Guardian/Observer Publishes, Then Pulls New NSA Bombshell Story Featuring Birther Wayne Madsen

Wow, a massive fail by the Guardian/Observer tonight, as their latest BREAKING BOMBSHELL story on NSA spying features Birther (and all-around tin foil hat conspiracy theorist) Wayne Madsen: Revealed: Secret European Deals to Hand Over Private Data to America | World News | the Observer.

The article’s been pulled down now, but here’s a screenshot and the first few paragraphs:

At least six European Union countries in addition to Britain have been colluding with the US over the mass harvesting of personal communications data, according to a former contractor to America’s National Security Agency, who said the public should not be “kept in the dark”.

Wayne Madsen, a former US navy lieutenant who first worked for the NSA in 1985 and over the next 12 years held several sensitive positions within the agency, names Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain and Italy as having secret deals with the US.

Madsen said the countries had “formal second and third party status” under signal intelligence (sigint) agreements that compels them to hand over data, including mobile phone and internet information to the NSA if requested.

Under international intelligence agreements, confirmed by declassified documents, nations are categorised by the US according to their trust level. The US is first party while the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand enjoy second party relationships. Germany and France have third party relationships.

In an interview published last night on the privacysurgeon.org blog, Madsen, who has been attacked for holding controversial views on espionage issues, said he had decided to speak out after becoming concerned about the “half story” told by EU politicians regarding the extent of the NSA’s activities in Europe.

He said that under the agreements, which were drawn up after the second world war, the “NSA gets the lion’s share” of the sigint “take”. In return, the third parties to the NSA agreements received “highly sanitised intelligence”.

Madsen said he was alarmed at the “sanctimonious outcry” of political leaders who were “feigning shock” about the spying operations while staying silent about their own arrangements with the US, and was particularly concerned that senior German politicians had accused the UK of spying when their country had a similar third-party deal with the NSA.

Although the level of co-operation provided by other European countries to the NSA is not on the same scale as that provided by the UK, the allegations are potentially embarrassing.

Not half as embarrassing as this article itself.

To make matters even worse, it looks like this has already gone to print as a front-page story in tomorrow’s Observer:

Here’s Google’s cached version of the article (which isn’t permanent): Revealed: Secret European Deals to Hand Over Private Data to America | World News | the Observer.

Prop. 8 backers ask Supreme Court to stop new same sex marriages

The group that sponsored California’s Proposition 8 filed an overnight petition to the Supreme Court asking it to block a federal appeal’s court decision to give the state the go-ahead to resume allowing same sex couples to marry.

The Los Angeles Times reported that ProtectMarriage’s petition to Justice Anthony Kennedy accused the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals of acting prematurely on Friday when it lifted the stay on the injunction that declared the law unconstitutional before the end of the 25-day waiting period during which parties involved with a Supreme Court case can seek a new hearing.

“People on both sides of this debate should at least agree that the courts must follow their own rules,” ProtectMarriage chief counsel Andy Pugno said in a statement. “This kind of lawlessness just further weakens the public’s confidence in the legitimacy of our legal system. We hope the Supreme Court will step in and restore some order here.”

Here is an idea. How about the Prop 8 backers fuck right off and everyone else can go back to ignoring them?

Madsen spotting in a Guardian report on 9/11 truthers:

How the world changed after 9/11

On the day of September 11, Charlie Skelton attends a symposium of critical thinkers in New York

“…Wayne Madsen - a former naval officer and NSA operative - spoke of the atmosphere of “hype and fear” that still grips America, 10 years after 9/11. A fear that’s pumped into us, relentlessly, through our flatscreen HD Orwellian “telescreens”.

Madsen called for the release of the commission findings that Ludkowski told me about last night: “Let’s get those documents out of the National Archives!” But he noted that the man whose job it is to decide what gets released, the administrator of the White House office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, is one Cass Sunstein. The same Cass Sunstein that in 2008 urged the government to “cognitively infiltrate” alternative groups like the 9/11 Truth Movement. So releasing those documents probably isn’t top of his to-do list.

