Alabama lawmaker says he’s being stalked by strippers

A conservative Christian Alabama lawmaker has publicly thanked his wife for threatening several exotic dancers who he claimed were stalking him.

Alabama state Sen. Shadrack McGill (R) on Tuesday told AL.com that a number of strippers had come to his work at even to his home in the middle of the night during his last campaign.

The thing is that she can not accept a “living lobe” it has to be a complete lung set from a deceased person.

@DLoesch We’re continually told abortion s/b btw woman & her doctor. Why do they feel differently about Sarah’s lung transplant? #DLRS

Thing is, I’m pretty sure the doctors have taken her folks aside, told them the risks, told them that she requires lungs from a child and thus is already gambling on a child with a compatible set of lungs dying in her region in time to get them, and even if they got the lungs would still be gambling that she survived a handful of years while being pumped full of immunosuppressant cocktail.

45 GeneJockey  Wed, Jun 5, 2013 12:00:25pm

re: #40 lawhawk

Not to mention that I heard this morning that she’s likely only got 3-5 weeks, so it seems to me the likelihood of someone dying who’s a good enough match, and an organ donor, and all in the next 3 weeks is pretty small. And that’s leaving aside the question of whether someone else will die without this imagined set of lungs.

46 Vicious Babushka  Wed, Jun 5, 2013 12:00:27pm

Uh Dana, dr’s offices don’t have a supply of lungs just lying around, they have to coordinate through central agency to obtain organs.

The National Organ Transplant Act (NOTA) of 1984 called for an Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) to be created and run by a private, non-profit organization under federal contract. increase and ensure the effectiveness, efficiency and equity of organ sharing in the national system of organ allocation

OPTN Statement Regarding Lung Transplantation and Pediatric Priority

Recent media coverage has focused public attention on the needs of lung transplant candidates, especially those who are young children. Nearly 1,700 people nationwide await a life-saving lung transplant, including 30 children age 10 or younger. Unfortunately, due to the shortage of organ donors, many people must wait months or years for a transplant opportunity and some patients die without a transplant. Another 117,000 people are listed for other types of organ transplants.

United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) manages the national Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) under federal contract. The OPTN is charged with developing national policy to distribute available organs among all waiting list candidates. OPTN allocation policy is applied consistently to allow all candidates an equitable opportunity to receive a transplant, recognizing that their individual medical needs and circumstances will vary.

Every transplant begins with someone’s selfless commitment to save the lives of others through organ donation. While policy continues to be developed and refined to best meet the needs of all candidates, the public can help meet the needs of all who continue to wait by making and sharing a personal commitment to donation. For more information about registering to be a donor, please visit organdonor.gov You can also register and share your commitment through facebook.com [Exit Disclaimer]…

Question - I buy from Amazon all the time - if I use one of the links here to get there, do you get a commission no matter what I’m buying?

92 Gus  Wed, Jun 5, 2013 12:25:20pm
…The biological needs and circumstances of candidates younger than age 12 are different from either adolescent or adult candidates. One key difference is the size and lung capacity of donors and patients among these age ranges. For this reason, lung allocation policy differs for these groups of candidates and is designed to suit their unique needs. Children younger than age 12 have priority for all donors of similar age and size within a 1,000-mile radius before any older candidates would be considered. In some circumstances, a transplant center may determine that a child’s condition warrants a reduced size transplant from an adult donor. If the center wishes to consider this additional treatment option, these children will have access to adult organs once they are offered to adolescents and adults in the same allocation zone.

In 2012, there were 460 pediatric organ donors in the United States, including 114 between the ages of 6 and 10 years. Although there were only 11 lung donors in that age group, that number likely reflects low demand (two lung transplants in recipients aged 6-10) as much as organ availability.

OPTN policies allow status adjustments for specifically defined groups of candidates with unique medical circumstances not addressed by the overall policy. A request to adjust the status of a patient under age 12 so that they may be included in the allocation sequence for adolescents and adults is not within the scope of the existing lung allocation policy.

OPTN cannot create a policy exemption on behalf of an individual patient, since giving an advantage to one patient may unduly disadvantage others. However, the network routinely reviews organ allocation policy to be sure that it reflects the needs of all groups of candidates. In this review process, the OPTN considers public input as well as medical data and experience.

While the availability of organs remains limited, the OPTN is committed to developing and improving policies that give all groups of candidates the best possible opportunity for life-saving transplantation.

Lungs, like most human organs, are not simply plug-and-play. You can’t rip the heart from a small-framed office workers and expect it will be adequate for a large-framed construction worker. Even before you get into the size issue, you have to deal with blood type, tissue matching, if the recipient is healthy enough to receive the new organs, and so forth. And even if all that works for them, they still are facing a life of being on a constant supply of pharmaceuticals to keep their body from destroying their new organs because they view them as foreign invaders. The price of which is that their immune system is less able to fight off everyday infections and more dangerous bastards are pretty much a death sentence.

