One Woman Sarcastically Says “Hail Satan,” Entire Right Wing Goes Into Crazy Freak-Out Mode

There’s something seriously wrong with the right
Wingnuts • Views: 37,632

Thanks to Texas State Republican Rep. Scott Sanford’s moronic tweets claiming that pro-choice demonstrators were chanting “Hail Satan!” yesterday at the Texas legislature, conservatives all over the US are in a frenzy of religious fanaticism today.

Folks, this is the 21st century, but you sure wouldn’t know it from the way these people are reacting. The #HailSatan hashtag is now trending on Twitter, and here’s a small sample of the sheer insanity pouring out of the anti-choice religious right. Some of them actually believe the #HailSatan hashtag is going to summon the Dark Lord to bring about the End of Days.

These people are, not to put too fine a point on it, nuts.

(For the record, this whole thing apparently started when one demonstrator sarcastically said “Hail Satan” to an anti-choice kook, who filmed it and spread it to the usual sources, falsely claiming that the whole crowd was “chanting” the phrase. In other words, a perfectly typical right wing fake outrage, with extra Satanic seasoning.)

Is it the 80s? I remember this happening in the 80s. Everyone was convinced there were tons of Satanists like murdering and molesting kids and then suddenly everyone realized that, shit, it’s pretty easy to get kids to agree stuff happened when you ask them leading questions.

Let’s not do that again.

I’m pretty disappointed in Mother Jones. Drum has sort of always been a concern troll, but that publication used to have higher standards of investigation. (Much better than most MSM outlets.) That kind of fact-free speculation, combined with an almost overtly racist headline, is something I wouldn’t have expected from MJ, even though they employ Kevin Drum.

Just another casualty to the philosophy of “I will debase myself to prove that I’m not an Obamabot.”

A) Satan is far more accepting and tolerant vis-a-vis gays and other religions.

B) Satan doesn’t care about what you do in your bedroom.

C) Satan believes that women should control their own bodies and aren’t cursed just because they bleed once a month.

Kevin Drum realizes he stepped in it: Obama Lets Loose on Evo Morales | Mother Jones

UPDATE: The original headline of this post was “Obama Finally Shows His Chicago Thug Side for Real.” This was obviously a nod to the endless tea party invocations of Obama as a Chicago thug, but it’s been taken by many as a racial dog whistle. I apologize for that, since it certainly wasn’t my intent. I think the treatment of Morales’s plane was outrageous behavior, and quite likely a result of pressure from the United States, but that’s all.

NC Lawmaker: GOP is scarier than Sharia

“The irony that you all attached these anti-abortion provisions on the anti-Sharia law is really astounding,” Stein pointed out. “That’s what this bill says, it’s about some foreign law, anti-Sharia law. There’s not a single instance of anything like that appearing in the North Carolina courts. And yet, you’re playing to people’s base fears by promoting this.

“When we don’t have anything to fear from the Sharia types, what we have to fear is from the North Carolina General Assembly Republican Senate impinging on people’s fundamental constitutional rights.”

Now why in the world would anyone suspect Bolivian president Morales of smuggling someone aboard his private jet?

Spotlight on Bolivia: The “Coca Diplomacy” of Evo Morales

At last month’s meeting of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Bolivian President Evo Morales made headlines by dramatically brandishing a coca leaf he had apparently smuggled into the Austrian city between the pages of a book. The coca leaf, which is the unrefined source of cocaine and is considered an illegal substance under the UN’s 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, holds special significance for the Bolivian leader. A former cultivator of the plant himself, Morales swept into the presidency in 2006 with the backing of Bolivia’s cocaleros movement, a syndicate of coca-growers unions Morales has helmed for decades.

You know, I haven’t seen any proposed State or Federal Legislation regarding Catholic Canon Law, only Sharia Law. Have you?

Ojeda is accused in a seven-count complaint of molesting a girl who was younger than 14 while he worked at parishes in Woodland and Redding.

On Tuesday, the prosecution’s expert witness in canonical law said Nondorf and Sheehan were acting in “external” and not spiritual capacities when they confronted Ojeda two years ago about the sexual abuse allegations that had been made against him. “The topic is not the priest’s spiritual life, but information that would have come to the bishop … and his responsibilities to act and report it to the civil authorities,” the witness, Monsignor Steven Callahan, testified.

The conversation “had nothing to do with spiritual growth and development and everything to do with an allegation brought to diocesan authorities that they needed to take action on,” said Callahan, who is vicar general of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego.

The testimony came in the third day of the pretrial hearing on a motion by Ortiz to suppress Ojeda’s statements to Nondorf and Sheehan on Nov. 30, 2011, when they visited him in Redding with the purpose of bringing him back to Sacramento to face charges.