He’s also the same Cass Sunstein that wrote the first op-ed about Julian Assange - the CIA asset and “child of MK Ultra”, as Tarpley dubs him. But that’s a whole other can of worms …

Critical thinkers. /
Also, that’s not really an op-ed about Assange.

Wendy Davis: Texas GOP anti-abortion law is ‘big government intrusion’

Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) continued her public sparring with Gov. Rick Perry (R) over both a state bill that would close all but five of the state’s abortion providers and Perry’s recent criticism of the filibuster she initiated that led to the bill failing to pass on June 25.

“What’s offensive to me is, he’s made this very personal to Texans overall,” Davis told ABC News interviewer Jake Zeleny in video released on Saturday. “He’s awfully fond of talking the talk of small government, but this is big government intrusion, and it’s very unfortunate and sad that people’s personal health and safety are at risk for his political purposes.”

Meanwhile, Der Spiegel is “breaking news” about how the NSA is spying on EU diplomats.

Information obtained by SPIEGEL shows that America’s National Security Agency (NSA) not only conducted online surveillance of European citizens, but also appears to have specifically targeted buildings housing European Union institutions. The information appears in secret documents obtained by whistleblower Edward Snowden that SPIEGEL has in part seen. A “top secret” 2010 document describes how the secret service attacked the EU’s diplomatic representation in Washington.

The document suggests that in addition to installing bugs in the building in downtown Washington, DC, the EU representation’s computer network was also infiltrated. In this way, the Americans were able to access discussions in EU rooms as well as emails and internal documents on computers.

The attacks on EU institutions show yet another level in the broad scope of the NSA’s spying activities. For weeks now, new details about Prism and other surveillance programs have been emerging that had been compiled by whistleblower Snowden. Details have also emerged that the British intelligence service GCHQ operates a similar program under the name Tempora with which global telephone and Internet connections are monitored.

Specifics may be new, but that we’re spying on everyone isn’t. It would be a blatant derogation of duty to not be checking on everyone, friend and foe alike. We just don’t make these things public knowledge.

Puts a wrinkle in their The Observer is not the Guardian defense. Right, the Guardian was just promoting it big time and attracting Guardian regulars in the comments and being sub promoted in other sections of the Guardian including making the most popular articles in the sidebar of the Guardian. But yeah, it’s not the Guardian, per se. (Cough, cough, cough.)

The Guardian has used Madsen before, as in this story, too:

American navy ‘helped Venezuelan coup’
guardian.co.uk

“Wayne Madsen, a former intelligence officer with the US navy, told the Guardian yesterday that American military attaches had been in touch with members of the Venezuelan military to examine the possibility of a coup. “

Notice how he’s always cited as a “former intelligence officer with the US navy” as a way to give him credibility. But was he ever really in intelligence in the Navy?

Despite all the bluster, nothing has been done in violation of US law or the US Constitution. There’s lots of allegations and leaps of logic, but despite the sensationalism, we are doing nothing wrong by listening in on anyone outside the US - friend or foe. It’s made to seem unseemly but it would be criminal not to be checking on everyone - just as surely as everyone else is trying to do the same with us.

“…My problems started with Greenwald in November 2010, after Yasha and I co-wrote a story on the brief media hysteria that month over TSA “police state” attacks on Americans’ liberties, which, we reported for The Nation, was being led by armies of Koch-linked libertarians, some of whom were caught faking their outrage. I didn’t know much about Greenwald before reading his bizarre, hysterical smears against our journalism and our credibility on behalf of another Greenwald “hero” — this time, it was “Don’t Touch My Junk” anti-TSA guy John Tyner. Greenwald demanded that everyone agree Tyner was a “brave” hero standing up to government tyranny; and anyone who questioned the anti-TSA hysteria was a government operative enforcing two-party tyranny. Rings a bell, doesn’t it.”

