Tech Note: The Latest LGF Pages Bookmarklet, With Pop-Up Blocker Detection

Improved and new
LGF • Views: 44,212

On weekends my inner code monkey runs free, and that dastardly marauding primate has produced a new version of the LGF Pages “Create a Page” bookmarklet again tonight. The new feature: better handling of pop-up blockers.

All the major web browsers are installed these days with pop-up window blocking enabled, and it’s the number one reason for problems getting the LGF Pages bookmarklet to work. Previous versions of the bookmarklet would simply do nothing if pop-up blocking was on; you’d click the button and nothing would happen. Not very helpful in figuring out what’s wrong.

Now I’ve baked in some code that detects whether the LGF Pages posting window has opened, and if it hasn’t you’ll see a message with a polite, obsequious request to turn off your browser’s pop-up blocking. Much more helpful and informative.

Here’s the latest Javascript source — on the coding side I’ve cleaned up and re-scoped the way functions and variables are defined to keep them neatly packaged within the sections where they are used. I usually name variables a little more expansively, but since it’s a bookmarklet space is at a premium, so most of the variables are single letters. If you read the code, it’s pretty obvious what most of them do; ‘v’ is the version, ‘u’ is the page’s URL, etc.

(function() {
	var postPage = function() {
		var api = 'http://littlegreenfootballs.com/api/0.2/postRegex.json',
			opts = {
				url: api
			},
			browser = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase(),
			ff = browser.match(/firefox\/(.*)$/);
		if (ff && ff.length > 1 && ff[1] < 21) {
			opts = {
				url:			api + 'p',
				jsonpCallback:	'lgf_api',
				dataType:		'jsonp'
			};
		}
		jQuery.ajax(opts).done(function(lgf) {
			var esc = function(s) {
					return escape(s).replace(/\+/ig, '%252B');
				},
				popCheck = function(popup) {
					if (!popup.innerHeight) {
						popError();
					}
				},
				popError = function() {
					alert('To use the LGF Pages bookmarklet, please turn off pop-up blocking.');
				},
				popup,
				v = '1.0.3',
				f = a = q = w = '',
				u = esc(location.href),
				d = document,
				t = esc(d.title),
				s = esc((d.selection) ? d.selection.createRange().text : d.getSelection()),
				ob = jQuery('iframe').filter(function() {
					return this.src.match(RegExp(lgf.regex.embed, 'i'));
				});
			if (ob.length && !u.match(RegExp(lgf.regex.sites, 'i'))) {
				f = esc(ob.eq(0).attr('src'));
			}
			if (u.match(/www\.npr\.org/i)) {
				ob = jQuery('a.download');
				if (ob.length) {
					a = esc(ob.eq(0).attr('href').split('?')[0]);
				}
			}
			q = (
				'u=' + u +
				'&t=' + t +
				'&f=' + f +
				'&a=' + a +
				'&s=' + s +
				'&v=' + v
			);
			w = (
				'width=670,' +
				'height=820,' +
				'scrollbars=1,' +
				'status=1,' +
				'menubar=1,' +
				'location=1,' +
				'resizable=1'
			);
			if (popup = window.open('http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/lgf-postpage.php?' + q, '_blank', w)) {
				if (/chrome/.test(browser)) {
					setTimeout(function() {
						popCheck(popup);
					}, 200);
				} else {
					popup.onload = function() {
						popCheck(popup);
					};
				}
			} else {
				popError();
			}
		});
	},
	jqVersion = '1.9.1',
	d = document;
	if (window.jQuery === undefined || window.jQuery.fn.jquery < jqVersion) {
		var done = false, s = d.createElement('script');
		s.src = '//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/' + jqVersion + '/jquery.min.js';
		s.onload = s.onreadystatechange = function(){
			if (!done && (!this.readyState || this.readyState == 'loaded' || this.readyState == 'complete')) {
				done = true;
				jQuery.noConflict();
				postPage();
			}
		};
		d.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(s);
	} else {
		postPage();
	}
})();

And the highly compressed Closure Compiler one-line version that becomes your bookmarklet:

