The Glenn Greenwald-Fox News Convergence

A revealing convergence of agendas
Wingnuts • Views: 27,909

Coming up tomorrow on the most amazingly stupid right wing TV show that has ever existed:

I’m so happy to see Glenn Greenwald giving Fox News viewers more reasons to hate Barack Obama. It’s a revealing convergence of far left and far right agendas.

We have to privatize all of its functions to efficient, responsible corporate entities, and then corruption will no longer be an issue.

Charles Johnson,

They will not fight. They will be too busy bashing Obama, so a Republican can win the next election and the country can go back to spying on its citizens and Fox can go back to ignoring such behavior.

/Cynicism

There are ostensibly “news” shows on Fox News, and there are ostensibly “journalists” on Fox. Greenwald appearance is on a show that is barren of news OR journalists. The only and only reason for him to be doing this is self-aggrandizement.

Also too: Detroit looks pretty at night from the air.

Hubs was in Detroit last winter to restore power after an winter/ice storm and it was after sunset and his crew still had work tickets. An Detroit cop pulled up and asked what the hell they thought they were doing being in “that neighborhood” after dark (every other house was empty and forlorn) and they should leave “right now”.
Hubs said, “We’re here to turn the lights back on.”
And they stayed there until almost midnight.
People who lived there were on their porches, sidewalks and on the street cheering that the power trucks had shown up. They brought out sandwiches and water…and when the lights came back on, there were many MANY handshakes, hugs and thank yous.
Detroit is what you make of it.

Please notice that I didn’t mention the racial makeup of anyone in this anecdote because it doesn’t make one whit of a difference.

63 uncah91  Mon, Jul 1, 2013 7:07:12pm

Seriously, what really gets me about trying to compare racial slurs, is that it ignores the power imbalance. There are places, times, situations in the U.S. where it would be genuinely scary or debasing to be called “cracker”, but they are few and far between. Most of the time it’s going to be laughable.

Want to rile a white person up, you are going to have to call me something more specific. Redneck would work, but only for some people. You are going to have identify me as a powerless, undesirable minority. Cracker doesn’t do that. It says I’m white, and that’s about it.

If you were, say, in Compton, and an agitated group of men approached you and called you a cracker, you might be justified in feeling some alarm, and helplessness. The power dynamic would be reversed.

This was a possible daily experience for black people through much of the nation’s history.

Sad news for fans of 007:

Pierce Brosnan devastated after daughter Charlotte, 42, loses battle with ovarian cancer

Actor Pierce Brosnan is devastated after his daughter Charlotte died, aged just 42.

The mother-of-two died after a three year battle with ovarian cancer - the same disease which killed her mother Cassandra 22 years ago - at her London home on Friday.

Pierce, who has been filming a spy thriller, November Man, in Eastern Europe, last night said: ‘On June 28 my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life, having succumbed to ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her husband Alex, children Isabella and Lucas and brothers Christopher and Sean.

‘Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl.

‘We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon. We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences.’

Charlotte, who was adopted by the Irish actor in 1986 when her biological father Dermot Harris died, leaves behind her husband, artist Alex Smith and children Isabella, 15, and Lucas, eight.

She is survived by her brothers Christopher, Sean, Dylan and Paris.

You’re talking about the Democrats.

To be perfectly honest, for most people, when you talk about folks on a “mission from God” and then make comparisons to the number of guns they have, Democrats are not the first party that comes to mind.

Even in Texas.

Thing is that we were talking about the Democrats down there. There’s a good number of folks down there who don’t want SB5 to pass, but also like guns a great deal.

Yes, but unlike the Muslim Brotherhood, the Texas Dems are less inclined to use their guns to make a point.

Right now, they’re focusing on keeping people motivated to keep fighting SB5, and getting folks deputized so they can register voters.

Wendy Davis is the target of huge outpouring of hate from the “Patriot” right, and theocons everywhere.

Noticeable is that the actual bill, SB5, is not even discussed. The haters just don’t want to go through the elements of the bill one by one. All they know (and repeat from elsewhere) is that Wendy Davis wants “infanticide”. Ignored are all the other consequences of SB5. They totally ignore the impacts on abortions before the 20th week.

