Full House Committee Transcripts Reveal What Issa Wanted to Hide

Collapse

Here’s a pretty amazing development that may finally destroy the last shred of partisan hitman Darrell Issa’s credibility: Breaking: Full House Committee Transcripts Shed New Light on Genesis of IRS Targeting.

Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have just released a full transcript of testimony from a key witness in the investigation of IRS targeting of conservatives — and it appears to confirm that the initial targeting did originate with a low-level employee in the Cincinnati office.

It also shows a key witness and IRS employee — a self described conservative Republican — denying any communication with the White House or senior IRS officials about the targeting.

The ranking Dem on the committee, Elijah Cummings, has promised that the account provided by the witness — the IRS manager who supervised the screeners of applications for tax exempt status, a self described conservative Republican — would undercut Committee chairman Darrell Issa’s suggestion that the decision to target conservative groups had originated in Washington.

Cummings released the full transcript today in two parts, making it available to a select group of reporters, with redactions of names of individuals, and accompanied it with a letter to Issa explaining his decision, in which Cummings concludes that the transcript “debunks conspiracy theories about how the IRS first started reviewing these cases.”

The letter from Cummings to Issa concludes:

These facts are a far cry from accusations of a conspiracy orchestrated by the White House to target the President’s political enemies. At this point in the investigation, not one witness who has appeared before the Committee has identified any involvement by any White House officials in the identification or screening of Tea Party applicants for tax exempt status, and the Committee has obtained no documents indicating any such involvement.

How much money has Darrell Issa wasted with this series of fruitless, politically-motivated witch hunts?

Considering his excuse last weekend for not releasing these transcripts was a bunch of BS about how keeping them under wraps was vital to his investigation and how the release would scare off other whisteblowers hiding in the bushes, my guess is he’ll come out screaming that Democrats are protecting the White House by damaging his investigation and scaring away people who know the “truth” of the Obama Cabal’s secret efforts to use the IRS to destroy their enemies.

WSJ Columnist: Sexual Assault Debate Is A ‘War On Men’

Taranto brought up the case of Capt. Matthew Herrera, an Air Force officer accused of sexual assault by a fellow servicewoman, in a column as an example of Congress’ “effort to criminalize male sexuality.” Capt. Herrera was ultimately not convicted of sexual assault by his commander, Lt. Gen. Susan Helms—but as a consequence, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) put a “permanent hold” on Helms’ nomination to serve as vice commander of the Air Force Space Command, a career setback Taranto laments.

Capt. Herrera had testified before Helms that his accuser “flirted” with him, and a lieutenant who was present at the time of the alleged assault agreed. Therefore, Taranto reasons, Herrera’s accuser was equally at fault.

“It’s fair to say that Capt. Herrera seems to have a tendency toward sexual recklessness,” Taranto wrote. “Perhaps that makes him unsuitable to serve as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. But his accusers acted recklessly too. The presumption that reckless men are criminals while reckless women are victims makes a mockery of any notion that the sexes are equal.”

Flirting isn’t consent, you fucking fuck.

In the clip, Bee spoke to Evangelical Christian pastor Matt Slick, who insisted that bigotry and discrimination against Christians is a huge problem, and that gangs of LGBT people are out finding straight people to attack.

“Really?” asked Bee.

“Yeah,” said Slick.

Bee asked, “Are you sure about that?”

“These kind of events are not publicized very well,” Slick insisted. “Why isn’t this being covered?”

“Yes, why is this hypothetical violence not being covered, or recorded, or even occurring?” Bee asked in voice-over. “Maybe it’s because the figures are being hushed up by the Homosexual-Industrial Complex.”

Comcast/Xfinity wants you to share your home wifi signal to create nationwide network

The basic idea makes sense: Comcast wants to offer wi-fi hotspots all over the country to their cable customers when they’re traveling. They already have pieces of equipment in homes across the country. Why not use those leased routers to blanket the nation in a seamless Internet signal?

Instead of providing free access to any random person passing by, the networks will only be available to people with existing Xfinity accounts. Comcast claims that guests’ usage will not interfere with their customers’ connections, since the public connection will be on a separate channel and not take bandwidth away from the customer leasing the router.

