The emails revealed in the government’s affidavit appear to show, however, that James Rosen’s solicitation of government secrets wasn’t nearly so narrow. The affidavit describes how Rosen assigned himself the codename “Alex,” and Mr. Kim the moniker “Leo,” and in their early contacts, explained the noble aims of their prospective relationship:

Thanks Leo. What I am interested in, as you might expect, is breaking new ahead of my competitors.

Sure, that sounds bad, as if James Rosen would jeopardize America’s contacts in a hostile foreign government just to get some eyeballs away from his competition, but surely, every reporter has this competitive urge. Although it was the first thing Rosen mentioned, there was another consideration. After outlining the kinds of secret information he hoped to get from “Leo,” Rosen summed up his intention to… report the news objectively? To serve the public?

Let’s break some new, and expose muddle-headed policy when we see it - or force the administration’s hand to go in the right direction, if possible.

Wait, what? Is that what a News reporter is supposed to do, force the administration’s hand to guide American foreign policy to the reporter’s whim? Separate and apart from the DOJ investigation, this email seems to indicate that James Rosen is not just a News reporter, but an activist intent on pushing his own agenda, with the stated goal of manipulating U.S. foreign policy.

Another possible interpretation is that Rosen knew that ‘forcing the administration’s hand’ is what Kim wanted to do, so he was providing him incentive to leak. Kim had to have had some motivation, and I haven’t seen anything about money being involved.

What happened in Britain should be a huge dang wake-up call for the British Government.

Britain has been having a miserable time for quite a while. Thatcher’s free trade doctrine gutted Britain’s industry, and with it, many well paying jobs. In addition, she helped foster the racism that that has alienated some Muslims in that nation, among other groups.

Then this has been compounded by the sheer incompetence of the Home Ministry, Ministry of Justice, and the Attorney General’s Office in dealing with nutcakes. Here is a good example.

Delwar Hossain Sayeedi

Delwar Hossain Sayeedi ; born 1 February 1940) is a Bangladeshi Islamist politician, and Muslim cleric. He is the Nayeb-e-Ameer or the Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami and was an elected member of the National Assembly of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2008. On 28 February 2013, he was convicted of crimes against humanity including murder, arson, looting, rape, and forcefully converting people to Islam during the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war.

This is how we dealt with him.

In 2004 Sayeedi was included in the No Fly List maintained by United States government’s Terrorist Screening Center (TSC). He has made speeches against the western world in the aftermath of the US-UK combined attack on Afganistan in 2001 to unseat the Taliban. He was also criticized for his comments on journalists who published reports about his activities in 1971, which were seen as threatening press freedom.

Meanwhile in Britain:

In July 2006 Sayeedi travelled to the UK to address rallies in London and Luton; his entry was cleared by the foreign office. Many British MPs considered his admission to the country to be controversial. In leaked emails reported by The Times, an adviser, Eric Taylor, said that Sayeedi’s “previous visits to the UK have been reportedly marred by violence caused by his supporters.”

On 13 July 2006, the British journalist Martin Bright released a documentary called Who Speaks For Muslims? It included Sayeedi and identified him as having extreme views. Sayeedi has a large following within the British Bangladeshi community. He was invited to speak at the East London Mosque on 14 July 2006; the then-secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, Muhammad Abdul Bari, supported his invitation.

Something like this was going to happen eventually. Britain’s Government been neglecting the most of its population to appeal to corrupt bankers. The rest of the nation has been left to rot. The safety net is being shredded to pieces, and people have committed suicide over the Bedroom Tax. And for all their bigoted shit, Cameron and his ilk have not stopped radicals from going in an d out as they please. The referendum for Scottish Independence, which will likely fail, should have been taken as a wake-up call. Unfortunately, it wasn’t now we Britain has had this horrific attack occur.

We just have a different political culture. Part of the problem is the parliamentary system allows for very small radical parties to function while here in the US they get absorbed by two of the larger more moderate parties. Also groups like the EDL was an offshoot of the football hooligan culture which is also something alien to us. And yes, the EDL is taking advantage of today’s attack. In regards to “but it wasn’t “Islamic” in any way”; Well, yes and no. I agreed that local Muslim communities should not be held collectively responsible but the same people will tell you that Islam is not a monolithic block, it’s a diverse religion. Unfortunately, today’s attack was “Islamic” and I’m sure there are people out there that are happy about it and think it’s a religious duty. Bin Laden was a Muslim and his actions were sanctioned by some religious scholars. It is what it is.

If Kim gave info he was sworn not to reveal, he broke the law. If Rosen somehow induced Kim to do that, he may have broken the law, but if he was just asking, he probably didn’t.

Another way to look at it is that ‘Islamic attack’ is actually meaningless. Islam by itself didn’t attack anyone.

‘Attack by Islamist terrorist’ is meaningful, but begs the question of whether the perpetrator really counts as a terrorist as opposed to a nut with some perceived grievances.

Calling it simply a “Christian attack” is wrong without the context of his extremism, but to pretend his beliefs have no bearing is also wrong.

So to call the events in London a “Muslim attack” or “Islamic attack” is wrong, but to ignore the likely Islamist nature of what we know so far is daft.

(It’s unfortunate that the label “Islamist” for the extremists looks and sounds so close to “Islamic”, but other terms like “Salafist” or “Jihadist” seem problematic in one way or another)

Mating season is just winding down. I have new neighbors behind me and they love hearing the frogs. I switched to new fish in the pond and bought some Celestials. Since their eyes point upwards they are pretty poor hunters and the tadpoles that escape the breeding area into the main pond aren’t in much danger of being eaten. Tons of tadpoles in the pond and many already have legs. I think I’ll have an early frogmas this year.

Since we’re parsing words here I wouldn’t necessarily call these guys Islamists. The Boston bombers weren’t terribly observant Muslims and didn’t seem very interested in Islamic law or a global caliphate. Anyways, not all Islamists are terrorists either. It’s a belief system.
There are right wing terrorists, left wing terrorists, Muslim terrorists, etc. No individual terrorist represents the entirety of their fellow believers. I think that goes without saying. But things are what they are. Language should be precise but remember when wingnuts tried to replace “suicide bombers” with “homicide bombers”? Some things are just silly.
The attackers today were motivated by their interpretation of Islam.

Me too, it gets draining and I’m focusing on other more productive areas of politics and news these days anyways. Also finding much joy in the garden. I’m really getting back to basics in the garden. Beets, parsnips, carrots, potatoes, squash, beans, peas. Not many fancy experiments, just the old classics. Our ancestors grew these things for a reason.

They liked real food.

Speaking of which, the loquats are having a very short season. Very dry spring combined with some record hot days has forced many to be smaller than normal.

I did get a few mulberries too, though there are only a few trees around. Very short season here; as a kid (back in fly-over country) I remember climbing mulberry trees to eat the fruit, and the season seemed to last longer back there.

BTW, I’ve never seen any kids here eat the mulberries off the trees. I’m sure some must, but the locals don’t seem so aware of what is growing around them.

Maybe they do, but the fact that Rosen specifically stated this was his goal for jeopardizing American sources in North Korea could be one reason why DOJ took this so seriously.

This will always be a source of conflict in democratic societies, because market forces inevitably lead journalists to value THE BIG EXCLUSIVE more than almost anything else - while governments must be able to keep some things secret, in a cutthroat international community with some really bad actors.

There’s no easy solution.

I have a dog that does that exact thing. Can run him ragged all over the back yard chasing the spray from the hose until he’s absolutely exhausted. Then he shakes himself off and comes inside for a long nap, which is the only way I get anything done without having him want to go outside every five minutes.