American Way of Birth, Costliest in the World

Seven months pregnant, at a time when most expectant couples are stockpiling diapers and choosing car seats, Renée Martin was struggling with bigger purchases.
At a prenatal class in March, she was told about epidural anesthesia and was given the option of using a birthing tub during labor. To each offer, she had one gnawing question: “How much is that going to cost?”

Though Ms. Martin, 31, and her husband, Mark Willett, are both professionals with health insurance, her current policy does not cover maternity care. So the couple had to approach the nine months that led to the birth of their daughter in May like an extended shopping trip though the American health care bazaar, sorting through an array of maternity services that most often have no clear price and — with no insurer to haggle on their behalf — trying to negotiate discounts from hospitals and doctors.

When she became pregnant, Ms. Martin called her local hospital inquiring about the price of maternity care; the finance office at first said it did not know, and then gave her a range of $4,000 to $45,000. “It was unreal,” Ms. Martin said. “I was like, How could you not know this? You’re a hospital.”

I don’t know, but it seems the theocrats in TX are bound determined to teach Wendy Davis a lesson. That hard push now is to label Davis as a proponent of “infanticide” so expect to see that claim more and more. She’ll probably be redistricted out of a political career.

A fairly standard point, accepted by many rational people, is when the child is viable outside the mother’s womb…but there is no arguing that point with the Theocrats. For them, it is at conception, regardless of whether that conception was the result of rape or incest, it was all an Act of God.

Remember, we cannot argue with these people, we can only hope to limit the amount of damage they can do.

I don’t like abortion either, but the best way to reduce abortion is to help mothers find ways to keep and raise their children: more maternity leave, lower chilldbearing and childrearing costs, etc.

The Fundamentalist approach is to protect the “sancitiy of life” in the womb and then drop it entirely when the kid pops out.

There are a lot of conwservative principles that I agree with, but the way they go about implementing them is another matter.

if we expect young people to take responsibilities for their actions and their reproductive systems, we need to give them all the information they need to make decisions, not just scare them and shame them into submission.

And I am all for self-reliance and individual initiative. But we cannot expect individuals and families with limited incomes and resources to negotiate on an equal level with multi-billion-dollar international corporations without some sort of intermediary in the form of a union or government.

And I see the Free Market not as an idology, but as a mechanism for helping to bring together supply and demand and to direct flows of capital to where they do the most benefit.

And a market needs an infrastructure - both a physical and a legal/regulatory one - to ensure that it works for the benefit of all participants.

re: #253 EdDantes

It’s not really well defined medically, but I’d say not until after the fetus’ brain develops enough to integrated the sensory it is given. “Viability” these days starts around 27 weeks, so I’ve read, and that would be the hard transition. So somewhere between 22 and 27 weeks. Even then I’m not sure I’d call it “infanticide” until later in the pregnancy.

Big news in town.
Milwaukee documents show church was slow to act on abusive priests

Pages and pages of paperwork documenting clergy sex abuse in the Milwaukee archdiocese were released Monday afternoon, providing insight to priest abuse cases over the years as well as New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s request to move church assets to protect them from a bankruptcy filing before he left Milwaukee in 2009.
Jeff Anderson, a lawyer representing the victims of clergy sex abuse in the archdiocese, said in a news conference Monday that the newly released documents show that decisions were made to move $147 million to a fund for cemetery maintenance and to parishes under Dolan, then archbishop of Milwaukee. Anderson said the Vatican acted with unprecedented speed to approve the transfer of the money.

Anderson said the request to move the money was made in a June 4, 2007, letter to the Vatican and was approved July 18, 2007.

Anderson compared the speed of the money transfer to the years it took to act on abusive priests. Specifically, he said, Fr. John Wagner was accused of abusing 10 minors, and though he admitted some of the misconduct, he remained a priest for more than seven years after the allegations were made.

Okay, we’re into self-parody at this point.

Talking on a Fox show to all those Obama-haters! Goodness. So Greenwald must be a front man for Hannity.

Its simple logic.

Please, I surrender. The stupid coming from LGF with this witless anti-greenwald campaign has me in stitches. When’s Johnson coming back from mental vacation? It looks like the teens who were supposed to feed the cats have thrown all the furniture out in the back yard and started a bonfire in the middle of the living room with all your old Jazz magazines. Time to call in the industrial cleaners.