If that turns out to be true, that’s cool. The problem, from our point of view, is that the “community broadband initiative” is opt-out for customers, not opt-in. New equipment will have sharing switched on by default. Customers can opt out, but have to be aware of the program, know that they have the right to opt out, and know how to do so.

This idea is only slightly better than Wal-Mart’s genius plan to have its customers sign up to deliver online purchases to other customers.

Thank god I don’t have Comcast.

Well, at least Bloomberg tried:

First Tea Party Case Labeled High Profile: IRS Manager

An Internal Revenue Service employee who looks at 20 to 25 nonprofit applications a day flagged a single Tea Party case as a potential high-profile issue in 2010, his manager told congressional investigators.

That decision later ballooned into a controversy at the agency that has led to resignations, congressional inquiries and a criminal probe.

“Because of media attention that he had seen, he had concerns about this being a high-profile case,” said the manager, John Shafer, in a recent interview.

The transcript of Shafer’s interview provides the clearest explanation yet of the origins of IRS scrutiny of small government groups seeking tax-exempt status, and it shows no involvement from top IRS executives or anyone outside the agency.

Scientists find potential genetic drivers behind male heart disease risk

[…]

The study found that men in haplogroup I have lower numbers of copies of two important Y chromosome genes in macrophages – the type of white blood cells involved in both defence against infections and atherosclerosis.

Specifically, men with haplogroup I were shown to have decreased expression of 2 genes: the ubiquitously transcribed tetratricopeptide repeat, Y-linked gene (UTY) and protein kinase, Y-linked, pseudogene (PRKY) in macrophages.

The team found no association between haplogroup I and traditional cardiovascular risk factors – such as high blood pressure, smoking and obesity.

[…]

Eek!! I’m in haplogroup I.

However, I lay little concern to discoveries like this. The problem with health discoveries like this is that they are non-actionable, and probably overly general.

Linda Harvey Likens Gay Acceptance among Youth to Believing the Sun Revolves the Earth

Mission America’s Linda Harvey yesterday attacked the College Republican National Committee for acknowledging that the GOP’s anti-gay stances were alienating young voters, who overwhelmingly support gay rights, and asking the party to “welcome healthy debate on the policy topic at hand.” She compared such a move to a science teacher instructing a class that there is a “healthy debate” as to whether the sun revolves around the earth because some “low-information students” think that’s how the solar system works.

While that is actually a great argument against teaching intelligent design and creationism in schools, Harvey said the situation would be like the GOP adjusting its rhetoric around abortion rights and gay equality in order to attract young voters.

Harvey even drew a parallel between same-sex marriage and racism: “Would a responsible party welcome a healthy debate on racism? Of course not.”

“Makes perfect sense until you remember that these young voters don’t know what they’re talking about,” Harvey continued. “Rather than pledge to educate the uninformed, the segment of these younger voters who are showing the effectiveness of propaganda but little wisdom; no, these researchers recommend the GOP back off of the truth.”

She accused the young Republicans of “ignoring all the evidence” about the supposed harms of homosexuality, which she said is “being packaged and sold to vulnerable children,” and catering to the “militant gay lobby.” Harvey even called for a third party based on Tea Party and religious values if the GOP turns into “the meaningless party.”

Please proceed.

I am deeply disappointed that Ranking Member Cummings has decided to broadly disseminate and post online a 205 page transcript that will serve as a roadmap for IRS officials to navigate investigative interviews with Congress. After unsuccessfully trying to convince the American people that IRS officials in Washington did not play a role in inappropriate scrutiny of Tea Party groups and declaring on national television that the case of IRS targeting was ‘solved’ and Congress should ‘move on,’ this looks like flailing. Americans who think Congress should investigate IRS misconduct should be outraged by Mr. Cummings’ efforts to obstruct needed oversight.

If we had a functioning press, articles about Issa’s latest and greatest would always include at least the following:

“The preceding material is accurate reporting of Issa’s comments. We have investigated these, and found them to be lies.”

The he-said, she-said journalism we usually get needs to end. It’s useless and weak.

