GOP Rebranding Watch: House Republicans Vote to Deport DREAMers

Rebranding: another GOP failure

Looks like we’re just supposed to forget about that “rebranding” thing where the Republican Party was going to be friendlier to immigrants, because they’re now completely back to that bad old xenophobia: House Republicans Booed as They Vote to Deport DREAMers.

To a chorus of boos from the gallery, House Republicans voted 224-201 on Thursday to approve an amendment that defunds the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The amendment, from Rep. Steve King (R-IA), undercuts the flexibility that allows the Department of Homeland Security to halt deporting DREAMers and instead focus on people convicted of crimes.

After the vote, the House Hispanic Caucus tweeted,”House Republicans just voted to treat DREAMers and undocumented spouses of servicemembers in the same way as violent criminals.” Only six Republicans voted against the measure.

As King’s amendment passed, the House gallery erupted in boos.

Every vote like this make it more and more apparent that the GOP doesn’t want to solve any problems we face as a nation, and the only course of action a sane person can follow would be to vote them out of office whenever they get the chance to do so.

Gohmert: Freedom of the press is ‘granted in the Second Amendment’

During a Thursday rant about news that the National Security Agency (NSA) had been collecting phone records from millions of Americans, Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX) seemed to be a little confused when he proclaimed that freedom of the press is “granted in the Second Amendment.”

Gohmert noted that NSA spying was just the latest example of executive branch overreach because the Obama administration had also gone after the phone records of Associated Press reporters.

“Many times these phones up here are used by reporters to call members of Congress, who have another constitutional privilege, under the constitutional — under the constitution that provides privilege for the information that is provided for — to a member of Congress,” the Texas Republican explained. “It’s not unlimited.”

“But that’s on top of the freedom of the press that’s also granted in the Second Amendment,” he added.

With Bachmann stepping down, its nice to see other Republicans stepping up to the plate.

The administration announced last June that it would halt the deportations for so-called DREAM-ers - which refers to young undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children. To require for the program, immigrants must meet several requirements, such as having come into the country before they were 16 years old, passing background checks, and attending school or serving in the military.

The move by Democratic Rep. Rush Holt comes as a Democratic state senator in New Jersey vowed to introduce a bill that would move the date of the Garden State’s November gubernatorial and legislative elections to the same day in October that Christie announced he would hold the general election in the special Senate contest.

Holt, a Democrat who’s in his eighth term representing New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, said Thursday morning in a statement that, “I ask for your support as I seek to serve as your Senator in that seat. The reason is simple: I believe I am the best candidate to continue the passionate advocacy for progressive values that Sen. Lautenberg exemplified.”

Your humble obedient servant did a stint on Holt’s staff a few years ago.

Surprised by this announcement but wish him the best. He’d be great.

The GOP has decided that they’ve lost their power (or are in the process of losing it) to the seculars and non-whites and feminists and gays, so they’re going to loot and burn the country as they exit. Metaphorically, it’s like Saddam Hussein setting the oil wells in Kuwait on fire once he realized he was going to lose that country.

The Texas GOP will take a burnt earth strategy and do one or more things seriously anti-democratic by the time that seriously becomes a threat. Expect gaming of districts, voter suppression, and probably changing the electoral votes to some sort of distribution by districts before they give in and consider actually changing their policies. Too many “last ditchers” entrenched in their power structure to adapt.

I’m one to think that it’s necessary to have a viable opposition party for democracy to function normally. Just look at what happens in places where one party always wins: machine politics and corruption. You need a viable opposition party to keep that from happening.

So it’s bad that the GOP is full of total loons and racists and religious fanatics. It would be great if it were full of respectable public servants (with Eisenhower on the party’s left and Goldwater on its right).

I find it ironic that Chisea’s mom raised him and his sisters while working as a teacher, given Christie’s painting a huge target on the profession in NJ.*

The GOP isn’t about sanity and picking moderate candidates that have crossover appeal. It’s all about getting the most extreme right wing candidates to survive the Hunger Games tributes to socon extremists who dominate the primary system.

