Fake Outrage of the Day: Obama Fails to Salute Marine!

There go the idiots again
Wingnuts • Views: 44,334

So what’s the wingnut parrot’s chorus freaking out about today? A quick look at the right wing echo chamber reveals that they’re all lathered up about this idiotic story from Weekly Standard fake outrage peddler Daniel Halper:

OBAMA FAILS TO SALUTE MARINE! | the Weekly Standard

Under gray skies and intermittent drizzle, President Obama boarded Marine One at 9:30 a.m. EDT in an open press event.

A few White House regulars were atwitter (and on Twitter) when the President walked directly up the steps of Marine One without saluting the Marine on duty. He soon came out of the helicopter, walked down the steps, shook hands with the Marine and engaged in a brief conversation.

They’re all slobbering over this one: Jim Hoft, Dan Riehl, Doug Ross, Breitbart, the entire moron squad, all shrieking in unison about “OBAMA’S DISRESPECT FOR THE MILITARY!”

The fake story apparently originated with CBS’s Mark Knoller:

This right wing fake outrage has come up before, of course, and it doesn’t smell any better this time around. There is no “tradition” of Presidents saluting military members, and in fact it used to be considered against military protocol — until Ronnie Reagan decided to play soldier.

As David Alexander of Reuters noted in 2008:

Reagan’s decision raised eyebrows at the time….

John Kline, then Reagan’s military aide and now a Minnesota congressman, advised him that it went against military protocol for presidents to return salutes.

Kline said in a 2004 op-ed piece in The Hill that Reagan ultimately took up the issue with Gen. Robert Barrow, then commandant of the Marine Corps.

Barrow told Reagan that as commander in chief of the armed forces, he was entitled to offer a salute — or any sign of respect he wished — to anyone he wished, Kline wrote.

Another day, another huge outbreak of idiocy in the right wing blogosphere.

It’s kinda funny, for how much the right wing obsesses about our military, how little they actually know about it.

Playing soldier is a right-wing tradition which must be upheld at all costs.

Gee, and I thought we would have to wait until Memorial Day itself for a military flavored fake outrage over whatever Obama does or doesn’t do in observance.

If I were that marine I’d take that as a compliment. Especially after a little chat. Not sure how this marine WH assignments thing works but as a guess…He sees that particular marine regularly, and is kind enough to acknowledge the working people around him.

10 Charles Johnson  Sat, May 25, 2013 10:56:09am

Notice that they’re all assuming Obama went and talked to the Marine to make up for not saluting him. Does it matter that they have no way of knowing that? Of course not!

re: #4 jaunte

Reagan returned those salutes out of honest respect for the military. He had not served in WWII, but the conflict left him with a strong respect for the Armed Forces. But Reagan did that by choice, and it remains optional for presidents.

Fake Outrage is Fake.

When Obama does salute a member of the military in future, wingnuts can be outraged at him for assuming a military membership and status to which a civilian has no right.
It’s a nicely symmetrical outrage device.

I made that assumption as well. I don’t think that it too much of a stretch, to believe that is what happened.

But that Marine will remember that brief conversation for a life time, than any reflexive salute by anyone else.

Depends on what it is though…video and network drivers is definitely a no-no for me, but sometimes the WHQL drivers through WU may be about as good as you’re gonna get, especially with some older or arcane hardware.

Well, the drive sounded like it was going to explode but it finished with no errors. Now I have the inevitable hours of updates for a new install - Windows Update found 138 important updates. Is that all?

Only until those are loaded. THEN you need the 100 important updates for the updated system…

I have done my civic duty today my scaly friends.

The Husband and I opened the pool today(we have a rarity out here in suburbia, a 20x40 ft pool,45K gallons, with diving board, 9 ft deep at the deepest end). Wrestled the cover off and lo and behold, I had to rescue 4 little green lizards that had found their way into the pool while we were taking the cover off. It seems I’ve inadvertently created a lizard haven out in the garden, the little reptiles are all over the backyard this year.

I love them, they eat all the nasty critters that eat my veggies.

There’s only a few times where I’ll install WHQL drivers from WU, like for the Radeon 4850 X2 that I had (up until after Christmas, when I upgraded to a Radeon 7950) when I upgraded from Win7 to Win8 in October. This was because AMD had stopped major driver support for the Radeon 2000/3000/4000 series cards earlier last year and the unofficial beta driver that AMD did put out directly for those cards for Win8 blew chunks. Also, for a Hauppauge TV tuner card I have, the Win7 & Win8 WHQL drivers are pretty much my best bet to have full functionality in Windows Media Center.

Well, all I’m talking about mostly is the garbage that gets loaded onto computers when you install new programs and sometimes update programs or garbage like Java and Flash. Especially Acrobat. That gets just about everyone. Most of this junk is just marketing tools. Half of computer software today is a complete marketing snowjob.

Even websites like Twitter, Facebook, etc. It’s all about making money for a bunch of slimy corporations. I use the computer as tool but frankly, my interest in these nutcase computer evangelists and the corporate idolizing is not for me. I am not one of those people that has to update his software every time a new release comes out. In fact I’m still using one software that’s over 10 years old and it does the job nicely.