javascript:(function(){var g=function(){var b={url:"http://littlegreenfootballs.com/api/0.2/postRegex.json"},g=navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase(),c=g.match(/firefox\/(.*)$/);c&&(1c[1])&&(b={url:"http://littlegreenfootballs.com/api/0.2/postRegex.jsonp",jsonpCallback:"lgf_api",dataType:"jsonp"});jQuery.ajax(b).done(function(b){var e=function(b){return escape(b).replace(/\+/ig,"%252B")},c=function(){alert("To use the LGF Pages bookmarklet, please turn off pop-up blocking.")},k,h=a=q=w="",m=e(location.href), d=document,l=e(d.title),d=e(d.selection?d.selection.createRange().text:d.getSelection()),f=jQuery("iframe").filter(function(){return this.src.match(RegExp(b.regex.embed,"i"))});f.length&&!m.match(RegExp(b.regex.sites,"i"))&&(h=e(f.eq(0).attr("src")));m.match(/www\.npr\.org/i)&&(f=jQuery("a.download"),f.length&&(a=e(f.eq(0).attr("href").split("?")[0])));q="u="+m+"&t="+l+"&f="+h+"&a="+a+"&s="+d+"&v=1.0.3";w="width=670,height=820,scrollbars=1,status=1,menubar=1,location=1,resizable=1";(k=window.open("http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/lgf-postpage.php?"+ q,"_blank",w))?/chrome/.test(g)?setTimeout(function(){k.innerHeight||c()},200):k.onload=function(){k.innerHeight||c()}:c()})},h=document;if(void 0===window.jQuery||"1.9.1">window.jQuery.fn.jquery){var l=!1,b=h.createElement("script");b.src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.9.1/jquery.min.js";b.onload=b.onreadystatechange=function(){if(!l&&(!this.readyState||"loaded"==this.readyState||"complete"==this.readyState))l=!0,jQuery.noConflict(),g()};h.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(b)}else g()})();

It turns out to be pretty danged tricky to detect whether a new window has actually opened. Chrome returns a seemingly valid window handle even if the window has been blocked, so you can’t just check for a valid handle.

That’s the purpose of the setTimeout code at line 66 - if the browser is Chrome, it waits long enough for the window to be created, then checks to see if it has a non-zero innerHeight. Kinda kludgy, but it’s the best method I’ve seen.

They wont let little things like wasting millions, violating people’s 4th amendment rights, and doing more harm than good stop them.

Maybe this will be the time they finally convince a court to totally overlook all that fiddly business about the fourth amendment and no unwarranted searches to allow states to basically treat welfare recipients as criminals without any sort of proof besides their own ideology.

Drudge has just enough sense left to know that screaming at Obama is not what Americans want to read on Memorial Day.

After almost two years in office, Butler resigned under pressure, stating later that “cleaning up Philadelphia was worse than any battle I was ever in.”[36]

I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.

Okay I respect you / this board enough that I would not have brought it up if you were not okay with it.

I find it really depressing that you feel that being a feminist partisan position/point of view. Is there something that you as a republican find incomparable in your values with feminism? Because if not you should not feel they are a group you/the GOP can ignore to attempt to get the support /votes of.

To me feminism is the belief that women should be able to do all the same things men do.

Have sex freely without consiquences for pleasure with people they barely know with no risks besides STDs.

Get paid the exact same amount of money for doing the exact same number of hours of work.

Be given a long enough period of maternal leave (and men being given an equal period of paternal leave) to get to know their children and recover from giving birth before going back to work.

And so on and so forth (serve in the army alongside men as well)

The nearest I can figure the catalyst was some old man who was wielding a knife and got shot dead by the police. Here in the US that wouldn’t be a major cause for action.

Ohio school district considers teaching creationism and ‘Agenda 21′ conspiracies

The Springboro Community City School District officials is considering a policy (PDF) that would encourage students to “think critically” about “controversial” issues like evolution, abortion, climate change, UN Agenda 21 and sustainable development. The policy directs teachers to fully explore “all sides” of these issues.

“The role of the teacher in the presentation of assigned issues is vitally important,” the policy states. “All sides of the issue should be given to the students in a dispassionate manner. The goal is for the students to be taught to think clearly on all matters of importance, and to make decisions in the light of all the material that has been presented or can be researched on the issues.”

The proposal presumably requires teachers to bring up creationism during discussions of evolution and conservative conspiracy theories regarding the United Nations when discussing environmental initiatives.

What the fuck is this happy horse shit?

The bridal shower today finished my list of required activities for this trip so now it gets to be totally freeform until I fly back to the West Coast (and a normal time zone!) and do laundry and create photo books for the wedding albums that I owe my parents and my inlaws before the coupon expires on Thursday evening.

So, apparently, there was a deleted scene in “Angels Take Manhattan”

After Amy goes back to the past and we see the name on the gravestone, there is more with the Doctor and River.

RIVER: She made it.

She takes the Doctor’s arm and tries to guide him back to the TARDIS, but he’s staring at the angel.

RIVER: Come on. She’s gone now, Doctor. Amy’s gone now.

The Doctor breaks free from River’s hold and strides up to the Angel.

DOCTOR: What about me? Gonna take me now?

RIVER: It’s weak. I think it’s done for now …

DOCTOR: Tell your friends. Tell all the Angels. Next time I see you, I will grind you into sand. I will make a desert of you!

RIVER: Doctor, stop it!

