I love the one of the woman with her daughter. Totally pwns those who act like all PP does is tell women to get abortions. The asswipes don’t see the operative phrase here and always has been “pro-choice.” Anyhow, glad to see people fighting back the pathetic attacks on a good organization.

Really have gotten tired of this “fungible” BS. Here’s one for these jackholes: Medicaid, food stamps, and other forms of welfare free up dollars Wal-Mart would otherwise have to spend on its employees to pay to its execs.

13 HappyWarrior  Fri, May 31, 2013 9:36:07pm

You know what’s pathetic and I say this as a guy but hearing dudes claim there’s a war on men and totally dismissing the very real inequalities that women face in our society. So sick of hearing about how it’s so hard being a male in this society especially a white one. We got it easy. People don’t attack us when one of ours commits an act of terror like what happens with Muslims. Politicians aren’t out to limit something that has been affirmed as constitutional by the USSC. We at least us straight guys aren’t being told that we can’t marry the women we love.

One Walmart’s Low Wages Could Cost Taxpayers $900,000 Per Year, House Dems Find

Walmart wages are so low that many of its workers rely on food stamps and other government aid programs to fulfill their basic needs, a reality that could cost taxpayers as much as $900,000 at just one Walmart Supercenter in Wisconsin, according to a study released by Congressional Democrats on Thursday.

Though the study assumes that most workers who qualify for the public assistance programs do take advantage of them, it injects a potent data point into a national debate about the minimum wage at a time when many Walmart and fast food workers are mounting strikes in pursuit of higher wages.

The study uses Medicaid data released in Wisconsin to piece together the annual cost to taxpayers for providing a host of social safety net programs, including food stamps and publicly subsidized health care, to workers at one Supercenter in the state.

According to the report, Walmart had more workers enrolled in the state’s public health care program in the last quarter of last year than any other employer, with 3,216 people enrolled. When the dependents of those workers were factored in, the number of enrollees came to 9,207.

Honestly it should be in a company’s interest to provide good benefits to their employees. That’s part of the reason why Costco is not only a successful company but a popular place to work too.

I’m beginning to really not like Soundcloud. It seems they keep trying to make the interface simpler, and to do that they are taking away the ability to search.

It’s not obvious on how one can search for a string and filter the results by music tags, for instance.

I suspect it’s about trying to shape the users’ choices down to whatever the powers that be want to be heard.

And if you try to switch back to the “old” (and superior) interface and try to do a search, this is what it gives me:

Sorry, search is currently not available. Please try again.

Anyway, for a quiet late night, let’s test if the soundcloud embed is working:

Wald called 911 and said he had killed Conley after he caught him ‘fornicating’ with his 41-year-old wife, according to police.

Flores testified during the trial that she was drunk on cognac and could remember almost nothing from that night.

Conley’s relatives, who were in court to hear the verdict, could be seen silently weeping when Wald was acquitted. Afterwards, one family member said he was disappointed by the outcome of the trial, the station WTSP reported.

Flores lived with Conley before she married Wald five months last year. She is Wald’s fifth wife.

Ms Flores was arrested last October - just two weeks before she and Wald were married - for allegedly firing a shot of Conley.

She said he came over and refused to leave. Conley told police Flores invited him back to the home they used to share.

She and Conley, who had a record of petty thefts and worked as a laborer, had shared a house next door to Wald in the community of Brandon.

Flores allegedly shot at Conley at 3am on October 19. She and Wald were dating then and he bailed her out of jail. Those charges were later dropped.

Ms Flores and Wald married on October 25.

Wald, a U.S. Army veteran, has a 20-year-old daughter with a previous wife.

Another person in my dad’s generation, an older family friend, passed away. At 82, he’d had a good run, but it still feels fundamentally unfair.

He was a great guy, with five kids that he somehow gave individual attention to; they all turned out great. He was a veteran, serving quietly and never speaking much to anyone that I know of about what he did, saying it ‘wasn’t much’, but I know he was front-line infantry in Korea. He marched in the Civil Rights marches, he worked at a house for veterans that were having a lot of trouble readjusting. He was a generous and kind man.