Banking on the idea that even if you and your spouse wanted the abortion and made that decision for yourselves, the doctor can still be sued by an uninvolved third party.

The objective is to make medical professionals too scared of legal consequences to perform the procedure.

“So to the Republican claim that “there is no war on women” I would have to call BS. But I would also add that the “war on women” is about a lot more than a war on women. Controlling the sexual practices of the entire population was certainly on Rick Santorum’s mind during his primary run in 2012. In fact I found his comments (see above link) to be well in line with the Catholic thinking I mentioned at the beginning of this post: It’s a vital way to keep the masses in line…and not one they appear to have any intention of letting go of easily.”

I am seriously pissed off that this is still a fight.

When I was a kid there was a single mom who lived on our street. Her husband left her with two little kids and she had to work, which was not cool at the time. I used to babysit for her sometimes, even though my Mom didn’t “approve of her lifestyle”. She was obviously overwhelmed, trying to keep the house, the kids, the car and all the bills paid. So I would help her clean her house, do the dishes and laundry, that kind of stuff, when I babysat.

She died from a botched abortion. She had the nerve to date and and got pregnant. You should have heard the judgement and tongue wagging in our neighborhood. No compassion. I was 12 when it happened. Roe V Wade passed the next year. I cried for two weeks after this lady died. Her name was Danielle, Danny. She was pretty and nice to me. That was the event that turned me against religious people and their snotty Jesus Club bullshit. I was a kid, but I was smart enough to see what was what. My parent were in Amway for FFS, I had been raised in the whole evangelical mess. When Danny died, I wasn’t allowed to ever talk about her again. But I overheard the whispers and the nasty talk. I never knew what happened to her kids, the police took them away in a police car, her house was emptied out and that was that. This is what these fucking assholes want to see again.

247 lawhawk  Wed, Jul 3, 2013 12:26:08pm

Because they have no other conclusions that can be reached?

The idea that someone who opposes shutting down all the clinics because of the onerous and extreme measures that the proponents of the bill claim are necessary for womens’ health is somehow for back alley abortions, or is against womens’ safety ignore that the morbidity and mortality rates for women who are patients at clinics are far safer (13-15x more safe) than those who seek natural or c-section birthing. It’s far far safer than plastic surgery, and there’s none among the proponents looking to demand that all plastic surgeons have privileges at hospitals or that any location where plastic surgery occurs conform to requirements such as those these folks are hoping to impose on abortion clinics so they are forced to shutter if they can’t afford the cost to comply with the demands.

But, as everyone here knows, the retort is that it might be safer for the woman, but not the unborn (ignoring that their claims for safety are a cover for their true intention to force the clinics to close). The safety and well being of the women is not part of the calculus, because if it were, these same people would be demanding that health care improve for pregnant women so they don’t die in such large numbers or that plastic surgeons don’t have so many bad outcomes - death and disfigurements.

I read (or listened to) one science article or podcast (I can’t remember) that stated that girls are menstruating earlier. It is not unusual for white girls to start at 8.5 years. IIRC, different ethnicities begin earlier, some later.

This means their cognitive development is much different than what mine was.

So many 7 year olds are developmentally where I was at 11. If I understood the article correctly.

275 lawhawk  Wed, Jul 3, 2013 12:35:32pm

Wouldn’t it be something if Morsi were in an adjoining cell next to that of Mubarak. /

Seriously though, the events in Egypt today should be giving all Egyptians pause even as they celebrate. There was a constitution in place. There was a legitimately elected president and government. The military, sensing popular opinion opted to depose Morsi and basically undo the last year’s worth of events.

What can stop the military from doing that again after the new elections and government is formed?

For starters, it would take a more consensual government with a functioning majority and minority party represented. The Constitution needs to clearly delineate the roles for the three branches, and clearly indicate the role of the military is subservient to that of the civilian government. Put teeth to that requirement.

re: #257 FemNaziBitch

Steve, you are underestimating children.

I’ve met quite a few young ones who have been given scientifically correct knowledge appropriate to their developmental level, who have shown a better understanding of the issues than most adults.

I never underestimate children having had some myself. When my youngest was about 7 he was invited to a backyard party by a friend’s parent. However it was a ruse and as all these boys were happily playing in the pool, the mother had invited her Priest to the party. Well he was one of the young hip type Priests but the party was to give all the boys a sermon (by the way, you guessed it….this was in Texas). Anyway, the boys were pulled out of the pool and forced to listen to Jesus this and Jesus that. The Priest then asked each boy individually what they had learned and when he got to my son, son of Big Steve’s replied “Allah Akbar” and then ran and did a back flip into the pool as the other kids screamed with delight. Party mother decided it was time for Son of Big Steve’s to leave the party so she called. I came and got him and heard the whole story from the mother…with tinges of what a bad father I must be…..when she was done I told her I had never been more proud of my son than I was at that moment.