RNC Chairman: GOP Does ‘Lousy Job’ Of Courting Latinos

“I’ll be honest here. In the past two years, we’ve done a pretty lousy job of connecting in the Latino community,” Priebus said in his remarks at a Chicago event for the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, as quoted by the Tribune. “We’ve missed out on opportunities to build better relationships. But that’s going to change.”

“I didn’t come here to convert you,” he added. “I hope that it’s clear that we want to earn your trust and your vote.”

“In the mean time, allow us to make fun of your heritage and accuse you all of being illegal and on welfare.”

What does Sarah Palin know about the principles of Lincoln and Reagan? And really the Freedom Party? Why not call yourself the Ice Cream and Puppy Dog Party? I’d be happier if she just left the public spotlight. She offers nothing of substance to the national discussion. I’d prefer a complete reboot. I could never vote GOP. Never. I wouldn’t trust their sanity or truthfulness or desire/ability to govern in any way. I think many others would feel that way.

I’d prefer an opposition party I might actually be able to vote for should they have a better candidate.

Watched The Omen which I hadn’t viewed in many years.

Overall it holds up fairly well. The beginning is a bit slow paced by today’s standards, but it still works.

So, I go over to IMDB to check out the soundtrack, and I see there is a new comedy being released, Hell Baby, complete with replication of many of the better scenes from The Omen and The Exorcist. It might be a funny movie, but I suspect that all the spoofing will get tired after the first 30 minutes.

The original is always better:

All they’re proposing is a comedy troupe for morons. It will never result in anyone being put into positions of responsibility, and that’s entirely the point. What it will do is bring in a lot of tax-free income for people in key positions in the “party”. I doubt they would siphon off enough lunatics to make the GOP a sane party again; wingnuts who are truly looking to win elections and not just looking for a media outlet to publicly yell at clouds will stick to the party with existing, proven infrastructure and huge cash raising capability; i.e. the GOP. Guys that hang Nazi flags in protest of Obama’s ongoing non-impeached status might donate to the Palin / Levin clown show, but corporate interests and Sheldon Adelson types won’t.

Interesting to note that Fishwife is now referencing libertarianism and considering her background of embracing the ideology of the John Birch Society and the AIP, it’s not surprising that her little covering stint with the Republican party as a vehicle for her ambition was necessary, if not just to hide her core fascist and racist ideology. For instance, look at how she uses “religion” without actually engaging in its practice herself. Even Hitler could mealy-mouth the tenets of religion to suck in the faithful to his insidious and unrelenting death march into the annals of anti-human ideology.

Sarah got on board the GOP ticket in 2008 because the fundamentalist right threatened to run their own candidate over McCain’s social record, which was too liberal for their tastes.

So it looks like she is just wrenching up the rhetoric to ensure more control of the GOP’s next ticket, which is exactly the role I saw her trying to assume: that of GOP Kingmaker.

Freedom Party in Harry Turtledove’s Timeline 191 alt-history series.

*spoilers*
Since Germany and its allies, including the United States, win the First World War in this alternate world, the German Nazis never appear. The Freedom Party fills the role after it arises in the defeated and humiliated Confederate States. Among other outrages, the victorious yankees force the Confederates to cede western Texas, which they cobble into a new state, named Houston, with its capital at Lubbock.

You’re giving her far too much credit. Even her fanboy base is dwindling. If she ever runs for any office again, she has to go full-tilt fascist, disguised as “patriotism”, which she appears to be doing, and that’s a real loser.

With the ultimate losers she picked, like Cruz, etc. and their War on Women gaining full steam now, it’s pretty obvious that the Repubs are already out of the mainstream themselves.

That’s the sinister beauty of the RW’s strategy: let’s say they find - and run - their mythical True Conservative. He or she is badly defeated; then they’ll simply scream, “Electoral Fraud!!”.

Win-win for them.