She might want to catch up on the GOP’s efforts to overturn the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts, and racially-based voter suppression efforts.
Not to mention the significant number of neo-Confederates and bonafide “race realists” (aka white nationalists) with influence within the GOP party structure.

Denial isn’t just a river in Egypt. Racism is in fact a core value of the GOP tea baggers.

Keep in mind that Brazil has a bit of a reputation with its police force, especially in relation to the poor.

Brazilian police link to death squads

Evidence is mounting that police are behind a wave of death squad-style killings that has left hundreds of people dead in Brazil’s largest city in recent months.

Last weekend two officers were arrested in connection with a string of attacks by death squads in the west of greater São Paulo that left four people dead. They joined more than 20 others already being held for suspected involvement in death squads or for carrying out summary executions while on duty.

Authorities confirmed that two investigations have been opened into the possible involvement of a group of officers in the killing of 35 people by death squads in the greater São Paulo city of Guarulhos, home to Brazil’s main international airport.

In an Akin-esque clarification, Franks stated “the medical community - that is, the legitimate medical community,” says that unborn children are able to feel pain twenty weeks. Franks’ source of “legitimate” medical knowledge appears to be a single 2007 paper that used rats as test subjects. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists actually opposes the bill, as well as the validity of the twenty-week pain threshold.

I had a dream.

Off in the distance and approaching rapidly was a bus. Despite the distance I could clearly read a logo on the front of the bus.

The logo reads FREEREPUBLIC.COM

Standing beside the road I see Sarah Palin, Rand Paul and Ted Cruz. They are discussing the latest NSA revelations. They are waiting for the bus, clearly with some apprehension. Sarah is heard to say “Who will be next … So many”.

The bus draws closer, bearing down on our favorite three.

In a flash our favorite three becomes our favorite two. Sarah and Rand breath a sigh of relief. As the bus passes we catch our last glimpse of Ted, neatly positioned under the speeding bus

Marc Forster’s World War Z is the kind of film where you feel that the most interesting part of the story is happening just off-screen. The film concerns a worldwide plague of what can be called a zombie outbreak, but it is so narrowly focused on its merits as a star vehicle for Brad Pitt that it negates the nuts-and-bolts of its potentially terrifying story. It lacks any real characters beyond Pitt’s retired UN investigator, lacks any real context even when the characters are in a position to know just what is going on around them and, until the very end, lacks any real suspense to make its countless chase scenes and near-misses matter. World War Z is a film with little going on beyond its rote chase mechanics.

So basically, the film is missing everything which made the book so great.

The book was about the big picture, about looking at the zombie war from every angle and getting a sense of just how it was affecting people continents apart.

The movie seems to be Brad Pitt making himself look good for two hours.

Well, this ought to upend several types of soapboxes:

Prevalence of Consensual Male–Male Sex and Sexual Violence, and Associations with HIV in South Africa: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Study

From the Abstract:

Background

In sub-Saharan Africa the population prevalence of men who have sex with men (MSM) is unknown, as is the population prevalence of male-on-male sexual violence, and whether male-on-male sexual violence may relate to HIV risk. This paper describes lifetime prevalence of consensual male–male sexual behavior and male-on-male sexual violence (victimization and perpetration) in two South African provinces, socio-demographic factors associated with these experiences, and associations with HIV serostatus.

Methods and Findings

In a cross-sectional study conducted in 2008, men aged 18–49 y from randomly selected households in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces provided anonymous survey data and dried blood spots for HIV serostatus assessment. Interviews were completed in 1,737 of 2,298 (75.6%) of enumerated and eligible households. From these households, 1,705 men (97.1%) provided data on lifetime history of same-sex experiences, and 1,220 (70.2%) also provided dried blood spots for HIV testing. 5.4% (n = 92) of participants reported a lifetime history of any consensual sexual activity with another man; 9.6% (n = 164) reported any sexual victimization by a man, and 3.0% (n = 51) reported perpetrating sexual violence against another man. 85.0% (n = 79) of men with a history of consensual sex with men reported having a current female partner, and 27.7% (n = 26) reported having a current male partner. Of the latter, 80.6% (n = 21/26) also reported having a female partner. Men reporting a history of consensual male–male sexual behavior are more likely to have been a victim of male-on-male sexual violence (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 7.24; 95% CI 4.26–12.3), and to have perpetrated sexual violence against another man (aOR = 3.10; 95% CI 1.22–7.90). Men reporting consensual oral/anal sex with a man were more likely to be HIV+ than men with no such history (aOR = 3.11; 95% CI 1.24–7.80). Men who had raped a man were more likely to be HIV+ than non-perpetrators (aOR = 3.58; 95% CI 1.17–10.9).