His main opposition to lax gun ownership was the large number of his vets that he’d had shoot themselves. Those that took pills, the second most common form of suicide attempt, they were usually able to save. Those that tried to hang themselves often failed. But the gun suicides almost always succeeded, and it broke his heart every time.

It’s so hard not to compare him to people like this asshole and his asshole wife and just hate them for being alive while he is dead. But that’s the universe.

There’s a reason it’s Florida: America’s Wang.

I’ve lived in both Gainesville and Coral Springs. I liked the people I met in Gainesville (college town, lots of different people from different places), but there was nothing to keep me there. Coral Springs was awful, you couldn’t pay me to live there again. My inlaws are in Ft Lauderdale, they love it there. I’ll visit, but not for long.

I’d rather go to the west coast or NE to live or vacation.

The new White Wolf Kickstarterd-funded pen-and-paper RPG game “Exalted” has, among other things, an illustrated comic featuring a 12 year old girl being gangraped. It also has a lot of spells allowing characters to rape people. The player characters are also expected, in the adventure involving her, to participate in the gang-rape of the 12 year old.

I get how maybe one guy alone in his basement could come up with this shit, but this is an office of people going to work every day.

How does someone sleep after creating a game like that?

Moreover, who would want to play it? I ask because I know a fair number of gamers and none that I know well would touch this piece of crap. Nor would the game stores I frequent sell it or allow it to be played there.

Yeah, that’s what I don’t get. Okay, so you’re RPing that you’ve ensorcelled some woman and you’re fucking her. It’s rape, but whatever, you’re a shithead and you don’t care. But still, the person sitting across the table from you is another dude. The smell of cheetos is in the air. How is this pleasurable?

103 Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut  Sat, Jun 1, 2013 7:25:02am

Then again, I never understood circle-jerks, either. I walked home from a Boy Scouts camping trip once because everyone in the tent was like “Okay, it’s time for the circle jerk now” and I was like “What’s that?” and they said “We all jerk off together while looking at porn” and I said, “I just remembered I have a lot of Latin homework” and walked five miles home. I wasn’t creeped out or afraid, I just knew 100% I really didn’t want to sit around with a bunch of dudes jacking off, nor did I want to take a walk in the forest and walk back and be like “All done? Has the circle been jerked?”

The walk home was actually really nice and I remember it happily. A very clear night, lots of starlight and moonlight, in Connecticut in the fall.

I’m sure the excuse is that they’re “exploring dark themes” since that’s the usual crap they used when romanticising the horror themes of all the other main White Wolf games. Mortals count for nothing in WW and exist for fun & food…

No, I never could get into VtM or any of the rest of their dreck though I did try Exalted 1st ed once - bought used & sold quickly. Not an inspiring world to put it nicely.

A friend of mine ran the only White Wolf campaign I ever found interesting. The characters were all mortal except for one very weak vampire, and they killed the shit out of those fiends. I never played with them but I hung out once while they did and it was actually really entertaining. I thought that’s how it was supposed to be played and then when I ran into the ennui types playing as the vampires I was like “But that’s easy mode”.

I don’t remember there being any fucking in Dungeons & Dragons…though I only played it once and thought the whole “I throw down my shield card!”/roll some 17 sided die/”Oh, you bastard!” exchange to be pretty boring and only lasted about an hour before I totally lost interest.