Christie may think he’s got a shot, but unless he’s got a ground game to GOTV in the primary states, he’s going to find that his chances will go down the drain quickly.

Plus, he’s from NJ, and that automatically makes him a suspect coastal liberal RINO elite. That and he shook hands with the President and called out the GOPers in Congress for being ABSOLUTE ASSHOLES FOR BLOCKING SANDY AID FOR MONTHS!

Democrats opposed the measure and the addition of the amendment dampened Democratic support for the underlying spending bill. They said it’s not fair to deport people who were brought here as children. For many, America is the only country they know.

“We should not hold children responsible for the actions of adults and their parents. We should give them an opportunity,” said Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill.

FRC Doubles Down on Blaming DADT Repeal for Military Sexual Assaults

In his daily email to members yesterday, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins doubled down on his totally unfounded claim that the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell led to a spike in sexual assaults in the military.

Perkins writes that “most” servicemembers have become “victims — not just of assault, but of this new sexually-charged environment,” adding, absurdly, that when Congress repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell it “made sexual attraction a qualification for military service — on par with academic performance, community service, physical fitness, or moral standing.”

We’ll repeat: a study one year after the policy was repealed found that allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly has had no negative effect on the military.

Well if you make Texas something that they have to put resources in, that’s still a positive IMO. Honestly I am still amazed at what’s happened here in Virginia. I thought 2004 would be the year Virginia would re-enter the Democratic column. I was wrong but the Democratic Party’s presence here in state and national elections has improved here. I don’t like Bob McDonnell at all but I was really glad that he shot down quickly the attempt to award Virginia’s EVs based on districts. I mean McDonnell is a jerk IMO but he also realizes he can’t subvert the will of a majority of Virginia’s voters either. That’s why I wish some somewhat sane Republican had at least challenged Cuccinelli in the GOP primary/convention to force Cuccinelli to act somewhat sane.

Of course, American voters being what they are, he got voted him to office because “Hey, an ex NFL center with no political background would make a perfect congressman.”

yeah, was reading that McCain was stating that this should be a reason to exclude women from serving…. which gave me pause… thinking that if men are the ones doing the assaulting, why don’t we stop enlisting them instead?….. but then I woke up and realized that I needed to buy something on TV that I didn’t need and that feeling went away.

Kudos to the Dallas Police Department for acting swiftly on this one.

Dallas 911 operator fired for racist Facebook posts

DALLAS — A Dallas 911 operator has been fired for allegedly posting racist remarks on her Facebook page.

A News 8 source showed us screenshots of recent derogatory comments about African Americans and Hispanics on former 911 operator April Sims’ Facebook page.
[…]
“You want to call 911 cause your boyfriend put his hands on you and you want to press charges when you don’t even know his real name?!” the post said. “Sure lets make a police report for Dino, that is his street name.”

“I can count on one hand the black people I know who aren’t selfish,” another post said.

In case you might think that she was the victim of a hacked Facebook account:

News 8 tried to contact April Sims to confirm she was the one who posted the comments, but were unable to reach her. Wednesday night, she reached out to News 8’s Rebecca Lopez via e-mail and said nothing on her page has been deleted and she didn’t wish to speak with us.

On her Facebook postings, someone asks her if her page was hacked. She responds by saying she stands by every word.

Suppose I should elaborate on this:

The Hawaii Democratic Revolution of 1954 was a nonviolent revolution that took place in the Hawaiian Archipelago consisting of general strikes, protests, and other acts of civil disobedience. The Revolution culminated in the territorial elections of 1954 where the reign of the Hawaii Republican Party in the legislature came to an abrupt end, as they were voted out of office to be replaced by members of the Democratic Party of Hawaii. The strikes by the Isles’ labor workers demanded similar pay and benefits to their Mainland counterparts. The strikes also crippled the power of the sugar plantations and the Big Five Oligopoly over their workers.