269 Justanotherhuman  Tue, Jul 2, 2013 3:11:13am

re: #260 Sol Berdinowitz

I agree with what you’re saying.

But somehow, greed and narcissism, while not taking over completely, have gotten in the way far too much in the market place, and the ideology itself resides in the current political atmosphere which supports it even with these terrible flaws, to the point that it has deteriorated into the racism, sexism and reactionary views we continue to see today. Along with the rise of “personal” redemption in the form of evangelical dominionist theology which covers all those bases, too, what it all boils down to is hucksterism for suckers born every minute, whether it’s religion, politics, or the latest Apple product which people camp out to get first.

Money alone has become the currency of power, even among the god-botherers who herd many of the sheeple, whether in the libertarianism of billionaires like the Koch Bros who tolerate them, to the kooks who allow it to seep into their business style, like Chick-fil-A, to the multi-national corps which no longer have an allegiance to any nation or people, just to bloating themselves with excessive profits with the cheapest labor they can find and cutting corners on safety and worker welfare. The CEOs who live like kings of their own domain who will use anything to push their own agenda.

Too many people confuse the ability to make money with actual thinking and with freedom itself. Cheating, lying, and stealing are not new to making money and have been around since the dawn of our existence. Being fair and paying your employees a decent, living wage, being honest with the public, and supporting a robust middle class which is healthy and lives above a subsistence level that allows them to “stop and smell the roses”, so to speak, seems to have risen to a new level of wealth inequality as different segments of society fight over the crumbs. Pride in one’s labor, education, and knowledge can no longer surmount the nagging fear that a person is just another cog in the wheel—we are supposed to “take what we can get” not what we deserve for that which we have prepared and for our own abilities.

None of it is a pretty sight in any country, esp in one which holds the promise of equality for all, not just the few.

re: #267 Cresttwo

The point, which you have apparently missed, is the ostensibly left-wing/libertarian Greenwald appearing on a noticeably right-wing TV “news” program. The only politics they share is disdain for the sitting US president, and that’s what Charles is pointing out.

There was a time back in the days of national economies and import restrictions that funneling money back into corporations meant that they could invest more in the domestic economy and job market.

But nowadays, capital is free to flow wherever it brings the highest rate of return, which means cheap consumer goods from abroad and sub-minimum wage jobs stocking the stuff for Americans.

I don’t like abortion either, but the best way to reduce abortion is to help mothers find ways to keep and raise their children: more maternity leave, lower chilldbearing and childrearing costs, etc. women avoid getting pregnant in the first place.

User failure is especially a problem with abstinence. We *know* that. Humans are terrible at abstinence, especially when alcohol is available.

At least birth control pills, IUDs, and implants (and reversible vasectomies!) can be utilized while sober and alert, well ahead of any temptation.

Watching an episode of “Blackadder” with Rowan Atkinson and Hugh laurie, talking about the causes of WWI, the Hugh laurie character cites “Germany’s colonial ambitions” as one.

To which Blackadder replies, “Britain has an empire that covers a qharter of the globe. The German empire consists of a small sausage factory in Tanganyika.”

Now a lot of residents of former Imperial possessions have come home to roost in the UK, and brought their Gentoo and Musselmanic religions with them.

Fair play, I say…

A person capable of seeing clear to an exception for rape or incest is someone capable of reasoning and seeing morality as gradations on a scale and legislation as a human endeavor.

But the fundamentalists see and think in moral absolutes, there is no arguing with them, we can only hope to limit the damage they can do to us…

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Some parts are cleaning up after yesterday’s storms, which not only caused local flooding, but a tornado touched down across 3 towns in NJ, and straight line winds or microbursts or a tornado caused damage in CT and NY. Pretty wild weather that caused cancellation of local fireworks displays, but thankfully no one was injured in any of the wild weather.

Today’s forecast is putting the bad weather further inland - meaning that parts of central NY, Catskills, and western NJ and Eastern PA are under the gun - along with ongoing flooding concerns that have brought disaster declarations once again.

