Bad Craziness Watch: NC Senate Tacks Sweeping Abortion Legislation Onto Sharia Law Bill

A disturbing convergence of backward bigotry
US News • Views: 22,212

Tonight in North Carolina, the insane Muslim-hating movement converged with the insane anti-women’s rights movement, and … Senate Tacks Sweeping Abortion Legislation Onto Sharia Law Bill.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Senators tacked a suite of new restrictions and regulations pertaining to abortion clinics onto a bill dealing with the application of foreign laws in North Carolina family courts Tuesday.

The measure was unveiled unexpectedly during an unusual late-day committee meeting Tuesday. It combines several bills in different stages of the legislative process into one omnibus measure.

“It just took a while for there to be a consensus of support for it within our caucus,” said Sen. Buck Newton, R-Wilson, the chairman of the Judiciary 1 committee. “Sometimes these things come together at the last minute.”

Repost of what I wrote downstairs:

Wham, Bam, Sonogram! Meet the Ladies Setting the New Pro-Life Agenda

Understated rhetoric aside, AUL’s mission is to end all abortions in the United States. Founded in 1971 by a Unitarian minister from Harvard Divinity School, AUL first focused on reversing Roe v. Wade flat out, but in the 1990s it turned its attention to rolling back reproductive rights incrementally at the state level. Lately, it’s been chipping away at abortion access at an ever-faster pace. Its team of lawyers has written dozens of model bills, which are collected in a playbook, Defending Life, and delivered to every state and federal legislator.

AUL = “Americans United for Life.” It’s like the ALEC of forced birth.

They’re anti-Sharia because they want a Christian theocracy.

Gov. Pat Quinn (Jackass, IL) tries to rewrite concealed carry bill.

I truly hope the Republicans show Quinn the door next year. He’s not a crook, but he’s an anti-gun liberal I’ll be glad to see the back of.

PS: While Quinn’s action anger me, other than the preemption provision they don’t effect me directly, since I don’t see myself ever owning a handgun.

Yeah, and then they can pass a bunch of laws to make abortions illegal, cut services and generally fuck over as many people as possible to keep their donors happy.

That would be a hoot.

I partially agree with 5, but would want the clip size to be more in line with Colorado’s ammo law. Say, 15 rounds?

Churches and the workplace should be OK, as should most restaurants, unless that specific restaurant says no. Bars were already a ‘no’ under the proposed law, and reasonably so.

Preemption is needed for concealed carry, to keep someone from getting in trouble for a magazine ban they didn’t know was there.

If someone thinks they need a gun in church, it’s time to find a new church.

Same goes for their job, unless they’re in law enforcement or the military.

And if they need to have a gun on them when they go out to dinner, I seriously have to question their life choices.

Yeah, that’d be a no. I don’t want a bunch of armed civilians around me when I’m at work. We’ve seen what can happen when an active shooter is firing and armed civilians try to play the hero. One guy almost shot an innocent man during the Giffords assassination attempt.

35 dragonath  Tue, Jul 2, 2013 8:16:13pm

re: #15 Dark_Falcon

Bars were already a ‘no’ under the proposed law, and reasonably so.

What’s this then?

Alcohol: HB 183 allows people to carry guns into establishments serving alcohol, including most family restaurants and other places where large amounts of alcohol are consumed. Mixing alcohol with guns is irresponsible and dangerous. Illinois must keep guns out of any establishment where alcohol is consumed.

And it’s also repeated here.

The new bill’s Senate sponsor, Sen. Gary Forby, D-Benton, said carrying guns would be prohibited in “a ton” of places. They include schools, child-care facilities, playgrounds, public parks, amusement parks, airports, libraries, hospitals and on public transit.

Senate Democrats strenuously objected, but carrying would be allowed in bars and restaurants, if the establishment’s alcohol sales don’t exceed 50 percent of the establishment’s gross receipts.

Chicago Democrats got all of what they requested in terms of specific gun-free zones, including mass transit buses and trains, schools, other government buildings, parks, hospitals and street festivals.

But Rep. Brandon Phelps, a southern Illinois Democrat who sponsored the House proposal, was able to keep in that automobiles should be a “safe harbor,” meaning a secured gun could be kept in a car, even if it’s parked in a prohibited place.

I have to reiterate comments made already that if you need a gun with you in church or at work, then you’re in need of a serious reassessment of your life choices. And businesses such as restaurants should not have to be put in the position of choosing whether or not to deny patrons the ability to carry weapons in order to safeguard others and thus suffer the resulting stigma of being seen as “wimps” or “denying people their rights.”

And there you go. The ‘safe harbor’ provision doesn’t prevent someone from prohibiting guns within their building, but it does allow permit holders to store a gun in their car. I’ll be honest, I’ve never seen the need for it. I’ve been “assured” on more than one occasion that there are millions saved every year by the defense use of firearms, but the analyses of the cited studies have amounted to wild-assed guessing.

Meanwhile, I don’t think I’ve ever gone a week without a shooting being reported either in the local paper or local news stations. And I don’t begin to believe that every single of one of them was with an illegal firearm.

57 Gus  Tue, Jul 2, 2013 8:28:12pm

Cucci, or rather Jackson, was the subject of a political phone call I received at work Monday. Seems the local party bosses are unhappy with our district’s representative, Scott Rigell, for publicly stating he would not support Jackson’s nomination for Lt. Gov. The subject of the call was to tell us, the loyal voters of the district, to call him up and give him hell for not supporting a fellow bigot in the name of party solidarity.

Really, you’re now linking to guns.com? Why not just hook us up straight to the NRA’s site?

Workplaces need more guns in civilian hands? Most workplaces are stress filled environments where there are frequent, often intense, disagreements among workers, management, customers, etc. And an everyday aspect of this environment includes resentment over wages, salaries, assignments, promotions or lack thereof, layoffs, disciplinary actions and of course firings. Do more guns in such a place really make sense? How comfortable would you feel about firing an employee if you knew he kept a gun in his desk? Before answering, keep in mind that most shootings are spur of the moment, heat of passion acts.

If your best defense of a source is “it’s not as bad as the NRA”, maybe it’s time to quit digging that hole. Not surprisingly, you ignore the substance of my argument. Do you really think it’s a good idea to allow civilians to carry an unlimited amount of guns and ammo pretty much everywhere? Including the workplace? Late but I need to respond:
Considering the attacks on liberal churches by far right nuts (see the Knoxville TN Unitarian church for example) one can want to defend one’s church rather than be forced to leave it by haters.
