Glenn Greenwald: America Is “The Most Brutal, Sprawling Prison State on Earth”

Your WTF moment of the day
WTF • Views: 24,066

In a conversation about NSA leaker Edward Snowden’s decision to flee to China, Glenn Greenwald can’t resist approvingly retweeting one of the craziest over-the-top statements I’ve seen yet:

That’s apparently Greenwald’s excuse for why Snowden fled to China, and his argument against people who call him a coward: the United States is so evil, Snowden had no other choice.

It doesn’t even make that much sense. Normally, those that do submit are cowards.

If you don’t submit
to the most brutal, sprawling prison state on earth
you are a coward.

Can some one explain what this is supposed to mean?

Lets call a spade a spade.

That’s not what the implication is though. They’re not saying Snowden had to flee because of the drug war, he had to flee because he would inevitably have been tortured in a way that made Manning’s treatment look like a kindergarten time out.

That’s the subtext of the exchange.

I think the “cry wolf” factor has actually mitigated the reaction to the NSA revelations. Conspira-liars and other contrarian media have been declaring for decades that this and a lot more was already happening. Suppose the government did some day start assassinating domestic enemies, packing dissidents off to secret prisons, and somehow getting the mainstream media to cover for them. What would be different in the conspiracy industry’s message?

re: #100 engineer cat

the conservative movement these days has awfully wide fringes

Yes, but its one thing to claim that “Obama threatens to turn America into a brutal prison state”. Saying America is a ‘brutal prison state’, as Greenwald does, is seen as outside the mainstream for both parties. It is seen as bashing America as a country.

No, that surrey had to be retired. It’s leather components had paint thrown on them by PETA two years ago.

Conservatives have a 41% breeding

this is a touching and utterly unscientific faith in biological determanism

VOMIT

Poor “Hobby Lobby” is being “persecuted” for not covering reproductive health care for their employees and using “faith” as an excuse.

You’re American Taliban, just one small step away from Nazi Eugenics, we don’t have enough Conservatives? Why we’ll simply breed more of them!

That’s their excuse for why Snowden fled to China, and their argument against people who call him a coward: the evil United States. He had no other choice.

Is that Greenwald’s excuse for why he’s living in Brazil?

Is that Greenwald’s excuse for why he’s living in Brazil?

Greenwald’s reason is a perfectly good one: His marriage to a man isn’t recognized in the US at the federal level.

So, he hates Obama so much that he’s willing to smear our entire country and he still wants to be taken seriously? The winner of this week’s ODS competition is …

119 BaronHaynes  Sun, Jun 16, 2013 7:13:26pm

For someone as tenacious and thorough as Greenwald is about making his arguments, this story in particular seems to have generated a lot of careless hyperbole from him. Now that he has the national spotlight, he’s going Olbermann.

120 socrets  Mon, Jun 17, 2013 8:58:36pm

Oh please. The US is only a threatening prison state if you’re an African American male who smokes pot or a Libertarian without any common sense that decides to spill government secrets because of FREEDOM!! or some idealized naivete belief that the world is all sunshine, kittens, and unicorns that evil government is trying to destroy with its silly little things like laws. Greenwald and Snowden are both drama queens looking for attention and, apparently, seem to think that attacking the lesser of two evils is the way to go.
