The National Review Cover That Speaks Volumes About Movement Conservatives

Still fighting the Civil War
Politics • Views: 31,321

It’s rare to see a better encapsulation of the right wing’s problem with modern life than the latest cover of the National Review, as Rich Lowry apparently feels it necessary to defend the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln against the deranged kooks who have taken over his own movement.

Because the author has a new book to sell. Looks like NR is using the WND book marketing strategy.

This quote by Lincoln is a big problem for today’s GOP:

Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.

Is there a former president whom conservatives actually like? Other than Reagan of course, even though Reagan couldn’t win the nomination these days.

10 Gus  Mon, Jun 3, 2013 6:21:17pm

Seriously. They’re constantly harping on about how the old Confederacy was made up of Democrats yet they really liked what they were all about and while hating on Lincoln they’re also busy defending the Confederate flag. WTF is wrong with these people?

There was a creepy love-fest for Coolidge among the wingnuts a while back. Perhaps Coolidge is especially quotable on the subject of the government doing nothing for normal people.

New rule:

Anybody who doesn’t know that prior to the 60s Democrats were the party of conservative southerners and rural types and that Republicans were the party of liberal urban northerners shouldn’t be allowed to speak about American politics.

We can add the following corollary:

Anyone who doesn’t know (or feigns ignorance) that the GOP southern strategy has been the primary driver of changing party alignments for the last 40 years should shut up and let normal people deal with things.

Yeah. That one blows. Iceland just has a monster cat that will eat you if you don’t have new clothes. And an evil elf that comes and slams doors all night long, and another one that steals your meat, and another that steals your cream, and then one that eats your babies.

So kind of a disparity of danger.

Interesting. As I recall, Santa in Europe is often more double edged than the US/Hallmark version —- e.g., naughty children get beatings from Santa rather than just coal in the stockings.

Rich Lowry:

A portion of the Right has always hated Old Abe. It blames him for wielding dictatorial powers in an unnecessary war against the Confederacy and creating the predicate for the modern welfare state, among sundry other offenses against the constitutional order and liberty.

In short, Losers.

There’s no Santa in Icelandic tradition. The closest thing to him is a guy who will burn down your farm if you don’t give him porridge, and the guy who steals meat does it with a big hook through the chimney.

It’s one thing I suppose if he is out in some Dutch village somewhere that tourists don’t normally go, but in the freaking AIRPORT which is full of international travelers including oh I don’t know, a bunch of Africans, Caribbeans and Black Americans? Not cool.

The fact that Lincoln has to be defended at all 148 years after the Civil War ended is a sad statement about just how far movement conservatism has fallen.

So much for the Party of Lincoln.

This was inevitable, given the embrace of the Southern strategy by the GOP. Referring to racists in the present-day GOP base as ‘unreconstructed’ is a technical term with a precise meaning.

Its funny. When my wife and I visited the National Museum of American History in DC last summer, one exhibit contained examples of newspaper editorial and cartoon attacks on Lincoln by crazy secessionists and slaveholders. It was really creepy that some of the insults hurled at Lincoln, such as the “imperialist” and “tyrant” are some of the same buzzwords used by the tea-party morons today.