DOCTOR: NO!

He pushes past River and strides into the TARDIS. River follows.

After the "one psychopath per TARDIS" exchange …

DOCTOR: I’m not a psychopath!

RIVER: You will make a what of the Angels? A desert, did you say?

DOCTOR: The Angels deserve it.

RIVER: Are they the only ones, or do you have a list? Don’t travel alone, Doctor, because I’m honestly worried where you might end up.

Well, that half explains why River wasn’t in the Snowman. He frightened her by threatening Genocide. Also, she likely was sent to the library in the intervening time. Which explains why he is a mangled mess by the time of "The Snowmen"

Try joining a PCOS support group. That killed whatever latent desire I might have had for kids in a heartbeat.

Watching these women share their daily temp charts, ovulation calendars, and all their near-obesssive efforts to get pregnant, up to and including surgery, makes me realize that I really am not cut out to be a mom. I just don’t have that overwhelming desire to bring another life into the world. I don’t hate kids or anything, but I just can’t see myself going through all that just to have a child, especially now that I’m 40.

I think I’ll stick to being the cool aunt. Or maybe a stepmom if I end up marrying a guy with kids. Or both.

this is the 1923 king oliver’s creole jazz band recording! king oliver on lead cornet, louis armstrong 2nd cornet (altho you can barely hear him here), with johnny dodds on the searing clarinet solo

listen carefully - dodds takes the first couple of solo choruses, and then king oliver takes his most famous solo, in the talking plunger-mute cornet style that he invented - it’s one of the most famous solos in jazz!

Another update on the grandkids:

The oldest is out of ICU(had a serious head injury) and may even get to go home today if his scans come back ok. Youngest is already home(broken arm and a black eye). The middle child has a broken nose and her lower jaw is not functioning right, they don’t know if it’s because of all the swelling(she looks like she went a few rounds with a UFC champion) or if it could be dislocated. She’ll be having scans today since the swelling has gone down enough to get good pictures. The docs hope to have everyone home by Tuesday.

They were in an older model Toyota Corolla that went off the road and into a ravine. The driver(my daughter’s stepmom - I didn’t know my ex had married this twit til this morning) passed out at the wheel because she was on Oxycontin. With 5 kids in the car(my three grandkids and two of her own). Her grandkids are fine except some bumps and bruises- that and having a complete freaking idiot for a grandmother. The State Highway Patrol has taken over the case and charges will be filed at a State level. She’s probably going to jail. Good.

Anyway, thanks for all the updings, prayers and well wishes. Keep praying for those kids and my daughter, my oldest grandchild may have to testify against his grandpa( the oldest told grandpa that his wife wasn’t ok to drive-he’s 10 mind you and grandpa made them all get in the car anyway)and the idiot wife in court, though he may be allowed to do it via video tape, we’re not sure yet. Daughter is seeing an attorney once she and the kids are home and settled in to see if she can sue for damages, she also wants to talk to the DA that will be assigned to the case. This woman is a menace, she shouldn’t be allowed near kids or a car.

Here’s some good news:

‘Crack baby’ scare overblown, says new study

Research in teens adds fresh evidence that the 1980s “crack baby” scare was overblown, finding little proof of any major long-term ill effects in children whose mothers used cocaine during pregnancy.

Some studies have linked pregnant women’s cocaine use with children’s behaviour difficulties, attention problems, anxiety and worse school performance. But the effects were mostly small and may have resulted from other factors including family problems or violence, parents’ continued drug use and poverty, the researchers said.

Because he earned so many other awards, you can be forgiven for that error. Audie Murphy was the most decorated American serviceman of World War II, by a good margin.

Murphy’s stated reason for standing on a burning M-10 TD and firing its M2HB .50cal at attacking German infantry, “They were killing my friends.”, also tells you a great deal about the motivations and motivating of men in combat.

Actually, Obdi, that isn’t really true. More than one study and many accounts by combat veterans have made clear the extent to which soldiers are motivated by their regard for their comrades. So my point actually has a fair bit of grounding.

No, it doesn’t. Audie’s story illustrates what the studies show. Audie’s story doesn’t show us anything on it’s own.

The issue of motivation in soldiers is a pretty difficult one to study, because even in anonymous circumstances there’s obviously societal pressure to say the ‘right’ thing.

I forget who proposed it, but are you aware of the three stages of a soldier dealing with front-line fighting?

re: #198 Dark_Falcon

Do you always have to be such a wet blanket? I swear, Obdi, you never let me get an uncontested line in.