Romney also couldn’t really connect withe public, which if I’m to be honest I largely knew from the get-go, which is why I want ed on of the other candidates to take off. But none of them could do so, either aborting to Also-Ran Field or else crashing into the Great Southern Fever Swamp.

re: #214 Sol Berdinowitz

Neither can libertarians who just cannot believe that a person of color could possibly be as intelligent, educated, and “smart” as they are. It’s just more of the same privileged racism that colors those who think they’re the “smartest person” in the room or have been taught all their lives that some of the “colored races” are inferior. Talk about hubris…

As a southerner myself who has been doing this most of my life, I’ve talked with racists in the south who, after not being “talked down to”, can understand that what they’ve been taught is absolutely wrong and understand why it is harmful not only to people of color, but to themselves as well, as racism poisons discourse and affects their own humanity. But it’s a hard slog, nonetheless, since racism is so deeply embedded in our society, much of it a hangover from the days of slavery and white guilt which might not ever be expunged.

You also, to be honest, dismissed Romney as a candidate who stood for no one but himself and couldn’t be trusted, and you were right about that, too.

None of the other candidates were any better, though, except Huntsman (who is still pretty awful) and he never stood a chance.

Floating the idea of creating the Freedom Party (sorry, but the name’s been taken - the Freedom Party, the American Freedom Party, Peace and Freedom Party)? With Mark Levin? Outstanding.

Go for it. I wholeheartedly embrace the idea of watching the GOP implode as the supposed Big Tent deflates in the worst possible way. All this does will accelerate the regionalization of the GOP and even a marginal showing by this third party attempt in 2016 would throw the election to whoever runs as a Democrat.

The further the wingnuts push the GOP to the right through the primary process - where they possess a good deal of strength - the more likely my prediction of the GOP becoming a regional party, confined largely to the Deep South, will come to pass.

Should the GOP indeed become non-viable on a national level, they will either have to resign themselves to being a regional party, or divorce themselves from the wingnut brigades and reorient their platform and policies.

Not really. She’s just a truly dumb fascist, a novelty act who is more than likely just after money and fame, but unfortunately, her reactionary politics ring with some. Most people know what she’s about and as most people in the US didn’t buy into the “popular” fascist movement in the ’30s, they won’t today, although if the US hadn’t gotten into WWII, it might have been a different story. People take sides; as a reflex, it seems to be in our DNA, but sorting through the reasons that that reflex might be bad is beyond some.

Then why does this sound all so familiar? Just substitute “Blacks” for “Jews” and you have the foundation of the present RW movement in this country.

“In Vienna he acquired his first education in politics by studying the demagogic techniques of the popular Christian-social Mayor, Karl Lueger, and picked up the stereotyped, obsessive anti-Semitism with its brutal, violent sexual connotations and concern with the “purity of blood” that remained with him to the end of his career. From crackpot racial theorists like the defrocked monk, Lanz von Liebenfels, and the Austrian Pan-German leader, Georg von Schoenerer, the young Hitler learned to discern in the “Eternal Jew” the symbol and cause of all chaos, corruption and destruction in culture, politics and the economy. The press, prostitution, syphilis, capitalism, Marxism, democracy and pacifism—all were so many means which “the Jew” exploited in his conspiracy to undermine the German nation and the purity of the creative Aryan race.”

She is a reactionary demagogue, and demagogues have consistently proven to be dangerous, even when they don’t exercise actual political power but function as an éminence grise.

There is something going on with the Guardian and Wayne Madsen. I haven’t had the time to piece it together again. I can’t figure out whether somebody is “Dan Rathering” them by feeding them bad information, having them publish it, and then debunking it, or whether it’s valid info being discredited because it came from Madsen.

My point is, if you’re going to use hyperbole to describe Sarah Barracougar, dig a little deeper than Hitler. Be creative. Hitler’s a threadbare and overused metaphor that’s been reduced to casual insult level.

