Texas Republicans Send Women Back to the Dark Ages

Texas Republicans succeeded today in ramming through their regressive, backward, misogynistic anti-choice legislation.

The vote of 98-49 came after a full day of sometimes emotional debate. Before the measure can head to the state Senate, it needs a final vote from the House, which is expected on Wednesday.

The House approved the same proposal during a previous special session of the legislature, but it failed to pass in the Senate after Democratic Senator Wendy Davis staged an 11-hour filibuster that gained national attention.

Planned Parenthood, the country’s largest provider of abortions, says the proposed stricter standards for clinics could cause all but six of the 42 abortion facilities in Texas to shut down. Bill author Republican Jodie Laubenberg said no facility would be forced to close.

Laubenberg is simply lying. The entire purpose of the “stricter standards” is to force clinics to close, and everyone knows it. Including Laubenberg.

This is how Republicans deal with women who try to speak out against their caveman legislation:

If nothing else, I hope that this travesty has woken some people up to what the Republican party are really like in 2013.

These are not rational people. They are not intellectuals. They are not reasonable. They are fanatics that would run roughshod over women and everyone else to get what they want.

How much money is the state of Texas going to spend to defend this POS in the courts? Money they could spend on , I don’t know providing birth control for the poor or education.

Republicans used four armed representatives of Smaller Government to drag away one citizen taking her turn at the mike after waiting all day.

I almost wish I lived in Texas so I could join this fight. I’ll have to do what I can from here.

It’s all good. At least Rick Perry’s sister will get rich off this new state law.

I got into this with a supporter of the Texas (and North Carolina) TRAP law changes, and they admitted that this was all about closing clinics.

Texas has no problem attempting to ram this legislation through, but is twiddling its thumbs when it comes to improving public safety through regulating manufacturers who produce or use chemicals that have explosive characteristics - you know, like the West, Texas company that blew up a significant portion of that town.

Or, that they ignore the morbidity and mortality statistics that show that women seeking abortions have fewer bad outcomes than women who visit, say a plastic surgeon, or even women seeking natural childbirths. Yet, there’s no rush to demand that plastic surgeons operate out of ambulatory surgical center-type facilities, have privileges, or any of the other requirements that are specifically designed to shutter facilities and reduce the number of abortion clinics statewide.

So, any chance that this get struck down by the courts, like the one in Wisconsin did?

For those of you in Texas who want a less neanderthal place to live, New York State is pretty excellent. The winters are cold (especially upstate), but few tornadoes and hurricanes (Sandy notwithstanding) and much more pleasant summers.

Also, it’s probably about as cheap to live upstate as it is in Texas. And the kids won’t be taught creationism in biology class in suburban Buffalo or Rochester.

You would think that having to call in additional armed guards during the signing of a law would kind of, you know, tip folks off that it’s not a good idea to sign that law.

They don’t care. They’re fanatics. To them, it IS a good law and anyone who protests against it is evil.

Abortion rights advocates invoke Alamo on T-shirt

“A foregone conclusion has never stopped a group of citizens committed to ideals of democracy and liberty from taking a stand and fighting with everything they’ve got,” reads an orange T-shirt that Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin, tweeted a photo of on Sunday. “This is Texas, baby. Remember the Alamo.”

re: #12 Ian G.

It’s possible that a federal court would issue an injunction against TX from implementing the law just as in WI, but if it doesn’t, and the case winds its way through appeals, it’s possible that the Supreme Court will take up the case (because of split between circuits).

That’s the ultimate aim of these types of law - a rollback of Planned Parenthood v. Casey and Roe v. Wade.

20 abolitionist  Wed, Jul 10, 2013 10:05:30am

The two officers arrived about 120 sec after the speaker was recognised, which was somewhat consistent with protocol, and she exceeded her time by several seconds.

And I agree with everything she said.

But won’t the damage have been done at that point? I’m guessing once these clinics shut down, they don’t come back.

I watched the live feed - they let one religious fanatic after another go over their allotted times with no protest and certainly no dragging off by state cops. This was obviously a reaction to what she was saying, not about going over her time.

GOP fiscal discipline is a complete fiction.

It’s a side effect of being the authoritarian, not the conservative party…it’s hard-coded that principles bend for the leadership cadre.

As a vet of the abortion wars back in the old days, I am absolutely stunned, enraged, and grief-stricken that women are being subjected to this bullshit again by those who put their religion and “moral” outlook before a woman’s right to privacy.

Goddamn it, take their asses to court—this is unconstitutional and they know it.

The next thing you know, if we don’t act, they’ll take away birth control and put us in burkas, and as long as I breathe, that’s not going to happen and thinking women won’t sign away their rights so easily. These bastards and their handmaidens are sneaky and insidious and we cannot take our eyes off them. They are using creeping laws to prohibit abortions in certain stages of pregnancy to make them unavailable, until the day they achieve the outright banning of abortions on their terms.

What part of this don’t they understand? law.justia.com

Opinion - US: The GOP’s pro-life hypocrisy
If pro-life Republicans want to save lives, they could start with women and children in the reddest states.

Last Modified: 09 Jul 2013 12:44
Jill Filipovic

Excerpt:

Governor Rick Perry and Texas Republicans aren’t giving up the fight, though, and are vowing to double down on their efforts to make family planning more difficult for Texas women. Perry, for his part, boasted that he enjoys causing pain to the mostly female reproductive rights advocates: “The louder they scream, the more we know we are getting something done,” he said.

Misleading teenagers

Texas, by the way, has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country. More than one out of every 10 American teenagers who gives birth is a Texan. Sexual health education in Texas focuses on abstinence, and isn’t required to be medically accurate. Students in Texas schools learn that contraceptives are ineffective and the best birth control is waiting until marriage. Since that advice has never worked anywhere in the history of the world, it will come as no surprise that Texas teens are less likely to use condoms and birth control pills than teens in the rest of the country, but they’re more likely to be sexually active and they have more sexual partners.

It’s not just teenagers who are being misled in ways that complicate their health and their rights. Texas also ranks in the top ten for domestic violence murders. Texas Governor Rick Perry, who is leading the push for abortion restrictions, has slashed maternal health services in his state. As a result of those and other right-wing policies, maternal mortality rates in Texas have quadrupled over the past 15 years.

This opinion piece covers much more than Texas, and is rich in links.