Right. Which started in 1984 with the National Organ Transplant Act of 1984.

101 Gus  Wed, Jun 5, 2013 12:32:06pm

re: #100 Gus

Right. Which started in 1984 with the National Organ Transplant Act of 1984.

History

Before NOTA was put in place, there was no clear jurisdiction on what property rights were for a human corpse. Instead, America applied a “quasi-right” to a corpse. This meant that the relatives of a deceased person had a possessory right long enough to decide how to bury or dispose of the corpse. This does not mean a property right which means they do not have a right to transfer, devise, possess, and lease the human organs and tissues.[2]

Due to a shortage in organs but a growing demand for transplantations, people began to use other means to purchase organs outside of a hospital setting. The organ market began to become a commercial market. H. Barry Jacobs, the head of a Virginia company, announced in 1983 a new plan to buy and sell human organs on the market. This plan put healthy, human kidneys in the price range of up to $10,000 plus a $20,000 to $50,000 commission fee for Jacobs.[3] This brought the issue out into the open. NOTA was a response to this proposal making it criminal to transfer human organs for valuable consideration for the purposes of a human transplantation.[4]

At the time NOTA was passed, there was an 80% survival rate for kidney transplants. A new drug, cyclo-sporin that had been introduced had also increased the survival rate of liver transplant patients from 35% to 70% in a patients first year of undergoing a liver transplant. This made it clear that the legislation was aware of a growing need and also growing shortage of organs when NOTA was passed.[5]

Fox News host: ‘Why is MSNBC devoting time’ to sexual assaults instead of IRS?

As competing hearings in the Senate Armed Services Committee and the House Appropriations Committee were underway on Tuesday, Tantaros said on her radio show that she couldn’t understand why MSNBC wasn’t devoting more time to the House Republicans’ fourth IRS hearing.

“What are they the place for breaking? Breaking wind? Breaking what? I mean, what are they doing over there?” she asked. “Sex crimes in the military, they are a real issue. There’s no doubt about that. I’m not going to just poo-poo it. What baffles me, though, is the way they prioritize these issues, the timing and tone of this.”

“Why is MSNBC devoting time to this issue?” Tantaros, who also hosts Fox News’ The Five, wondered. “There are so many other issues to deal with.”

Cuccinnelli Suggests IRS Targeting Virginia, Too

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) on Wednesday accused the Internal Revenue Service of deliberately holding up $125 million owed to his state.

“For a long time we thought it was glaring incompetence,” Cuccinelli, who is running for governor, told The Richmond Times-Dispatch. “But in light of the last month or two, we’re now beginning to wonder whether maybe there are more deliberate motives.”

The “last month or two” refers to the ongoing IRS scandal, in which the agency was found to have inappropriately screened and handled applications for tax-exempt status from conservative groups.

The money is Virginia’s claimed portion of a $1.5 billion Medicaid fraud settlement the government reached with Abbott Laboratories in May 2012. According to Cuccinelli’s office, Virginia’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit performed at least 80 percent of the investigative work, earning the $125 million share of the nearly $200 million asset forfeiture in the case. But federal officials have said, according to Cuccinelli’s office, that the IRS has refused to properly fill out post-case paperwork, holding up the payment. (In August 2012, federal officials told Cuccinelli his state would receive $95 million, not $125 million.)

“I have to openly wonder whether this is an intentional act to deny Virginia its asset forfeiture money,” Cuccinelli said.

Cystic fibrosis research gets boon from stem cell work - U.S. moral opposition vs. real results
September 8, 2004 at 5:08 pm admin No comments

Here’s the first solid breakthrough in stem cell research that federally funded U.S. investigators will not be able to take advantage of. The Scotsman online newspaper reports that U.K. scientists have isolated embryonic stem cells that contain the genetic defect that causes cystic fibrosis-one of the worst inherited-disease killers. “CF clogs the lungs and other organs in the body with thick, sticky mucus, triggering repeated infections which ultimately lead to death.” The thought is that researchers will now be able to work much more directly on finding a cure for CF.

China has already sworn to step up its work in stem cell research because the U.S. is hesitating. The U.K. just recently announced a 1-year experimental trial period of allowing this research-which may be why this particular development is just being reported (since they produced the cells originally a year ago and have since been reproducing them to the tune of millions)…

On his radio program today, Fischer said that the purpose of public policy is to construct barriers to engagement in sinful behavior and so it makes no sense to allow women to serve in the military where they come into close contact with members of the opposite sex .