Conclusions

In this sample, one in 20 men (5.4%) reported lifetime consensual sexual contact with a man, while about one in ten (9.6%) reported experience of male-on-male sexual violence victimization. Men who reported having had sex with men were more likely to be HIV+, as were men who reported perpetrating sexual violence towards other men. Whilst there was no direct measure of male–female concurrency (having overlapping sexual relationships with men and women), the data suggest that this may have been common. These findings suggest that HIV prevention messages regarding male–male sex in South Africa should be mainstreamed with prevention messages for the general population, and sexual health interventions and HIV prevention interventions for South African men should explicitly address male-on-male sexual violence.

233 freetoken  Tue, Jun 18, 2013 4:53:42pm

Here’s the PDF of that paper:

plos.org

In the Editor’s summary:

What Do These Findings Mean?

These findings provide new information about male–male sexual behaviors, male-on-male sexual violence, male–female concurrency, and HIV prevalence among men in two South African provinces. The precision of these findings is likely to be affected by the small numbers of men reporting a history of consensual male–male sexual behavior and of male-on-male sexual violence. Importantly, because the study was cross-sectional, these findings cannot indicate whether the association between consensual male–male sexual behaviors and increased risk of male-on-male sexual violence is causal. Moreover, these findings may not be generalizable to other regions of South Africa or to other African countries. Nevertheless, these findings suggest that information about the risks of male–male sexual behaviors should be included in HIV prevention strategies targeted at the general population in South Africa and that HIV prevention interventions for South African men should explicitly address male-on-male sexual violence. Similar HIV prevention strategies may also be suitable for other African countries, but are likely to succeed only in countries that have, like South Africa, decriminalized consensual homosexual behavior.

I see the head IDiot, Stephen Meyer, has yet another book, just released today:

Darwin’s Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design

A summary from fundamentalist blog aggregator AquilaReport, from an excerpt credited to Marvin Olasky:

[…]

This book addresses Darwin’s most significant doubt and what has become of it. It examines an event during a remote period of geological history in which numerous animal forms appear to have arisen suddenly and without evolutionary precursors in the fossil record, a mysterious event commonly referred to as the “Cambrian explosion.” As he acknowledged in the Origin, Darwin viewed this event as a troubling anomaly—one that he hoped future fossil discoveries would eventually eliminate.

[…]

Part Two, “How to Build an Animal,” explains why the discovery of the importance of information to living systems has made the mystery of the Cambrian explosion more acute. Biologists now know that the Cambrian explosion not only represents an explosion of new animal form and structure but also an explosion of information—that it was, indeed, one of the most significant “information revolutions” in the history of life. Part Two examines the problem of explaining how the unguided mechanism of natural selection and random mutations could have produced the biological information necessary to build the Cambrian animal forms. This group of chapters explains why so many leading biologists now doubt the creative power of the neo-Darwinian mechanism and it presents four rigorous critiques of the mechanism based on recent biological research.

Fiction
In the Korean drama Ghost, a member of the cyber-police team died in a high-speed car crash, and was found to have elevated blood alcohol. There was surveillance video of the vehicle speeding along a highway and sideswiping guardrails in the seconds before the crash. All the evidence seemed to point to suicide.

But the lead cyber-investigator received a thumb drive which contained some weird software. The guy who passed him the thumbdrive was promptly killed, which seemed to be a clue. Turned out that such software was probably the murder weapon. Alcohol had been injected into the driver’s bloodstream, but was absent from his stomach. Malicious custom code, like that on the thumbdrive, had been injected into the onboard vehicular computer, giving remote control of accelleration, braking and steering to someone else, and leaving the driver helpless.