“Mom, Joey’s not sharing his ice cream!”
“Hitler!”
“Mom, Joey called me Hitler again!”

People need to step it up, be more creative. Hell, call her the Jar Jar Binks of the Sith. It’s more accurate and sends a shudder of “ooh…that’s fuckin’ low” down people’s spines. Hitler? Meh. Dude’s still behind Stalin on the most-evil list.

Its a shame about Johnson. Greenwald derangement syndrome indeed. [psst; there was actually a story of real significance reported over the last four weeks - is there a reason why you don’t want to discuss it?].

Eh. Not really.

Some of the commenters there are moonbats and off in la-la land, but Kos himself is a military vet that used to be a Republican. He’s actually a lot more of a pragmatist than some of the folks on his site. I can remember him going up against his own readers when some of them were demading that DKos only support ideologically pure Democrats for office. He told them outright to STFU with that noise because the point is to win.

My point is, if you’re going to use hyperbole to describe Sarah Barracougar, dig a little deeper than Hitler. Be creative. Hitler’s a threadbare and overused metaphor that’s been reduced to casual insult level.

Ha! I love it! Jar Jar Binks - one of those characters with limited appeal to start, who then did the exact opposite of growing on you, pretty much exactly like Palin, who became less popular the more exposure she got.

Something I’ve noticed over the last 4 years is how terrible British newspapers have become. There is a kind of Obama Derangement Syndrome going on at their establishment newspapers.

Most of the British press is pure crap when they try to cover American politics, and I wonder if the vast amount of right wing agitprop is coloring their views.

More questionable is why the Guardian seems to be trying to catch the libertarian (read: tea party racists) wave going on in the UK, which is filled with the kind of people who hate their guts.

When I was a child, in 1975 to be exact, my parents and I went to Sweden to visit my mom’s family. On the train, we encountered Anni-Frid Lynstand’s mother. She gave me an ABBA poster.

Autographed by all the members of ABBA.

Sometimes the Bad Craziness is simply too strong and the owners of a political site have to let it flood in or risk damming themselves off from their reader base. It’s been that time on the right for most of the Obama Administration, but the Snowden Affair has triggered a similar rupture on the left. I think that there are some very powerful folks in play here who are media savvy and have multiple pawns on the board and move those pieces when it suits them, call it a “go” board of national/international politics. I stand back and look at the bigger picture of things and the construction of the Tea Party as we know it has some hidden and not so hidden backers, folks spouting this ideal manifestation of leaveittobeaverland. Women stayed at home, made supper and put out. Kids, seen and not heard, much like minorities. Government handouts for me, because I’m hard-working and devout and a healthy dose of IGMFY. Those dirty Socialists wanting to redistribute our hard earned wealth into the hands of those lazy naer-do-wells and thus endith the meritocracy.

some huge tells in play…. your freedoms are impacted, they want things from us, redistribution of wealth, they’re coming to take our guns etc etc etc

media coverage of what is and isn’t a story, a complete indifference on reporting on policy and motives and potential impact and more on feelings and stenography but no one is doing much heavy lifting. The complete disavowment that we have one political party who’s entire agenda over the last six years has been ongoing public performance of Monty Python’s Argument Sketch. They have no ideas, no vision and apparently aren’t required to have one.

I look at the timing of all of this, 2012 is over, Obama has won his mandate, yet again, instead of being able to exercise it, i.e. gun safety, shot down, dead in the street, despite what the nation wanted. Consumer Protection agency, unfunded. Immigration reform, about to be strangled in it’s cradle and we return to culture wars 24/7. Since that isn’t selling, we have made up/ginned up scandals piqued to gather interest from the right because it’s summer and they have to take the focus on the great big session of fail and dammit, this gun safety shit is getting uncomfortable. So Benghazi, AP leak story, IRS. Strikes one two and three as they all go down under the weight of the usual R bumfuckery and exposition that the US doesn’t like it’s spies outed, that Citizens United fucked over the IRS’ capability to tell what are zebras and what are horses and continues to expose the R’s for the duplicitous bastards that they are in milking the data for their own ends just like they did with Benghazi.