I got that from someone high up in the Burlington County Democratic Party. Adler started voting against Obama to save his job. And it still wasn’t enough for the people in our district.

Update on the condition of the 6 year old girl who fell into that well.

The child was taken to George County Hospital, but appeared to only have a few scraps and scratches. Rescuers said she seemed to be doing well, and appeared most upset by the fact that her baby doll was left behind in the well.

Picture of the well she fell into.

Image: 22522242_BG3.jpg

The old well was 35 feet deep, but only 14-16 inches wide. Too small for an adult, but large enough to swallow the small child.

Damn thing should have been back filled a long time agao.

Here’s a good article about the problem Philly has had with the two slumlords responsible for most of the derelict buildings in Center City.

On a personal note, I was in Center City with the dog to visit the better half, who was running her firm’s Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Beautiful day. But in the back of mind, I was thinking about the collapse and how unfair and fragile life is.

I’m looking at all the ornate architecture and soaring skyscrapers and thinking, “You just never know. A piece of masonary or an errant air conditioner, and good night, Irene.”

It’s probably a good idea to remember how short a stay we really have on this planet, and enjoy it while you can.

On the bright side, I won tickets to see the Phils play the Mets at Citi Field. Debating about whether I should wear my jersey and hat up there. Probably depends on the severity of the beating I want.

Multiple reports indicate that people had reported unsafe conditions at the demolition site, but the city apparently didn’t find anything wrong. But there’s also reports that they were busy demolishing adjacent buildings without care:

However, Field disputes officials’ claims. He tells NBC10.com he witnessed demolition work being done on both properties prior to his contact with the city.

Field says there is “no question” that workers were using tools to demolish the roof of both properties.

We’ve requested comment from the Mayor’s Office and L&I over these claims.

Field said after sharing his initial concerns with the city, he continued to be concerned about conditions at the work site - as they progressed to the adjacent building.

“Later in May and as late as last weekend, I saw crews working late into the evening and on weekends at the site. That didn’t seem normal to me,” he said. “Last Sunday, they had a ladder on the roof of the Salvation Army and were looking at the adjoining wall.”

Another person shared a video of demolition work being conducted at 2136 Market Street on Sunday. In the video, workers could be seen using a backhoe to claw at walls as another worker doused the building in water.

Questioned about whether licensed contractors in Philadelphia need show they are trained to properly demolish a building, Williams said city code does not require it.

There are also questions about the guy who owned the building and the company he picked to demolish it.

In fact, everyone I spoke with said something seemed off - way off.

Everyone, apparently, except the city that issued a demolition permit for a building owned by infamous king of porn and serial slumlord Richard Basciano. The permit was issued to Philadelphia architect Plato Marinakos for Griffin Campbell Construction - led by a demolition boss who in addition to a criminal record, also has a history of violations on other properties he’s worked on.

Despite obvious red flags, the city is claiming everything was on the up and up, the demolition company had proper permits, the workers were certified, blah, blah, blah.

But I wonder how workers can be vetted when permits are issued through a middleman? And I wonder what, if any, oversight the project had? And I wonder if anyone from L&I ever inspected the site?

If anyone was monitoring the site, neighbors and construction workers said they missed some obvious signs of trouble.

Workers weren’t wearing hard hats.

They were trying to tear down the building in the dark with sledgehammers and flashlights.

And union carpenters working nearby said the wall that eventually collapsed wasn’t braced properly.

The demo was so screwed up, they said, they were literally waiting for the building to collapse.

Fuck you Texas.

Just read that story myself. This is just insane.

mysanantonio.com

During closing arguments Tuesday, Gilbert’s defense team conceded the shooting did occur but said the intent wasn’t to kill. Gilbert’s actions were justified, they argued, because he was trying to retrieve stolen property: the $150 he paid Frago. It became theft when she refused to have sex with him or give the money back, they said.

