ABC’s Jonathan Karl: Yes, the Story Was False but It “Entirely Stands”

WTF?
Media • Views: 22,249

If you’ve been following the story of the Benghazi “talking points” emails, you know that it’s now been confirmed beyond any doubt that Republican sources fed false information to the media, especially to ABC News’s Jonathan Karl. Karl claimed that he had “obtained” these emails, and we now know that this was completely untrue — he was quoting the words of his anonymous source, who lied to him. He did not “obtain” or even see the actual email in question.

The ethical thing to do at this point would be to correct and retract the story, and reveal the name of his dishonest source. But that’s not the path Karl is choosing:

On the Sunday, May 19 edition of CNN’s Reliable Sources, host Howard Kurtz read a statement from Jonathan Karl, chief White House Correspondent for ABC News in response to his reporting on altered emails related to the Sunday talk show talking points following the attacks on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya in September 2012. Karl now expresses regret about his original reporting on May 10th on the Benghazi emails. The statement reads:

“Clearly, I regret the email was quoted incorrectly and I regret that it’s become a distraction from the story, which still entirely stands. I should have been clearer about the attribution. We updated our story immediately.”

-Jonathan Karl, ABC News Chief White House Correspondent

Amazing. ABC News should be ashamed of this kind of egotistical ass-covering. Their credibility is at stake, and they’re letting their anonymous right wing sources get away with lying to them.

Karl, still hiding behind a passive voice.

Interviewing Jonathan Karl on a story regarding media accuracy.

Are you sure this isn’t an Onion story?

Jennifer Rubin demands CNN ‘mute’ David Shuster for ‘Media Matters talking points’

Neoconservative Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin on Sunday demanded that CNN “mute” Take Action News host David Shuster for using what she insisted were “Media Matters talking points” to slam ABC News White House correspondent Jonathan Karl for inaccurately reporting details about the way the Obama administration handled the response to last year’s terrorists attacks in Benghazi.

What do Jonathan Karl and James O’Keefe have in common?

“…Karl came to mainstream journalism via the Collegiate Network, an organization primarily devoted to promoting and supporting right-leaning newspapers on college campuses (Extra!, 9-10/91)—such as the Rutgers paper launched by the infamous James O’Keefe (Political Correction, 1/27/10).
………….
Several leading right-wing pundits came out of Collegiate-affiliated papers, including Ann Coulter, Dinesh D’Souza, Michelle Malkin, Rich Lowry and Laura Ingraham (Washington Times, 11/28/04)”

Amazing…”I regret that IT’s become a distraction from the story…” It. What is it? It is Jonathan Karl taking known bullshit from a dishonest and partisan source and using it to further that source’s agenda of smearing the President.

7 Vicious Babushka  Sun, May 19, 2013 11:54:52am

“Fake, but accurate.”

SO WHAT IF JEFFERSON NEVER SAID IT, IT A TRUEY TROOTH!!11

8 jaunte  Sun, May 19, 2013 11:58:45am

The “story” is still that the talking points were changed, and Karl knows the people who want to believe there is something suspicious and politically crooked about that fact will still believe it.

It’s a little surprising that he’s willing to sacrifice his credibility for the “story,” but that doesn’t seem to be affecting his employment prospects at all.

Karl is lying, or at least misleading badly, when he says that it was “obtained” — it was sent to him as a set of talking points. Why would we expect him to stop lying and/or misleading now?

If ABC gave a damn, they’d shitcan him tomorrow morning. But, somehow, television journalism has actually gone downhill since 2004. If you’d told me then that such a thing were possible, I would have laughed in your face.

13 AntonSirius  Sun, May 19, 2013 12:05:09pm

Since Karl won’t give up the source who apparently played him for a fool, I think it’s entirely reasonable to speculate whether or not Karl did see the actual emails, as he claimed, and just fabricated the quotes himself to create a story out of whole cloth jazz the story up a little.

Jon Karl - dupe, or liar? You decide.

Today’s entrant to “rightwing radio host in serious need of a visit by the Secret Service”: Pete Santilli.

huffingtonpost.com

Santilli criticized Clinton over the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. consultate in Benghazi, Libya. He also slammed Clinton over what he called “the fake hunt down of this Obama bin Laden thing”:

I want to shoot her right in the vagina and I don’t want her to die right away; I want her to feel the pain and I want to look her in the eyes and I want to say, on behalf of all Americans that you’ve killed, on behalf of the Navy SEALS, the families of Navy SEAL Team Six who were involved in the fake hunt down of this Obama, Obama bin Laden thing, that whole fake scenario, because these Navy SEALS know the truth, they killed them all. On behalf of all of those people, I’m supporting our troops by saying we need to try, convict, and shoot Hillary Clinton in the vagina.

Santilli also criticized Obama, saying he deserves the same punishment as Clinton.

“Barack Obama needs to be tried, convicted, and shot for crimes against the United States of America,” Santilli said. “And if anybody has a problem with that, then you are an enemy of our state.”

Oh look, Clarence Thomas showed his rampant Jackassery.

Asked if he ever expected to see an African American president in his lifetime, the conservative justice said he always knew “it would have to be a black president who was approved by the elites and the media, because anybody that they didn’t agree with, they would take apart.”

Hey Thomas, two (one?) words.

Rand Paul claims revealing memo exists in IRS scandal

While the Internal Revenue Service maintains it was not focusing on conservative groups out of political bias, Sen. Rand Paul claimed Sunday there was a “written policy” floating around the agency that said IRS officials were “targeting people who were opposed to the president.”
……
Pressed for more precise details about the memo he was referring to, Paul said he hasn’t seen such a policy statement but has heard about it.

I have heard that monkeys fly out of Rand Paul’s ass.

Louisiana House Votes to Keep Unconstitutional Anti-Sodomy Law
The Louisiana House voted 66-27 on Tuesday to keep the state's unconstitutional sodomy ban under Louisiana's crimes against nature law. The Supreme Court's 2003 Lawrence v. Texas decision invalidated all state bans on gay sex, declaring them unconstitutional. But Louisiana, along with several other states, has refused to strike the provision from state law. On Tuesday, the House rejected a bill, sponsored by ...
