehow, that discussion then prompted Beck to declare that “20% of the lynchings [carried out] by the KKK were of white people … and you know what, I contend [that] the white people that were lynched are exactly the kind of people that would be in the Tea Party today”:

Yes, you win ONE INTERNETS for having a good memory.

In undergrad I took a polisci course on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. This was right after Hamas won the elections, and the Western response really puzzled me, because it had seemed the perfectly logical outcome of a two party system when the majority of the voting public was dissatisfied with the party in power (Fatah).

Anyway, it was taught by this wonderful professor whose name eludes me right now - it’s probably filed away somewhere - who had actually been a minor diplomat attached to the peace process for a time and had met Arafat. Wonderful older Jewish gentleman, and the class was very fair and balanced. I definitely felt like I learned a lot.

My main takeaway was that for all the talk about Jerusalem and old borders, the real sticking point is going to be water rights. And at the current rate, it may not make much difference - the aquifers under the Gaza strip were already suffering severe saltwater infiltration in 2006 and I can’t imagine it’s gotten any better.

OK, this is way OT, but I wanted a couple of opinions as I figure something out for myself.

I am 53, never been to college and I seriously do not want to go back to work in retail for minimum wage and try to work my way into management. At my age I’d be lucky to get hired in the first place, but I really don’t want to do that anymore unless I have no other choices. College would be great, but by the time I get a degree I’m going to be REALLY old for the job market. I’ve been a full time mom for 20 years, so all my references are scattered to the 4 winds, I don’t even know where any of those people are anymore so I would be starting over from scratch, almost like it’s my first job. Talk about depressing, yipes.

Sooo, I am thinking of starting my own organic gardening consulting business. It’s something I know and love to do. I’m just not sure exactly what services to offer and what to charge or if it’s even something that anyone would pay for. I’ve checked a few sites for people who do this, there don’t seem to be any around me, so I’d have the market kind of to myself if I can figure out how to create a demand for the service. Thoughts anyone?

Simple. See if your county offers classes (usually free) on small business development -often they are offered at the community college -

Same with accounting software —you have to get the paperwork correct or you will not make money —and if you don’t know how to do it, you will not do it correctly and will avoid doing it.

Just so you know …

More:

The research is speculative and definitive conclusions cannot be drawn, said research leader Dr David Margel, of the Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto University.

But excess exposure to oestrogen is known to cause cancer and the study suggests that widespread use of the Pill has resulted in by-products called endocrine disruptors being deposited in the environment.

These do not break down easily in the body so can be passed into urine and end up in the water supply or the food chain, thus exposing the general population.

Dr Kate Holmes, of The Prostate Cancer Charity, said: ‘This study does not present a strong evidence case for an association between the use of the contraceptive pill and prostate cancer, nor does it intend to.

‘It is intended to explore the possibility that release of endocrine disruptive chemicals (EDCs) into the environment, a process which is not unique to the Pill, might impact on the incidence of the disease.

I think the thought of doing what you love for a ‘job’ is a great one. I don’t necessarily have a ton of practical advice, but I would say check if there’s a local farmer’s market or something where you might be able to set up a booth? Also see about leaving cards or a brochure at some of the local nurseries. Maybe look into the master gardener type stuff, assuming there’s something along those lines locally?

Having a website that looks good and writing blog entries might help put your name out there, especially for the younger crowd. I don’t know about your area in particular, but I know a fair number of folks my age who might be interested in something like that - or if you looked into renting out a community space and offering a class on organic vegetable gardening (for example) and then handed out cards at the end of it for further consultation.

Just some ideas.

It’s worth noting that saying “birth control pills” is different than saying “birth control based on estrogen” which is a portion but certainly not all of birth control pills out there.

Also, correlation != causation. This is entirely a statistical study and offers no actual evidence at all, except that there is a correlation between higher use of contraceptives among women and higher incidence of prostate cancer among men.

Also, look into any gardening/farming cooperatives in your area; if you have a natural foods co-op, they likely will have contact with a number of local farmers. Take pictures — good ones — of your own work. Think brochure-style photos. The work itself can be one heck of an advertisement. AND….check with local school districts. Many schools have gardening programs. A good lesson plan geared to your area might be useful, as well.