Next year is going to be interesting:

The Law on Presidential Elections accepted and put into effect on 20 January 2012 decided that presidential elections will be held in 2014 instead of 2012; within 60 days following the end of the seven-year term of incumbent President of Turkey Abdullah Gül whom will be the last indirectly elected President of Turkey. It is decided in the same law that former Presidents; Kenan Evren, Süleyman Demirel, Ahmet Necdet Sezer and incumbent Abdullah Gül cannot be nominated for a second term. Also, the Prime Minister of Turkey can be nominated for the presidency without having to resign from his post, although the former provision has been taken to the Constitutional Court. The presidential elections campaign will be held in an “American Manner”, where candidates can accept personal donations for their campaigns, however one person can not donate more than 8.259 TL (4.543 USD) for a campaign

True, but this is a bad time for protests. With things in Syria still horrific and the Sunni-Shia flare-up in Iraq, unrest in Turkey could well set the whole region on fire. It might be wise for the protestors to back off.

re: #127 Dark_Falcon

If Erdogan is as modern as he says he is, he will allow for the protests. If he wasn’t such a corrupt twatwaffle, this wouldn’t have happened in the first place. He was essentially selling off a park to developers who helped him and his party.

On 16 September 2011, the assembly of the Beyoğlu Municipality enacted to rebuild the structure; although the area falls within the purview of green space protection ordinances, development interests are exploiting statutes protecting historic structures in order to subjugate those protections; the rebuilt barracks is intended to be a shopping center. As of the time of the decision, no surviving portion of the barracks exist on site.

People should not subordinate themselves to other nations. Norway had the right idea. They may be close allies with Turkey, but they also were doing broadcasts into the country detailing the protests. In essence, I believe we should be Scandinavian on this. Allies with nations, but quite willing to call them on bullshit. The US should try to be more like Scandinavia.

About the actual catalyst issue, I’m with the protestors. Like my father, the idea of turning a park into a shopping mall pisses me off. The fact that its part of a corrupt political bargain angers me even more*. I just worry about things getting out of hand, is all. It seems clear to me the project should be canceled, and the destroyed trees replaced.

*: I omit my customary calling of such a bargain “Chicago-style”, because such a removal of a park in favor of a shopping mall would not have been allowed in Chicago at any point in my lifetime.

No, its actually worse than 1920’s era Chicago, at least in terms of the ‘asshole factor’. The Outfit would not have tried this, Al Capone being more inclined to pay for a playground at a park than try to use the park for a land deal. Granted, he did such things to buy public support, but he still knew better than to pull the sort of thing Erdogren is pulling. So congrats, Er-dog, you’re a biggest asshole than Al Capone.

The judgment of whether it’s a bad time for the protests will be made on an entirely local basis. If Turks see an opportunity to stop or reverse the slide to theocracy that they’ve been in, they aren’t going to let it pass because of how it might affect Syria. And it just might help things in Syria. Who knows?

And her drunken state may have had an impact on following events. It took a chain of events and breaking that chain at any point might well have avoided the violent outcome. A chain of bad decisions that culminated into what might have been a choice to murder or precipitated a horrible deadly misunderstanding, or someone decided no did not mean no. Whatever really happened it was a chain of wrong.

IIRC you refrain from all intoxicants right? When I step back and consider that perspective the view of causation of violence shifts from the objects of harm (gun, club, fist) to why they came into play at all.

It’s true many humans misbehave and are not to be trusted with dangerous things. But they have them anyway.

Often we’re treated like exotic flowers, who should feel complimented when people say stuff to us like, “All biracial women are so beautiful” or “I would kill for your skin.” One of the hardest things about growing up the way I did is feeling like you need to choose one racial identity over another just to fit in. The fact that strangers constantly ask you to identify yourself (forcing you to put yourself in a category) makes you feel conspicuous and gazed upon. You catch strangers looking at you. You know what they want to ask you. You know that they won’t leave you alone until you give them a rundown of your heritage.

So, this is just a stupid commercial about Cheerios but it means a lot to me. It shows interracial families and their children being normal and cute, not something to gawk at or to question.

re: #165 Political Atheist

And her drunken state may have had an impact on following events. It took a chain of events and breaking that chain at any point might well have avoided the violent outcome. A chain of bad decisions that culminated into what might have been a choice to murder or precipitated a horrible deadly misunderstanding, or someone decided no did not mean no. Whatever really happened it was a chain or wrong.