Oh, and the hot weather persists out West.

Meanwhile, events in Egypt are progressing rapidly, and Morsi’s running out of options to remain in power. His best chance is to call for early elections, allow himself to stay on as a caretaker government, and hope that the MB and Islamists can organize better than reformers and moderates to hold on power.

For the moderates in Egypt, they’ve got to do more than demand change. They’ve got to organize better to deliver on the promises - starting first with a GOTV that delivers the Parliament and presidency into reformer hands. Then, they’ve got to make sure that they put someone experienced in charge of trying to turn around the economy. It wont be easy, and it wont happen overnight, but starting with clearing out long time corruption needs to be a priority.

That’s key to stabilizing the sociopolitical situation there. But perhaps just as important is revising the constitution to make sure that the military is truly subservient and answerable to the civilian government.

That’s a far harder task, especially when you see that Egypt’s modern history is determined by the army’s allegiances - Nasser to Sadat to Mubarak to the Morsi regime. All were the result of coups, juntas, or failing relationships with the military leadership.

Now, they’re signalling that they are dissatisfied with Morsi, and the protests grow knowing that the military is not going to crack down on behalf of Morsi.

Meanwhile, in just a short time, millions of pilgrims will descend on Saudi Arabia to join in the Hajj. That’s even as the country is struggling to assess the severity of a new disease outbreak that could make SARS look like the common cold: MERS. With modern travel allowing people to sweep around the world in hours, pilgrims could unwittingly return home and spread this disease to the far corners of the planet and that’s got epidemiologists and public health specialists worried. A lot.

This fall, millions of devout Muslims will descend upon Mecca, Medina, and Saudi Arabia’s holy sites in one of the largest annual migrations in human history. In 2012, approximately 6 million pilgrims came through Saudi Arabia to perform the rituals associated with umrah, and this number is predicted to rise in 2013. Umrah literally means “to visit a populated place,” and it’s the very proximity that has health officials so worried. In Mecca alone, millions of pilgrims will fulfill the religious obligation of circling the Kaaba. And having a large group of people together in a single, fairly confined space threatens to turn the holiest site in Islam into a massive petri dish.

The disease is still mysterious. Little is understood about how it is transmitted and even less regarding its origins. But we do know that MERS is deadly, with a mortality rate of about 55 percent — a remarkably higher lethality than that posed by its close cousin, the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus, which in 2003 terrified travelers across the globe but posed a fatality rate of only 9.6 percent. The MERS coronavirus is new to our species, so mild and asymptomatic infections seem to be rare, but the human immune response to infection is itself so extreme that it can prove deadly in some cases.

Like SARS, the MERS virus spreads between people via close contact, shared medical instruments, and coughing. Once inside the human lung, the MERS virus sparks a series of reactions that all but destroy normal lung function. Patients can descend into pneumonia so severe that they require machine-assisted breathing to stay alive, in as little as 12 days. Unlike SARS, the MERS virus is also capable of attacking the kidneys and can be passed on to others via exposure to contaminated urine. And for some of those who survive acute MERS, years of rehabilitation may be necessary, just like for some of the 2003 SARS victims.

And like back in 2003, when health officials worried about airplane travelers in confined spaces transmitting the virus across the globe, the hajj poses a unique risk of transmission, one that could catapult this still-small outbreak into a full-fledged pandemic. Containment will become nearly impossible as millions of pilgrims flock from virtually every country on the globe to the kingdom during the holy month. Indeed, MERS has already crossed continents; two suspected cases were reported in France as recently as June 12, and confirmed cases have been reported in Germany and Britain. The first patient in each of these cases had traveled in the Middle East before reaching his/her home destination, only then to be diagnosed with MERS.

MERS is a new and novel disease, but it’s hardly the only one experts are worried about. Saudi officials are also seriously concerned about the spread of polio, which while not natively present in the country, could be imported from those few remaining countries that have ongoing outbreaks. That could result in a spike of new cases in places that have eradicated the disease - and vaccination in these remaining places is tough because of a number of anti-vax rumors and conspiracies that run rampant.

re: #370 Gus

There are two schools of thought on this. The simplest way is to just use ‘an’ in front of any word that starts with a vowel.