Best of luck. Working in the soil may not be lucrative, but it’s immensely satisfying.

If you wanted to shoot me an e-mail at some point particularly regarding website stuff, I’ve turned on e-mail for this comment (assuming I’ve done it right) so we could talk about stuff there. I’m not current on a lot of the current stuff, but I have dabbled in that kind of thing in the past (and could come up to speed) and like to think I can at least identify some useful things.

If you were closer I’d be happy to come play photographer for your garden, but the best I can do is northern VA next week

Can’t say much about your business concept, but, lets talk resume:

You’ve been a Facilities Manager for 20 years. You’ve managed an annual budget of $xx.xx. You’ve been responsible for a supply chain and quality control. Your achievements: never over budget, no deficits (capital expenditures [house, vehicles] don’t count), etc.

Company: Homeland LLC

Yep. I am more than happy to look over and offer comments, advice, etc., and uncomplicated design is within my skillset too - what you really want is something that will allow static pages that you can easily edit (for listing things like what you offer and prices, etc.) and then a blog you could update with gardening-related articles on a semi-regular basis.

Was the firing unjust in your opinion? If so then you’re doing the right thing. Employers need to know that capricious decisions have ripple effects.

To be honest, I don’t even know the full details of what happened. She says it’s because she screwed up on a project that ended up costing one of the account managers a major client. But IMO it was such a small project in comparison to the size of the company that left that I’m inclined to believe that they were looking for a reason to leave and used her mistakes to do it. And now she’s fired. It’ll be a few weeks before she’s gone for good, but now I’m in panic mode.

I don’t know what to think right now. I just don’t want to end up the only person here and be expected to carry the weight of the entire office on my shoulders. If I wanted to do that, I’d start my own business.

re: #208 A Mom Anon

I know this isn’t what you were asking, but… I understand that a lot of restaurants, especially higher end, buy locally grown fresh herbs. Maybe you could sell some of your garden produce?

As far as sharing your gardening knowledge, do you have a Leisure Learning or something similar in your area? It’s real easy to offer classes through them. Also, ebooks are big sellers and don’t cost you anything, beyond time to write one of course, besides a website to promote it.

I jokingly told my 19 year old, who was trying to figure out What He Wants To Be When He Grows Up, that the REAL reason why you’ll never work a day in your life if you do what you love is that you’ll be unemployed. In his case especially, since the only thing he loves besides playing video games is theater, but he’s nowhere near egotistical enough to make a career out of it.

Instead, I suggested he find something he likes enough that he could stand doing it for 40 years. I don’t know that I LOVE Biotechnology, but I LIKE it enough that I’ve been able to stand 32 years of it, and hopefully another decade or two.

The things I love? Watchmaking, cooking, archery, cycling? I do those for me, and doing them for money would eventually make me hate them.

My wife has a lot in common with you (right down to having a son with Aspergers). She’s 54, getting back into the world of paying jobs after 21 years as a full time Mom. She has a teaching credential, which would be great if they weren’t LAYING OFF TEACHERS!!! She’s taken a job as a substitute Teacher’s Aide, which doesn’t pay a hell of a lot, but she’s starting to think she doesn’t really want to be a Teacher - too much work, too much responsibility. When she taught, it was 10 hour days plus an extra day on the weekends, and all for $16k a year.

Regarding starting your own business, what my wife discovered is that unless you’re really into self-promotion and pounding the pavement, it might not be for you. The advantage of any paying position is that it will generally just require you showing up and doing the job.

I suppose I’m being a bit of a wet blanket, but these are my thoughts.

re: #303 GeneJockey

It’s worth showing the bad as well as the good.

Having something you love as a job at least means that part of the work isn’t work though - YMMV, of course, but I think the only reason my dad’s been able to stay sane at his job is because he does love the technical challenges.

In other news, I perked up one of teh kittehs’ day by taking care of some of the forming chest mats.

The short-haired one is excluded from both that photo and the need to deal with chest mats.

You mean for watchmaking? Watchmaking does not mean making watches, so no need to make parts. It means fixing them, which, without thousands of dollars of equipment means tearing them down completely, cleaning them scrupulously, reassembling them carefully, and oiling them sparingly. I replace parts with either NOS parts, or parts scrounged from spare movements.