So this is what offends you about all this? Seriously? Maybe that outrage would serve a better purpose if you got behind the actual issue at hand. This isn’t even close to being about what signs a kid is carrying. I’m assuming there are women and girls in your life that you love and care for, I would think you’d be offended by self righteous assholes telling them they have no rights to decide about their own healthcare and family planning.

re: #246 Big Steve

I respectfully disagree. That girl looks like she is under 7 years old. I doubt she even knows what the sign means. She has a right to make her own mind up when she is old enough to understand the issues. I object to any kids being used as props in these or any demonstrations. I see this on both sides of the political spectrum and I believe it to be abhorrent regardless of the political issue.

I might disagree with you in most cases with involving children in demonstrations. However, in this instance, I just strongly disagree. That mother is fighting for the rights of her DAUGHTERS. That’s not using them as props. This is a serious fight with serious consequences for all women.

I don’t know how cognitive development relates to physical development, but I do know it sure changes how people treat you. They have a whole different set of expectations just because you look a little more mature.

One thing I expect if they get to another election is better opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood - their election was somewhat by default because they were the only party with real organization and reach at Mubarak’s fall. Since that time I’m hoping the other groups have gotten themselves more organized.

You may have missed the part where up above I mentioned that I worked on a campaign to unseat Rick Perry. I oppose everything that man is for. I am also more than passing acquaintances with one Texas House member and one Texas Senator. They have both heard from me on this issue.

Well, cognitive development like physical development is determined by hormones. The frontal lobes of the brain which allow higher thinking begin to develop at puberty. The parts of the brain that make it so easier for children to learn languages so quickly shut down.

Basically, the great benefit of the childhood brain is that it has tons and tons of neural connections that aren’t “programmed” yet. This is why children can learn so much so quickly. When puberty starts, the brain starts to weed-out the unused or seldom used programming-allowing resources to be allocated to programming necessary for the next phase of life.

It’s actually kind of a scary thing that puberty is moving to an earlier age.

(please allow a wide latitude for the lay-persons explanation of brain development —I have a feeling there are some Phd’s out there wanting to pound me)

And here we have the right-wing reminiscing about the good ol’ days of apartheid in South Africa:

Obama’s Visit to Hell

Just how repugnant does the Right have to get before it comes apart at the seams?

Just don’t mention to the right that South Africa has one of the highest Gini coefficients in the world. It might give people the idea that horrendous levels of wealth inequality breeds corruption and lawlessness and that we’d better do our darnedest to make sure that we work against exacerbating inequality in this country.

No, just keep repeating that raising taxes on rich people and expanding the welfare state are evil. Jesus said so.

It’s a fairly straightforward concept.

“Well, dear, you may want to be veterinarian, but if you fall in love and decide to have sex, you probably won’t be able to. if Rick Perry get’s his way.

You’ll have to become a nun if you want to achieve anything.”

Yeah, I think a 7 year old could understand that.

299 A Mom Anon  Wed, Jul 3, 2013 12:49:36pm

re: #290 Big Steve

Then you understand that those girls are going to be directly effected by this madness in the next few years? As a Dad, I’m sure you know how quick that time flies by. This DIRECTLY effects those kids, and while they may not yet understand this issue on an adult level, they have probably been told in age appropriate terms why their Mom is fighting for their future. I’m glad you fought against Perry and were involved in the political process in TX, fighting the good fight. But this issue isn’t going away, and TX seems to be leading, in a really BAD way, what’s going to be happening anywhere wingnuts can get away with it. Try to imagine, being a woman and having a bunch of ill informed men setting policy about your reproductive health and rights. Men have never had anyone doing this to them, EVER. The anti choice women in this mess aren’t the leaders, it was men who started this mess. There’s nothing wrong with involving kids in the political process in a non hateful way.

It goes for boys too!

Kids compare families. They know which ones work and which don’t.

I know it didn’t take more than 7 years to figure out that lots of kids is a recipe for dysfunction. (remember I grew-up in the Catholic bubble.)

Early on, I decided I wasn’t getting married or having kids. Then I grew-up a little and learned about science. I think I was 12 when I figured-out I could have everything I wanted in life—if I wasn’t Catholic.

What I love about this (even more than the fact that Satan is getting more mentions on twitter than god) is that it’s sooo over the top hyper-panicky that only the most gullible and deluded evangelicals will even believe it. What I don’t love about this is that the above group comprises about 29% of this nation.

Including my mother. She is utterly convinced that Obama is the actual Anti-Christ and will lead to the apocalypse in Revelations.

And she votes.

I’m sure that “hail satan” was just to mock those who were singing “amazing grace”, and that people are over-reacting to it. However, you are off-base when you insist that it was just one person, and not a group chant. There are multiple video accounts the say otherwise, e.g.