IIRC you refrain from all intoxicants right? When I step back and consider that perspective the view of causation of violence shifts from the objects of harm (gun, club, fist) to why they came into play at all.

It’s true many humans misbehave and are not to be trusted with dangerous things. But they have them anyway.

I’ll have glass of wine on occasion, but no more than that.

As for the case, it is indeed entirely possible that the wife’s ‘bring-home’ took things too far or took advantage of her while she was drunk.

Not much else to say about this case, since it ended in an acquittal. The civil portions of ‘Stand Your Ground’ ensure that there will be no wrongful death civil suit brought by the young man’s family, since the criminal trial resulted in a jury finding that the husband reasonably believed the young man was committing a forcible felony.

And remember, any time you hear a shady story of what really sounds like a murder but the people got off, as angry-making as that is, remember that this also means there are innocent people who are walking free because of the same principle.

You remind me of the innocence project. Fine work they do, very fine work. Because our justice system sometimes gets it wrong. Some person screws it up along the way from arrest to conviction.

And our justice system is still endemically racist, with black people getting longer sentences for the same crimes, being arrested at much higher rates for crimes we know occur just as much in the white population, black people’s testimony against white people less likely to be believed, etc. etc.

This is why culture is as important as laws. Under the law, the races are equal, but in the action of the law, they are not, because the law acts informed by our culture.

182 HappyWarrior  Sat, Jun 1, 2013 8:56:45am

What would be nice if lawmakers cared more about law rather than appearing tough on crime to make re-election easier. I get turned off big time when I hear a politician democratic or republican trying to act tough on crime. Yes, criminals should be punished but we also have to realize that most people who go into our prison and jail system will be coming out. Let’s do things that ensure that they not only not commit crimes again but also become productive members of society.

Twice I have seen LAPD or maybe it was LASD assert to an individual during a “field interview” that they must have ID to be out and about. I’m just waiting for the time they toss that at me, cause I want that ordinance or pc number. I think they are lying to intimidate. Prolly won’t happen because I always have ID and I know all the numbers by heart anyway.

If you watch the news in any large city/metro area most of the news stories about fights and shootings involve minorities. (In Atlanta, I’d guess it’s at least 9 out of 10 news articles and TV reports) Like white people never fight or shoot each other. It’s frustrating, because I know for sure domestic violence, drunken fighting and all other manner of shit happens out here in whiteywhitewhite suburbia, but you rarely see it on the news unless there’s death or some weird twisty sexual aspect of the crime.

Sometimes you had to have been there to appreciate how things were seen in the past. ‘Julia’ was a TV show in 1968 that featured a black woman as a single mother with a job. Broke a lot of ground. Preceded ‘All in the Family’, ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’, and ‘One Day at a Time’, the white-people shows that also shook up traditional TV stereotypes. TV can have a positive cultural influence.

A couple month ago, there was an article in the Atlantic about Abdullah II of Jordan. There were comments in the article about Abdullah II not trusting Erdogan or the Muslim Brotherhood.

Hey Abdullah? Right on both counts. Alot.

Interestingly, Abdullah has also gotten Jordan into a joint project with Putin’s Russia:

Russia-Jordan RPG-32 Grenade Launcher Factory Opens in Jordan Near Syrian Border

A Jordanian-Russian joint venture to produce RPG-32 portable rocket-propelled grenade launchers in Jordan has been confirmed by the Russian arms manufacturer, Russian Technologies.

Yesterday King Abdullah II and Russian Technologies CEO Sergei Chemezov attended the factory’s inauguration, officially a factory of the JADARA Equipment and Defence Systems Company (JRESCO), about 10 miles northeast of the Jordan’s capital city of Amman. Russian media is reporting that when the Jordanian King saw the weapon in action, he stood and applauded for several minutes (as is often the prerogative of kings at weapon exhibitions).