So the haymakers from the Right failed to land and now, they’re throwing a cross with their left, hoping to find the guard down as this Admin continues in good faith to run by the laws on the books. This punch has been so badly thrown, that we now will completely ignore anything stated from this side as they’ve lost all credibility and are now nothing more than a voice in the hinterlands…. so what’s next? Paid commandos to attempt to take down the WH and declare a new Fascist State? These guys have been desperate to smear this administration, I just wonder how many arrows they have left in their quiver.

These periodic purges, which are almost always driven by the more extreme elements, are why much of our political culture is counterproductive. Eventually it alienates the more moderate and reasonable people. Site like Dkos do serve a function in pushing for more progressive candidates but I think ultimately they do as much damage by alienating people they should be trying to persuade.

Depends on how far (and how much) “they” (meaning any blog) is willing to push it. Things seem peaceful so far. I suspect the police are afraid of the military and are going to behave themselves, maybe even to the point of letting the protesters run wild if they choose to. It’ll be an interesting day. Curiously I can’t find live video coverage. Al Jazeera isn’t covering this.

17:50 Al-Gamaa Al-Islamyia issues a statement stressing its commitment to peaceful protests in support of the president’s legitimacy, adding that it has not ordered any of its members to carry weapons.

The statement accuses the media of bias against Islamists, alleging that the mainstream media ignores the opposition’s crimes and the crimes of police officers against bearded men.

“The continuous attack on bearded men on public transport might compel some to carry tools for self defence,” the statement adds

Egyptian TV staff on strike against curbs on protests coverage

Employees in Egypt’s state-owned Nile News today said they will go on strike, objecting to alleged interference by the ruling party in the telecast of the ongoing protests against President Mohammed Mursi.

The employees said in a statement that the “management was impeding them from performing professionally”, alleging that the Muslim Brotherhood sent its men to the TV station to control studio guests being interviewed and influence coverage of the anti-Mursi protests.

They said, they were instructed to shoot the protests from narrow angles and to try and belittle the size of the protesters.

Jim DeMint: Women want to be forced to have ultrasounds

Some women like being forced to have an ultrasound before receiving an abortion, according to former Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC).

Republicans in state legislatures across the country have pushed legislation that requires women to undergo an ultrasound procedure 24 hours before terminating their pregnancy. The so-called “informed consent” laws usually require women to be given a picture of the fetus and be shown a fetal heartbeat, along with general information about abortion.

“The more the ultrasounds have become part of the law, where a woman gets the opportunity to see that there’s a real child, it’s beginning to change minds, and I think that’s a good thing,” DeMint said on NBC’s Meet the Press. “It’s time that the 3,000 babies we lose every day have some people speaking up for them.”

DeMint, however, insisted that some women wanted the state to force them to have an ultrasound.

“She’s forgetting about the thousands of women who want an informed choice, who want the opportunity to get a free ultrasound, which they can get not from Planned Parenthood but from a lot of these pregnancy centers.”

Newest host of “Coast to Coast” ….

A recent guest, not a host (that’s still primarily Noori’s job); however, I see that Alex Jones and Jerome Corsi are also on the recent guests list.

I miss Art Bell; at least he was entertaining and engaging when he had the batshit crazy guests on. Noori’s like hearing paint dry.

ALERT: For The Record

Tinfoil is no longer made of tin. It is now made of aluminum.

Protip: the correct term for Americans to find “tin foil” overseas is “baking foil”. Asking for “tin foil” or American pronounced “aluminium foil” will just result in blank stares.

Not yet, though I see that Alex Jones and Jerome Corsi are on the recent guests list.

ahhh — I see he is the shortwave version. George Noory is still the AM version. Subtle branding association, I notice he also uses the term “infowars” a few times, even though he’s not Alex Jones.