Gilbert testified earlier Tuesday that he had found Frago’s escort ad on Craigslist and believed sex was included in her $150 fee. But instead, Frago walked around his apartment and after about 20 minutes left, saying she had to give the money to her driver, he said.

That driver, the defense contended, was Frago’s pimp and her partner in the theft scheme.

The Texas law that allows people to use deadly force to recover property during a nighttime theft was put in place for “law-abiding” citizens, prosecutors Matt Lovell and Jessica Schulze countered. It’s not intended for someone trying to force another person into an illegal act such as prostitution, they argued.

Hmm, I see that the family of another child under the age of 12 with CF has filed to be exempted from the queue for getting access to a set of adult lungs for transplant.

Probably because the judge the first family appealed to ruled in their favor:

Judge orders Kathleen Sebelius to add 10-year-old to adult lung transplant list

A federal judge told Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to reverse course — a 10-year-old girl dying from cystic fibrosis should be added to the adult lung transplant list.

The ruling came via a last-minute emergency hearing sought by family members of Sarah Murnaghan, Politico reported.

It came on the heels of a decision from Ms. Sebelius — who was labeled by some on social media as a one-woman “death panel” — to not make an exception for the girl and add her to adult transplant lists, Politico reported.

Current law only allows for those ages 12 or older to be placed on adult transplant lists.

The girl is still far from being saved. Fox News said her name will be added to a list that already contains 1,700. Her condition is rare, and doctors say she’s not doing well, Politico reported.

Some are concerned about the long-term legal impacts from the judge’s order. The judge said keeping the girl off the list was discriminatory and that by failing to make an exception in this case, Ms. Sebelius was failing “to protect the very few children nationally who are subject to” the law, Politico reported.

If the man is white and the woman is black, yes.

I really can’t imagine the jury having the same verdict if the facts had been that a black man shot a white woman under these circumstances.

re: #117 Targetpractice

Not surprising that a few others are attempting the same actions to attempt to jump up on the waiting list - which is still a waiting list. A long one at that, and one which requires that someone else agree to donate their organs and die with the requisite blood type and other conditions that allow a transplant to take place.

1,700 people are already on this list. Move X up to the top, and everyone else has to move down a slot. That means someone else wont get a lung in time.

Or, the same girl who the RWNJ have rallied around despite this not being a political issue (though they’re doing their best to make it one), could still die before a suitable lung ever makes it into the donor list.

At the same time, these same right wingers oppose ESCR on grounds that it kills embryos, even if it may mean that scientists can one day figure out how to make artificial lungs to eliminate the need for donors or a waiting list. The same right wingers also oppose spending on basic research, hobbling the ability to advance technologies needed to make that happen.

And by ordering that an exception be made the judge is jeopardizing the chances for adults on the list who stand a much better chance of successfully incorporating a set of adult lungs. The policy was drawn up by medical professionals for very good reasons, yes the age 12 cutoff is to a certain degree arbitrary, but it correlates well with human development and the concomitant chances for long term compatibility.

My half brother needs a liver that nobody’s going to transplant into him because he’s a recalcitrant alcoholic. Now the girl is obviously in a different category because she did nothing to create her condition, but in both cases the medical professionals have decided that there are larger issues at play than the strict need of the individual who needs the transplant. The life of the donor has to be honored. As a society we’ve decided that the donor’s sacrifice should have some kind of lasting consequence, a reasonable chance at meaningfully extending someone’s life. When that chance drops below an acceptable threshold medical professionals do what they have to do, they triage.

They weren’t jumped on and the topic kind of withered on the vine.
I know a lot of them want to make this political, but the obvious problems with bumping a child up the list because her parents are actively lobbying for her (for which I don’t fault them-they’re her parents and they want her to live) rather than sound medical judgement is something most people can recognize.