Fischer then went on to call for gays to likewise be banned from the military, and did so by misrepresenting an op-ed from the New York Times to claim that 90% of the sexual assaults in the military are “being committed by serial homosexual rapists”:

I bet Fischer would support a policy where women aren’t allowed out of the home unless escorted by a male relative.

My sister works for AMC and was told a couple weeks back by her manager that the head office has sent down directives that no employees can work over 30 hours a week. To which I first assumed she had to be joking, since she regularly does over 30 hours in any given week because this place has a higher-than-average turnover rate. Then when told how they intend to cover the big blanks in their schedules, namely by hiring a bunch of new people, I alternated between laughing and just shaking my head.

When she told me about this new rule, she also said she was going to be limited to 27 hours a week. But she’s also been there for close to 5 years and cross-trained in every position with plenty of experience in them. Last week, she was clocked in at over 30 hours because of needing to cover other people’s shifts.

Word came out yesterday that Scott Rigell, whose district I fall into, came out publicly saying he would not endorse Jackson for Lt. Gov. due to his homophobic BS. And while Rigell draws the line at civil unions and remains opposed to gay marriage, I feel I can respect him for that after this announcement.

What a douche. Yeah, we don’t want certain people voting because they favor the party in part because our party has done everything possible to alienate them.

I would run that as a billboard in major cities all over the USA; I’d also run it as advertising on TV and radio.

I’d run it in moderate rotation; and I’d start doing it NOW in preparation for the 2014 mid-terms. Get that message out there, and hammer it home day-in, day-out.

The GOP is a white nationalist party.

Didn’t Rigell have another moment of sanity too? I remember you talking about it a couple months back. Good for him. Jackson’s homophobic and sexist bs is creepy. I wish Frank Wolf would say something. He’s the most senior member of our whole state’s Congressional delegation and he’s done nothing to condemn Jackson. I am just amazed that the GOP establishment is acting like they didn’t know Jackson was nuts. What, did they not watch the debates last year when Jackson was more wingnut than Allen?

Also this company has 4 locations in metro Atlanta with around 300 employees. If they’re doing this across the board to get out of providing healthcare then they’re going to tank in a big way. There’s not a chance in hell they can survive that deep of a cut in people to run their business, unless they’re planning on going bankrupt on purpose.

You know it’s funny they hate her because I actually first remember hearing about her when my Republican Congressman Frank Wolf whom I mentioned above spoke at my high school back in 2005. He recommended her book A Problem From Hell, Wolf’s always been big on genocide prevention which is why I sort of respect him though he’s your usual Republican on most other issues so he doesn’t get my vote. Of course, Chuck Hagel was then a Republican senator too and not a “Friend of Hamas.”

Rigell, at least from what I’ve seen, seems like the closest thing one would call a “moderate” Republican these days. By which I mean while he’s far to the right, he has lucid moments and does not have his head buried firmly up Rush Limbaugh’s ass with the rest of the party.

re: #151 Targetpractice

When you’re working in that sort of low-end retail/service industry, this sort of thing is the norm, and has been since WELL before the ACA. It was that way when I worked grocery in the early 2000s; nobody works over the legal/company policy definition of full time, hire more kids to fill in the gaps by working sub-four-hour shifts. It is done, and has always been done, to keep more money in the higher-ups’ pockets by paying more hours of minimum wage instead of paying actual benefits like healthcare and retirement co-pays and decent PTO.

The ACA didn’t bring about any of these practices. It just provided an excuse for scumbags to ‘justify’ them with.

Warner was from an older generation of Republican, the kind who thought Goldwater’s prophecy of what would happen when the religious whackjobs took over the party was more than just hot air.

Yeah he was. Davis was a boomer Republican and pretty sane. The nutjobs hated him because he didn’t always toe the line on so-con purity issues. It’s why he opted not to run for Senate because he knew he’d be toast in a GOP primary despite having been very successful in a Democratic district.

I worked in retail for 25 yrs, with a small stint as a daycare teacher in there. When I first started we had great benefits and insurance. Around 1988 or so that changed dramatically and it became the norm to work someone right up to the almost literal minute til they had 40 hours to avoid having to do anything worth a damn for the employees.

I’ll bet nobody on the right had any problem whatsoever with this clown’s behavior on the House Floor on Monday:

livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com

“Mr. Speaker, the President’s dishonesty, incompetence, vengefulness and lack of moral compass lead many to suggest that he is not fit to lead,” Bridenstine said. “The only problem is that his vice president is equally unfit and even more embarrassing.”

I’ll bet my paycheck they think that’s not rude and really classes up the joint.