But the actual origination of an comes from using ‘a’ with words that started with an ‘n’. So, ‘orange’ used to be ‘norange’. The ‘n’ get moved over to the ‘a’ after awhile. So, some weirdos (like me) try to only use ‘an’ when it connects to one of those words. Asshole isn’t one of them, and if you say it out loud it actually sounds more appropriate to say ‘a asshole’. To me.

I am conflicted on this. Generally, I am opposed to abortion. My personal exceptions are rape, incest and the life of the mother. Modern medical care today allows viability outside the womb to extend to babies who would have died a few decades ago. I’m certainly not a theocrat but I do not take abortion lightly.

And that is an opinion you are welcome to have, and to have discussions concerning it with a woman who you impregnate. You cannot, however, be involved in any decision that I have with the man who might impregnate me. And this is where the wheat meets the chaff. I do not tell you that you cannot watch porn. I am offended by people who engage in risky behavior, but I am not telling you to not skydive. I am offended by people who have no sense of humor but I am not telling you that you must go to reeducation camps to learn how to smile.

And what is worse than having someone else determine my financial future, is that those same people who want to force me to give birth, want to take away all of the help I might need before and after I spit that baby out. Who is going to pay the thousands of dollars to provide prenatal care and delivery medical charges? Who is going to help me feed that baby? Who is going to ensure that I have a job after I am recuperating from giving birth? What if something goes wrong with my body and I need healthcare after the fact? Who is going to pay for that?

As far as adoption, why do I have to become an incubator for someone else to raise the child I have been forced to give birth to? That only indicates to me that my only worth is that of a baby machine.

I am sorry, but if you have opinions concerning the body of someone you are not involved with…why should that matter? If you are not intimately involved with my vagina, you cannot determine how and what it does or does not do.

Oh it’s not censorship. But in this case it is a measure of pussydom and cowardice.

The thing is, you’re not making anything like a substantial critique. If you bothered to take your time and write out a long post about why you think the Snowden affair is a very important 4th amendment matter, it wouldn’t get downdinged, and it wouldn’t get deleted, and you wouldn’t get banned for it.

So why not do that? Sparing the personal invective and the accusations of hive-mindedness, why not make your case rationally with as much conviction and persuasion as you can muster?

And that is an opinion you are welcome to have, and to have discussions concerning it with a woman who you impregnate.

Thanks, Joanne. I would like to add that EdDantes should refrain from publishing his moralizing opinions until he has done some research. Only 1.6% of abortions are performed after 20 weeks, and the vast majority are due to severe health complications of the fetus or the mother. Wendy Davis detailed scores of women’s personal stories in her filibuster last week, some of which detailed late-term experiences. Ed should watch the video and inform himself.

A member of my family chose to carry a dead fetus rather than abort. Months later, the miscarriage almost killed her, and she can no longer have any children. For most late-term abortions, the decision is not made lightly, and it is usually heartbreaking for the parents.

Ed, the way that you stated your opinions truly shows a lack of knowledge about the subject, and a failure to separate fact from your own personal theocratic beliefs. Neither you, nor anyone else, has the right to tell me what to do with my uterus. Full stop.

re: #454 Dr. Matt

The slave trade was driven by Southern Conservatives. True story.

That’s overly simplistic.
Rum and Revolution, Smuggling and Trade, Boston and the Caribbean

Because of the Tea Party, tea is the drink most associated with the War of Independence. Rum, though, deserves equal billing.
Article subheadings include:
Slaves from Africa to Work on Sugar Plantations
From Barbados to Boston with Molasses
From Boston to Africa with Rum
Tax or Duty on Imported Molasses
Rampant Smuggling

Over the years, Americans didn’t object to these laws because they were so badly enforced. Through bribes and other means, Americans merchants dodged the duties. Smuggling was rampant.

Then, in the early 1760s, Britain became especially desperate for more tax revenue in the wake of a costly war with France. Authorities tightened enforcement against smuggling. Merchants, especially those in Boston, howled. They weren’t calling for independence. They just wanted a return to the of days of lax enforcement and unfettered smuggling. But their protests ignited awareness, fostered political organization, and promoted outrage that led step by step to independence, which was finally declared in 1776.