I started out expecting to do things with a pencil or pen. Those things could have been replaced quite easily and you could afford the tools just by mowing someone’s lawn. Now we’ve become slaves to technology having to spend upwards of 1000s of dollars for the latest software and hardware. Apple has people addicted to their products and their followers will go out and buy the latest iPhone almost yearly.

I used to run it on all of my machines and installed it on others’ machines that I worked on, but the detection quality has apparently gone way downhill over the past year or more, per stuff I’ve seen at AV-Comparatives and AV Test; other than that, it’s still dead simple to use and free.

It’s so funny how my career started in Technology..I played with computers as a hobby in the early 80’s. At that time I had completed my Nuclear Apprenticeship at Mare Island and was transferred to Bld. 690. The most bad ass Nuclear repair area for the Navy at that time.. We repaired and refueled reactors for Subs.
When I arrived I would say 90% of the workers were old school Engineers that had no idea how to work a computer..But could build or repair the most complicated reactors in the world. I got to show them how to print and make reports with Windows in those days. It was a small world with only a few qualified workers allowed to enter the building and work under cameras 24/7. We were running Windows for Workgroups in those days and things just took off for me.

One Paul Too Randian For Wingnuts

Whether or not you admire the bold individualistic leadership of Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on other issues, I know you will be disappointed and maybe even shocked by the immigration platform he outlined this morning before the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

KEY POINTS OF THE RAND PAUL AMNESTY

The 11-19 million illegal aliens would get to live permanently in the United States. One year after passing the amnesty, illegal aliens can start getting work permits to compete directly in the legal job market with Americans. New illegal aliens who are enticed by the amnesty will continue to have a relatively open access to U.S. jobs because Sen. Paul opposes mandatory E-Verify and other means to keep employers from hiring illegal aliens. Sen. Paul will force American workers to compete with far more new legal immigrant workers in the future. Nowhere in his long speech did Sen. Paul indicate any concern for the 20 million Americans who can’t find a full-time job or for the taxpayers who have to support them in myriad ways while 26 million legal and illegal foreign-born workers hold U.S. jobs.

Instead, Sen. Paul emphasized the need for even more foreign workers as if there can never be a downside of too much immigration

Parents of Kaitlyn Hunt’s alleged victim: We had no choice but to report lesbian relationship

The parents of a Florida teen told CNN on Friday they had no choice but to contact police about their daughter’s lesbian relationship with an older girl.

Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, was arrested in February on two counts of lewd or lascivious battery on child — a statutory rape charge — because of her lesbian relationship with a freshman classmate, who was 14 years old. The alleged victim’s parents say Hunt knew the relationship was inappropriate, but refused to break it off.

“We had actually told Miss Hunt that this was wrong,” the alleged victim’s mother told CNN.

“We had no alternative but to turn to the law and use it as basically a last resort,” the alleged victim’s father added.

Complete and utter horseshit. The two had been dating for months before then and the parents waited till she turned 18 so they could get her on felony charges.

Scumbags.

I could always tie a string to my tooth and car. Drive up to a cliff. Sneak a suitcase between the dash and the accelerator peddle. And let the car drive off over the cliff thus pulling mah tooth out.

What do you think? Discuss.

I think it will work

I saw it on a cartoon once !

Having gone through multiple dental issues with the Mrs. Fish, I do believe you might be right.

Wife’s free clinic has a dentist once a week. Check your area if all else fails. Downside is a ‘quick-and-dirty’ fix is extraction rather than repair.

Thanks for the reminder. We’ll take the 20x80s a few miles out if wife is up to it.

Yeah. Thats why I wish I was going to be home at that time. The view out here is spectacular

Or a Bears jersey in Green Bay (a Packers jersey in Chicago isn’t dangerous unless its near a sports bar on game day).

That one seems to have been caused by a train wreck. One with Union Pacific cattle cars.

# of structurally deficient bridges in the US; 68,842, 11% of highway bridges.

Yep, let’s continue to pretend otherwise.

Yet when we desperately needed to spend government money to put a tourniquet on the economy, we missed the chance to undo a generation of infrastructure neglect.

Yes. But a train collision leading to a major derailment in which freight cars slam into a bridge is related. Unless we plan on building bridges that are resistant to such an impact.

Or enforcing railway right-of-way maintenance requirements so they don’t derail as often.

I’m cruising on my new iMac today. It’s pretty cool. I have the Monster Win7 next to it.. I find it’s more fun to play on the Mac..But I do a lot of heavy lifting on the Windows machine..It’s a bunch of little things.. Like the scroll wheel of a Windows and a Mac mouse go in opposite directions.. Pisses me off..They can’t agree on anything standard even a freaking mouse..

That can be easily changed in System Preferences. Under “Mouse”, uncheck “Scroll Direction - natural”.

re: #206 Gus

This is the second time in a week we have had a bridge collapse not because of any structural defect, but because of a object hitting a critical piece of the bridge.

This one in Missouri stood no chance what so ever.

Woo-Hoo! All you folks talking about computer upgrades & VMs & the like - got you beat! Got my SE/30’s video sorted out again and it’s up and running in the living room. Just need to find a long enough Cat 5 cord to run to the router to get it back on the home network (printer access) and the internet as I want to see how LGF renders in 2 bit color (heh) in iCab … ;)

System 7.5.5, 32 mb ram & a 4 gb 50 pin disk. Was the highest of consumer high tech once upon a time…