“The RPG-32 is one of the most advanced weapon systems [in the world] capable of effectively engaging the majority of armored vehicles as well as other military targets,” Chemezov told reporters.

The new weapons factory has been built and equipped by Jordan while Rosoboronexport, part of Russian Technologies, is said to be supplying components. Grenade launchers will be assembled in Jordan while Russian engineers will oversee production.

SNIP

Designed and developed by Bazalt Science & Production Association, the “Nashab” RPG-32 consists of a two-piece modular unit: one part is a reusable firing/sighting unit, described as the launcher, and the other is a disposable container holding either an anti-tank or thermobaric round. RPG-32 fires either 72.5 or 105mm rounds with a blast radius of 700 meters and has earned a reputation for its ability to be safely fired in semi-confined spaces (like those characteristic of urban warfare). Units are said to have a barrel life of around 200 firings.

Husband wakes to the sound of his wife shooting their nine-year-old son dead before she begged him to kill her

The mother of a nine-year-old boy shot him five times in the home she shared with him and the boy’s father in Steamboat Springs, Colorado then turned the gun on herself, according to a preliminary investigation by the Routt County Sheriff’s Office .

Lisa Marie Lesyshen shot and killed her son Asher on Tuesday, leaving a note by the child’s bed telling the father Michael Kirlan that he was to blame for her actions.

Her husband was woken by the shots and called 911 as she asked him to kill her. She survived.

‘Remember you are responsible for what has happened here and you are the person that caused it,’ she wrote, signing the note, ‘Lisa and Asher’.

Receipts found in the home show that Lisa Marie Lesyshen purchased the revolver used to murder her son two days before the killing. The employee who sold her the gun had to show her how to load it.

The employee told Steamboat Today that Lesyshen stated she wanted the gun for protection because her husband was out of town, and needed instruction on how to use it…

Oh really? Worse than this?

The Dersim Massacre took place in 1937 and 1938 in Dersim, now called Tunceli Province, in Turkey. It was the outcome of a Turkish military campaign against the Dersim Rebellion by local ethnic minority groups against Turkey’s Resettlement Law of 1934. Thousands of Alevi Kurds and Zazas died and many others were internally displaced due to the conflict.

re: #222 Dark_Falcon

Some issues with it.

Due to embellishment of accounts of the battle over the generations some historians question the account that the inhabitants were given the option of converting to Islam to save themselves from execution. As author Nancy Bisaha points out, “historians have begun to question the veracity of these tales of mass slaughter and martyrdom. Francesco Tateo argues that the earliest contemporary sources do not support the story of the eight hundred martyrs; such tales of religious persecution and conscious self-sacrifice for the Christian faith appeared only two or more decades following the siege. The earliest and most reliable sources describe the execution of eight hundred to one thousand soldiers or citizens and the local bishop, but none mention a conversion as a condition of clemency. Even more telling, neither a contemporary Turkish chronicle nor Italian diplomatic reports mention martyrdom. One would imagine that if such a report were circulating, humanists and preachers would have seized on it. It seems likely that more inhabitants of Otranto were taken out of Italy and sold into slavery than were slaughtered.” On the other hand, it is admitted that a contemporary Turkish historian, Ibn Kemal, does justify the massacre of the Christians on religious grounds.

What likely happened is that Ottomans went in and started looting and massacre-ing, much like any Medieval Army.

Ah, gotcha. But yeah, the more I read about what the Jewish people have endured throughout the centuries. The more I admire them because until fairly recently Antisemitism was easy to get away with. Hell in many parts of the world, it still is part of culture but we’ve come a long way since the Nazis were defeated. It’s disturbing to read Western accounts of Nazi Germany condoning the Nazi persecution of the Jews because they “agree that Germany had a Jew problem.”

True, though Hungary had been subsumed by the Hapsburgs by that point. Ultimately the two empires were allies of Germany in WWI, with Austria sending troops to aid it ally in fighting the British and the Hashemite-led Arabs in the Levant. The end of the Great War saw both empires broken.