Yes, these are people who are opposed to public schooling. Freedom!

The thing is, most teachers in America are not represented, for collective bargaining purposes, by unions. They may belong to professional organizations, like the NEA, which have none of the bargaining powers associated with labor unions. Teacher unions in big cities, like NYC, are the exception, not the rule.

Private and religious school teachers have never had union representation. So, I guess this is how I missed out on getting my own personal child gofer.

According to Finnish legislation, it is not possible to leave an asylum application outside the Finnish territory.”
• France: No response yet.
• Germany: No response yet.

• India: Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said Tuesday that India will deny the request.
• Ireland: The Irish Justice Ministry declined to confirm whether it had received a request on Snowden’s behalf, but said Irish law requires that applicants reach the country’s borders before a request can be considered.
• Italy: The Italian Foreign Ministry said it received an asylum request by fax. The country accepts requests done in Italian territory or at the border, the ministry said.
• The Netherlands: No response yet.
• Nicaragua: No response yet.
• Norway: The country confirms the receipt of his request, but usually, asylum seekers must be in the country already to be allowed to apply. The Ministry of Justice is considering whether or not to process his application.
• Poland: Snowden’s request for asylum doesn’t fulfill requirements, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.
• Russia: Snowden has withdrawn his request for permission to stay in Russia, Kremlin spokesman Peskov said Tuesday, according to the news agency RIA Novosti.
• Spain: The country is not reviewing Snowden’s request because it must be made from within or on its borders, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
• Switzerland: No response yet.
• Venezuela: “We haven’t been asked for help, but when he asks, he will have an answer,” President Nicolas Maduro said Tuesday.

re: #570 Targetpractice

Hope he understands that, once he’s there, there’s no leaving. He can’t run back to the US when the locals get tired of him and without a passport there’s way for him to run to any of the countries he really wants to seek asylum in.

I have a feeling that he doesn’t quite get that. However, he is still a citizen of the USA, despite his revoked passport. He could come back, if he were willing to face the music.

re: #571 NJDhockeyfan

Usually, I am behind Amnesty Intl all the way, but on this matter, I don’t have a lot of sympathy for Snowden. It’s not a political issue he’s fleeing from, but a legal one.

And frankly, he’s a fool to think that the US cannot someday find him and bring him in, no matter where he is.

The kicker would be what happens if he leaves the transit terminal and does *not* get to an embassy. Then he’d be arrested for illegally being in Russia and pretty much at their mercy. And their obvious solution, since he is a US citizen, would be to toss him on a plane and deport him to the US.

Snowden is really asking for some white boy privilege, IMHO.

Can you imagine if he wasn’t pretty much a con man, and BAH wasn’t so slack on investigating his background, that he would have even been within a mile of the NSA? We don’t even know if his stated background is even legit—has the govt even commented on it?

And can you imagine the uproar if he had been anyone other than who he is who had wormed his way into that job and acted outside of his designated scope of employment?

Any wrong answer results in getting the test wrong - and making you ineligible to vote.

Wonderful system they had there. And many of the states that had poll tests are jumping to enact new restrictions that while not as awful as the poll tests, would restrict access to polls and cause undue hardship (all in the name of voter fraud).

re: #610 darthstar

Media coverage of trials, versus what goes on that the jurors actually see are completely different animals.

The defense team’s opening statement got off on the wrong foot with the knock knock joke, but it isn’t fatal to the case. Remember, all the defense has to do is raise reasonable doubt. That’s it, even though the defense attorney appears to have no rapport with the jury after the opening fiasco.

So far, have they done that - and more to the point, has the prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Zimmerman killed Martin under the charges of murder 2?

We’re still a bit away from handing this off to the jury, but when it does go to the jury, they’ll be looking at (jury instructions).

To prove the crime of Second Degree Murder, the State must prove the following three elements beyond a reasonable doubt:

1. (Victim) is dead.

2. The death was caused by the criminal act of (defendant).

3. There was an unlawful killing of (victim) by an act imminently dangerous to another and demonstrating a depraved mind without regard for human life.

Definitions.
An “act” includes a series of related actions arising from and performed pursuant to a single design or purpose.