Selective memory bias: you tend to remember the ones where I give you a hard time. But anyway, I’m trying to make a real point, especially on Memorial Day: We ask these guys to go out and fight, and kill, and die. At a certain point, it becomes telling them— they can’t desert, and you can still get shot for cowardice. The system is designed so that choice is severely constrained. If we gave every soldier out there a “Get my ass out of here now” pass they could use after they’d experienced front-line combat, a lot of them would use it. So motivation is already taking place within a backdrop of a system designed to keep them in and punish them if they try to get out.

I’m not discounting the motivation of camaraderie, I think it’s a really significant one and it’s definitely one that motivates a lot of soldiers. I’m just pointing out that those studies are kinda complex because it’s a highly fraught emotional circumstance, and, for example, soldiers might not be so willing to talk about bloodlust, about actually desiring to kill because they’re trilled by it on some level, and social pressure may cause them to respond in the way they think will reflect better on them, even in an anonymous format.

I think you’d be interested in the three proposed stages of front line soldiers, in this context.

In the first stage, a soldier feels invincible, when he’s told 20% of his unit will die he feels bad for those poor bastards, never imagining he could be one.

In the second stage, having seen people die and had close calls, he realizes he really could die. It’s during this stage that the soldier develops camaraderie in its highest form and is the most efficient, rapidly learning battlefield and tactical techniques and teaching them to others.

In the third stage, he realizes that he is very, very, very likely to die if he stays on the front line for a long space of time. At this point, the soldier often withdraws, both from his comrades and from challenging missions. He looks for more ways to avoid combat that he sees increasingly as useless. Other soldiers stay motivated by the idea that the only way home is forward, but they still tend to refuse to become friends with or develop comradrie with those who haven’t been through a baptism of fire yet, and often refuse to teach, considering their hard-won secrets precious.

So this throws another interesting axis through motivation; furthermore, in the third stage, what tends to help is having more comrades alive. The more buddies a guy has, the more likely he and they are to bond together to just get this shit over with.

This is one reason the repple-depple system in WWII was so broken; by slotting total greenhorns in with totally war-weary, cynical units, the green guys simply irritated the vets and the vets didn’t teach the new kids what they needed because they were too jaded, too focused on just themselves and their buddies.

And I guess I always tend to assume you’d rather hear about cool stuff then get a “that’s nice”.

Remember what work was like before the internet? I sat in behind the wine bar at the Ballpark Saturday because of a one day strike by the union. From 10am-4pm (with only one two minute break to take a squirt around the end of the sixth inning) I was pouring wine and popping bottles. After the game, I drove home, parked the car, and when I got out I could barely walk I was so exhausted.

I can’t even call what I do now work. Sit around in a few meetings and talk about how to get more work out of our employees. Most of my stress I’ve learned is self inflicted. The team can only do as much as they can do. So now I spend more time in those meetings trying to manage the expectations of my superiors. And even that isn’t all that difficult.

So here’s an interesting story for today:

WAYNESVILLE, Ohio — An 87-year-old World War II veteran has parachuted from a plane in an Ohio to support his ailing great-grandson.

Clarence Turner of Fairfield made the jump Saturday with an instructor. He says he wanted to generate attention for the plight of 10-month-old Julian Couch, who suffers from a lung disease that could require a transplant.

WLWT of Cincinnati reports that (bit.ly Julian is hospitalized in Columbus. A fundraiser is planned for June 2.

Turner also made a jump at age 85 to fulfill a goal to experience freefalling and landing as he did in the Army. He served from 1944-47, and his last jump was in Japan.

Turner says he also hopes to someday make a parachute jump at an older age than former President George H.W. Bush, who’s 88.

There’s a stray hanging around an empty house in the subdivison across from the one I live in. I’ve been bringing it food and water for the last several weeks trying to gain her confidence (she’s very hand shy and would bolt when I 1st approached her). After a couple of weeks she now sees my car pull into the driveway and actually comes to the houses front stairs knowing i’m delivering food or treats. It’s at the point now that she’s actually eating small pieces of burger or hot dog or ham out of my palm, but if I move even slightly she backs off quickly. Hopefully we’ll be at the point where I can corral her. I’ve already talked to the rescue agency where we got one of our current dogs from and they’ll take her in to get her all checked out and if she’s okay I’ll foster her till she gets adopted

Jesus Christ! So sorry to hear that. Hope everyone is okay.

What’s that, a boxer?

Yup. Star of the small screen as well.

I really should stop pushing that, as people are probably sick of it. But hey; in the future, every dog will be famous for 15 minutes.

re: #179 William Barnett-Lewis

An old girlfriend used to say the worlds best contraceptive is other people’s kids… ;)

Didn’t work with my wife. The first two years of our marriage she was teaching. The first year, there was one kid in her class with a particularly obnoxious set of parents, as in it was my wife’s fault if their daughter got a B.

Her third year of teaching would have included that girl’s little sister. Imagining dealing with those parents again helped kindle her desire to get pregnant.