An act is “imminently dangerous to another and demonstrating a depraved mind” if it is an act or series of acts that:

1. a person of ordinary judgment would know is reasonably certain to kill or do serious bodily injury to another, and

2. is done from ill will, hatred, spite, or an evil intent, and

3. is of such a nature that the act itself indicates an indifference to human life.

In order to convict of Second Degree Murder, it is not necessary for the State to prove the defendant had an intent to cause death.

Lesser Included Offenses

They’ll then look at the issue of reasonable doubt and defenses.

Heh. That’s the point. Questions that are incomprehensible, may have multiple or no correct answer, or the answer is up to the judgment of the administrator.

They did their best to obfuscate the language and as far away from cultural norms as possible.

Exclusive: Egypt army plan would scrap constitution, parliament - sources

The sources said the military intended to install an interim council, composed mainly of civilians from different political groups and experienced technocrats, to run the country until an amended constitution was drafted within months.

That would be followed by a new presidential election, but parliamentary polls would be delayed until strict conditions for selecting candidates were in force, they said.

Not good. At all. And likely to intensify as the deadline approaches, even though Morsi’s so far said he wouldn’t knuckle under the military’s demands.

BTW, the fact that the military’s essentially calling the shots in this crisis tells you where the center of power is - and it isn’t in the presidency or the parliament. It’s the military, as it has been for decades.

It was the military shifting support away from Mubarak that finally ended his regime (just as the military backed him after Sadat was assassinated that led him to take and keep power).

Defense couldn’t call witness, State is trying to argue that the recall of events featured in the friend’s book differ significantly from versions that he gave to cops.

Defense does succeed in getting his friend to admit that A) book was written months after conversations and B) no notes were taken during said conversations.

I only hear the soundbites, so I don’t know shit.

That’s right, the radio talk show host who has repeatedly blamed gays and lesbians for North Korea’s nuclear threats, referred to gay rights laws as “spiritual sodomy” and warned that Rachel Maddow viewers will orchestrate an anti-Christian holocaust is upset about the lack of “intelligent discussion in public” on LGBT issues.

well in their “defense” they were just recently elected. Now if they had stated that they were going to hold new elections or referendums, but yeah, they’re striding into Kevin Bacon’s “All is Well!!!!” territory here

I think it’s also lucky that they haven’t had much time to set up private militias and arm themselves.

Do not even try those arguments on them, the second a sperm meets an egg, God’s miracle has taken place and it is a Mortal Sin to interfere with its development.

There is no reasoning or compromising with people who claim a monopoly on the Divine Truth. We can only hope to limit the amount of damage they can do and reverse what they have accomplished already.

Youtube Video

Amazing video showing today’s failed Russian rocket launch.

Things of note. It appears that the range safety officer didn’t trigger the safeties - the rocket came apart and blew up after hitting the ground, even though it was quickly apparent that the rocket was not behaving properly - it was rocking over, and another video clearly shows one of the engines not firing properly.

This launch failure will have repercussions for the Russian commercial satellite business, since this is another failure among its launches in the past few years. It doesn’t appear to be an issue with the manned launches that rely on a different engine configuration.

and that’s why “progressives” think that this “pro-life” stuff is utter bullshit. In the Venn Diagram of what constitutes “pro-life” groups, you don’t see much intersection with the forced birthers and the anti-death penalty and anti-war groups. I may not agree with those folks (anti-DP, anti-war) but I understand their convictions. The forced birthers are just scared people who don’t understand sexuality, don’t see women as having rights over their own bodies and are looking for some misguided cause to wrap their own purity issues around. You don’t see these asshats doing anything for all of the abused and neglected kids we already have.

Dude, I want everyone to live long and prosper.
Sheesh.

My reaction was “hey, just because some of us take a long enough view that our dreams are of a future that will outlive us all…”

Come to think of it, a lot of these right-wing positions make much more sense in the context of a gibbering fear of your own mortality, too terrified to even conceive of a world that goes on without you in it, desperately hungry for a sense of certainty that your personal point of view is the Objective Truth…

Okay, fine, it’s probably a point that someone’s already done to death. But hey, if I didn’t reinvent the wheel every once in a while, where would I be? :)
